That was the medium that got them their Fans, and they were saying "We remember you were our friend" in particular, the line "... someone still loves you" Also, in my Mind's eye, every time I hear this, I see the Masses at Wembley, as kinda' co-performers when Queen played Live-Aid

Queen was far more than just Freddie Mercury. Their sound and their songs were not just down to him. Three of the four band members sang and all wrote songs for the band. Radio Ga Ga was written by Roger Taylor, the drummer.

I was at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in Wembley back in 1992 and on my mates shoulders to watch 75 thousand fans clapping in sink during this song, it was a mind blowing experience i will never forget. I still get goose bumps when i think about it.
Here, in the UK, in the 1950s and 1960s, those of us of a certain age would go to bed at night with our little transistor radios and listen to Radio Luxembourg. In the late evenings and through the night, despite all the interference and a signal waving in and out of tune, we'd listen to the latest pop music under the covers. In those days, we didn't have FM so we had to put up with poor reception from a transmitter in the heart of Europe. So we can relate to this and that is why Roger wrote it because he is also of a certain age! Edit: I completely forgot but who also remembers the football pools ads from a company in K E Y N S H A M and Alan 'Fluff' Freeman and Pick of the Pops before he took it to the BBC Light Programme?
Yes, I did that! Normal radio had documentary and political programs, comedy shows, even soap operas, etc. Pop stations had a set playlist but Radio Caroline and Radio Luxembourg were 'pirate' stations that played everything. Terrible reception tho 😂 Weren't they at sea?
My brother and I did the same here in the USA in the 70s. Pre-early teens we shared a bedroom and there was always talking after the lights were out. But then my brother got a transistor radio and we would turn it on with the volume very low and fall asleep with the sounds of music and the night time DJs. Something special as they always had such a soothing voice back then on tjose night shifts.
One of their more under rated songs which I personally love is "Who wants to live forever". They also did a soundtrack song for "Highlander". One of the most iconic groups in music history!!
That is the song I want played at my funeral. And when you understand the context from the Highlander film, so incredibly moving and impactful. Not that it's bad without seeing the film, but it's so much better with that context. That song is what prompted me to buy my first Queen album and to learn as I continued to buy more of their music until I had all of the albums that they were the artists responsible for most of my favorite childhood songs all along, including Radio Gaga, my favorite when I was 8.

Great reaction guys! In a nutshell, this was really about MTV (and music video in general) competing with radio. MTV launched in 1981, and the first video they played was "Video Killed the Radio Star." Many 60s/70s artists faded away if they couldn't present their music/art in video form, along with having a cool look (hair, makeup, fashion, etc.). Music was King - dance, film, and the fashion industry were deeply tied into it, especially the film industry. Soundtracks would sometimes be more successful than the actual film, and most films had a soundtrack. It was important to have your video on MTV in heavy rotation. In the 80s, there was an issue of whether artists would release their newest music on the radio first or on MTV first.

Amber, you got the meaning exactly right. My mom used to tear up whenever she heard this song because it made her nostalgic for her childhood when the whole family did gather around the radio at night. That was their television, and she was a huge fan of the Little Orphan Annie show (just like Ralphie in A Christmas Story haha). When this song came out, music videos were just getting popular and Roger Taylor was missing the old days where it was the music that mattered most. Sidenote, when I was younger I always assumed Freddie wrote the lyrics to all the Queen songs. I’ve since learned that it was Roger who wrote all my favorites, and this one is no exception.
As an old dude, I find it hard to comprehend how many young reactors can say, "so and so is one of my favorite artists" and then they have only heard a couple few songs. When I was young if you liked a band, you bought their records and you knew ALL their songs. In fact, most often, your favorite song on an album was not even one that was a hit or a single. These days people discover and consume music completely differently than they did in my generation. We bought albums and listened to every song. These days people only know the songs that are hits, which are the songs that get recommended on Spotify. They just don't get recommended the 6th song on an album, and so they never hear it. Same with youtube reactors getting recommendations in the comments, most people are going to recommend the hits and the singles, not the B-sides, not the 7th or 8th or tenth song on an album. It's a shame really, because a lot of great music is not getting heard.
Oh I agree. I listened to my first album in its entirety with Luca the other day and I totally understand why people say it’s better that way. Also I love to look at songs that are those “number 8’s” on the track. I don’t want to ever do just popular songs. Some of those less popular songs have meanings that hit certain people the right way and are certainly worth listening to. Hopefully we get to dive deeper in these albums as we continue to learn.
@@RobSquadReactions I would say You Take My Breath Away is an incredible side of Freddie you’d both love. But the first three albums are great. They’re the only band where all members wrote #1 songs. Plus, the drummer Roger Taylor (the high voice) and guitarist Brian May also sing leads on some songs. It’s not always Freddie on lead vocals.
I'd add that they're not sticking to one genre like many people do when first getting into music. They've sampled a little of nearly every genre, and I love it.
I think part of it is we just suggest the hot songs because we think they will get it easier. It is up to us to suggest lesser known songs to help them see the depth of some artists. We didn’t have the ability to pick and choose songs when we were kids unless we wanted to just stand next to the turn table all day. So, we played the whole thing. And my favorite song on an album would change from week to week.
Some thoughts based on your commentary: The radio was what TV is today. There was a show back in the 1970s called "The Waltons". The show took place mainly during the Great Depression but in most of the episodes, you'd see the whole clan gathered around their new radio listening to news and shows and what-not. Now we have Alexa playing music in the background while we clean the house or play video games (well, at least I do). Also, the very first song played on MTV when it debuted back in 1980s was by the Buggles called "Video Killed the Radio Star". What I got from that song was, because of videos, an artist couldn't only sound good, now they had to look good, learn how to dance or how to act and how to lip-synch properly. The music industry became so much more than having a popular song and selling a bunch of albums. But this is what change is. I'm 60 now. If I were to live another 60 years, I imagine I'd see a whole bunch of stuff that I couldn't even imagine now. But yes, most (not all!) modern music sucks and is very shallow.

Queen never fails. Something you might find interesting; some of the b&w footage is from a movie called 'Metropolis', which was astounding in its day (1927). Freddie in front of the huge dial, moving the arms is an homage to that movie, as well, as that's one of the scenes. Metropolis was all about privilege and the abuse of the working class, and is one of my favorite movies.
George Lucas took the movie Metropolis as his inspiration for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith, particularly when he set most of it in Coruscant.

There's no doubt Freddie Mercury is in his own league. But what really makes Queen special is the band. All 4 are so versatile and talented they mesh together as one. Crazy I have about 3 of their 8 tracks tapes still to this day.!! RIP Freddie!!!
My husband growing up in Boston, always says his finest Red Sox memories were listening to games on the radio over watching on TV. It was so much more descriptive...So much more colorful. You really had to use your imagination. Often to this day, he will put a baseball game on TV with the sound off and the radio broadcast on...Also, it's the Music, The old school chatter, The DJ's introducing the songs. They were all part of our youth and carry on to this day. Jordan you need to open your mind and become a radio guy!!! ;)

I think you are ready for live aid. Its 20 minutes and considered one of the best performances live ever, if not THE best one. Live aid was a benefits concerts for hunger in Africa and included all the best bands and artists of the time but Queen came on and made the biggest impact. Everyone left in love with Queen and especially Freddie. You will love it. Still many more songs and live performances after live aid but its a great one at this point in your journey. Yes -- watch the Live Aid performance! It includes Radio Gaga, an abbreviated Bohemian Rhapsody, and other treats. The main reason to watch it I'd the cumulative energy that builds between Queen and the enormous crowd and how Freddie OWNS then. FYI, during Queen's South American tour, they drew 350 k to their chows in Argentina, then 500 k to them in Brazil. Facebook has video of their show in Argentina.
The Live Aid concert version of Hammer To Fall is one of my top favorite Queen songs. Back in the day if you didn’t want to listen to the radio you read the paper or sat around the piano or a phonograph for a sing along. Some families had children (usually girls) that played the piano in the parlor for background. We didn’t miss TV cuz we couldn’t even conceive of it. I didn’t have tv growing up and while I knew people that did I didn’t miss it.
My love of radio began in 1962.🤪 I got a transistor radio for my 10th birthday!🤭 It came with a single ear plug 'cause everything was mono back then, no stereo.💯 Later on in my life I listened to my car radio with stereo, my record player, my 8 track cassette player, cassette tapes, laser discs, CDs, and finally the Internet!😅 What a long strange trip it's been!🤗Radio....someone still loves you!😁❤✌

I've said it and so have so many others, you HAVE to react to their entire performance at Live Aid. Freddy was performing against doctor's orders and they came out and OWNED the crowd at Wembley Stadium.

In all honesty, you should have an entire playlist of reactions dedicated solely to Queen. Their discography is vast and a pure joy to listen to. Such versatility and eclectic style rarely can be found in other bands. Four men with absolutely amazing talent for their craft. Brian May- a composer of their more hard rock orientated songs, brilliant guitarist and -just a fun fact- a licensed astro-physicist. Roger Taylor- also a composer of many songs- Radio Ga Ga included-, an excellent drummer and the one with the highest vocal pitch. He often did the background vocals in live shows, always helping Freddie. John Deacon- what an amazing bassist. His legendary riffs in Another One Bites The Dust, Under Pressure (to name a few) are recognized at the first note to this day. Also, a talented composer and producer. Freddy Mercury- what else can be said about his genius that haven't been told already? Voice of an angel, virtuoso pianist, composer, front man and entertainer of high caliber. What a joy and experience to see him performing live. He could command a sea of people only by raising his hand. Speaking of live performance, check out their number at Live Aid. Everyone agrees they had the best performance among all the stars invited to perform.

Yes. Just as several have told you in comments. You MUST see Queen at Live Aid '85 in Wembley Stadium. Many critics call it the best live performance by any band ever. Performed right after their two year hiatus. Also, it was right after Freddy was diagnosed with AIDS. Making his performance even more amazing. His command of the huge audience is spectacular. You're missing out.

I was a huge fan of Queen, personally saw them live 3 times, the last 3 feet from the stage! By Live Aid, I was a single mom, my Maria was 6 months. Clearly I could not attend despite being a local Philadelphia native. It was an amazing show! My Maria and my newer babe, Alexa, are huge fans. Teach your children well!
This song was written by Roger Taylor, so you got one from each of the non-Freddies of Queen today, and you got to see how well Freddie is even able to smash songs that are not his own. Thank you for this reaction and this tribute day. We didn't have TV so nearly all of our entertainment and information came to us via radio. Also all of our music came to us from radio and from there we would buy the records. This song is about the hope that radio music will remain and not be replaced by music videos. Music videos tend to tell you what to think, how to interpret the song instead of letting it become whatever you deem it to be. Also it has come to be that losing radio as out major source of music has limited our variety of music, we tend to pick a few groups and kind of stay within their music or just one genre. Radio was going 24/7 so they had to play a bit of everything so as not to bore their audiences so we would hear decades of music every day and learned to appreciate so much more music. Radio was a very educational media and I really do miss it. If you ever get the opportunity just to listen on your own, check out Firesign Theater. They were from the 70s and 80s but they wrote and performed radio shows. Turn off the lights and put on the headphones and let the sound effects and stories take you away. It is like getting lost in a great book only with sound effects and someone acting out the stories. I would recommend their Nick Danger shows, Nick Danger is a private detective (They call him Private Dick) and they are mystery type performances. Don't let your preconceived thoughts block you, you can find Firesign Theater right here on RUclips. Spread your wings and kick back and relax listen to what radio was all about .
One of the reasons Queen is a favorite of mine is because they don't always sound the same. I remember playing a best of Queen while my teenage son was there and he finally said I never realized those songs were all Queen. I hope you listen to Don't Stop me Now. Such a good one.
Their Live Aid 1985 version of this is better in my opinion! It's a faster tempo. This is definitely my favorite of theirs. Love the beginning that mentions "War of the Worlds" and other radio dramatizations. Also love the line that starts " so don't become some background noise". It always resonates with me. R.I.P. Queens live aid performance was second to none. You really have to see it to believe it. Being 13 watching it on tv and it was a wow moment. You wouldnt be disappointed.

Freddie is King, but you have to give props to Brian, John, & Roger too. While most groups have one or two composers & the others provide their musical talent, Queen is one of the few which has garnered numerous chart topping hit songs, written by each member of the band. Everyone is saying to check out their performance at Live Aid 1985 - yes, it's a definite watch... but Queen Live at Wembley 1986 is one that every Queen fan must see, if they haven't already numerous times. Live Aid is only a 20 minute show, but 1986 Live @ Wembley is a full concert. Freddie playing the audience & such during the show is not censored, as the televised Live Aid was.
You should watch the movie Highlander. The soundtrack is by Queen and it's loaded with great music. You could react to Flash's Theme from Flash Gordon by them too. The video has the same feel as this.
When you check out the Live Aid gig, as you must, bear this in mind. In 1985, Queen were on a bit of a downer, had been for a couple of years and had gone out of the limelight. The performers that day were getting criticised for cynical virtue signaling and using a good cause to flog records, in some cases rightly so. Then Freddie (and the guys) hit the stage and kick-started the whole show with the right attitude and message, putting the cause first and foremost and blowing everyone else that day out of the stadium. Their popularity from that day on only ever increased.
Was it because they received criticism for performing in South Africa during the Apartheid era? Later in 1985, Little Steven and other artists sang that they "ain't gonna play Sun City." There was also Freddie's HIV/AIDS diagnosis.
Grew up with Queen. Still remember seeing this when it came out. Top notch video, love the Fritz Lang vibe and foresaw the demise of video and return of radio. Love Queen, got tickets for Queen and Adam Lambert next summer in Glasgow, can’t wait.
Everyone talking about watching Queen at Live Aid is spot on. It's regarded as one of the best live performances in history. You mention how slow this song is but because of the time limit at Live Aid, they actually sped this song up quite a bit. It made it even better, in my opinion.

Thing with Queen and why they had such a variety is that it is all four of them. Once you start learning about them you can tell who wrote the songs. This one is totally Roger Taylor (the drummer), something like Hammer to Fall is totally Brian May, Another one Bites the Dust is Deacon. You can see the different styles in their songs.

It was called "Theater of the Mind", where you created the sets and costumes. It required an actual imagination. This song is about radio going corporate and having playlists that they are chained to. Radio, especially FM, used to be the place where the new music blossomed, and it didn't have to be a "hit' in order to get played. Whole albums were played, including the premier of the entire "Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by The Beatles!
Don't forget Body Language. It's so poignant, Freddy Mercury was to Queen what Bono is to U2, and what The Late Michael Hutchence was to INXS (RIP). Despite the fact that he was the undisputed Star of The Group the guys still stayed together. He also attended the same Art School that Annie Lennox attended as well as John Taylor of Duran Duran. Radio was slowly taken a Backseat to Music Videos. Also American Bandstand was heavily affected by Music Videos and it's impact while Soul Train wasn't because alot of Black Artists weren't played on MTV. Also in this Day & Age The Stars of Today are usually discovered on a TV Talent Show, The Internet or a whim.

Queen was far more than just Freddie Mercury. Their sound and their songs were not just down to him. Three of the four band members sang and all wrote songs for the band. Radio Ga Ga was written by Roger Taylor, the drummer.
Not only did they all write, they all had hits, that is very rare.
That's why they always split the writing credits equally. To my knowledge they are the only huge band that ever did that.

I was at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in Wembley back in 1992 and on my mates shoulders to watch 75 thousand fans clapping in sink during this song, it was a mind blowing experience i will never forget. I still get goose bumps when i think about it.

Here, in the UK, in the 1950s and 1960s, those of us of a certain age would go to bed at night with our little transistor radios and listen to Radio Luxembourg. In the late evenings and through the night, despite all the interference and a signal waving in and out of tune, we'd listen to the latest pop music under the covers. In those days, we didn't have FM so we had to put up with poor reception from a transmitter in the heart of Europe. So we can relate to this and that is why Roger wrote it because he is also of a certain age!

Yes, I did that! Normal radio had documentary and political programs, comedy shows, even soap operas, etc. Pop stations had a set playlist but Radio Caroline and Radio Luxembourg were 'pirate' stations that played everything. Terrible reception tho 😂 Weren't they at sea?

My brother and I did the same here in the USA in the 70s. Pre-early teens we shared a bedroom and there was always talking after the lights were out. But then my brother got a transistor radio and we would turn it on with the volume very low and fall asleep with the sounds of music and the night time DJs. Something special as they always had such a soothing voice back then on tjose night shifts.

One of their more under rated songs which I personally love is "Who wants to live forever". They also did a soundtrack song for "Highlander". One of the most iconic groups in music history!!
That is the song I want played at my funeral. And when you understand the context from the Highlander film, so incredibly moving and impactful. Not that it's bad without seeing the film, but it's so much better with that context. That song is what prompted me to buy my first Queen album and to learn as I continued to buy more of their music until I had all of the albums that they were the artists responsible for most of my favorite childhood songs all along, including Radio Gaga, my favorite when I was 8.

Great reaction guys! In a nutshell, this was really about MTV (and music video in general) competing with radio. MTV launched in 1981, and the first video they played was "Video Killed the Radio Star." Many 60s/70s artists faded away if they couldn't present their music/art in video form, along with having a cool look (hair, makeup, fashion, etc.). Music was King - dance, film, and the fashion industry were deeply tied into it, especially the film industry. Soundtracks would sometimes be more successful than the actual film, and most films had a soundtrack. It was important to have your video on MTV in heavy rotation. In the 80s, there was an issue of whether artists would release their newest music on the radio first or on MTV first.

Amber, you got the meaning exactly right. My mom used to tear up whenever she heard this song because it made her nostalgic for her childhood when the whole family did gather around the radio at night. That was their television, and she was a huge fan of the Little Orphan Annie show (just like Ralphie in A Christmas Story haha). When this song came out, music videos were just getting popular and Roger Taylor was missing the old days where it was the music that mattered most.
Sidenote, when I was younger I always assumed Freddie wrote the lyrics to all the Queen songs. I’ve since learned that it was Roger who wrote all my favorites, and this one is no exception.
As an old dude, I find it hard to comprehend how many young reactors can say, "so and so is one of my favorite artists" and then they have only heard a couple few songs. When I was young if you liked a band, you bought their records and you knew ALL their songs. In fact, most often, your favorite song on an album was not even one that was a hit or a single. These days people discover and consume music completely differently than they did in my generation. We bought albums and listened to every song. These days people only know the songs that are hits, which are the songs that get recommended on Spotify. They just don't get recommended the 6th song on an album, and so they never hear it. Same with youtube reactors getting recommendations in the comments, most people are going to recommend the hits and the singles, not the B-sides, not the 7th or 8th or tenth song on an album. It's a shame really, because a lot of great music is not getting heard.
Oh I agree. I listened to my first album in its entirety with Luca the other day and I totally understand why people say it’s better that way. Also I love to look at songs that are those “number 8’s” on the track. I don’t want to ever do just popular songs. Some of those less popular songs have meanings that hit certain people the right way and are certainly worth listening to. Hopefully we get to dive deeper in these albums as we continue to learn.
@@RobSquadReactions I would say You Take My Breath Away is an incredible side of Freddie you’d both love. But the first three albums are great. They’re the only band where all members wrote #1 songs. Plus, the drummer Roger Taylor (the high voice) and guitarist Brian May also sing leads on some songs. It’s not always Freddie on lead vocals.
I'd add that they're not sticking to one genre like many people do when first getting into music. They've sampled a little of nearly every genre, and I love it.

I think part of it is we just suggest the hot songs because we think they will get it easier. It is up to us to suggest lesser known songs to help them see the depth of some artists. We didn’t have the ability to pick and choose songs when we were kids unless we wanted to just stand next to the turn table all day. So, we played the whole thing. And my favorite song on an album would change from week to week.

Some thoughts based on your commentary: The radio was what TV is today. There was a show back in the 1970s called "The Waltons". The show took place mainly during the Great Depression but in most of the episodes, you'd see the whole clan gathered around their new radio listening to news and shows and what-not. Now we have Alexa playing music in the background while we clean the house or play video games (well, at least I do). Also, the very first song played on MTV when it debuted back in 1980s was by the Buggles called "Video Killed the Radio Star". What I got from that song was, because of videos, an artist couldn't only sound good, now they had to look good, learn how to dance or how to act and how to lip-synch properly. The music industry became so much more than having a popular song and selling a bunch of albums. But this is what change is. I'm 60 now. If I were to live another 60 years, I imagine I'd see a whole bunch of stuff that I couldn't even imagine now. But yes, most (not all!) modern music sucks and is very shallow.

Queen never fails. Something you might find interesting; some of the b&w footage is from a movie called 'Metropolis', which was astounding in its day (1927). Freddie in front of the huge dial, moving the arms is an homage to that movie, as well, as that's one of the scenes. Metropolis was all about privilege and the abuse of the working class, and is one of my favorite movies.
Saw it the movie 🎬 in the early 80s. Like how they incorporated Queens music 🎶 into the movie. Very interesting movie. Liked it

George Lucas took the movie Metropolis as his inspiration for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith, particularly when he set most of it in Coruscant.

I watched Metropolis a long time ago, before this song was released. It was a German film, but with silent movies that had no effect.
I suggest: Innuendo, Who Wants To Live Forever, Somebody To Love. The black and white sequence in this video is based on Fritz Lang's film: "Metropolis" and the deep, roaring synthesizer sound was very new at the time.

There's no doubt Freddie Mercury is in his own league. But what really makes Queen special is the band. All 4 are so versatile and talented they mesh together as one. Crazy I have about 3 of their 8 tracks tapes still to this day.!! RIP Freddie!!!

My husband growing up in Boston, always says his finest Red Sox memories were listening to games on the radio over watching on TV. It was so much more descriptive...So much more colorful. You really had to use your imagination. Often to this day, he will put a baseball game on TV with the sound off and the radio broadcast on...Also, it's the Music, The old school chatter, The DJ's introducing the songs. They were all part of our youth and carry on to this day. Jordan you need to open your mind and become a radio guy!!! ;)

I think you are ready for live aid. Its 20 minutes and considered one of the best performances live ever, if not THE best one. Live aid was a benefits concerts for hunger in Africa and included all the best bands and artists of the time but Queen came on and made the biggest impact. Everyone left in love with Queen and especially Freddie. You will love it. Still many more songs and live performances after live aid but its a great one at this point in your journey. FYI, during Queen's South American tour, they drew 350 k to their chows in Argentina, then 500 k to them in Brazil. Facebook has video of their show in Argentina.
The Live Aid concert version of Hammer To Fall is one of my top favorite Queen songs. Back in the day if you didn’t want to listen to the radio you read the paper or sat around the piano or a phonograph for a sing along. Some families had children (usually girls) that played the piano in the parlor for background. We didn’t miss TV cuz we couldn’t even conceive of it. I didn’t have tv growing up and while I knew people that did I didn’t miss it.
Now go and watch the live version at Wembley, their live aid set is about 30mins long, a must watch.
My love of radio began in 1962.🤪 I got a transistor radio for my 10th birthday!🤭 It came with a single ear plug 'cause everything was mono back then, no stereo.💯 Later on in my life I listened to my car radio with stereo, my record player, my 8 track cassette player, cassette tapes, laser discs, CDs, and finally the Internet!😅 What a long strange trip it's been!🤗Radio....someone still loves you!😁❤✌

In all honesty, you should have an entire playlist of reactions dedicated solely to Queen. Their discography is vast and a pure joy to listen to. Such versatility and eclectic style rarely can be found in other bands. Four men with absolutely amazing talent for their craft. Brian May- a composer of their more hard rock orientated songs, brilliant guitarist and -just a fun fact- a licensed astro-physicist. Roger Taylor- also a composer of many songs- Radio Ga Ga included-, an excellent drummer and the one with the highest vocal pitch. He often did the background vocals in live shows, always helping Freddie. John Deacon- what an amazing bassist. His legendary riffs in Another One Bites The Dust, Under Pressure (to name a few) are recognized at the first note to this day. Also, a talented composer and producer. Freddy Mercury- what else can be said about his genius that haven't been told already? Voice of an angel, virtuoso pianist, composer, front man and entertainer of high caliber. What a joy and experience to see him performing live. He could command a sea of people only by raising his hand. Speaking of live performance, check out their number at Live Aid. Everyone agrees they had the best performance among all the stars invited to perform.

Yes. Just as several have told you in comments. You MUST see Queen at Live Aid '85 in Wembley Stadium. Many critics call it the best live performance by any band ever. Performed right after their two year hiatus. Also, it was right after Freddy was diagnosed with AIDS. Making his performance even more amazing. His command of the huge audience is spectacular. You're missing out.

I was a huge fan of Queen, personally saw them live 3 times, the last 3 feet from the stage! By Live Aid, I was a single mom, my Maria was 6 months. Clearly I could not attend despite being a local Philadelphia native. It was an amazing show! My Maria and my newer babe, Alexa, are huge fans. Teach your children well!

This song was written by Roger Taylor, so you got one from each of the non-Freddies of Queen today, and you got to see how well Freddie is even able to smash songs that are not his own. Thank you for this reaction and this tribute day. We didn't have TV so nearly all of our entertainment and information came to us via radio. Also all of our music came to us from radio and from there we would buy the records. This song is about the hope that radio music will remain and not be replaced by music videos. Music videos tend to tell you what to think, how to interpret the song instead of letting it become whatever you deem it to be. Also it has come to be that losing radio as out major source of music has limited our variety of music, we tend to pick a few groups and kind of stay within their music or just one genre. Radio was going 24/7 so they had to play a bit of everything so as not to bore their audiences so we would hear decades of music every day and learned to appreciate so much more music. Radio was a very educational media and I really do miss it. If you ever get the opportunity just to listen on your own, check out Firesign Theater. They were from the 70s and 80s but they wrote and performed radio shows. Turn off the lights and put on the headphones and let the sound effects and stories take you away. It is like getting lost in a great book only with sound effects and someone acting out the stories. I would recommend their Nick Danger shows, Nick Danger is a private detective (They call him Private Dick) and they are mystery type performances. Don't let your preconceived thoughts block you, you can find Firesign Theater right here on RUclips. Spread your wings and kick back and relax listen to what radio was all about .
One of the reasons Queen is a favorite of mine is because they don't always sound the same. I remember playing a best of Queen while my teenage son was there and he finally said I never realized those songs were all Queen. I hope you listen to Don't Stop me Now. Such a good one.

Their Live Aid 1985 version of this is better in my opinion! It's a faster tempo. This is definitely my favorite of theirs. Love the beginning that mentions "War of the Worlds" and other radio dramatizations. Also love the line that starts " so don't become some background noise". It always resonates with me. R.I.P. Queens live aid performance was second to none. You really have to see it to believe it. Being 13 watching it on tv and it was a wow moment. You wouldnt be disappointed.

Freddie is King, but you have to give props to Brian, John, & Roger too. While most groups have one or two composers & the others provide their musical talent, Queen is one of the few which has garnered numerous chart topping hit songs, written by each member of the band. Everyone is saying to check out their performance at Live Aid 1985 - yes, it's a definite watch... but Queen Live at Wembley 1986 is one that every Queen fan must see, if they haven't already numerous times. Live Aid is only a 20 minute show, but 1986 Live @ Wembley is a full concert. Freddie playing the audience & such during the show is not censored, as the televised Live Aid was.
You should watch the movie Highlander. The soundtrack is by Queen and it's loaded with great music. You could react to Flash's Theme from Flash Gordon by them too. The video has the same feel as this.

When you check out the Live Aid gig, as you must, bear this in mind. In 1985, Queen were on a bit of a downer, had been for a couple of years and had gone out of the limelight. The performers that day were getting criticised for cynical virtue signaling and using a good cause to flog records, in some cases rightly so. Then Freddie (and the guys) hit the stage and kick-started the whole show with the right attitude and message, putting the cause first and foremost and blowing everyone else that day out of the stadium. Their popularity from that day on only ever increased.
Was it because they received criticism for performing in South Africa during the Apartheid era? Later in 1985, Little Steven and other artists sang that they "ain't gonna play Sun City." There was also Freddie's HIV/AIDS diagnosis.
Grew up with Queen. Still remember seeing this when it came out. Top notch video, love the Fritz Lang vibe and foresaw the demise of video and return of radio. Love Queen, got tickets for Queen and Adam Lambert next summer in Glasgow, can’t wait.
Everyone talking about watching Queen at Live Aid is spot on. It's regarded as one of the best live performances in history. You mention how slow this song is but because of the time limit at Live Aid, they actually sped this song up quite a bit. It made it even better, in my opinion.

I am a queen fan for 30 years and I never read on that.. like that all we listen to is'nt always that good and the mike as the stick to the future where music is more computerized.. you added even more value to this comeback song of queen after the 1982 album failure. Thing with Queen and why they had such a variety is that it is all four of them. Once you start learning about them you can tell who wrote the songs.
This one is totally Roger Taylor (the drummer), something like Hammer to Fall is totally Brian May, Another one Bites the Dust is Deacon.

Love you guys, and love everything Amber does with her hair! By the way, you would have loved sitting around the radio. You would have sat there with your mouth hanging open. It was called "Theater of the Mind", where you created the sets and costumes. It required an actual imagination. This song is about radio going corporate and having playlists that they are chained to. Radio, especially FM, used to be the place where the new music blossomed, and it didn't have to be a "hit' in order to get played. Whole albums were played, including the premier of the entire "Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by The Beatles!

Don't forget Body Language. It's so poignant, Freddy Mercury was to Queen what Bono is to U2, and what The Late Michael Hutchence was to INXS (RIP). Despite the fact that he was the undisputed Star of The Group the guys still stayed together. He also attended the same Art School that Annie Lennox attended as well as John Taylor of Duran Duran. Radio was slowly taken a Backseat to Music Videos. Also American Bandstand was heavily affected by Music Videos and it's impact while Soul Train wasn't because alot of Black Artists weren't played on MTV. Also in this Day & Age The Stars of Today are usually discovered on a TV Talent Show, The Internet or a whim.
