Mario Strikers Charged is easily my favorite of the bunch. I don’t know if a game will ever again capture the feeling of scoring a goal from half field while you’re down 3 players to 1 and a huge cheep-cheep is blowing across the field.
I know people say this a lot but this is actually the fastest I've clicked been hyped af for Mayrio month. This is also a topic I've really been wanting you to cover I've been playing gbc tennis lately on the 3ds and it's so unique and well just fun
By the way, there's a pretty big competitive scene for Mario Superstar Baseball (the GameCube one). They've modded online play into the game and have a whole ladder system. Check out the Dinger City YT channel if you want to know more!
Nothing can ever top the presentation of the GameCube Mario Tennis and Golf titles. Especially the opening cinematics I will hear no arguments saying otherwise
Me at like 10 years old or something saying that Mario Sports Mix was like my 2nd favourite game ever, that game was a banger. I'll probably end up playing it for the next week or so now that I'm reminded.
The fact that Camelot got to introduce Waluigi to the world makes so much sense. Even though I loved it, it also kinda confused me at the time why the intro cutscene to Toadstool Tour focused on him and Wario of all characters.
Mario Hoops 3 on 3 is underrated, the character roster is good and they even made the Final Fantasy characters look like Mario Characters basicaly only White Mage, also once you get down the road the point system that you used is just gonna get bad because the other team is gonna keep stealing your ball and making scores.
As a... Penguins fan, I'm intrigued that it all started with a hockey game. I'm sure it's no NHL 94 but that's just a cool novelty tbh And then they put it in Mario Sports mix to a resounding... "what". So, yes the debate can be put to bed, Sports Mix is a top 10 hockey game on the Wii. Maybe.
I actually love Mario Tennis Open. It had a lot of cool courts, minigames, a decent character roster, and Mii customization. Oh yeah, and that’s another thing, this is one of the few Mario Sports games where you can play as your Mii.
You know there's an entire plot twist, that Daisy could be the final boss in the story mode, of the new strikers game! Which means I expect to see a whole new set of Internet clips of" you didn't see it coming!"
You can't forget Golf on the Game Boy either. It legitimately does star Mario in it unlike the NES one. World Tour and Power Tennis honestly were top tier. The more recent stuff has a decent amount of content but lack side modes and the base games at launch were pretty anemic of content. Post-launch support should be a big game getting even more content, not a small game getting completed. The sports RPG games on the portables were so good, too.
Antdude: "we dont want Sports games with Mario in them, we want Mario games with Sports in them, if that makes any sense." Me: as a matter of fact it does, in fact that may be why it's so successful for Mario to be in other game types, cause they build them to be like a Mario game and not just a regular, uninspired money making ploy. EDIT: oof... guess there was some games like that... i didnt know.
The thing is that it's always been very variable. Like Mario Tennis 64, Golf 64 and Toadstool Tour for example are very much just Mario characters playing the sports instead of a sport with a Mario Spin. Meanwhile we have stuff like Power Tennis, Aces, the Strikers games and so on that put a heavy Mario spin on it.
Can we all agree that it's extremely dumb that none of the characters unique to the multiple RPG subseries like Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario basically never showed up in these even before the alleged seemingly-designed-to-spite-the-RPG-fans branding-mandates that they shoved in? Because that's always been super egregious and bad in my eyes. It's even moreso wrt the Square-Enix developed Mario Sports games because, like... Squeenix's been sitting on the rights to the Mario RPG characters for over a decade! They had two stinking games to do it, it would have been the perfect time to bring them back, and they just didn't! Why?!
On top of that, when Dry Bowser debuted in New Super Mario Bros, he was literally just Bowser with his flesh burned off. And in Mario Party Island Tour, he's apparently a close family friend, according to Bowser. Why should something like death be looked at as a restriction to leave characters out, when this universe rarely makes any actual sense in general, and just does whatever it wants?
I love how they went from only the human girls wearing sport outfits to every human-type character to wear sports outfits. Also, time for a fun fact! During the develoment of Mario Tennis (N64), alongside Waluigi, Camelot wanted it to a created a character name Warupeachie to be Peach's rival. But that got scrapped because Shigeru Miyamoto thought she would look to hideous. EDIT: NOOOOOO!!!! The bots spawned my comment!! EDIT 2: YAAAAYYY!!! The bot is gone!!
As someone who grew up with Mario Tennis Open I agree it is worse than other entries in the series but it wasn’t all bad. The tournament mode was fun and the cpus were very challenging on the higher difficulty’s. The majority of the fun from the gameplay itself comes from blocking your opponents super shots and setting up your own so it did feel like more of a necessary shot every time than an optional gimmick. There were also QR code’s you could scan to get all different color yoshi and metal Mario which was cool, plus the customization and playing as your mii was very enjoyable
I think, in terms of mechanics, Mario Tennis Open is a rather solid game. It is still gimmicky, as it should be, but still feels like you're playing tennis. For that reason I like the way it plays far more than Power Tennis, and it's a shame the personality didn't translate.
Mario Superstar Baseball is one of my favorite GameCube games ever, I have such great memories playing it with my brother. He somehow convinced me that in order to catch the ball you had to avoid the glowing circle to catch it....I figured it out eventually
The ones I played the most were Mario super sloggers and toadstool tour. My favorite was sluggers though, I would still be playing it if my copy still worked
Not lying in the slightest, Mario Sports Mix is one of my favorite games of all time. Mostly because its through the nostalgia goggles of a decade ago, but I still have fun with it today. Honestly, the single player mode in the game is pretty fun to me, especially because Ant didnt mention that you can (literally) go off of the bracket in the single player mode and do a whole lot of side missions instead. Plus the inclusion of Final Fantasy characters and the BOSS that is King Behemoth was always so cool and weird and I loved it. White Mage and Black Mage are OP and its amazing. Also Cactuar having the only stat in the game to go into the red with his speed stat is amazing.
I'll never forget my first experience with Mario Sports Superstars where I was so ready for another Strikers that I got the game, booted up Soccer and immediately tried to tackle the ball carrier. It all went downhill after I saw "FOUL" on my screen.
Mario Tennis Open imo is one of the best Mario Sports games of the wii to 3ds era from what cool stuff they had like unlockable metal mario, galaxy content, a mode where you play through the a whole world of the og SMB game from NES, plus the lauch party, BOY THE LAUNCH PARTY I TELL YA, IT WAS AMAZING HOW THEY DID THE LAUNCH PARTY DURING THE TIME A REAL LIFE TENNIS OPEN WAS HAPPENING. Idc what anyone says this will be my most favorite tennis game ever
Honestly, I loved the handheld Mario Golf/Tennis games. Sure, you could argue they were "Mario in name only" since they mostly starred original characters, but it was great getting to level up your characters, and then sending them off to the console version of the game to play as them in 3D! (with the sad exception of Power Tennis) I really wish that Camelot would make another one, but I guess the mandates on Paper Mario also affected these two... While they might not be the greatest Mario characters, I liked the original characters in Mario Tennis: Power Tour. Sure, the Junior/Senior characters get quickly outclassed, but they do have their fans here and there. Still hoping for Plum, Charlie, Sonny, Maple, and Harry to return one day. Kind of felt like they were made to help expand the Mario roster a little - kind of like how Waluigi was made to be a partner for Wario - yet it's weird that all of them only made one appearance before disappearing forever. (Well, Plum did appear in Mario Golf GBC, but only if you selected Dictionary from the options menu.) You can't tell me it wouldn't be better seeing Plum and her friends in Mario Kart 8 instead of Mario and Peach variants like Pink Gold Peach and Racoon Mario. I also thought you weren't going to talk about Mobile Golf, let alone the recent fan-translation it got! Honestly, I wasn't expecting that game to ever get translated, but it makes me happy to know that it did. (especially after pouring my time into it to rip some of the sprites and graphics from the game)
Another thing about Mobile Golf is that FOREMAN SPIKE was in it for some reason, and it's his best design out of any of his appearances. He's also turned over a new leaf and no longer is a bad guy, which is awesome.
Tennis Aces is truly underrated imo. The gameplay is great and It actually feels like the updates made the game a lot better, unlike some other games that use the drip-feed model.
It's a shame how soulless and sterile they've become, not even talking about GCN vs Switch, even between 3DS and Switch especially comparing victory/losing animations in Mario Golf 3DS and Switch.
Mario Sports Superstars actually had it to where Camelot only did Golf and Tennis, Bandai Namco came back to do baseball and the other two modes, Camelot didn’t do the whole game
To be accurate, it's a Bandai Namco led project that called in Camelot to do the Golf and Tennis modes. It's basically what the Smash team did inbetween games.
one of my favorite things about sport mix's tournament mode is the alt paths you could take to unlock alternate costumes for peach and daisy and alternate yoshi colors, sports mix is my favorite sports game
Dodgeball was the best (and only good) part of Sports Mix. It deserves to be its own game especially If they applied what they’ve done with Strikers Battle League to it.
I actually went into a bit of a rabbit hole with the Hot Shots Golf games recently, and learned some interesting stuff. A.)It is called "Everybody's Golf" in other parts of the world B.) It was picked up by a company called "Clap Hanz" after the first one and the series was still published by Sony since they apparently wanted a golf game on their console that badly C.) This series is almost the only thing that Clap Hanz has ever worked on, with Everybody's Golf 2 being their first game ever D.) This series has seen a bunch of guest characters, including, but not limited to, Jak, Daxter, Ratchet, Clank, Pac Man, Gex, Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza, Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal, and the thing that got me into this rabbit hole to begin with, Kratos from God of War still voiced by the original VA, Terrence Carson. So yeah, the series that Camelot left behind is... an interesting one.
3 on 3 hoops and strikers charge was my favorite sport since I never got the chance to try gamecube and 64. Never got any other sport on the wii or tried any golf game. Some do sound like fun and I like to try them sometimes.
The amount of work u put into your videos is crazy. Thanks for these videos man, I always look forward to them and save them for a time I can give them 100% attention. Love ur stuff man. Can't stress that enough. Well done
I have to say, I've never seen such extensive footage of the Mario Golf and Tennis games on GBA, and as a huge Golden Sun fan, this is...just, very surreal.
The Camelot tennis and sports RPGs were my childhood obsession. The music, climbing up through the ranks, the sprite work; even all the random human characters. I’ve always wanted them to do that again, and I was so disappointed with the switch golf game’s weak attempt at it. I’ve been comforted by titles like Golf Story, though
As someone who doesn't get excited over sports games, I LOVED Mario Strikers. The gameplay, the robots, and the fact that I was able to play as a Daisy that was finally relevant and had a personality...so good!
One of my favorite fun facts is that Soken (Yes FFXIV Soken) composed on both Square Enix Mario sports game. I also don't remember what games was in Soken's discography before Mario Hoops 3 on 3 but its one of his earliest jobs I think.

God....I remember replaying the crap out of Sluggers. Making new configurations of teams, playing on every map. I would LOVE sluggers to return
Nothing can ever top the presentation of the GameCube Mario Tennis and Golf titles. Especially the opening cinematics
I will hear no arguments saying otherwise
Me at like 10 years old or something saying that Mario Sports Mix was like my 2nd favourite game ever, that game was a banger. I'll probably end up playing it for the next week or so now that I'm reminded.
The fact that Camelot got to introduce Waluigi to the world makes so much sense. Even though I loved it, it also kinda confused me at the time why the intro cutscene to Toadstool Tour focused on him and Wario of all characters.
Actually, the intros for Toadstool Tour and Power Tennis focus more on Wario and Waluigi then on Mario and Luigi, which is pretty funny
Super Sluggers is genuinely my favorite game ever. I live in a baseball family so its customary that I love this game.
@today was a good day All the cancer in one nice
Also same I love Sluggers
I have so much nostalgia for Super Sluggers
I love that game
Sports Mix was my childhood, will forever love
Mario Hoops 3 on 3 is underrated, the character roster is good and they even made the Final Fantasy characters look like Mario Characters basicaly only White Mage, also once you get down the road the point system that you used is just gonna get bad because the other team is gonna keep stealing your ball and making scores.
13:01 I never thought I would hear a Golf Story reference from you, but I love it because that game is amazing
As a... Penguins fan, I'm intrigued that it all started with a hockey game. I'm sure it's no NHL 94 but that's just a cool novelty tbh
And then they put it in Mario Sports mix to a resounding... "what".
So, yes the debate can be put to bed, Sports Mix is a top 10 hockey game on the Wii. Maybe.
Mario sports mix was a jam
@@mattieice4785 But was it a SONIC Jam?
@@ExtremeWreck no, but as a matter of fact, it was a space jam.
@@generallyunimportant It was more of a space jam than A New Legacy was. HA!
31:45 I loved this detail in strikers how the characters would get dirty. I hope the detail of characters getting dirty will be in battle league too.
I actually love Mario Tennis Open. It had a lot of cool courts, minigames, a decent character roster, and Mii customization. Oh yeah, and that’s another thing, this is one of the few Mario Sports games where you can play as your Mii.
Mario Tennis Open needs more love.
And had an actual unique idea for a launch party, that being hosting it at AN ACTUAL TENNIS OPEN.
Love me some 3v3 hoops. Such an underrated DS game in my opinion. Just oddly charming
You know there's an entire plot twist, that Daisy could be the final boss in the story mode, of the new strikers game! Which means I expect to see a whole new set of Internet clips of" you didn't see it coming!"
The queen of sports shall rise!
Just like how Luigi got possed with the Golden Tennis racket in Aces? Cool idea
Strikers was always my favorite Mario sports game
Really excited for the new one this summer
Did anyone else notice he said “hair loss starts with keeps” lol
You can't forget Golf on the Game Boy either. It legitimately does star Mario in it unlike the NES one. World Tour and Power Tennis honestly were top tier. The more recent stuff has a decent amount of content but lack side modes and the base games at launch were pretty anemic of content. Post-launch support should be a big game getting even more content, not a small game getting completed.
The sports RPG games on the portables were so good, too.
OK Ant... That joke at 11:42 hurt me more than it needed to...
The fact we all brushed past the fact the horses have their eyes moved to the front of their skulls implying Marioverse horses are predators
Antdude: "we dont want Sports games with Mario in them, we want Mario games with Sports in them, if that makes any sense."
Me: as a matter of fact it does, in fact that may be why it's so successful for Mario to be in other game types, cause they build them to be like a Mario game and not just a regular, uninspired money making ploy.
@@Robbie_Haruna well nothing wrong with either way as long as Mario takes center stage AND there is plenty of content.
Why?!
Because fuck the fans that's why
I just wanna see Fawful again, he's my fave Mario character and just having him get a minor role in any kind of Mario spinoff would make me happy
Isn't he dead though?
@@HypeVoiceActing i mean mario kart's non canon anyway and it's implied that the babies are only there because of time travel, so he could return
"The Wide World of Mario Sports"
Oh, a new Caddicarus video
It's a shame Caddicarus won't do any other type of video besides those.
MARIO SPORTS MIX LET'S GOOOO!!!
I'm so glad this game wasn't forgotten I loved it as a kid
I love how they went from only the human girls wearing sport outfits to every human-type character to wear sports outfits.
Also, time for a fun fact! During the develoment of Mario Tennis (N64), alongside Waluigi, Camelot wanted it to a created a character name Warupeachie to be Peach's rival. But that got scrapped because Shigeru Miyamoto thought she would look to hideous.
EDIT: NOOOOOO!!!! The bots spawned my comment!!
EDIT 2: YAAAAYYY!!! The bot is gone!!
@today was a good day get outta here ya heckin hecker
Daisy IS Warupeache. Mario has Wario, Luigi has Waluigi, and Peach has Daisy
@@LostSoulSilver Not really, Daisy is Peach's friend, not rival
@@mariajimenafigueroa233 Nobody said she was
That’s the way these Princess operate. They pretend to be all friendly and nice, while sharping up their knives for a backstab.
Oh boy can't wait for him to play Gex cleverly disguised as Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
It's funny to hear that the Wii Square Enix game was painfully easy. I remember hoops 3 on 3 on DS being one of the most frustrating games I owned.
I like Mario Sports Mix. Like, the addition of some Final Fantasy characters, four sports you can play, a boss. Yup. Love it.
I actually love that game.
Fun game!!!
I think, in terms of mechanics, Mario Tennis Open is a rather solid game. It is still gimmicky, as it should be, but still feels like you're playing tennis. For that reason I like the way it plays far more than Power Tennis, and it's a shame the personality didn't translate.
Mario Golf: Advance Tour is the best game ever made. I will not elaborate.
I still play mine
Yeah it's definitely a massive downgrade but I don't think that the game wanted to be like Strikers.
I agree!!!
Honestly Mario Baseball is the only reason why I ever got into baseball in the first place and i'm forever grateful for that⚾️💙
It's a shame how soulless and sterile they've become, not even talking about GCN vs Switch, even between 3DS and Switch especially comparing victory/losing animations in Mario Golf 3DS and Switch.
@one of one BEGONE BOT
@@IamaPERSON Nooo!! The bots are invading AntDude!!
@@mariajimenafigueroa233 WE MUST MASS REPORT THEM!
Yeah it sucks to see unfortunately
I hope the soullessness doesn't become the norm going forward
They’re not even that soulless at all. They still have plenty of personality in them.
Good News! Princess Daisy is officially here now, along with Shy Guy to boost.
As a kid I always played 3v3 basketball, the music still hits hard
I love the Super sluggers announcer so much. Just hearing that silly voice makes me chuckle when I hear him go "foul' and "strike".
A.)It is called "Everybody's Golf" in other parts of the world
B.) It was picked up by a company called "Clap Hanz" after the first one and the series was still published by Sony since they apparently wanted a golf game on their console that badly
C.) This series is almost the only thing that Clap Hanz has ever worked on, with Everybody's Golf 2 being their first game ever
D.) This series has seen a bunch of guest characters, including, but not limited to, Jak, Daxter, Ratchet, Clank, Pac Man, Gex, Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza, Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal, and the thing that got me into this rabbit hole to begin with, Kratos from God of War still voiced by the original VA, Terrence Carson.
So yeah, the series that Camelot left behind is... an interesting one.
That strikers battle league segment really didn’t age well
@betafurret1503 Considering everything he said about the Strikers games, i wouldnt be suprised if he actually liked Battle League more then Charged.
@@Aktedya1-jt7vw It wouldn’t be his worst take
mario 3 on 3 was a gem with my introduction of final fantasy
3 on 3 hoops and strikers charge was my favorite sport since I never got the chance to try gamecube and 64. Never got any other sport on the wii or tried any golf game. Some do sound like fun and I like to try them sometimes.
The amount of work u put into your videos is crazy. Thanks for these videos man, I always look forward to them and save them for a time I can give them 100% attention. Love ur stuff man. Can't stress that enough. Well done
Mario power tennis is definitely one of my favorites.
I just have to say, I love that you draw each of the thumbnails for your channel. It adds such an amazing, personal touch to your videos!
29:25 "europians" and all the other countries in the world
Daisy use to say "Whatever" and now she just says "Boo" and I will never forgive Nintendo for this transgression
7:32. SMG4 must really appreciate hearing that from you. 😁
I have to say, I've never seen such extensive footage of the Mario Golf and Tennis games on GBA, and as a huge Golden Sun fan, this is...just, very surreal.
Mario sports mix for the Wii is a super underrated game!
I agree!
"What in the wide world of Mario sports is going on here?!"
As someone who doesn't get excited over sports games, I LOVED Mario Strikers. The gameplay, the robots, and the fact that I was able to play as a Daisy that was finally relevant and had a personality...so good!
i think tennis and golf and soccer are cool but i want more weird sports with a bit of mario flair, give me a mario themed bowling game or something
I hope they consider making Mario Ballet
Mario Tennis for the GBC was my favorite game as a kid I was obsessed with the RPG. Thank you for actually talking about it
Wonder how ant feels about battle league
One of my favorite fun facts is that Soken (Yes FFXIV Soken) composed on both Square Enix Mario sports game. I also don't remember what games was in Soken's discography before Mario Hoops 3 on 3 but its one of his earliest jobs I think.
32:59 welp, he was wrong
funny thing about Mario Superstar Baseball. theres a small competitive scene and the community is SUPER wholesome. a fun little channel called Dinger City, ONLY posts mario superstar baseball content, and has many seasons of content to watch. i HIGHLY recommend.
8:30 - I actually miss these one-off characters and would like them to come back. We keep getting generic specimens these days.
I would much rather Plum over like... Spike.
Those Hoops renditions of the FF heroes are fantastic, I wonder if they got the Strikers team on that
33:12 Well...
