  • Would Arm Mounted Crossbows Work In Real Life
Here are my thoughts on arm and wrist mounted crossbows, featuring Mad Max, Berserk, and Assassin's Creed.
    Assassin's Creed Phantom Blade:
The Phantom Blade is a modification to the Hidden Blade which consists of a miniaturized crossbow attached to the gauntlet. Pioneered and utilized by the French Brotherhood of Assassins, the projectile mechanism complements the Hidden Blade by providing the user with the ability to assassinate at range.
    Berserk repeater crossbow:
The Repeater Crossbow (連射式ボウガン, Rensha-shiki bōgan?) is a deadly weapon created by Godot and adjusted by Rickert for Guts.
    Appearance
The repeater crossbow is a hand-cranked crossbow with an open-topped box-feed which is filled with crossbow bolts. As a person cranks the mechanism, the gears puts the bolt and the bow in place before firing.
    Abilities
Easy to mount on Guts' mechanical arm, it shoots a volley of arrows from a large magazine mounted vertically on top of the crossbow by simply turning a crank. The weapon reveals its usefulness when Guts has to face a large number of enemies, especially human soldiers or hordes of monsters.
Rickert perfected the crossbow during the short stay of Guts at Godot's mountain hut shortly before he left for Albion's temple, decreasing its bulk and adding a new magazine with a collapsible bellows.
Guts uses the repeater crossbow extensively until he acquires the Berserker Armor.
A crossbow is a ranged weapon using an elastic launching device consisting of a bow-like assembly called a prod, mounted horizontally on a main frame called a tiller, which is hand-held in a similar fashion to the stock of a long firearm. Crossbows shoot arrow-like projectiles called bolts or quarrels. A person who shoots crossbow is called a crossbowman or an arbalist (after the arbalest, a European crossbow variant used during the 12th century).

Gut`s crossbow is possibly a nescessity because he has a fake hand which preumably has no mobility, thus he only has one hand to operate weapons with. Rickert says that the hand is magnetized so it can grip the dragonslayer, thus it is implied it would not be able to grip it without magnetizm, cause its still medieval times, its not a robot hand after all. And i think his repeating crossbow, and the way he operates it, benefits from being mounted to the forearm. Because this way, when he is using the crank, it can`t move and the cranking is easier.

      @kaihowes6650 Год назад

@loganbrodnax4638 I mean he must have magnets or a locking system in the gauntlet because he can still swing the dragonslayer with his fake hand so he could hold a standard crossbow but it wouldn't have the same speed I wonder if he still has his flame thrower attachment.

I kinda have to disagree here. At least for the berzerk example. Gutz does not have control of the metal arm. The only reason it works is because it uses a magnet so that it closes around the metal hilt of his sword.
So his arm is almost always useless and he cannot really hurt it. So point one of safety doesn't matter.
Point two, is exactly what happens he uses the other arm to spin the thing and make it fire, it's point is to take down multiple weak enemies like humans, use it as sneak attacks or as long range annoying tools. At mid to close range he uses the cannon which is triggered by him opening the hand of his weapon and pulling a compartment on it (so it has two different safety measures) or just the dragon slayer.
And yes the cannon arm hurts him he mentions it nearly pulled his shoulder the first time he used it so not the most practical but he's desperate so he needs it.

he overloaded it with gunpowder on his first firing of the cannon, he tones it down with subsequent use. he never really got a thorough demo with it until it was do or die time and it doesnt seem to harm him much at all after that first time.

I understand what you are saying but when something pops off (and it's usually I feel unexpected) having to take the vital seconds to load the thing could get you or others killed. A sword is no good if you have to sharpen it during an ambush. Extreme example I know but does that make sense? I don't know if I'm being clear.

Yeah or if it's assassin's Creed style the crossbow wouldn't even work cus the arms are folded back and with say a two handed weapon like a long sword you still have the other hand to use the crossbow so you might not be able to shoot while you stab someone but you could easily press the button to fire afterwards

Well I imagine Guts finds it practical enough given he doesn't have a real hand where its mounted, doesn't wave his metal hand prosthesis around a whole lot, and doesn't wear it all the time.
The other one, the assassins creed one I think is also foldable and hides inside a sleeve, because its an assassination tool and walking around with an arbalest isn't very stealthy or practical.
The real issue is getting enough force from the tiny draw weight of a small crossbow you can pull back with one hand, but low penetration and range is better than no ranged attack at all when you need one.

    • @nickbutler9831

I truly forget how the phantom blade was used, but poisons would probably be the main use of it. The bolt doesn't kill on its own, but if there's two people you need taken out. Shoot one with a paralyzing bolt and stab the other seems quite useful

i had an idea drawn out for a type of "forearm fold-out hunting bow", because i already thought a crossbow would be hard to reload and not safe. Basically, the bow would face the body, folding like wings, and it would swing to face the hand, rotating back and forth mounted on the wrist, landing in the palm where it can be gripped and drawn with the other hand. Its hard to describe in words, but if a bow could be strong enough to fire arrows and not break along the hinges, would a foldout wrist bow work?

Suggestion for a future video:a look at the weapons of the titular alien trophy hunters from the Predator/Alien vs Predator franchises.
What of the following explanations of Xenomorph acid resistant predator weapons makes more sense to you?:
    Acid resistant alloys.
The incorporation of Xenomorph trophies in the weapons construction. The logic being that a species with corrosive blood not being immune to its own acid isn't a especially hot survival trait.

Funny you mention Cyberpunk, at least in 2077 there is a hand weapon sorta like that! Albeit not a crossbow, I believe it's either a small gun or missile launcher built into the arm. My guess is that it uses a very similar mechanic as the Mantis Blades for both storage and just...not murdering everyone in the nearby area by accident - that being just the arms essentially close around it when not in use

Why wasn't the phantom blade mentioned once? It's probably the best version of a single hand operated cross bow. The bolt is hidden at all times so there's no risk of stabbing yourself. The arms only unfold, and add tension, when ready to fire so there's no risk of shooting someone on accident. It's not really meant to kill on its own but to apply poisons. It's pretty well hidden and I'm not sure how it actually fires, but it has to be similar to operating the hidden blade so it's truly one handed operation

  • @AvasFangs

In guts' case he uses the repeating crossbow because it lets him take down multiple enemies from a distance. You might notice that he's actually not shockingly accurate with the crossbow, despite being highly proficient with throwing knives. It's not about the efficiency of his entire body, it's about having that be an option at all, which can help him avoid situations that might be too dangerous (or time consuming) for swordplay.
That being said, he DOES just so happens to carry enough weapons on himself to arm a small army, with no shortage of explosives, throwing knives, crossbow bolts, a literal hand canon and all the tools necessary to maintain all that equipment. So he might be trying to think about combat is a different approach than "can I fight with this weapon without using my hands" because, in reality, using his hands is the best way to fight. He needs them for every weapon he fights with, and he proves to always be sufficiently dangerous with each of them.
But he is also a fantasy character who fights with a sword that probably weighs about 80 pounds and with full plate mail that drinks his blood and drives him insane. So reality might not be of interest in berserk, hahaha

I had an idea. What if it had a mechanism that requires you to pull a string using your teeth (like a string tied to an 8-10cm long wood bar, and you use it by pulling it with your mouth and teeth)? I don’t think it would be that useful with crossbows (because of the accuracy, i don’t think you would have more than 15 mts of effective range) but maybe with a mounted cannon and some training (trail and error) it could work as some kind of middle range alt weapon.

in the world of mad max, tbf they seem way more occupied with being metal as fuck then safe, getting your hand impaled is probably their equivalent to a paper cut, plus the chances of coming across someone who wants to kill you seems extremely rare
and for guts, he can already wield his hunk of metal with one hand, so the hand economy thing aint not issue if you have inhuman levels of strength and a primary weapon that can rip several armored men in two with one swipe XD

  • @Miyamoto8Musashi
    @Miyamoto8Musashi Месяц назад

    Not good enough reasons
You can definitely be safe with it, plus the cross bow could be raised and the arrow doesn’t have to be pointed out so far your hand jabs into it, and you can even put a bar over your hand so you can’t raise your hand back if needed
Oh and I didn’t see you point your own forearm at yourself once… plus I highly doubt you’d point your forearm at yourself as your standing up… you’d have to deliberately be trying to point your forearm at yourself to actually aim a forearm mounted crossbow at yourself
Especially if it’s raised possibly even angled upwards where the crossbow shoots high… I don’t really point point my forearm at myself that much😂, especially not something 3 inches if not more above my forearm which makes it even more less likely to be pointed at yourself
Plus even if you do point your forearm at yourself like some crazy maniac you’re going into battle… if there was a time to be a little lax on safety it would be then, and in the army I see many upon many videos in actual combat where you see soldiers all the time being a little bit more lax on safety
So yea trust the safety and design of the weapon… I mean worst case scenario you might accidentally shoot your foot but even that seems not very likely sense the crossbow is gonna be a bit raised on your forearm plus why would your arm be pointed straight down while in combat anyways, I don’t think your really thinking about where your forearm is and how you don’t really point it at your own body much, especially while standing
And the second reason, you could have a button on the side where it just takes a finger to press, you can press a button while holding a sword btw, plus it’s a cross bow that’s always accessible, it’s already drawn and ready to go with just one press of the button
Don’t get offended but your reasons kind of suck man, like alote, I just don’t think you’re actually thinking about it, I know usually safety arguments usually got people just automatically agreeing but nahhh… I don’t point my forearm at my body at all when I’m standing especially not something 3 inches if not more above my forearm, so that safety argument definitely isn’t gonna automatically win this one for me
And your second point really makes no sense, you could shoot it by just pressing a button while holding your sword, or even pull down like you said so the hand it’s in with like a ring or something, you have 2 free hands, that’s not really a point that’s like the whole concept and why it’s cool so I don’t really get it
No it won’t take 2 hands, and it hardly takes 1 if all you gotta do is press button, which you can press a button with a sword in your hand… so I don’t consider that rendering that arm useless… a cross bow you’d have to put the sword down, but not with the forearm cross bow
