I thought you meant since the first room hacks video (idk why my brain registered it that way) and I was like "pretty sure it's been 6 years, and I discovered antdude when he made the 2nd one, which means I've been following him for 5 years, right?". Turns out the original was 7 years ago, and I've been following him for 6 years. Yeah it did blow my mind a bit, but then knowing I read your comment wrong and that it's been 5 whole years since the from hacks 3 and knuckles episodes blows my mind even more. Like yeah I saw previous episodes when they came out, but that one, I was subscribed with notifs on at the time. So it was brand new from an hour or two when I saw it. So it always registered as "one of the recent episodes".

A quick thing to add regarding the music. Music modding is the easiest thing in the world on Sonic 3 AIR. I replaced the themes for Ice Cap and Lava Reef with the themes for Diamond Dust and Volcano Valley from 3D Blast, and swapped out the miniboss and mainboss themes for the first and second boss themes from 3D Blast, respectively. It all fits fantastically, especially during the setpiece at the end of Lava Reef Act 2 with the lava fall and the Death Egg in background with the 3D Blast second boss theme playing. I read a tutorial for music modding and, while it requires a basic understanding of Audacity, got a perfectly working music mod the same day.
I looked up those OST's and damn they fit even better than the originals.

@@finadoggie They existing themes for the levels in question are fine, but I prefer the ones I swapped in. I prefer 3D's boss themes to 3&K's as well. The only Jackson track I'd really miss is the Sonic 3 standalone credits. One of these days I oughta upload the mod to gamebanana.
Yeah it's pretty easy I modded the music on my phone using exagear(windows emulator) to run audacity.
I heard you can get these mods to run on a modded 3ds. Which by the way, is surprisingly easy to do

4:38 It is so nice to see people actually acknowledging Forever, Restored, and Absolute's existence. I feel as if people weren't and still don't give Team Forever and PimpUigi and their amazing stuff the attention they deserve and are always talking about the mobile ports or the decomps being the definitive versions of Sonic 1, 2, and CD and either don't talk about Forever, Absolute, and Restored or don't even know they exist. (Also, I don't know if you realize. But you're using an outdated version of Forever, and the newest update Isn't compatible with The Expansion Pack)

I know there’s a lot of people saying Sonic Origins has the inferior versions of Sonic games, but if you’re like me and never played those games before, it is really cool experiencing it for the first time on a modern console.

Hold up! You actually can play as Shadow with a gun. Going into the sound test, putting in certain songs will activate certain cheats. One gives Shadow Chaos Spear, another reskins Chaos Spear to be a GUN. There's even a third that gives Shadow his potty mouth from his game.
So yes, it is possible to weild a gun in Sonic 1.
I'd say that being able to play through Sonic 1 despite making the quality so jank is a sign of accomplishment, rather than...whatever emotions you were feeling at the time

This series has always been special to me. The first sonic rom hacks video was the first Antdude video I ever saw, and I've seen every video since
Weird timing for AntDude to mention Sonic 1/2/CD decompilation projects and how it allowed the hacking community to port these games over to other consoles... Sonic Mania just got the same treatment fairly recently and was successfully ported over to multiple consoles too including the Wii U, PS Vita, and even the New 3DS.

I can't get over the fact that a sonic CD might be an amazing way to create a knuckles game. Still fast and speedy but can slow down to explos that'd be perfect!
The Pokemon designs for Badniks are quite fascinating; back in the day, I used to imagine different kinds of battle droids/robots based on various Pokemon.
It's been a while since I've played AIR, but by golly. It's fun running mods on that. My favorite mods by far are the ones that alters Knuckles's Mecha Sonic boss to say "I'll crush you" during the initial master emerald buff and changing the doomsday boss to the version Alvin Earthworm used in Super Mario Bros Z.
I've been here since the first rom hacks video and can't believe it's been 5 years since the last one. Great to see this channel grow!

When Antdude opens a video with the main theme of Pana Der Hejhog, you know you're in for a great watch.
Fun Fact: Sonic 2 was originally gonna be the one with time travel however at the time they felt that it was too ambitious after only one game to implement this. Hill Top Zone is actually a past version of Emerald Hill Zone hence why they look like they are simply color swapped versions of each other.

I really appreciate you giving details about cool hacks like these, like the hell adventure one. It opens my eyes to so many new games to try out for myself.
I just rewatched those ROM Hacks videos last week, what a coincidence! Speaking of ROM Hacks, a few months ago there was a Paper Mario 64 hacking contest, saw them through another youtuber, and I feel they deserve a mention, since one of them managed to make an Overcooked-style mod that runs in the original console. It's the Peach cake baking intermission with replayability.
shadow in sonic 1 actually does have a gun, you just have to play a certain sound in the sound test

Great video! The Sonic hacking and modding community is always amazing! I find it nearly impossible to go back to the Genesis originals now. The level of customization for these classics is just mind-boggling! I look forward to seeing what they come up with next!
I'd love to see them remake some of the old 8-bit Sonic Master System/Game Gear games like they did with Triple Trouble 16-Bit. The Master System and Game Gear games haven't aged the best, so it would be fun to have a better way to play them!

First you'd actually have to find a Sonic 3DS game worth modding, so pretty difficult.
The Sonic 1, 2, and CD were ported to 3DS with the decomp. Surprised he didn’t cover it.

What I like to do with Sonic 3 AIR is get a bunch of mods to get back the prototype color schemes, backgrounds and level order for the zones, swapping over to Sonic 2 sprites and enabling the drop dash to get a "Sonic 3 Director's Cut" if that makes sense
So glad that you mentioned Bridge Zone's music in this video. It's one of my favorite tracks in any video game and it mildly upsets me that it doesn't get mentioned more.

I like to see Ant cover some Sonic fan games next in the near future. Sonic Smackdown, the Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit remake, and Sonic and the Fallen Star to name a few that caught my eye recently.
