Camera Car Damage report - is the 3L GU Patrol really a grenade? What went wrong & how we fixed it

  • Time our 4WD 24/7 Camera Car received a little TLC! 🙌
    We built up this 2013 model GU Patrol about 18 months ago on the channel but we’ve had a few issues with it after some hectic big trips!
    The dramas include mostly factory Nissan things like:
    👉 Leaking airbox
    👉 A small turbo that’s prone to leaking oil into the intercooler
    👉 High EGT’s & sudden power loss
    PLUS after our Simpson Desert trip last year, the turbo decided to delete itself so there are a few things this car needs to get it back up & running on the road! 🛠️
    Getting this rig ready for the track again couldn't have been possible without our mates:

    Good stuff on the old girl, many probably don't realise she has to do almost everything all the other rigs do. I've gotta ask though. Why was the tune done before the air filter & snorkel? Surely the tune would have been better after everything was fitted? Preventative maintenance is something that should be highlighted more often (even if it doesn't normally mean good content) we know how important it is! 👍

  • @hanselgretel8563
    @hanselgretel8563 2 месяца назад +9

    I would agree on Turbo Yoda's opinion on the ZD30. It's not a bad engine. It is quite under powered for the weight of the vehicle. It is working really hard most of its life. The TD42 would have that extra capacity for what you are using the vehicle for. Still no replacement for displacement.

    • @einfelder8262
      @einfelder8262 2 месяца назад +4

      Rubbish. An underpowered engine does not "work hard". The TD42 is a part of history, and as for power and torque the TD42 makes far less than a ZD30, meaning in your terms it works even harder.

    • @skegbudley4611
      @skegbudley4611 2 месяца назад

      We have increased the ZD's performance and reliability so that it easily outperforms the td42 for relatively little money. Displacement is great when utilised in a efficient motor. The TD42 is anything but that.

    since my time in the military we used nylon stocking over the air filter, before putting the stocking over the filter, it got a light coat of silicone spray to trap and catch water, or the finest dust , used the method in the deserts and in the wetlands around the world and never had a problem in anyway! as far as you pulling the injectors , the dirt is the filtering unit for the diesel fuel filter, Raycore filter system is the best on the market, those injectors are bad , but it could have been cleaner then that? we run raycore filters in the tank and never had problems like that! offroading is fun , but not protecting the engine is PRETTY STUPID!

      I'm with you part way.
      I've owned a TD42, bloody kettle as they're well known for.
      No way of stopping it cooking, sold it easily to a devoted TD42 lover.
      Then into a 76 cruiser.
      They are the most hyped up piece of shit, learnt to despise the bloody thing. Again, sold it easily to a devoted Toyota fan boy.
      I was never even going to look at another Patrol after the TD42, bearing in mind I had previously test driving a ZD30 DI, felt underpowered immediately.
      I was eventually talked into taking a ZD30 CRC for test drive.
      This is without a doubt the best if all 4 vehicles listed here.
      Yes it had EGT issues, run hot as they all do, but at least it didn't get hot hot like a TD42.
      I resolved that at 88K, had a improved fully welded top mount intercooler installed, boost control & ECU tune done.
      It just pulls all day now, EGTs are lower, and it's so refined compared to the TD42.
      As for the 76, this thing now's pulls better than our chipped 76 ever did, flexes and tackles off road challenges with ease, nothing fases it, the 76 just made everything so complicated, had zero flex, hence wheel lifting requiring diff locks constantly engaged for basic maneuvers.
      Today I ran my rear diff lock for about 3-kms of crawling just to lube it with use, never ever requires it, brilliant car, good motor.
      You just need to look after them. That air box told the whole story, bugger all intelligence maintenance occuring on that vehicle.
      These guys fascinate me, they rant on about looking after trucks, doing daily inspections etc on trips, that obviously doesn't occur in real life behind the scenes.
      I totally love our ZD30 CRC, it just gets the job done in total comfort, nothing fases it.

      @@Rexy888 fraser Is. 2012, mates 2.8 turbo 6 pot blew the plastic top tank totally off his radiator, as he just kept driving it hard ignoring the temp gauge, boom.
      It's just a Nissan thing, it's as if they designed them to run too hot, haha.
      4.2 was a pain in the arse, as when it got hot Nissan had built in protection, they just switched the air-conditioning off, reducing heat in condenser, hence cooler air hitting radiator core, that crap just pushed me into selling it.
      Not ever a fan of 4.2 at all, so gutless stuff all torque, had to drive it like you stole it to get anywhere.
      ZD30 CRC torque was so much better, now after tune, the torque delivery is brilliant, as I said, better than our chipped 76 was.

    Where are these EGT's being measured from if you are so much selling the front mount intercooler ? Surely you'd be improving Intake air temperature? Assuming that massive thing doesn't clog with mud and block the radiator and she explodes anyway.
