I was diagnosed with ADHD combined type at 33. This video made me tear up because I identify a lot with Brianne. I managed to get a 3.2 GPA in high school, but barely graduated from college while self medicating with heavy marijuana use. By age 13, I really just thought I was a bad/defective person. The feeling of an hour class feeling like 8 hours.. I just thought everyone felt like that. Everyone else seemed so much more disciplined and no matter how hard I tried...I just couldn't be like the "normal" kids. I had my son at 24, and 4 years, I lost my marriage, job, home, and any self esteem I may have still had. My self worth was wrecked. At 33, I was severely depressed and had generalized anxiety.
Now...at almost 35 and after finding the right diagnosis, along with finding the right dose and type of medication, I'm literally rebuilding my life. Thank you for this video!

I have to say after reading several of Dr. Amen's books and watching a ton of his Podcasts and RUclips videos, I truly believe that he wants to help people live their best life. I'm so happy that Daniel Amen decided to become a psychiatrist and bring awareness to brain spect imaging. It's so TRUE, how can you know unless look?? In my opinion, brain imaging should be a common test that is done to evaluate overall health- especially if someone is having problems emotionally, or with headaches, possible concussions, learning problems, substance abuse, etc... It should be common sense!

    • @topxsoul
      @topxsoul 4 года назад +1

DLJG1 it seems like it would be but in practice the way that Dr Amen does this is at the minimum not as precise as he makes it out to be. We can use brain scans to see certain patterns of behavior in the brain and confirm certain characteristics of disorders but at the individual level it is not all that helpful beyond helping to identify a disorder in a fairly general sense.
We’re simply not good enough at this yet and I say this as a psychologist and someone who can actually read the data.
We don’t know enough about the brain yet to be able to use brain scans which in one way or another measure the firing of electrical signals in brain, or simply activation.
So basically by mapping ON/OFF Billions of times throughout the entire brain we are to make conclusions as to the details of what’s happening.
Imagine I break you iPhone and I have to tell you everything that is happening on it based on the display, audio, with the memory, etc. just by the electrical signals that it is sending out.
Now make that 1000x more difficult .
That’s what we’re doing and FYI Functional MRIs are now more advanced than the methods Dr Amen uses.

I envision greatness in my career and I am always trying to motivate amd push myself to be organized and on top of everything, but sometimes I have a task and I just can't even get myself started, I procrastinate and I get myself worked into a frenzy for no apparent reason and I end up falling behind on things. Dr. Amen, thank you for sharing your knowledge and sharing your very personal family stories. I'm a 52 year old female and have struggled for many many years with depression and some anxiety. I've went to a few psychologists and a psychiatrist over the years until they drained me. This last Dr tried me on a few medications and only one helped for a short time but I feel like the exercise I was doing was the key. When I quit things went down hill again. Now I truly believe that my diet plays a big roll so I've been changing that but it's very difficult fighting a sugar addiction. I've had suicide attempts I hate that I'm not consistent with anything in my life and I hate that I can't compete tasks or follow thru with plans. I hate that I leave messes everywhere just to have to clean up later. I was a terrible mom and now I'm just a terrible enabler to two adult kids with addictions. I fear I'll be there same to my beautiful grandchildren. I love till it hurts. I'm doing no one any good. Can you please recommend a doctor similar to your ways for me, please? Your story about your daughter made me cry because that was me, I felt and experienced exactly what she did. Thanks for listening. God bless. Cheryl

No gp will help me with medication anymore.they all tell me I need to see a head doctor. I live in northern bc canada.there is only one doctor that could see me but apparently ADD people are low on the people that need to be helped.. since my diagnosis I have tried to learn as much as possible about the condition and see how this has deviated my attempts at bettering my self.
I can’t even believe that all the knowledge and tools are out there to fix me but no one will help me.

Can you please do a short video on ADD and the link to alcoholism? ( I know you have mentioned in longer videos about drug abuse, etc.... ...how alcoholics self medicate to feel normal because it acts as a stimulant and Adderall, for example also acts as a stimulant to help ADDers feel normal. A video as short as possible because I think those truly suffering will not pay attention long. May many family members see this (future?) video and see their Alcoholic family members get help. My daughter wanted out of the stroller in target, she was running around and being wild, got her back in, then she’s out, she wants to push it, and somehow flipped it back and fell on her back bumping her head. Oh the looks from the perfect parents…she was 2 or 3. She’s 18 now, I was dx with ADHD a few years ago, and I’m certain she has it too. They want to diagnose her with everything else and ignore how ADHD looks in young women and the snowball of other issues that stem from it.

God bless you Dr. Amen! My granddaughter was recently diagnosed with ADHD. My daughter has been taking her for Math tutoring. She has had her in dance, swimming lessons, piano lessons, etc.
Her Dad is strongly opposed to her taking medication. I was a teacher and I always felt medication should be a last resort, however, some people truly need it in order to thrive. My granddaughter is in fifth grade and they did recently choose to put her on medication, which they have been told, only needs to be taken on school days. My understanding was that this medication needs to be administered daily. I hope meds have been improved and that this is no longer the case. Sorry, I don’t remember what kind of Med it is. Do you advise parents to only administer meds when needed, or do they need to take it daily? Thanks, in advance, for any input regarding this information. May God bless you and your family. Thanks so much for your dedication and honesty. You are a gift to those affected by this disorder!

One of the most frustrating things for me to hear, is how great things are when someone gets treatment and everything changes. I've tried so many meds, seen so many therapists, and.....NOTHING. Not a damn thing. I know as much as the therapists. Everything I tell them about my situation, and the causes, and what it means, they all nod in agreement. But no one can help beyond giving tips for COPING with it, or working around it. None of which work, by the way. I'm utterly paralyzed on a daily basis and have no idea how to help myself. It brings me to tears.

Dr. Amen is suggesting that with a brain scan, instead of guessing what the problem (and treatment )is, the precise problem is more easily determined, and thus the proper treatment can be determined.

This is almost like an ad for Ritalin. He says it dramatically improved his daughters life. Great, if so.
I took Ridlin and it didn’t help me at all. In fact, it made me feel very disoriented and I quickly ditched it.

He could have had the same results without those scans. At the end of the day, what did they really do? 17:26 she FELT the improvement, and simple tests show the effects of Ritalin

Robert Kemp Frauds are the biggest winners in this world I guess. Look at Donald Trump for instance? (Or how about how Thomas Edison copied the works of Nikola Tesler, whilst acting as if it was himself who made those inventions being as he was simply the better marketer? Whereas the father of electricity died alone in his apartment.) People are willing to do anything to either shape the world into their personal image or take money from those who are less fortunate than others. I wouldn't trust these people as far as I could throw them if being cynical is understanding that we don't own other people or this planet in particular for that matter (That can inevitably extinct our insignificant species at any given moment if it, so choose.) then yeah, I guess that makes me just cynical... There's a lot of secrets in this world and not many tell the truth about it.
Such is the nature of humanity itself.

Robert Kemp Is that why we constantly change our, so called: "World Leaders?" Why democracy is now being seen more and more as a form of dictatorship where people have begun to lose trust in their own government? We only know what other's try to tell us what we should believe in. It's been like that since the dawn of time. Religion (Not all, but the most common.) being the first thing other's used to either escape reality or manipulate other's into hating each-other. (These things still happening even to this very day depending on where you live on this planet.)

lol. Well, if he is helping people why shouldn't he make money while caring for people?? So many people and companies in this world are totally out for their own gains not giving a shit about how what they are doing impacts other people!
