So... Just a very rough, rule of thumb that I go by. I want to deliver a minimum of 400 ft/lb to the coyote. Minimum. Not 400 ft/lb at the muzzle, 400 ft/lb at the at the terminal end. Minimum. My .17 Predator load delivers that at 500 yards. By comparison, a typical .17 Rem. load delivers 400 ft/lb out to only 300 yards. The ability to drive heavier, higher BC, 30 gr. bullets at velocities above typical .17 Rem. loads for 25 gr. bullets really translates into some real world significant longer range performance.
I have a 17hmr I want to shoot coyotes here in AZ with. I normally use 223 . What would you recommend? My shots are never past 80 yards with my 223 and I imagine about the same with my 17hmr. Any advice would be helpful as this is my first 17hmr experience
@wildamericanarchery5129 Im here in AZ also. Have not tried a 17hmr yet. Brother in law has one but stuck to his 22-250. Ive done a 204r and love the low recoil. Getting ready to build a 20 practical
@@DaveAffleck Yeah id say so at those speeds…That’s impressive! Pretty rare I hear of a cartridge I’m not familiar with. Im a big Weatherby fan so I love flat and fast for hunting haha
@@Weatherby406 I am all about fast and flat! In a big way. My main three squeezes for coyote are the .17 Predator, the .20-250 (not the .22) and a 6-284 using 55's at 4300 fps. If you want to see more than you ever wanted to about fast and flat, check out my .20-250 write up here coyotestuff.com/articles/the-20-250-an-extreme-predator-cartridge/
Freaking love this, a classic! Much love to fans of the .17.
That sounds way louder than a .17hmr
I have the 17 WSM and can't even find ammo for it
What do you think is the min velocity or energy for coyotes with a .17 cal?

I assume you're using 17 Remington. That's a neat predator cartridge.
Pretty similar to the .17 Rem. It's a wildcat called the .17 Predator. More capacity than the .17 Rem and runs 30 gr. bullets about 200 fps faster.
@@DaveAffleck amazing
@artiomvv569 here is an article I wrote about the .17P, more than anyone ever wanted to know about it, lol! coyotestuff.com/articles/my-17-predator/
@@DaveAffleck just finished reading it and it was pretty cool. That's a very good article. That cartridge is impressive.
What does it compare like to the 17 stinger with a muzzle volacity of 5040 ft per second.
How does that compare with the .17wsm?
Alex, the comparison would be similar to comparing a .22 Mag to a .22-250. The load I use in the .17 Predator is a 30 grain bullet at 4,100 fps.

@@Weatherby406 wmr doesn’t mean weatherby it means Winchester
Time to target is better then MK262.
No chance half of those shots were a .17 hmr
No chance any of them are HMR. They're all .17 Predator.
yardage data would be nice sir
The farthest of these was only about 250 yards. Being called in coyotes, the idea is to get them in close!
