Thank you so much for making a channel focusing on the Southern Dialect! I really, really appreciate it. All of my Vietnamese friends here in the States are from the South and I want to communicate with them well, but most of the learning channels/sites online focus on the Northern Dialect. Many thanks! ^.^
It’s still the same language. You can learn the northern dialect and still communicate with anyone. Also many people in the US are from the south but have northern heritage.
It's never too late to reconnect with your roots. I grew up in the U.S. and recently have started to learn and use Vietnamese more often. I live in New Mexico so there are hardly any Vietnamese around but I talk to myself, watching Vietnamese shows, watch Vietnamese youtube videos and stuff to keep to learn and develop my Vietnamese and more importantly, to not lose my roots.
@@ThinhTran-wy6vc I learn Vietnamese because here in Kansas, we have a lot of Vietnamese native speakers and my family always speaks Vietnamese to each other. Also some of my family members don’t know English.
It's so weird for me to watch this lol, I'm half vietnamese and I speak it fluently with my mother and my other relatives. My problem is, that there are many words that my mother only says in my other language (we don't live in Vietnam), so I don't know these words in vietnamese. And when relatives say them, I have no idea what they mean. Sounds strange but I had for example no idea what goodbye means in vietnamese xD So thank you for making this video! I don't understand anything in northern vietnamese but it seems like there are much mor videos that teach u northern than southern vietnamese. So rlly, thank you!
You are such a great teacher, the lesson is very clear with clear pronunciation and accent, very easy to follow. Thank you, hope to see you again in lesson 2
I just stumbled upon your videos. I have to say, they are very good quality and easy to follow. I started trying to learn Vietnamese through Duolingo, but fell off because I wasn't getting any explanation nearly as in-depth as you provide. This has inspired me to start again. As a police officer who has a large Vietnamese population in my district, this will prove to be very helpful in providing service. Thank you!
Thank you for the video in Southern Vietnamese. I am nguoi Hoa, Chinese who was born in Cholon, Vietnam and haven't learned Vietnamese due to leaving Vietnam at an early age. I went back to Vietnam a few times, but my wife despite being nguoi Hoa spoke mostly Vietnamese at home in Vietnam before we married. I have learned some Tieng Viet here in the USA by borrowing learning materials in Vietnamese at the library and online, but what's taught are usually the northern accent. Thanks again.

hello. I am half Vietnamese, and I am in Vietnam right now trying to learn the language better! I have watched many of your videos! but do you think you could make one of some things Vietnamese people say when they're mad or things things they would say that is humorous
Chào Anh, in fact, many Vietnamese people pronounce many French words with nặng tone, they pronounce the word “parc” as “pạc” instead of “pác”, the word “merci” as “mẹc-xi” instead of “méc-xi”, I don’t know why.
This definitely helped me improve my viet more, I grew up in the US so I gradually lost a lot of my viet speaking (I understand it when someone's talking but speaking is horrible)
This is a good lesson because I want to learn the Southern accent, however, it would have been useful to also include pronunciation tips for the words as well.
Thank you for your comment, skweems. Google Translate mainly uses the Northern dialect of Vietnamese, which may lead to differences in pronunciation compared to the Southern dialect. Therefore, it's important to keep in mind that the translations provided by Google Translate may not always be accurate and to continue learning Vietnamese with a focus on the dialect you wish to speak.

Haha, no offense taken! In some cultures, it's considered rude to use your left hand for certain actions, but that's not the case for shaking hands in Vietnamese culture. Thanks for watching our video on Southern Vietnamese accents!
Phi, when you say "Mình phải đi rồi"... the 'R' in rồi sounds to me like a 'J' in English. I thought in the south R sounds the same as an 'R' in English, while in the north sounds like a Z. Could you please explain why the J pronunciation?
It kinda sounds like a J because the tongue just curves up and doesn't move when the air goes out like the R in Spanish, but as you can see his lower and upper teeth are not close up to each other so if you listen carefully you'll see the difference between this R and J. This R is the lazier R :)) compared to the Spanish one, usually used on TV, in speech, formal situations, etc. In South-East Vietnam (mainly Saigon) many people use this R, it's correct and easier than Spanish R, but in South-West (Mekong Delta) people then to speak R like a G in Good.

There is a subtle difference in meaning. Tên bạn is a shortening of tên của bạn (your name) so tên bạn là gì is more of "what is your name?" while bạn tên (là) gì? means "what are you named?" The pronoun mình means "self" but is often used to mean "I/me" or "we" in Southern Vietnamese.
