I think the best 4x4 is the one that is within your budget no matter what badge is on the front, the kind that fits your requirements to get you out there for adventure after all its the journey and adventure that matters the most.
My d22 navara 3L zd30 was a great bargain buy. Picked it up for $4000 at 350,000kms in 2020 and now at 440,000kms and still going strong with no issues in my ownership just usual maintenance and check’s before every trip. Never seen a d22 fully kitted out like more popular models of 4x4 and personally can’t see why not it’s a great base for a build.
same dude i have 02 D22 3L zd30 off me old man who could no longer drive it sadly, i got it at 102,000km :) the kids love going out on random adventures
have to agree mate, theyre a great beginner 4wd and definitely capable with a few small mods. sad to say I don't think I've ever heard these guys mention it
I bought a 2002 d22 navara on 200k for 5k, it had a dodgy clutch when I bought it hence why it was so cheap, fixed it up within a week and has been all over South Australia never missing a beat
The best bang for buck rig is hands down the D22 YD25 Navara. I own one from 2011 and bought it for $19k with 60000kms I have now almost doubled it. It has NEVER left me stranded in the bush and has always left me smiling from ear to ear. They are so capable off-road and are also reliable. They have a 4 cylinder turbo diesel which also make them fuel efficient. I have a fully loaded canopy, mud tyres and a lead foot and I still manage to get over 550kms on a single 75L tank. Mods are also affordable and readily available which is another reason this forbie is such a good buy. You can pick one of these rigs up with more kms for a 10-15k and they will still outperform lots of those patrols and land cruisers everyone is spending their life saving on. Just can't beat the mighty D22 Nav
The RA Holden Rodeo honestly can’t be beat for the money. I picked mine up as my first car for $8K, absolutely immaculate for a 4x4 that cheap. With a bulletproof Isuzu 6ve1 3.5 petrol making 200hp, and also available in the 4jh1, i cant think of anything better! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for an amazing 4x4 whilst not breaking the bank! Much love boys 👋
absolute crap I don’t know anyone who has own the Pajero of this body type that has not had to rebuild the engine due to blowing head gaskets etc if you like wasting your money and they absolutely crap on the beach. I’m warning to those you don’t want to spend your money on crap. Don’t buy one of these. I know Mitsubishi might have fix their game up now but anyone who owned a magna, or Pajero it was nothing, but a hole in the pocket 💰💰
@@davidharper7636 dude what? The 4M41 diesel is amongst the best common rail diesel to date. Strong robust engine. You’re talking kak my friend Edit: The 4M41 from about 2009+ is the best. The diesel engine in the Gen 3s were known to have funky fuel pumps etc.
@David Harper your talking rubbish. The 6g engine is a great engine when looked after properly and that's the key. Neglect the cooling system and you will kill a head 100% but pajero is strong and reliable and a weapon on the sand in the right hands.
@@davidharper7636 Absolute rubbish. BEAR in mind - when you own a Magna or Pajero - these have without a doubt lower resale than any brand. When you're selling cheap cars you attract cheap owners. What do cheap owners do? be cheap. Cheap/lack of maintenance and cheap non genuine parts. you'll always get more things going wrong. They are absolute rigs. Even the NP Pajero - Hell get the pump fixed and you have a RIPPER car that'll outlast humanity
I’ve got the best bang for buck rig otherwise known as the 90 series Prado. The mighty 90 is as tough as nails, but also as comfortable as a plush sofa. It's like having a bodyguard who's also a masseuse! take it off roading and it'll handle everything from mud to sand to rocks, but you can also take it to the grocery store and it'll hold all your shopping without breaking a sweat. It's like the Swiss Army Knife of cars!
I just brought a 2010 NT Pajero with 280k km, perfect service history. It’s the Activ option so it’s full leather, tjm snorkel, alloy winch bar, bash plates, 170l long range tanks, rhino roof platform and a 2 inch koni lift. $21,000. Vic high country was fun and Fraser in October will be even better. Cheers boys👍
100% agree. Even with there limited amount of flex (if standard) they'll still crawl just about anything due to there traction control system and diff lock, not to mention the super select 4wd system. Pick of the bunch defintely a Gen 4 with factory lockers.
I bought my HDJ100 Landcruiser for 11k in 2019 Have since done 100,000km+ now reaching the 500,000km mark but continues to be daily driven and using 9l/100 of diesel. Fair to say it's been the best bang for buck 4wd. Cheers
Discovery 2 2003-2004 under 10k With proper maintenance is a very reliable car. Very capable off road and comfortable on road. 5 seaters had coils all round and 7 seaters has air in the rear. Both solid axel with centre diff lock. td5 are very economical but gee the v8 sounds good! Spare parts and upgrades still readily available. Bought my 2003 discovery v8 in 2013 for 9k with 155000km and have used it for work every day since. Up to 364000km still going strong. Just my opinion but I’m sure others will agree
Definitely agree, my 01 Td5 had 300 000km on it. Had not had a single issue. Remapped, suspension lift and 33s on it and it goes anywhere. Absolute monsters.
May be different market but uk the cdl lever was an interesting subject, 02 and 03 often didn't have the gubbins but 01 did with no lever, easy enough to pop a hole in the floor and put a socket on it, pretty much go anywhere with the traction control, just top up fluids occasionally as if it doesn't leak its empty, luckily you guys don't have major rot of the chassis like we do, however for a couple ks galvanised chassis exist, plenty of remaps about for the td5 also.
2nd gen 4Runner/hilux surf they have hilux reliability and came in manual or auto and 2.7 and 3 litre petrol or 2.8 and 2.4 diesel aswell as turbo diesel options. The sr5s even had electric windows. They had coils in the rear and ifs front, nice and comfy and capable and can pick up a very clean one for around 15k but there’s many way cheaper. Gotta be one of the most underrated rigs out
I can't believe neither of you mentioned a dual cab vdj79 series, i think they would fit in the 10k price bracket, have plenty of technology for their era, very fuel efficient, lots of clearance, lots of flex and tons of power, very under rated vehicle
The best bang for buck rig is hands down an ML Triton GLXR. Picked mine up for 11.5k with 180km on the clock with a lift and bar work. The 3.2L 4M41T motor is absolutely bullet proof and makes good reliable power and the super select transfer makes easy work of sand, dirt, gravel and even wet slippery roads and if you cant get through it in super select you can drop it down to 4high or 4low. Plus the cash you save from buying one can go towards more mods, more adventures and plenty of beer.
ML's show up for under 10k occasionally, normally more like the 13k range. At that they're great value, and I seriously looked at them. But as the "30k" choice for a Triton? Not unless it's an MR or late model MQ with all the fruit.
I recently bought a 2013 3.0L Turbo Diesel Hilux with 175,000kms for $26000, has a 12v system with 2 batteries, full bar work, spotlights, 2” suspension lift, new tyres and a fridge. A very good buy.
In my opinion a d22 navara is the best bang for your buck rig. I only paid 11k for mine and spend about 1k on mods and it is a weapon that will take me anywhere .
Imported a 1993 KZJ78 Landcruiser Prado from Japan to U.S. for $18k last summer. Mint condition inside and out. 190km on the 1KZ-TE. My 1st 4x4, in love with it! Been out in the snow, sand, rocky terrain and recently a 3k mile roadtrip with zero issues.
I think the prado 120 is being significantly underestimates. I have one with a 1kz, with a few little mods, it is an absolute weapon, and a proper off reader that will compete with some of the best.
Nissan navara d40. My dad has had one for 8 years, NEVER LET US DOWN. One time the alternator died, still got us to Bendigo, (we were half way thru the trip) we made it to our mates house then got to the repair shop. Died at the repair shop. Rebuilt the alternator, just fine. Done every track in Anglesey a million times been to Bendigo a million times. Never failed us and never left us stranded, its the 18 year olds sitting on the limiter on the tracks giving it the bad rep.
Took delivery of my Mitzi Challenger today. 2015, 150k on the clock, $20k. Triton reliability underpinnings with spare parts everywhere. Comfy coils all round. Super select 4wd system + factory rear diff lock. Will take me everywhere! Most likely I’ll be ready to quit the track well before the Challenger is far from done.
i picked up a 97 tj wrangler for 5500 and highly modified. 35s slip yoke eliminator 4 inch lift e locker rear mechanical locker front 4.56 diffs. braced front diff siff breathers. such a great car off road and being a early jeep parts are every where and cheap great to learn about looking after a 4wd and 4ltr has good power for what it is :)
under 10k. i just bought my first 4x4, been looking for almost a year now. Got super lucky and found a 90 series prado with the v6 for $8000. Reason i chose it is because that model of prado is kind of an underdog in the off-road scene, so a lot of them were only used for family SUV duty. the one i found was a 2000 model that was probably the most looked after vehicle i have ever seen. no scratches, no rattles. the paint looks brand new, the interior was detailed regularly.. and the most insane part is i found several of them in this condition. most stock as a rock too so you can take them any direction you want. i just don't think you can beat the deals on them. mine even came with brand new all terrains to get me started on the tracks. -Insanely reliable petrol engine, often the interior and body are in near new condition. nearly always under 10k -comes from the factory with 2 fuel tanks. -very strong driveline. -decent clearance from factory -very good wheelbase and overall size for both a touring rig and a daily driver around town. - good parts availability due to sharing so many parts with other Toyota models like the hilux. what more can you ask for in an entry 4x4? you basically don't even have to mod them. i'm super excited to get out there and hit the trails for the first time.
Recently bought a 2014 Mitsubishi PC challenger for 20k. Odo had 155,000kms on the clock and was immaculate interior and exterior. It was the best value wagon that was available at the time considering it has Mitsubishi's Super select 4wd system, a rear diff lock, reverse camera and other electronic accessories as well as 220mm of ground clearance stock! Owned it for a couple of months now and absolutely love it. Taken it on a couple of trips up the Victorian High Country and handled some of the more gnarly tracks like a dream!
I bought a 2012 one a couple years ago, 160 000 kms for 14k. Did 60 000 kms in it and never had an issue, didn’t spend a cent. Until unfortunately it’s developed a head gasket issue which was apparently pretty common for the pre 2014 models
Jock was right - my MN Triton that I bought for $20k around 9 years ago is outstanding. Great engine (if kept clean), so reliable, has recovered two Navara’s, a Triton and a Hilux, (all towing vans and trailers), heaps of mods available, cheap to fix, and my daughter wants it for her first car. Bloody unreal fun!
Went on some 4x4 trips in Thailand, they all had Tritons, they flog them so hard it's crazy and they were years old. I say as a Toyota owner, Japan makes good stuff, Mitsubishi and Nissan are from the same country.
My auto 105 1hz I picked up years ago just before pandemic, is the gift that keeps on giving. Got me out when I could in lockdown, and simple enough car in most areas that I’m able to learn the basic skills with the car and save some cash. (Bearings, injectors, 12v etc…)
My 2005 Holden rodeo. Got the 4jh1t (Isuzu engine) had just over 200,000km on it with a couple mods and got it for $4,500 during Covid time. Added bonus with these car was the lsd in the rear and the low 1st gear for clawing
I’m 17 now and at the start of 2020 I bought a 2.5l turbo 1993 nh Pajero with 230,000 km for $1000. It came with a dual battery setup and a heap of camping gear. Since then I’ve bought 2 other cheap pajeros one for 500 and one for 800 just for parts like, lift kit, bullbar and other stuff. So all up I’ve spent less than $2.5k. It’s been an awesome car, great for touring and goes up some tracks I didn’t think it would
Admittedly I did buy my 2016 Navara np300 new, and have spent a lot on modification. But I have to say this care has kept up with all the young blokes on some really tough tracks minimal mechanical issues. Without a doubt a much under rated vehicle
Rig 1; Bought a 76 G60 Patrol mwb soft top for $300, absolute rig, tough as guts, has been mod played for 31’s and bucket seats other than that it is stock. Rig 2; Td42T 89 Gq Patrol Wagon bought for 12k, has millweld bullbar, rock sliders, tube rear bar, 3” lift with remote res shocks, front air locker, 35” KM3’s on polished beadlocks and rooftop tent. Is my touring rig, am planning a trip to South Australia as Graham as convinced me it’s a spectacular place to check out. Rig 3; was my first car 03 TD42TI GU coil cab ute, bought for 30k, 4” lift, 315 Nitto trail grapplers, front AutoLokka, fully lockable canvas canopy full Raslarr barwork. This thing has taken me many places, Bought it when I was 17 and there isn’t many places I’m confident to drive in it. So reliable, tough as nails, just all round awesome ute. Definitely won’t win this Comp as Shaun’s running it, and well I have a Patrol addiction and not a Toyota addiction but what the hell, might as well have a crack
Just picked up a 2010 NT pajero for $18.5k. Love it so far and hasnt let me down. Goes awesome offroad even stock at the moment with just a set of BFG al terrains. The only thing to watch is the earlier model NS Pajeros have the DPF issues mentioned with the automatics but this was removed in the late 2009 and onwards models.
Paid $9k for my YD25 D22 Navara which was stock as a rock. Have since tuned and modded it and it now has 366,000kms on the clock with no issues. Mostly Vic High Country touring/wheeling and showing up with the Landcruisers and Hilux's on fairly tough tracks. Nothing better than winching or snatching a Toyota.
Terracans are awesome in the bush and surprisingly capable. They are based off the 2nd gen Pajero chassis, and many suspension components etc are interchangeable with pajeros. The 2.9 diesel is a great engine and will make it to half a mil easy. A 2-3" lift and 32s will give you an offroad weapon. The only real downside is a lack of local aftermarket accessories, however that's nothing a bit of custom work can't fix. As far as value for money goes, terracans are the cream of the crop for sure.
2002 Range Rover p38 HSE 4.6 v8 auto. $4,300 November last year, pulled the air sus out and put some 80 series springs in it, set of 33” MTZs off my old n80, $250 arb bar off a d1 and it’s done monkey gum, absolute flex machine with long Dobinsons in the front, not even 5k into it, sounds awesome, heaps of power and an animal off-road
Jeep Wrangler doesn’t really matter the year, best out of the box 4bie ever! Can change and upgrade every part, nut and bolt. Get a bad wrap in Aus but I know many many people that have never had an issue!
A couple years ago, I picked up a 1995 1hz non turbo 80 series for 14.5k, roughly 300,000kms. super straight body, awesome paint, came with drawers, dual battery setup, ARB under bonnet air compressor, 2" lift, brand new bfg all terrains and a few other clean mods. Absolutely unreal buy from a retired copper that looked after it! Also my first 4wd with vinyl floors/seats which has been unreal to keep clean with 3 gremlins, not sure I'd ever go carpet again. Cheers blokes!
1996 80 series with the 1hz engine, most reliable engine out there! yes some people still ask for a crazy amount of cash for them BUT once you factor in that its practically impossible to go fast enough to get a speeding ticket they become the best bang for your buck car out there!
The NP300 Navara. Bought mine for under $35,000 with less than 40,000k's on the clock (mid-range ST N-Sport). With the coil rear, a decent aftermarket suspension set-up, and 33's, there is not many places I haven't taken it. Comfortable tourer on the road as well for those longer trips such as Fraser island and the cape. Extremely well balanced 4wd and already running some Stedi gear, a set of type-x evo's would absolutely finish her off nicely!
There is no way to deny it the series 1 SWB pajero is the best bang for buck out there. Picked up a 1990 model for 2k bog stock with 170k on the clock. A quick crank on the torsion bars and a set of 33's bolt straight on. Factory LSD in the back mighty astron 2.6 in the front manual gearbox in the middle and 2 doors of shorty fun. It's all the fun of a zook at a quarter of the price.
My 2013 isuzu dmax is best bang for bucks 4wd I have owned, payed 25k for it has 220klms but very well looked after and full service history, came with heaps aswell bar, winch, under tray boxes, water tank, rhino roof rack, snorkel, front lokka, manual locking front hubs, duel battery, 2 inch lift, black wheels and ats, gvm upgrade to 3500kgs and has been tuned and dynoed. Absolutely stocked with it and is so much cheaper on fuel than my old gq tb42 patrol. I Absolutely love the car and it has taken me and my son on heaps of adventures and more to come. Keep up the good work.
I've got the best nang for buck rig around with the "honourably mentioned" 90 series Prado 👌👍😎 Considering this was put on the under 20k bracket I picked mine up for a bargain 10 years ago and paid $8k and it only had 132,000kms on it. I've given her the full treatment all over and it takes me anywhere I've wanted it to! It's also the ultimate rig because it's the first car I've ever truly loved 🥰👌👍😎
Best bang for buck. 2020 Nissan Frontier 4x4. Nisasn in the USA is very underrated and under-bought (at least until the 2022 came out). But the Gen2 is extremely capable. And the 2020 (and the 2021) came with the new 3.8L engine that puts out 310hp (231kW) and 281 ft-lb (381N) of torque and a9-speed Jatco auto, but it's still surrounded by the original body and no electrical problems. I got it for US$23k (and less than 20k miles). I couldn't find a similar Toyota Tacoma for less than $35K. The "Toyota Tax" in the USA is real. Starting to build it out, so those lights will be timely.
The d22 nissan navara has to be one of the best bang for buck utes. You can pick one up for around 10k. There a great first 4x4 and short distance tourer in my opinion. Heaps of acessories and spares availiable for them too!
Most have probably got an after market clutch in it too as the standard ones aren’t too great 😅d21’s on the other hand with the VG30 are super cool, had an 86 nav Japanese import was super fun.
90 series diesel auto Prado!!! Taken mine all over aus, all conditions, lived out of it for 6 months. No issues, super capable, and decent on diesel even when loaded up, and manageable in the city to boot! Bought it for $11k fairly stock with 212,000kms, spent another $5k and it's got it all for well under $20k.
The 2.5L yd25 navaras are criminaly underrated, they were made to compete with those notorious early hilux's but as a commonrail turbo desiel there fuel economy for a 4x4 is second to none whilst still producing similar power to the hilux's everyone raves on about. Mega reliable too.
I've got the 4M41 in my Triton and it's done about 350 000 hard kilometres touring through africa and it spent a few years as a farm UTE before I bought it aswell. I've had it for 50k km and I honestly can't fault it, extremely capable and unbelievably reliable. The 3.2 makes good power aswell and they go forever, probably the best 4 Cylinder diesel out there (Sorry 1KD boys) I blanked the EGR on around 330k km and took off the intake and it still looked great, didn't even bother cleaning it. It seems like the 4M41 didn't have the intake clogging problems in South Africa
Best bang for buck 4x4. 1st gen Rav4! No low range but lockable centre dif and rear LSD. Same driveline as the gt4 Celica. Is not fast with the 3fse, but it's a reliable small petrol that'll go 400,000k+. The best bit is though any of a series motors will match up to the gearbox so it's easy to swap in a 3sge for 200+ naturally aspirated ponies or a 3sgte for some turbo goodness. Super fun car on and off road and dirt cheap. Can still pick them up for less than 5k easily. Loved mine.
Have an NS Pajero - bought off my old man for $6k @280,000km now its is up to 390,000kms, not a single issue. I just blocked off the EGR and not a problem!
Best bang for buck is my 2007 Mazda bt50. Shauno called it ugly in the last episode but Chuck a bull bar on along with all the other standard mods on (tyres, lift, tray) and I’ve got myself a Ute that’ll out drive any patrol. And I’ve done it on high school wages. Cheers guys
@4WD247 I live in Austria and I own a 2007 Hyundai Terracan! And I love it! Made some Upgrades (OME Suspension, Full underbody Protection, ARB Locker, winch and BF Ko2) and with them the car is pretty amazing offroad. We are overlanding and offroading with the Hyundai and my fathers 2002 Mercedes G 400 and to be honest.. The Hyundai really stands his ground. Super reliable and comfortable even if you have to push a little bit harder to keep up. After all it is a 2. Gen Mitsubishi Pajero ☝️
Best bang for buck was easily my 105 GXL Cruiser. 6k for the Petrol 1FZ manual which has one of the best reliability reps of any petrol engine. 6k for Legendary Toyota reputation, easy to maintain as parts are everywhere and the chassis is simple, all the comforts of a more modern car with space to carry a family and the camping gear, capability to carry it anywhere you want. Tows 3.5t same as the more modern cars, all for under 10k total. Like I said, got mine for 6k, spent about 4k on preventative maintenance. Has now got 440k on the clock with no signs of failing any time soon. You just cannot get the same quality, capability, comfort, reliability and usability anywhere else in any other brand. P.S, I really would love some lights for the ARB bar please. Love your show, watching it out bush now in Cultana Range.
This is actually bonkers, was just saying to myself while doing the dishes I hope they make a 2023 edition of the best budget 4wd video...and when I go on yt here it is!
Ive had a TB42, and i can concur that they are tough as nails. I now have a TB45 and again tough as nails, bought the GQ for $1,800 and the GU for $8K been to some of the toughest parts of the Vic high country and could not fault the GQ. The GU is a grta tough off roader.
1998 Gu Nissan Patrol RD28TI, 377,000K 40MM suspension upgrade 20 yrs ago,Roo bar spotlights, UHF radio and a small roof basket for swags, 265/75/16 AT, rear seats removed and thats it, apart from regular servicing. Goes on 2 outback 10 day trips yearly, averages 14-15 Lph. absolutely excellent outback touring vehicle. Not a power house but goes almost anywhere. Love the old man.
Its gotta be the 3L turbo diesel Nissan Navara d22. Sub 20k and if your lucky sub 10k. Easy and cheap to build up to be a great off road rig. super under rated in my opinion
Ive got to say our 2002 V8 landcruiser 100 blew me away. For $9200 fully kitted out with a HUGE list of gear already. Its took us on a year long adventure all over Australia as well as a few others trips all while towing a camper and never struggled anywhere. Heaps of room for a big family plus gear, think 95litre fridge on a drop slide, plus a battery system with a drawer underneath and we could still use the other seat in the boot next to it! Was so capable compared to other rigs we toured with it was kind of boring at times. Love it!
2016 Toyota Hilux is a little bit over 30k in nz but is super reliable has lots of different options when it comes to modifying it and is very good for hunting with a flat deck on the back. love the video and gives ideas for other cars
2 years ago, mid covid, I picked up a 1999 td42 350000kms on the clock for 12k flat, came with steel bull bar and rear bar, 2 inch lift and fresh all terrains, faded paint loads of accessories later makes it look like a tourer in the mad max universe, also has all the wiring for 2 spotlights on the front but spotties were removed before I bought it...
2009 N70 Toyota Hilux is a little bit over 30k but is super reliable has lots of different options when it comes to modifying it and is very good for touring with a flat deck on the back and a decent setup, love the video fellas!
Having owned multiple, it's not a brand I can comfortably recommend. Too many risky problems that can occur if not careful. That being said - if you want to sink a bit of dosh into them, they can be bulletproof. I do miss driving my WRX, that thing was quick and torquey!
Got a 2002 105 diesel for under 20k. 360k, turbo. 3" lift, absolutely no rust and no panel damage, full bar work, brand new tyres, winch, roof cage, uhf, even threw in a bunch of free spares and a rear locker. Was done up for cape but never went, then was bought to tow a boat to syd then sat on driveway. Though i managed to get in within 30 mins of it being listed.
Nearly hit the nail on the head with the 90 series Prado but it’s predecessor in the 120 is the better bet. With petrol 4wds continuing to be criminally underrated the 120 1GRFE is the best combo for the under 20k if you look hard enough or even the mid 20’s to get one with low k’s and great condition. Commonly used for shopping so not flogged and those big powerful v6 motors are good for touring and towing also the motor used in the African 79’s due to there reliability.
100% agree, I have the Prado 120 2003 grande v6 petrol, take it everywhere and it’s never let us down. Towing a caravan we never have any power issues. River crossing tough muddy tracks in Vic high country just doesn’t miss a beat
Great episode, nice balance with the father and son duo 😂 Most recent purchase was a 2013 Prado 150, still has the 1kd but injectors are higher spec/ more reliable than in the 120s/ early 150s. Not the cheapest but figured it will hold its value so will get more money back on resale compared to NT/NX Pajero (was the other option I was looking at). Suits my needs perfectly as a family bus (comfortable/ spacious, but not too big), and occasional off-roader (beach runs, Pebbly Beach/ Moreton/ Fraser island camping). Came with a bullbar and planning to build it up over time for more serious adventures (touring more than hardcore stuff - Cape York, and eventually a half/ full lap). Better value buy was my previous purchase, 2011 PB Challenger. Arguably more capable in stock form (better clearance/ angles). Super select system is great, allows you to drive in 4H on paved roads, safer for families. Same platform/ reliability as NM Triton but more comfortable with coil rear end, and better equipment levels. More utilitarian to drive compared to the Prado though, hence the change. Prado 90 would definitely be the go under $10k for wagon lovers (like me), with older Challengers and Pathfinders (petrol only models) the best under $5k for those on a tight budget... 👌🏼 Stedi spotties now please. 😉
ZD30 gu patrol is the most bang for buck 4wd I understand the motor is nothing special but your getting a discounted price on the toughest driveline in the commercial market and if you look after that little grenade it’ll last just as long as those TD’s
2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara 1.9L turbo diesel, 5 speed manual! Had Dpf sorted and a remap and goes awesome! About to get 2inch lift and a bit bigger tyres! Can’t wait to test it out
very capable rigs. i have the 3.2 prestige model, 2.5" lift, 235/45/16's and it goes a many places. but before you go mad, id recommend you get a bash plate for the front to go under the radiator. the flimsy plastic panel does nothing if you scrape a rock or a clump of mud or sand. made one up with a sub frame on mine and i reckon it would have saved me around 8 or 9 radiators so far 😅
1999 to 2004 Land rover discovery 2 td5 with the manual and yes I know they will cost a bit to run but u can pick one up for under 10k or 20k for certain states (Nsw) if u know where to look. They are a awd system and awesome especially in the rain and I've been told they are a monster in snow only problem is bit hard to get parts here, but overall if u fix the main problems they will go everywhere u want to go and they are cheaper on diesel then a Toyota or Nissan. I have a 99 td5 manual and it has some problems but it out performs my mum's tb45 gu and that had the engine rebuild 100k ago
Disco 2 V8 here in the states 👋 love the snot out of the thing. Which is a problem because it requires all my love for it to keep running 😂 the way I see it, discos are always dying but refuse to actually die...
Picked myself up a 4x4 2009 Holden Colorado with plenty of fruit for $17,000! You cant beat a 4JJ1 farm car that's never been taken off road for that price. Don't get me wrong, it still smells like sheep, but the engine and driveline look pristine. Absolutely loving getting it all ready to take into high country Victoria as its my first 4WD. Thanks to you guys for helping to guide me in the right direction for bang for your buck deals on cars, I almost spent $60,000 on a brand new hilux, let alone the extras to get it touring ready. Appreciate your videos guys, cheers.
Not alot of people would agree with this, I would have to go with a 1998 xj jeep Cherokee. You don't see alot of them around these days however the engine in these vehicles are nearly bullet proof (hence the name the bullet proof 4.0 litre. As it goes stock standard it goes nicely off-road, with minor upgrades you can put a lift kit on it to fit bigger tires to go nearly anywhere. Thanks for having a read guys, have an amazing day!!
I have two of these things here in the states. There are tons of them over here - they're still cheap but the problem is the cheap ones are pretty beaten up and poorly modified, and the well-kept stock ones are becoming more and more expensive. Some are selling for close to their original MSRP nearly 30 years ago.
Hey guys, I really think the XJ is worth the mention.. Those 4.0l engines are bulletproof as long as the cooling system is in great working order. An absolute weapon of a 4wd..
1992 - 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ's absolute best car under 10k. They look great, have straight 6 4.0 with heaps of power, engine will never die and can get a cheaper, high Km's one for $3-5k no worries.
5 years back I got my 2013 Pajeo GLXR for $17k . Bullbar, LED driving lights , tow bar , electric brakes , airbags in rear suspension , rear dif lock , two battery set up with Anderson plugs at rear . Only issue I have had was doing all the wheel bearings/ hubs . 390k on the clock these days and still going as good as ever . Cheers guys
Some of us were on to how good the 4.8 GUs are ages ago 😂 I bought my series 3 ST auto in 2010 ..and still have it. An absolute beast and I have no plans to sell it anytime soon...
Our N70 Hilux is the best bang for buck as it was what we could afford at the time. Being that it was brand new at the time. We have set it up for touring an pulling our van around. Don’t think there is much more we want to do to it now but man we have had a lot of good times in it. Graham you might remember it when we met you at Joeys Nose a couple of years ago
Just as covid hit, I picked up a straight landcrusier 105, arb bar work front and back, swing away rear tyre carrier, toughdog 2 inch lift, adjustable shocks, the rest underneath being superior parts, all options, touch screen stereo, duel batterys, duel fuel tanks, draws in the back, tidy interior, big led spoties, 33 inch tyres, well looked after.. tidy tidy rig... $5000
I would have to say that the d22 navara single cab with the zd30 is one of the most underrated 4wd ever I brought an 04 for 3,800 2 years ago with 418,000 it was the most reliable car I’ve ever seen I put it through hell I done river crossings insane hill climbs recovered patrols,79s and even a few 80s I worked it a bit with a 3 inch lift 33 muddies and a stainless snorkel and box setup and it was the best until one day a young gentleman wrote it off on me wish I still had it
people sleep on the D22 Navara's, tough torsion bars (free lift) factory LSD and the YD 25 is a pretty strong motor mine has dne 400,xxx km's. running on 25 psi of boost for 4 years! They sit between the 10-15k mark making them quite affordable. My navara has taken me furthar than any hilux I have been in so people stop hating on the navara's! I'll admit the ZD 30 has a few problems however those models sit at 4k sometimes.
Jeep XJ, otherwise known as "The American GQ. You can pick them up for under 5k any day under 1k if you look hard enough, bulletproof engine, solid axle, coil front, leaf rear, goes anywhere! I picked mine up for 1k, so far fully kitted with lift, lockers, and full 12v system and camp kitchen im in under 10k. car has over 400k on the clock now and i still drive it every day and it barely ever misses a beat!
Just sold a mate my povvo spec d22 QD32 with turbo with twin diff locks for $3k. Winch, long range tank, dual battery setup That wins this competition. Period.
Hey Guys, I have to say my 2010 Nissan D40 with 148,000 on the odometer is a great buy. It runs like a top. And has given me absolutely no issues. It starts no matter how Hot or Cold it may be. And it set me back $7000.00 every thing works as it should it has freezing cold A/C and blistering heat that will run you out. I know every time I turn that Key I’m off an adventure. She has No Rust and No Dents but severely Faded Paint. All she needs now is some Nice Lighting up front.
My TB42 Ford Maverick. I got it for free off the old man when I lost a company car. He bought it for $2k about 10 years ago, stuck it in a barn and forgot about it. Got to spend a few years learning how to fix it with him before he passed away last year. Given me a more confidence to work on my other cars without his wealth of knowledge to fall back on
Under 10k a 2003 Holden rodeo 4jh1. Very reliable 4j engines. Near bulletproof and capable vehicles. 500+thousand and handles a beating. Very underrated 4x4
Terracan, I took a trip to Cape York in 2010. Wheeling a Terracan was a 68 year old recently widowed chap with zero off road experience. We had him fit BFG A/T's all round, snorkel, 40mm lift + an alloy bar. In his inexperienced hands it went everywhere the group did. On arrival at the Pascoe River (french line) 4 guys in lifted Patrols laughed and scoffed saying it'd never make it. Unfortunately they didnt witness old mate take on the Pascoe & succeed, then the Wenlock also. He undertook all challenges except he couldn't summon the nerve to drop it down gunshot, so he backtracked the whole way , then bypass to meet us on the nth side. Then Nolan Brook, all in the inexperienced hands of our old mate. Old mate got such a buzz out of the trip he followed others into the Simpson and out. Terracan was certainly capable. Old mate came straight home and updated into a new 200, haha, certainly got the off road bug. Graham, they were ugly, but as we witnessed, very capable.
I picked up a petrol D40 Navara for $2000 and it’s a ripper of a ute. Perfect for an apprentice Tradie who likes to hit the tracks/camp grounds on a weekend
Bit left of field, but my budget rig is the best budget rig. It's a 2001 PA challenger. Bought it, and built it over covid for under 10k, and it goes anywhere and everywhere. The 3.0L V6 makes a decent chunk of power, with a bit of maintenance they're properly reliable and with some basic mods (~60mm lift with patrol rear springs, torsion bars wound up, front and rear bar work pinched from the wreckers and some decent 33" ATs) and its mint. Perfect first 4x4 to cut your teeth on. I managed to snag an LS model with the factory hybrid LSD, and stuffed in an auto locker up front, and it's properly capable. Great in the high country, fantastic in the mud and slop and an absolute weapon in the sand, and all for sub 10k AUD.
I bought my 1fz 80 for under 7k, I have been all over Australia in it and it’s never let me down. Close to 500k on it still unopened and runs like a dream!
I’ve got the best bang for buck!! I’ve got a 2005 sr5 hilux v6 for $5k with 300,000 on the clock. These cars would be normally be $20k + but I was lucky enough to get mine for 5k. There was nothing wrong with the car, yes it’s a petrol and it does drink a lot but this car has blow my expectations away of it’s capabilities with 4wding. The power and torque have always been there and I’ve able to archive some amazing things like climbing up huge rock steps, drive up the highest sand dune and get thought so crazy mud holes and so much more! It’s also very comfortable and a great daily to drive to work and home and even stop at the shops and get some groceries. Heaps of aftermarket support and heaps of spare parts for these cars as well if I ever need to replace something.
About 5 years ago i bought a nissan navara for $4k. Last year I straight swapped that navara for an FG ford ute. 6 months later i straight swapped that for a TD42 GQ - cant get much more bang for buck than that!!
the Jackeroo here in England is the Isuzu Trooper . we had the 3.1 (bullet proof, not much oomph) and the 3.0 which was like a tractor engine.. and yes the problems mentioned.. but lots of torque. I had a few 3.1s Had the Delica, and the gen 2 Pajero with same 2.8TD engine.. was using it until other week. I then got a N70 Hilux. A 2010 double cab. I got the 2.5 engine for one reason.. it COMES with a rear locker... here the 3 litre (which is what you get down under) only has LSD... i needed the rear locker.. In last month added Pedders heavy duty 2 inch suspension.. and yesterday are you call them metal bar work... just got to get a winch. Your modern Nissans and Isuzu we dont get here, or those very old Nissan Patrols. Taking my Hilux to Ukraine in a few weeks, to help the animals etc. I was there last year in the Gen 2 Pajero

I think the best 4x4 is the one that is within your budget no matter what badge is on the front, the kind that fits your requirements to get you out there for adventure after all its the journey and adventure that matters the most.
Don't 4get hopefully IT'S GOINT 2 GET YOU BACK AS WELL.
@@RedRabbit4230 maintenance and not pushing the vehicle to its limits, is my approach
My d22 navara 3L zd30 was a great bargain buy. Picked it up for $4000 at 350,000kms in 2020 and now at 440,000kms and still going strong with no issues in my ownership just usual maintenance and check’s before every trip. Never seen a d22 fully kitted out like more popular models of 4x4 and personally can’t see why not it’s a great base for a build.
same dude i have 02 D22 3L zd30 off me old man who could no longer drive it sadly, i got it at 102,000km :) the kids love going out on random adventures
have to agree mate, theyre a great beginner 4wd and definitely capable with a few small mods. sad to say I don't think I've ever heard these guys mention it
I plan to get the 2016 st-x Navara we’ve got them as work trucks they’re a bloody good platform
So good to see father and son talking & catching up online
D22's are amazing. They are great bang for buck
Do you Aussies ever have issues with the bottom ends going on the YD25? Something to do with the shells and conrod bolts being shit from factory?
Just came to mention, the same thing, They missed the D22, such a great 4x4
The RA Holden Rodeo honestly can’t be beat for the money. I picked mine up as my first car for $8K, absolutely immaculate for a 4x4 that cheap. With a bulletproof Isuzu 6ve1 3.5 petrol making 200hp, and also available in the 4jh1, i cant think of anything better! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for an amazing 4x4 whilst not breaking the bank! Much love boys 👋
I think the Pajero is super under appreciated! They have everything you need, super comfy, and plenty of power
absolute crap I don’t know anyone who has own the Pajero of this body type that has not had to rebuild the engine due to blowing head gaskets etc if you like wasting your money and they absolutely crap on the beach.
You’re talking kak my friend
Edit: The 4M41 from about 2009+ is the best. The diesel engine in the Gen 3s were known to have funky fuel pumps etc.
Yeh I should've been more specific, I meant the fourth gen with the 3.2 4M41
So true, could not agree more bro!!
Up the mighty 90 love mine
This bloke is spot on!
the 90s are awesome rigs, super underrated👍😍
Massively underrated and overlooked off-road vehicle.
Glad someone said it 👏🏼
I just brought a 2010 NT Pajero with 280k km, perfect service history. It’s the Activ option so it’s full leather, tjm snorkel, alloy winch bar, bash plates, 170l long range tanks, rhino roof platform and a 2 inch koni lift. $21,000. Vic high country was fun and Fraser in October will be even better. Cheers boys👍
Pajeros all the way lad
100% agree. Even with there limited amount of flex (if standard) they'll still crawl just about anything due to there traction control system and diff lock, not to mention the super select 4wd system. Pick of the bunch defintely a Gen 4 with factory lockers.
I bought my HDJ100 Landcruiser for 11k in 2019
Have since done 100,000km+ now reaching the 500,000km mark but continues to be daily driven and using 9l/100 of diesel.
Fair to say it's been the best bang for buck 4wd. Cheers
Discovery 2 2003-2004 under 10k
With proper maintenance is a very reliable car.
I love my v8 Disco. By no means fuel efficient but far out does it get me going when I put my foot down
Had two of them v8s both died from mass air flow sensor failure and a huge backfire
Definitely agree, my 01 Td5 had 300 000km on it. Had not had a single issue. Remapped, suspension lift and 33s on it and it goes anywhere. Absolute monsters.
@@jamesfallon7788 yea as I said td5 if efficient not at all the v8 but I love the sound
Gotta be one of the most underrated rigs out
I agree with you, I have a 3.0 petrol 4 runner, 410,000 ks and goes hard everyday
I can't believe neither of you mentioned a dual cab vdj79 series, i think they would fit in the 10k price bracket, have plenty of technology for their era, very fuel efficient, lots of clearance, lots of flex and tons of power, very under rated vehicle
I'd love to find a 79 for 10k...
😂😂😂😂
We're in trouble if you find a 79 under 10k...
cant seem to find a dual cab for less than 65k...
Gosh they can be ugly tho
I recently bought a 2013 3.0L Turbo Diesel Hilux with 175,000kms for $26000, has a 12v system with 2 batteries, full bar work, spotlights, 2” suspension lift, new tyres and a fridge. A very good buy.
In my opinion a d22 navara is the best bang for your buck rig. I only paid 11k for mine and spend about 1k on mods and it is a weapon that will take me anywhere
.
Yes, i agree. Love my D22.
Just hit 350k on my ZD30. Best thing I've ever spent 11k on.
I’ve got one here in Aussie with over 400,000kms, still on the original motor and going strong.
Never broken anything mechanical. But the radiator
*alternator
Jock is great in this episode. Dude knows his stuff!
-Insanely reliable petrol engine, often the interior and body are in near new condition. nearly always under 10k
-comes from the factory with 2 fuel tanks.
-very strong driveline.
-decent clearance from factory
-very good wheelbase and overall size for both a touring rig and a daily driver around town.
- good parts availability due to sharing so many parts with other Toyota models like the hilux.
what more can you ask for in an entry 4x4? you basically don't even have to mod them.
i'm super excited to get out there and hit the trails for the first time.
How many kms was it at when you bought it?
@@jayypee8103 250,000
TD5 Land Rover Discovery 2's are criminally under rated in Australia. Can't change my mind
I love my 2014 PC
The best model and is criminally underrated. Love mine
Nothing better than winching or snatching a Toyota.
d22s are very capable rigs on 33s they outdrive every other ifs dual cab except maybe the n70s
I have a 95 and want to swap mine from carpet to vinyl would be so much better with 5 gremlins lol😂😂😂😂😂
Those 2.6 astron motors go hard
I've got the best nang for buck rig around with the "honourably mentioned" 90 series Prado 👌👍😎
Considering this was put on the under 20k bracket I picked mine up for a bargain 10 years ago and paid $8k and it only had 132,000kms on it. I've given her the full treatment all over and it takes me anywhere I've wanted it to!
It's also the ultimate rig because it's the first car I've ever truly loved 🥰👌👍😎
Had fun with the emoji board mate ?

My YD25 D22 has been the most reliable car I've ever owned!!
Sadly they won't recommend it.. It's a nissan.. People are commenting about d22 every time they post about cheap 4wds
Idk about that I’ve lost count of the amount of blown turbos these have came in with
Mine has 330k’s on it, very reliable and is great off road also
I've got the 4M41 in my Triton and it's done about 350 000 hard kilometres touring through africa and it spent a few years as a farm UTE before I bought it aswell. I've had it for 50k km and I honestly can't fault it, extremely capable and unbelievably reliable. The 3.2 makes good power aswell and they go forever, probably the best 4 Cylinder diesel out there (Sorry 1KD boys)
I blanked the EGR on around 330k km and took off the intake and it still looked great, didn't even bother cleaning it. It seems like the 4M41 didn't have the intake clogging problems in South Africa
3.4L Petrol PRADO 90 series
❤🎉 rear flex 💪🏽 is eye opening
That’s exactly what I have. Can I ask you questions about it though?
Best bang for buck 4x4. 1st gen Rav4! No low range but lockable centre dif and rear LSD. Same driveline as the gt4 Celica. Is not fast with the 3fse, but it's a reliable small petrol that'll go 400,000k+. The best bit is though any of a series motors will match up to the gearbox so it's easy to swap in a 3sge for 200+ naturally aspirated ponies or a 3sgte for some turbo goodness. Super fun car on and off road and dirt cheap. Can still pick them up for less than 5k easily. Loved mine.
Shauno must be heading to the USA when this was taped.
Big things coming mate! 🤫
I bought a 4x4 and moved 15 hours across the country to be within a days drive to the places he'll be going to drive. Beautiful side of the country.
Cheers guys
Got my patrol for 3k coils and solid axles and a turbo diesel doubt a bt is gonna outdrive it
bts are solid rigs mate nice one
My car was already mentioned, the RC Colorado. Got mine for $12k and have now set it up as a tourer. Absolutely love it!
I have a Terracan fitted out with some extras, definitely an underrated 4wd
Stoked to see the Subies get a mention! Great round up!
We knew what you were thinking mate! 😉🔮
Ive had a TB42, and i can concur that they are tough as nails. I now have a TB45 and again tough as nails, bought the GQ for $1,800 and the GU for $8K been to some of the toughest parts of the Vic high country and could not fault the GQ. The GU is a grta tough off roader.
FZ 105 Landcruiser has to be best bang for buck. Bought mine for $11K with 250kms. Bullet proof motor, plenty of power, very underrated imo
$3800 with 352 but it’s a gxl n clean as hell zero rust and grandpa spec I had to pull the plastics to fit the roof racks
Love it!
How is that even possible 9.2k for a v8 landcruiser know bloody way that is the biggest bargin on the internet
NP300 Navara, cheap, reliable, factory diff lock, coil rear, huge aftermarket support great all rounder!
Finally a Subaru has been mentioned, most underrated 4wd
*AWD
@@s.b9913 some of the outbacks are 4WD
Having owned multiple, it's not a brand I can comfortably recommend. Too many risky problems that can occur if not careful. That being said - if you want to sink a bit of dosh into them, they can be bulletproof. I do miss driving my WRX, that thing was quick and torquey!
Nope they are AWD never 4wd
Agree. The motor is big in the states in Tacoma's etc. Keep up the regular services and they will go forever.
100% agree, I have the Prado 120 2003 grande v6 petrol, take it everywhere and it’s never let us down. Towing a caravan we never have any power issues. River crossing tough muddy tracks in Vic high country just doesn’t miss a beat
Great episode, nice balance with the father and son duo 😂
Most recent purchase was a 2013 Prado 150, still has the 1kd but injectors are higher spec/ more reliable than in the 120s/ early 150s.
Stedi spotties now please.
The big American GQ
American GQ
I've heard its the American GQ
I have two of these things here in the states. There are tons of them over here - they're still cheap but the problem is the cheap ones are pretty beaten up and poorly modified, and the well-kept stock ones are becoming more and more expensive. Some are selling for close to their original MSRP nearly 30 years ago.
Hey guys, I really think the XJ is worth the mention.. Those 4.0l engines are bulletproof as long as the cooling system is in great working order. An absolute weapon of a 4wd..
D40 V6 petrol Navara, because it works and goes everywhere. Totally underrated 170k on the clock and no issues at all
1992 - 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ's absolute best car under 10k.
Best motor they put in the patrol I reckon
I would have to say that the d22 navara single cab with the zd30 is one of the most underrated 4wd ever I brought an 04 for 3,800 2 years ago with 418,000 it was the most reliable car I’ve ever seen I put it through hell I done river crossings insane hill climbs recovered patrols,79s and even a few 80s I worked it a bit with a 3 inch lift 33 muddies and a stainless snorkel and box setup and it was the best until one day a young gentleman wrote it off on me wish I still had it
Wow, this episode reminds me of the new movies that come out lately !
Same story line !
Must be getting short on ideas for episode's.
people sleep on the D22 Navara's, tough torsion bars (free lift) factory LSD and the YD 25 is a pretty strong motor mine has dne 400,xxx km's. running on 25 psi of boost for 4 years!
Winch, long range tank, dual battery setup
That wins this competition.
All she needs now is some Nice Lighting up front.
peice of garbage cars absolute rubbish buy a d22 mate
My TB42 Ford Maverick. I got it for free off the old man when I lost a company car. He bought it for $2k about 10 years ago, stuck it in a barn and forgot about it. Got to spend a few years learning how to fix it with him before he passed away last year. Given me a more confidence to work on my other cars without his wealth of knowledge to fall back on
Under 10k a 2003 Holden rodeo 4jh1. Very reliable 4j engines. Near bulletproof and capable vehicles. 500+thousand and handles a beating. Very underrated 4x4
Paid $19,000 for 2013 D22 4 years ago, has been driven from beach to bush with only $200 (so far) offroad breakage,
Terracan, I took a trip to Cape York in 2010.
Nav d40 2013 and r51 pathfinder model has been awesome never given us and problems and taken us everywhere
I bought my 1fz 80 for under 7k, I have been all over Australia in it and it’s never let me down. Close to 500k on it still unopened and runs like a dream!
Got mine for 7 aswell, indestructible!!!
