Fun fact: The dev behind Super Smash Land is Dan Fornace, one of the main guys behind Rivals of Aether and Rivals 2. Rivals of Aether also has a whole stage dedicated to Tower of Heaven.
So a couple little notes about the Smash detour. 1. McLeodGaming, the creator of the Smash Flash series, is also working on a new crossover platform fighter called Fraymakers, starring several indie characters. Smash Flash 2 development hasn't been abandoned of course, they just have two projects now. 2. Super Smash Land was made by Dan Fornace, who went on to make Rivals of Aether, where Vaporeon served as a basis for Orcane's moveset. 49:20 Yo, I'm the primary (and as of typing, only?) French translator on _Star Journey_ and we see you eyeing us. We're all super excited to be working on the game and just as excited to show everyone what we've been cookin'!
Just a little fact since you mentioned Mario doesn't have a personality besides being jolly and good natured. I actually met Charles Martinet and asked him about the process of making Mario as a character. I'm going to paraphrase this, but he said he wanted to make someone that everyone could like and vice verse. To make a character that's unprejudice and unbiased. Someone anyone can get along with. Just a good guy. Although I agree Mario doesn't have a personality, the way Charles talked about his mind set made sense to me and it stuck with me ever since. It also explains how Mario can easily play a round of golf with his enimes and have a fun time with them.
Those same people who say “Mario has no character/personality” are the same people who unironically think Link is an actual character with a personality. 💀
Hey, so I'm one of the head devs behind Midas Machine (I did 99% of the graphics and level designs and what not). Glad you enjoyed the demo, I wish we could have finished, but as you said, life sort of got in the way, but it was a fun thing to work on at the time, and I'm taking what I learned from it to make a more original project.
1:16:47 You have no idea how happy I was when you mentioned Luke Tarlowe (A.K.A, ThunderDragon) and his projects. Psycutlery deserves a lot more attention for how fantastic its design, gameplay and world are executed, along with being influenced by the creator's MFGG roots, cosiderably Psycho Waluigi. (Its even the whole reason there wasn't another ThunderDragon game until just earlier! This was being developed for 9 years after the release of Toadette Strikes: TSB2!) 1:24:24 Man, BowserTech was the true start of Mario FanGames Galaxy, and of ThunderDragon himself. I'll admit, for something that was out all the way back 1998, it was REVOLUTIONARY. Mario Quest and MQ2 were the cream of the crop.
1:21:08 What you most likely didn’t know was that Doki Doki Panic started out as a Mario game before becoming a licensed game. And then was reverted back into a Mario game.
I like how some fan games help the creators to improve their game creating and either start creating their own games or just join a company to create games.
hey i worked on mario 85 as a musician, ik it aint in the video but i did the warning screen music also 2 things, we're working on making the game less difficult because right now its kinda hell to play and second thing, just to clarify, mx isnt a demon, he is an ancient spirit created at the beginning of the universes birth, or atleast thats what i think because they may have updated it
Glad to see you were a fan of the Mario Drinks A Glass of Milk trilogy and Super Mario Bros. Dimensions! Wasn't expecting to see any of my games on here, honestly. Cheers
@@granthuebner9716The whole idea for the game came to me when I woke up one morning back in March 2019. I'm serious. Then I spent a week making the game a reality.
The guy behind Super Smash Land, Dan Fornace would end up making his own series inspired by Smash Bros called Rivals of Aether which is an amazing platform fighter with a retro look, and it even has a sequel in development and in beta testing (that you can watch right now) that's called Rivals 2, which is in 3D and has AMAZING animations. That's something you don't see much of in other platform fighters outside of Smash.
Man, what memories did you unearth. Blue Twilight DX was a DEEP cut, but then you brought up Forever, the obligatory Fusion shout-out, and even Super Mario War. Hats off to you.

@@masonasaro2118 Eh, I'd have to wait to see what A3 will bring to the table, but 1.0 and minor subsequent updates fixed most of the issues that 0.9 had and gave more fulfilling areas, imo.

For a little extra background on X2, it's actually a mod built on top of the older fangame Super Mario Bros X. The original SMBX was made by Andrew Spinks, who went on to create Terraria afterwards using experience from working on it. For most of its history before X2 it was only a level and world map editor with the ability to swap sprites, so a lot of the more impressive things being done with it now are relatively recent given how old the engine itself is.
Yes! Fun fact: there was a demo that released three years back, and I ended up playing it out of my enjoyment for ThunderDragon's games. Suffice to say, the full thing is a BLAST.
Your Jelly Mario is broken 😭 It's supposed to be an actually functional game, you can only play it in one or a few browsers for it to work, I think Fire Fox works? PLEASE get back to it once and let me know what you think! It's not very long anyways;)
Hey it's Nimaginendo Games who made these two fan games 46:00 (Super Mario Wonderland and Kiddy Kong's Challenge) thank you very much for sharing the projects in your video, and for even showing my channel.
We knew Luigi was planned for 64 this entire time. It was stated in interviews that Luigi was planned from the beginning. Due to hardware limitations, Luigi's inclusion would have meant drastically scaled back level design. They chose to remove Luigi in favor of more complex levels. The gigaleak gave us Luigi's original model and texture
aside dealing with camera is hell they were planning on adding a mario bros arcade esque minigame where luigi would be controllable but they realized the n64 wouldnt come with a 2nd controller so thus luigi was scrapped
for the record the version of midas machine shown here is actually out of date, there was a new demo released in a "mfgg time capsule" back in 2021. from what i remember there's just a few more levels added though, and it unfortunately doesn't seem like it'll ever be finished
Oh, I'm glad someone else commented this, its a shame most people don’t know about the final version of the game (since it will never be completed) because its still worth playing.
@@ericf.a8623 hello fellow rare midas machine fan. yes i followed the mfgg development thread on the game pretty religiously back when it had regular posts so i'm glad we at least got one more updated version in the end. (it's a massive shame the post a dev made describing all the levels got all its text wiped before it could be posted)
It's worth mentioning that Psycho Waluigi was made after Toad Strikes Back but before Toadette Strikes and that all three games were made by the very founder of MFGG, Thunder Dragon
At 42 years myself, that's something I likely will never experience since I'm older than the NES, so by default any fan game made on that or later systems will never be older than me.
Fun fact: Nintendo did sue over the Great Giana Sisters, and that’s why no new games with them were made for a long time. The IP was purchased by Black Forest Games, the same company that would later make the ill-received Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back. They wanted to use the recognizable IP to help sell their game, which played basically nothing like the original Giana Sisters.
They never sued actually. The developer just took the game off shelves maybe due to fear of a Cease and Desist or a Lawsuit, there was technically a second game made after it is known as "Hard N' Heavy" it uses assets and the same engine from The Great Giana Sisters.
One of my favorite Mario Flash Games is Bullet Bill 2. A game where you play as a Bullet Bill and have to manuever in an endless runner style with your mouse. It's really great.
1:27:45 Wow, finally, I can tell someone this! Luigi's Smash fireballs are actually based on the classic Mario Bros arcade game. There, a red and green fire ball can spawn if you take too long to finish a level. Red fireballs bounce around the screen in a diagonal direction, and green fireballs spawn in a random corridor to slowly float around across the screen before disappearing. With Mario and Luigi, Mario's fireballs are technically based on SMB fireballs, but the way they bounce across the floor is reminiscent of the MB red fireball bouncing around, so they gave Luigi the remaining Green fireball. TL;DR classic Mario Bros Reference
1:01:42 Your browser caused Jelly Mario to work like… that.. other browsers actually perforn better with the game, since theres meant to be collision with Mario and the environment
48:08 *Leo Pointing Meme* thank you for the kind words! Cant tell ya when part 2 will be done (maybe by the end of the decade???) But anytime I see someone enjoying part 1 it encourages me even more.
Actually the very first fan game was technically commander keen by id software in 1990. The guys at id just wanted to port Mario 3 onto the pc and decided to use the bones from that to make the first commander keen
1:23:57 That is the Doom 1 Pinky sprite, but Yoshi. And at 1:27:08, that's the BFG9000 effects. I guess "Doom" and "fan games" will always go hand in hand.
I’m hyped for the future of these fangames I feel like rainbow stars is the greatest Mario fan game and has SO MUCH potential !!! (Also this is probably the first person I’ve seen in a while to actually attempt to look at Mario 85 with a slightly positive view . Thank you Mr.Ant)
I’ve been definitely waiting for this one! Also I would sell my soul to combine Super Mario Bros Crossover and Mushroom Kingdom Fusion with Newer DS, Wii or Super Mario Bros 3Mix. Also regardless of whether or not you feature Undertoad Mission Luigi, I still recommend checking out Undertoad. It’s a fun webcomic, especially when it gets to the Snowdin equivalent. Has a great soundtrack as well! Like one of the tracks, Chimp Chase, mashes up Cranky Kong’s theme with Super Mario World’s Athletic and it goes hard.
And here I thought this were one of those video compilations that's all the rage these days. Leave it to Antdude to drop one and a half hour of brand new fangame goodness out of nowhere!

there is this one demo called Epic Paper Mario that is a sequel that combines TTYD with super paper mario its a 2d platformer with actual turn based battles, it also has partners check it out!

Yeah! Finally, another fangame video, been some time since we had one of those, love them since I get to know good ones that I didn’t know, and can try
Fun fact the creator of Mario: The Music Box started off on Flipnote. I think he mentioned her new name but it used to be something like MarioFan09 for the longest time.
I was there during the creation of Celeste Mario, it was such a fun time to see the new gimmicks being added to such an old engine. Also I do strongly recommend checking out A Plumber for All Seasons in depth, probably the most polished SMW hack ever made and I believe it deserves to be counted as a new Mario entry on SNES.
I had a mini Nintendo Direct hype moment when you showed All-Star Attack's logo on the screen. Thank you for talking about it, it's really underuppreciated.
One thing I’m genuinely surprised about is that nobody has hacked SM64 to add the DS content to it (especially when seemingly way more complicated hacks have popped up)
Fun fact: The Luigi model in SM64 was discovered exactly *24* years and *01* months after the original game released.
That day in 4chan was amazing, will never forget it
The prophecy told not of the year he would be discovered, but instead how long it would take to discover him

@Rediscool9 like the vid but God do I hate that Mario has no personality take
@@Stoplookingathatistolethis Same here, I personally hated that Mario movie take he had

Thanks for covering our little hack, though briefly. :]
Your game looks awesome!!
I'll support you guys until the end :)
So glad you shouted out Psycutlery and Aurascope they deserve all the love
Hey, so I'm one of the head devs behind Midas Machine (I did 99% of the graphics and level designs and what not). Glad you enjoyed the demo, I wish we could have finished, but as you said, life sort of got in the way, but it was a fun thing to work on at the time, and I'm taking what I learned from it to make a more original project.
Artist for Boll Deluxe here, was very surprising to see it mentioned but I really appreciate it!
Mario 85?! I never thought I'd see Antdude cover this lol
And a slight mention to mario madness too. That's insane.
I just like that he did Mario fangames, I ain't to big on Mario's madness lol
Surprised he didn't cover Toolate.exe as well. Would make for a nice Halloween special.
they made an 85th mario game!!!
@Feeeshmannnnnn what happened to mario 84?
1:16:47 You have no idea how happy I was when you mentioned Luke Tarlowe (A.K.A, ThunderDragon) and his projects. Psycutlery deserves a lot more attention for how fantastic its design, gameplay and world are executed, along with being influenced by the creator's MFGG roots, cosiderably Psycho Waluigi. (Its even the whole reason there wasn't another ThunderDragon game until just earlier! This was being developed for 9 years after the release of Toadette Strikes: TSB2!)
1:24:24 Man, BowserTech was the true start of Mario FanGames Galaxy, and of ThunderDragon himself. I'll admit, for something that was out all the way back 1998, it was REVOLUTIONARY. Mario Quest and MQ2 were the cream of the crop.
1:21:08
What you most likely didn’t know was that Doki Doki Panic started out as a Mario game before becoming a licensed game. And then was reverted back into a Mario game.
I like how some fan games help the creators to improve their game creating and either start creating their own games or just join a company to create games.

i worked on mario 85 as a musician, ik it aint in the video but i did the warning screen music
also 2 things, we're working on making the game less difficult because right now its kinda hell to play
and second thing, just to clarify, mx isnt a demon, he is an ancient spirit created at the beginning of the universes birth, or atleast thats what i think because they may have updated it
Glad to see you were a fan of the Mario Drinks A Glass of Milk trilogy and Super Mario Bros. Dimensions! Wasn't expecting to see any of my games on here, honestly. Cheers

1:01:32 Aww. you should have changed regions to "us"! There's like at least 50+ people playing every day!!
Welp. at least you *saw* my game. oof.
It's also incredibly insulting that he thought it was a flash game xd
Love the game btw! Looking forward to that big update!

11:30 I'd totally watch you cover B3313 in full. Especially considering you seem to be playing a much older version and the full 1.0 experience (which is more than double the content you played) is much crazier.
i’d argue that the unabandoned fork is the superior version. and i have absolutely no *shame* in saying that.
@@masonasaro2118 Eh, I'd have to wait to see what A3 will bring to the table, but 1.0 and minor subsequent updates fixed most of the issues that 0.9 had and gave more fulfilling areas, imo.

I was not expecting to see "AntDude learns about the Vaporeon Copypasta" in a mario fangames video.
"Psycho Waluigi"
Yeah, that was a fun one!
"...the guy made a new game for free."
Wait, what? Okay, gotta look up this "Psycutlery" now!
"Mama mia, here we go again" was lowkey a fantastic triple entendre (quadruple if you count Mario iconically saying "here we go!" in 64)
“Brother. I love Mario.”

The gigaleak gave us Luigi's original model and texture
aside dealing with camera is hell
they were planning on adding a mario bros arcade esque minigame where luigi would be controllable
but they realized the n64 wouldnt come with a 2nd controller so thus luigi was scrapped
for the record the version of midas machine shown here is actually out of date, there was a new demo released in a "mfgg time capsule" back in 2021. from what i remember there's just a few more levels added though, and it unfortunately doesn't seem like it'll ever be finished
It's worth mentioning that Psycho Waluigi was made after Toad Strikes Back but before Toadette Strikes and that all three games were made by the very founder of MFGG, Thunder Dragon
a lot of times people say "this is probably older than you all watching this"
for the first time, this is true for me
...by a few months
At 42 years myself, that's something I likely will never experience since I'm older than the NES, so by default any fan game made on that or later systems will never be older than me.
Fun fact:
Nintendo did sue over the Great Giana Sisters, and that’s why no new games with them were made for a long time.
1:12:57 it’s a reference to how the red and green fireballs work in the Mario bros. Arcade game
I would NEVER expect MX to be in a antdude video
One of my favorite Mario Flash Games is Bullet Bill 2. A game where you play as a Bullet Bill and have to manuever in an endless runner style with your mouse. It's really great.
1:27:45
Wow, finally, I can tell someone this!

Actually the very first fan game was technically commander keen by id software in 1990. The guys at id just wanted to port Mario 3 onto the pc and decided to use the bones from that to make the first commander keen
That DOS Mario game is not a bootleg , it’s a fan game made as a test for a game engine that creator used in his own games
There is a great video about it , but it’s in Polish only sadly
1:23:57 That is the Doom 1 Pinky sprite, but Yoshi. And at 1:27:08, that's the BFG9000 effects. I guess "Doom" and "fan games" will always go hand in hand.
I can already tell how many people will be surprised when MX is in a Antdude Video/Thumbnail
I’m hyped for the future of these fangames
I feel like rainbow stars is the greatest Mario fan game and has SO MUCH potential !!!

Eah, what’s going on hubster?
Hello Hubster.
The Luigi fireball is supposed to reference the original mario bros game where red fireballs ricochet while green ones go across the screen
