Intercooler Upgrade and Turbo Upgrade - [ Can You Run An Intercooler Without A Turbo ]

  • An intercooler upgrade and turbo upgrade can make a huge difference to the performance of a turbo diesel engine.
    Matt explains how you can run an intercooler without a turbo upgrade, particularly if you are towing a caravan.
    Just the intercooler upgrade will help with dispersing heat, and giving you more of a constant power range while in the hills, without loosing power when you need it the most.
    A turbo upgrade will provide extra power into your engine, but it will also increase your Exhaust Gas Temperature ( EGT ) so there for that increased heat needs to be managed. Thats where a larger intercooler will help with managing the extra EGT heat.
    Turbo diesel engines love cold air running through them, so the larger intercooler will help you to keep cold air running through your turbo, and keeping the power going when you need it.
    The ZD30 engine in my Nissan Patrol has both a intercooler upgrade and turbo upgrade, and the difference it makes is amazing.

    Matt, your explanation of moving heat makes a lot of sense and the application of this idea to turbo upgrades and just inter-cooler upgrades. What about spraying water on the factory inter-cooler under those load conditions - going up a long hill pulling a camper/caravan?

      Hi Benny, anything you can do to control heat will be helpful and water sprays do work. The problem with the standard ZD30 intercooler is that even on a flat bit of road they get hot, most other front mounted intercoolers like fitted to Ranger, Colorado, Dmax, Prado, etc will deal with normal loads until the going gets tough.

    • @mattjackson4541
      @mattjackson4541 3 года назад

      @@tonymcintyre7701 yes its a great addition and its important to make sure you have good air flow over the intercooler to assist in taking the heat away. If its under the bonnet make sure the intercooler is sealed to a good sized bonnet mounted vent. An extraction fan mounted under the intercooler is also a great idea.

    • @mattjackson4541
      @mattjackson4541 3 года назад

      An intercooler will not directly change coolant temp BUT, if the engine can do the same job more easily (with cool dense air) than you will find you will need less throttle, less RPM and arguably less engine heat will be generated.

      Hi Glenn, no an intercooler is not required on a petrol engine BUT, cool intake air is still just as important. A late model EFI engine still monitors intake air temp (IAT) and the ECU will alter the tune and power as the temp rises. If you are looking to get the best performance out of your petrol or diesel engine, unrestricted, cold, dense air is required.
