    Seeing Mischief Makers after so many years just brought up the most random of childhood memories. My cousin and I rented it for the weekend and we were trying to find all the gold gems. We were in a cave level and couldn't find it anywhere. My cousin randomly grabbed some NPC and shook him, making the gem fall out. But we spent so much time cheering about it that it just disappeared, which we had no idea it could do. We laughed for, like, 5 minutes straight.

    I’ll share a little bit of history I have with Mischief Makers. My dad kind of came home one day with a new N64, as well as a few games. One of those games was Mischief Makers, however, it was a Japanese version of the game. This wasn’t too long into the N64’s lifetime and I was young. Anyway, I ended up playing the game, but being in Japanese, I didn’t understand a single word. I had to figure out all the mechanics by myself, not only that, I even made up my own story and gave every NPC a name. I took my time with the game, and I played levels over and over again, young me was really patient with her games, way more patient than I am nowadays, honestly. I actually didn’t even know the name of the game until I was about 15, and a friend I had at the time lent me his copy of the game to play. So I got to experience the game for the first time in my first language. Not an overly interesting story, but hey.

      I can barely remember playing this back when I was 8, but I remember loving it so much, I even remember drawing the main character in class and the teacher asking me about what I was drawing. I’m having a bit of nostalgia watching and it’s so weird seeing how they actually look vs how I remember these games.

    "Tonic Trouble" was created as a test for the Rayman 2 engine. The original plan was to release it late 2000, after Rayman 2 in 1999, but they released it around the same time instead, hence the lack of polish.
    Also: the popcorn machines in the European release are "Nestlé Crunch" chocolate bar dispensers!

      Otaku Lord8 Because it's Treasure. They're not indie indie......maybe they're not that big either. Oh well.

    • @trevormcdermal
      @trevormcdermal 5 лет назад +5

      Otaku Lord8 I thought about that, Treasure just seemed bigger when they were more active. In an interview with Jeremy Parish, Umihara's developer said they were very few when the Super Famicom game came out, small enough to be considered "indie" before the term existed. Even when the new Umihara came out for 3ds and Vita the team was still small.
      Treasure seemed somewhere in the middle, not Konami big but not indie small either. Unless they disbanded or something, I wish they come back with another game.
      I said "Oh well" because either way I want Marina back in some way too.

    • @Gantann
      @Gantann 5 лет назад +5

      I don't know about the Umihara Kawase team's size, but Treasure has always been teeny-tiny. Sin and Punishment 2 was their largest project ever, and the core team was still only around 20 people. I recall reading Treasure employed only 30 people at most, and their old games were made with incredibly small teams of people taking on multiple roles, like typically two programmers and two designers, and a composer who may or may not also be filling one of those roles, etc. They way they stuck to their guns on doing stuff is crazy-OG indie, no doubt.
      As for what they're doing nowadays, it's a little complicated. Since Treasure was always such a small company, the brand name survives with its president Masato Maegawa. Even after all this time, all it would really take for Treasure to come back is for him to get some of the old crew on a new project, or even new hires. Actually, Maegawa finally commented on what's going on not too long ago, and it's basically that Treasure hasn't put anything out because, while they've gotten offers to develop games, they've all been for mobile or social games and he and the team vehemently refuse to make any of those!
      There are things in motion, though. Their twitter account has become active again, Ikaruga got new ports to PS4 and Switch this year, and Maegawa is teasing some kind of announcement for next year (though he said the same thing about this year before). I eagerly await what happens next.

      Really many gaming videos on RUclips have a wrong game at that place. For example videos that talk about NES bootleg games often makes RUclips think that the video is about one of the Super Mario Bros. games. Or then the game is right but it is just the wrong version - for example some Spelunky HD videos have a picture of the original Spelunky.

    The big reason why tonic trouble exists was to test out the engine that they would use for Rayman 2 The Great Escape. Personally, I enjoy the game just because of the characters alone. I just hated the ending though. Not to spoil anything, but it turns into this whole Save the Planet business with recycling. Something about planet Earth fighting back.
    Like... No, tonic trouble! We saw the main character drop the soda, has nothing to do with Mother Nature turning around on us.

    • @SilverSpade92

      Yes! Absolutely!
      I had the Tonic Trouble beta, which didnt have that element in the ending. You just got the can back and celebrated, and Ed tossed the can to you. When I later saw the retail version you speak of, I was furious!
      As a enviromental vehicle it's so misguided. I mean, the levels for the most part were quite vibrant and fun. As far as anti-pollution message, Rayman 2 did it better.
      TT could have focused more on corruption and anarchy. A drunkard takes over the world. He doesn't care for it, and lets it surcumb to violent gangs (vegetables). He hires goons to enforce his power (helling guards). He hires a scientist to distill more Grogha (the pharmasist) so that he can reap the goods of the earth. The Tonic Trouble website seemed to hint at a vicey element. Like what a city would look like under Groghs rule. I think that would have been a better way to go.

    The thing I loved about the random-used-copy-I-got-of-it-as-a 8-year-old of Mischief Makers is how its world lore was just so in-depth and self-assured, that only IT knew what it was talking about half of the time without being concerned about the viewer's desires for more info.
    Like...it only knew what it was talking about itself, without any knowledge that an outside world observing it existed. There were laws to the games universe that we didn't understand...but the game was indifferent to that and just did its own thing.

My dad had partial custody, so every Friday before picking us up he would go to the video store to rent a game that he thinks that we would like.
