100 yard coin challenge with a .17 HMR

  • Halfmilesniper takes up the challenge of hitting coins with a .17 HMR from 100 yards. Doing a 100 yard coin challenge is just a little more difficult than shooting coins from about 10 yards as others have done.
    I am using my CZ American rifle, topped with a Nikon BDC 3x9 scope and supported by a 9 inch Harris bipod. For rear support I am only using a squeeze bag.

    Is that the switch-barrel model? I have the 452 American with the heavy, fluted and threaded 16" tube. Amazing gun, and why I got my 527 in 7.62x39.

    I just found your video. I had done this same coin challenge last weekend with a quarter, nickel, penny and dime shooting a .223. I had shot the quarter twice because I thought the bullet would push the coin right through the card board. Both were solid hits. The nickel was a single shot and hit. Started having trouble on the penny, it took four shots to get a good hit on it. The dime I nicked on the first shot and third shot then drilled it with the fourth. I think I'm going to try it again with my .17 HMR soon.

    I tried lots of different rounds in my Anschutz 1727. It loves the CCI TNT and will consistently shoot half inch 4-shot groups at 100 yards. Five consecutive groups measured .35 .36 .65 .72 .56 CTC. Three of the groups could be covered with a dime. Hornady VMax are a close second. The 17HMR is very accurate but sensitive to the wind. The trick is to send the rounds down range as fast as possible before the wind changes. The Fortner actions lets me send the 4 rounds downrange before I take a second breath. I was shooting prone with a bipod and a rear leather bag. The only problem is that I cannot blame the rifle when I miss!!

    • @Halfmilesniper
      @Halfmilesniper  Месяц назад

      Interesting question. For 100 yards and in, I'm not sure there is a best. My 17 HMR has an old Nikon BDC reticle scope which is pretty nice. My longer range rifles have Vortex, which are great at 100 too. I shot my best group ever, a .1" group, using a PFI Rapid Reticle RR Evolution. I would say to find a scope in the price range you are comfortable with, which has the clearest glass.
      You do want some magnification, so any of the varible power scopes will fit that need but remember, the more you zoom in the smaller your field of view is and the more likely you will be able to even see your heartbeat in the movement of the reticle.

      They do Chris...it is a wildcat cartridge, the .17-223. Never seen one myself and have no idea how well it works but the fact remains someone has tried. And, back in the early '70s Remington took a stab with the .17 Remington...another .223 necked down to .17. Supposedly these both produce about 4,000 FPS at the muzzle.

      Well Sir, I don't actually have any dimensions as I built this on the fly. But, you have given me an idea for a video since I am "behind" and unable to squeeze on the range right now. I can do a video on the table, get measurements and discuss how I made it. Thanks for the idea! I'll reply again when the video is up if you aren't subbed.
