I'm fairly certain the 'thing' Angela Basset did was invent the black female superstar with a string of mega hits in the 90's such as What's Love Got To Do With It, Waiting To Exhale, and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Whoopi Goldberg could be argued to have blazed that trail, but she wasn't the beauty, sex, and feminine empowerment symbol to all of America like Angela became. It was sort of a benchmark the industry passed at the time, but it's hard to cram all that into a two second lyric. However, in America her history is very well known, to the point of not needing clarification. At least, it used to be.

My wife of 18 years and I are Gen X'rs. Both of us are "boring" people; all we are trying to do is raise our kids to be good citizens. We also treat our neighbors and work colleagues with respect. We don't have a ton of fancy things, no Instagram shenanigans, and we are trying to be good stewards of our resources. BTW I don't think Gen X will be a change agent in politics; we've largely succumbed to the same things that grabbed the Boomers. Finally, as a dad, I come to RUclips for some laughs, some news and some cultural information about generations younger than mine. I've discovered something very simple: Gen Y and Gen Z overshare; they can't seem to keep their own counsel. That sort of thing helps law enforcement with crimes, but it's not really a positive just about anywhere else in the world. Thanks for the interesting content, and best to all for 2024.

Totally agree. I'm a big over-sharer. I do find that the internet has substituted "real world" connections in this way. It's bizarre to me how I'm perfectly fine "over-sharing" on the internet but wouldn't dream of telling a person in my real life such things. It's something very specific to our generation and I don't know how it's going to play out. Thank you for sharing - pun intended😉 - your thoughts and experience.

I'm a millenial. Gen Z I feel sorry for because the economy is impossible right now. A lot of them I see seem quite normal. Gen X I don't have a very strong opinion on. Economically they still had it easier than my generation. At least they had the option to just move where the jobs were. Nowadays jobs are worthless.
I'm a millenial (born 94) with quite a bit of faith in Gen Z. Though my parents are boomers and I was a latchkey kid, so I have a lot in common with Gen X.

I’m the oldest millennial alive, clocking in at 43. I think that in general younger people will always be called “lazy and entitled”, older people will always be out of touch and yearning for the “way things used to be”. I also believe Gen z or alpha will finally figure out teleportation. No pressure, but please do hurry I’d like it to be available by the time I retire.

I'm a zoomer. I think the way older generations interact with the internet is sort of funny and I enjoy trying to characterize how those interactions differ. I am very curious about how gen z and gen alpha will mature over time (a lot of current stereotypes seem very young people specific rather than generation specific).
I find gen z pretty socially odd, like we all don't quite know what we are doing, but that may be projection on my part.
I love the creativity and individualism of Gen Z. They're bringing cultural niches back and I'm here for it (I'm a millenial, born 94)

A small, meager token of my appreciation for being a host of a RUclips channel I enjoy and looks forward to every video made. As a Gen Z elder, or zoomer as people of the sort have been dubbed, our generation is stuck in limbo with growing up influenced by the ongoing effort to maintain traditional societal values and reforming what makes an self-actualized adult in alignment with the more progressive/liberal values the generation advocates for.

23:43 To add to your points about the geriatric dads, I think there should be more education on the effects of an older man fathering children. There is a lot of emphasis placed on a woman's "shelf life" as far as carrying children. We all know too well that women over a certain age have more issues becoming pregnant or having healthy babies (it's literally a frequently used talking point to note the "decreased" worth of older women). However, I NEVER hear about the effects of geriatric sperm on an infant. I was always told that a man is pretty much invincible in his ability to father children, able to do this until the day he dies--like Father Abraham. But after I began working with children with disabilities, I began to see a trend where a lot of the kids had fathers who were significantly older than the mom (think a 30 year old mother and 50 year old father). Apparently research shows that advanced paternal age can lead to increased likelihood of malformations and mental disorders in offspring. I wish there was increased education on these things, primarily to let men know that their sperm is not immortal and they too have a shelf life when it comes to creating children.

Well there is a lot of evidence to suggest that older men are likely to father children with birth defects,also Trisomy 21(also known as Downs syndrome) occurs in all mammals...so can we stop blaming women for everything?

I'm gen X and I preferred it when we were ignored. 😃 When people only spoke of Boomers, Millennials, gen z, and now alpha. I know this was all in good fun but the separation of generation drives me nuts. Xers born at the beginning have little in common with an Xer like myself born at the tail-end of the specified era. Like everything else, social media amps up the worst/most embarrassing/best of whichever generation (and politics attracts a whole other type of human no matter the year they were born in) which probably does not represent the norm. Boomers are fine and not to be reviled or pitied. Millennials are fine - they seem louder because they were the first to embrace social media as a way of life and everyone had to accept this fact. Gen Z seems fine. Alpha will be fine. It's all good. Happy New Year!🎉
They hate on us Gen X`rs because we are still standing and making big moves uncover, which is why we were able to be under the radar for so long. We knew to keep our mouth shout, millennials cant keep their big mouth shout, hence this video. which is low key coming for us. Most of us also age really well and millennials especially cant stand that.

I’m a millennial. My mother and FIL are boomers. My brother and MIL are Xers. A few of my sibling in laws are Gen Z. And my kids are Alpha. Boomers, I hate to generalize, but all of them seem to have narcissistic traits. Xers think they are tough, but saying you’re tough reduces your toughness in my eyes. Millennials and Zers are too online. We’ve lost perspective for reality. Alpha is an ongoing experiment.
Dear Kid! I appreciate you and all the fantastic work you put into your videos. Would you be interested in focusing even more, this year, on discussing trouble in interhuman connection or lack thereof? The fast expanding loneliness epidemics and how dating apps keep single folks unhappy and single? Edit: gen Z. Am from North-Eastern Europe, so my experiences likely differ from someone from the UK or the US. Interestingly, I'd say for us the cultural age cohort most similar to western baby-boomers are the people that were born in the 70s and 80s, so corresponding to gen X. As in, the generation of "winners", they were born and grew up during the soviet era iron curtain, but came of age around the time that the curtain fell and economic/cultural/speech freedom came.

My generation (X) peaked at Woodstock '99. That's when a Silent Gen and a Boomer got together to hold a music festival on a military airbase (because "Peace, Love, Bombs" ?) They didn't provide nearly enough sanitation or water and when the crowd began dropping like flies in the heat-wave they started selling the water at ten dollars a bottle. When the show was over and Gen X sacked and burned the venue we were told that it was because Gen X couldn't handle "Peace and Love"
The most memeable gen x moment of 2023 for me was when a 44 yo found me through my RUclips channel and tried to hit on me, saying, regarding our 25 year age gap, “I wish there wasn’t such a bug age gap, or that it wasn’t such a deal breaker for you…” dude WHUT

Boomer here. The feck is shotgun? I only know of the literal kind. I love “The Thing”. Only applies to old fucks I guess. Kinda makes me feel special. Hey we grew up on Duck and Cover all our lives and I witnessed the Cuban Missile Crisis. It would have been all over in minutes not decades. Climate change is like the metaphor of a frog in a pot of boiling water, where you slowly turn up the heat and the frog doesn’t know it’s being killed. Hi @KidologyCO ! Love you to bits, you brilliant and courageous soul! I am a Millenial, although I get along really well with Gen Z and relate with Gen Z communication style, especially female Gen Z. I am in a relationship with a Gen X(15 years older.) Interestingly, I have found it hardest to connect with other Millenials. I was raised in a strict religious household and was not exposed to contemporaneous television or media culture as a young child. I find fellow Millenials to be materialistic, self-centred, and a bit nasty - similar to boomers. I like Gen Z and Gen X. I'm from Vancouver Canada!!!

Gen X here. Not happy for us being lumped together with boomers - when did that happen 😀 Thanks for your content this year - I learnt something and was frequently confused by young people stuff😀. The age of the political class is disturbing but young people can be a terrifying combination of certainty and energy - anyone over 50 is just too tired to start a cultural revolution. I wonder if the current crop of younger representatives will gracefully step aside as they get older , or will they continue on Madonna like living their best life?

@@KidologyCO There isn't much to investigate to be honest. It very much ties into the "loneliness epidemic" that this generation faces. However, I do have to add this loneliness epidemic is self-perpetuated by British culture (in our case): nobody wants to "bother" anybody because it's "impolite", everybody seemingly wants to keep every human interaction "fit for purpose" for fear of judgement etc... Granted this is largely coming from my anecdotal experience and observations that I have made living in London for 11 years (I am foreign born), but another video on loneliness from a generational/cultural perspective wouldn't hurt, another excuse to hear your raspy and eloquent voice. 😉
Gen Xer here, I didn't really know my parents, (latchkey kid) and now(as a dad) I find it important to be friends with my kid. To be involved and supportive. It's probably kind of annoying.
I think that the idea that MM, gen A etc. won't have the same issues with marriage when they get to same age is improbable.
Gen X is a weird one. Quite small, cranky they've never seemed all that interested in changing or even running the world.

I'm the oldest Zillennial, so much more on the Millennial side. Besides my own, my favorite generation has to be Gen Z. Our generations have the older/younger sibling dynamic (we're the most similar gens alive but we don't want to admit it). We will be more united once all Gen Zers are in their early 30s/late 20s. Since I'm Southeast European, I'm not fond of Silent Gen and Gen X - their wars and politics have ruined my country. But our Boomers are also different from how the Western media portrays them (they aren't narcissistic nor conservative).
1985 dob. What does that make me? I haven’t kept up with the terminology. When I was young I was labeled Gen X but I think a new classification has been adopted because in 2020 I checked and I was labeled a Millennial. 🤷🏽♂️
