Can't wait for someone to do a teardown of the internals. I'm pretty sure that someone will make an attempt at modding as well (better speakers, lights?)

That would be me. I’m attempting to retrofit DIY lightsaber parts for it. Neopixel and proffie to be exact. You’ll lose the Bluetooth feature, but gain so so much.. neopixel will make it look real. I’m going to try to finish this project this year.

@@lacweal1 I have all the replacement electronics on hand RN. Saving for a disc/backpack combo which 2nd hand is about $180. A heavy upcharge, but much cheaper than traveling 1200 miles and emptying my wallet for the mouse. At $100 it’s actually cheaper to buy the new disc than it is to 3D print one. There’s one special function that my disc will do that no one else’s does, but it’s a secret until it’s finished. Oh and I might be able to save Bluetooth speaker functionality, but it’s not a priority to me. My priority is getting the lighting perfect, and all of my projects now use neopixel exclusively. No jank one color LED. Full RGB-CW support and a 16bit encoder. I’m about to make a laughing stock of Disney. I’m very excited to get this done. What should I do with the original electronics? They’re basically garbage to me, but could they be useful to someone else?

So you're telling me we went from a stylistically elegant, more movie accurate model, that also actually worked as a proper Frisbee?! With hardware buttons that allowed you to mod and control the sounds (that you can import yourself?) with more accuracy?
13 years later and you get a paperweight that lights up horribly and spits out sound randomly without correlation to specific movement, similar to an infant's shaker. A toddler's toy, with the bonus micropayment feature. Now the Christmas gift you bought your niece is another reason to lure your family back into a day of feverish targeted marketing purgatory, for quite possibly no more than 1mb of shitty audio data on a cheap plastic chip.
Thanks for the review, I will be getting the 2010 spinmaster as my next Frisbee purchase. Sleek, functional, and moddable. What a wonderfully elegant product, made during a better time.

      Bro. It ain't that deep.
I have the Spinmaster one and was kinda disappointed, even as a kid. Also, hardware buttons? Did you watch the video? It has the exact same button placement. Also, it did not work as a frisbee. There was a glow-in-the-dark frisbee (non-electronic) variant that was one half the shell, because as it is, the electronic one does NOT work as a frisbee because frisbees have to be a certain shape to fly correctly, and an identity disk, is not that shape. They even had instructions on the box not to throw them.
Also, how is it more elegent or stylistic? They're the same shape, my guy... One is just scaled up. Sure the spin master has sharper sculpting, but really??? That's a weak argument. Same with argument about the lights, because the lights on the spinmaster one are absolute dog shite. At least there's more than two now. Speaking of that; also, "moddable????" Anything is moddable dude. These things aren't designed to be modded. The spinmaster one was not DESIGNED to be modded, you just can. Same as you could with one of these. Literally the same way.
Accuracy, sure, maybe because of the sculpting being slightly sharper, But at a glance, and especially since we never have a real sense of scale of one of these, and TRON Evolution demonstrates some disks are bigger than others, at least scaling is debatable. Accuracy is a ballpark at best because we don't have super detailed prop photos, and no true replicas have ever been produced. I personally think the spinmaster ones are too small in fact because they were made for children's hands. (Edit: I upon research, I definitely think the newer one is more accurately scaled tbh, as to what's seen in Legacy. looking at several reference photos. In promo shots, Garrett Hedlund's fingers can't close all the way around the disk, and in this video states that to be true of the newer one. It's about the same height of his head as well, which the spinmaster one is definitely not.)
Also the spinmaster one is flimsy as hell, mind you, and the new one (which I literally bought today) feels way more robust and more durable.
All in all, you're high, dude. I would gladly trade my Spinmaster one I got when I was 12 for this one, if I didn't have sentimental attachment to it. My 12 year old self definitely would have.
Do I agree it should still be better, probably. We have the tech now to make this insanely close to a real replica with prefect lighting and everything, but that would probably boast a price point higher than this one to be totally honest. Not that I wouldn't pay more for a true replica, but I'm just saying.
The spinmaster one is not a superior product to be honest. Definitely not out of the box, especially.
It's only utility now is if you want a smaller version as a cosplay prop to gut out, and at that point, you are literally paying for two black pieces of plastic since you're gutting the internals. Just get a 3D printed one of of Etsy if that's your goal. Leave the spinmasters for the toy collectors. But even if you're bent on modding one that wasn't meant to be modded, you could still mod the hell out of this one if you wanted it to really look the part, and would be a hell of a lot more durable.
Get bent dude, and just admit you hate Disney just to hate Disney.

wow, it looks like I've entered into a dungeon of manchildren that can't admit when their favourite corporation abuses their willingness to support your fandom/hobby. Should've known, considering you have to be one to be obsessed with Disney this much as a grown man.
No worries, I know when I'm out of my place and this space is definitely not it.
Have fun with overpaying for your shitty paperweights while i have fun overpaying for shitty tech 🎉

There is a team color chip for green and pink. It’s that the way to obtain that is creating your own program figure, and selecting that said color

If you tap and hold the button it makes a buildup sound. I didn’t have much luck with the Bluetooth speaker using Apple Music, not sure what’s going on but even had it exchanged and it’s still very low. The regular discs sounds however are plenty loud.

I guess the Bluetooth is cool because you could play the tron soundtrack on it, but I'm not gonna choose this new disc over my small compact Bluetooth speaker for cleaning/showers... also sucks that you have to buy the chips seperately!! What happened to accessories included 😂. Great review, thanks for it!

Subscribed! Great video, ESPECIALLY the comparison between the newer one and the 2010 version.
I want to get this, but I don't know if or when I'll ever go back to Disney World, so it looks like Ebay's my best bet. The Spinmaster ones are CRAZY expensive on there now, so I'd rather pay $70-100 for these plus I like that you can swap out the identity cards.

If you don’t move it it won’t make any sound but the light will turn off after a couple minutes. Otherwise you could connect it in Bluetooth mode and just don’t play anything and I think it will stay on.

I can’t believe you paid the eBay price for this piece of crap. Somebody already has done a break down of the internals as its from the old spin master, and you can look up videos that talk about mods already for the disks which makes them way better and would be comparable to the 2023 as they’re pretty much the exact same toy, Disney just re-purposed it. Oh, don’t forget the old one had different discs for the different characters so that’s why you weren’t getting the different colours or the different sounds because you had to buy the separate toys (old version)
