Here’s some more tips for learning a language:
    1. Watch content creators creating media in your target language! This is most useful when you’re at the stage that you understand quite a bit but still struggle with speaking.
    2. Look into the phonology of your target language. Try to repeat the sounds. This can be done even with Wikipedia. And when a sound is too hard, search for tips on how to produce it. Also don’t be discouraged when your vocal production sounds horrendous, sometimes there are no other ways than to just brute force it.

I want to reinforce your points with my own experience from learning English: media in your target language is an incredible source of learning. I learnt most of my early English from watching star wars and the old 1980's Transformers cartoon, as well as playing video games that simply weren't localised for my home language.
Second point: pronunciation guides? Very useful. I've been speaking English with ever-increasing fluency for about fourteen years at this point, and for the first eleven thereof I couldn't pronounce the 'th' sounds, with me saying "free" instead of "three" or "vere" instead of "there".
It took exactly three videos on pronouncing them for me to semi-reliably replicate the sounds, and within three months I'd completely worked it into my muscle memory while speaking.

I feel the "just absorbing the language" part SO hard. I've been to Spain with my bf literally only four times but the amount of words and sentences my brain sucked up in these few weeks is insane to me. And it's the most fun way to learn too. Combine with professional classes + time and I believe I'll be fluent in a few years! Hopefully sooner! I wish you the best in learning more German and I'll definitely hop over to your german channel too :D

Fun fact but you don’t need to go to a country to “absorb the language”, you could create your immersion at home. I’m doing with Japanese and I got to mid intermediate within 2-3 years.

i’m now watching films and consuming German music with ease.

This is basically similar to what I did to learn English. School wasn't that useful for me, because I was one of those people that always forget everything after an exam lol, and the fact that it was so different from my first language (Italian) made me kind of not really care about it. But after discovering that some fandoms that interested me had lots of videos in English, I threw myself on them. And when I discovered Discord, I started to use it too to help myself with the language and find more people to chat with that share my interests. It's funny because it's been just a few months from when I started actually practicing with English, and while I don't consider myself fluent with it, I consider myself good enough to make a conversation.

Every time I mess up talking or writing, I try to remember a quote from Confucius that's commonly translated as "With words it is enough if they get the meaning across." As long as the person you're talking with understands what you're getting at, you're doing it right. Getting the tense or gender of a word wrong is most likely not gonna matter, and it's not like you never make mistakes in your native language either, right?
And I for one would love more german-related content :3c

American, here. I spent an exchange student year in Germany way back in 1985! Vernacular has changed since then. I notice now that informal "du" in conversation seems far more common now than then, and I find myself full of questions about that. Maybe that is different online "gegenüber" in person? I don't know, but we never had internet back then, let alone You Tube, which is my absolute favorite thing about the internet. There are seemingly endless You Tubers available, both to teach nuts and bolts language structure, vocabularly, colloquialisms, dialogue, etc., AND cultural and linguistic trivia to inspire us to want to learn. Thanks for doing your part!

Brit here that is dating a German, it's nice to hear about and get advice from a fellow Brit. I have been trying to learn more German for whenever I visit there as the first time I had (it was my first time leaving the UK ever), I cried a lot because I didn't realise just how isolating it felt not being able to understand anything at all (my partner being a huge help though). I don't want to be useless anymore. I have been learning through Duolingo but my motivation keeps dipping and find it hard to focus (ADHD) but I feel like I need other ways, which lead me here. Thank you for making this video!

You need to be at a certain level to not just end up teaching yourself broken sentences but I think you've more than passed that level. It also makes you constantly warmed up in the language, now it takes me a while to go back to my native language.

Today at work I had a middle-to-late-aged german couple come in. They didn't speak english well so I spoke german with them. I took me a second to get back in it, but after we were able to interact without any issues. I have rarely felt this good before regarding my german.
