Fun story, but also incredibly sad. My wife and I attended the funeral of a child a few years ago. He died from a freak accident that was exasperated by life long medical issues. It was a rough one to attend... Seeing that white door in Peach's castle and wondering what was behind it, thinking it must be something like Peach or Toad as a a secret fifth character, working my ass off to unlock it, and getting a single Star as a reward is probably the most betrayed I've ever felt by a video game.
"Waluigi MUST be in there, maybe I can open the door after i enter the secret entrance outside the castle shown in the save file screen!!!", as someone who grew up with both 64 and 64DS, I thought Luigi was in 64 and Waluigi in 64DS, and that entrance in the save file screen did not help at all for DS

The method to unlock Wario was one of the most brilliant concepts I ever played through as a child. Truly outside-the-box. The devs who came up with that are geniuses
It took me SO LONG to unlock Wario originally, because while I knew there was a Wario painting on the other side of the mirror, I had no clue it was actually *the* Wario painting. I also had no idea how to get there, because it also took me way too long to figure out how to get Luigi. I even thought the Luigi painting in the mirror room was *the* Luigi painting, but was sadly proven wrong. The reason for that was that *that piano* scared me out of the Boo House level for a long ass time, and thus I always avoided getting even the first star there. It was only after I finally faced that fear and got that first star that I discovered green caps in the Boo level, and finally made it to the 3rd floor only to discover the *actual* Luigi painting was *in the Boo Level itself!*

i can't believe you didn't touch on the taboo surrounding Waluigi in SM64 DS; there was a solid year where EVERYONE believed the Yoshi door would transform into a purple door game once you got all 150 stars, thus making Waluigi a playable character
Render96 did the playable characters PERFECTLY. Luigi still has all of his abilities (though his backflip doesn't go as high anymore), the downside is he's a little slippery. Wario has a couple of his jumps worse like his triple jump, but he can do the shoulder bash to make him the fastest, and he can take more coins from goombas, so he's great for 100 coin challenges. Both have their reasonable strengths and weaknesses to the point that you can reasonably choose any character and it's a viable method, while also not making any of them too broken.
Better yet they shouldve waited for the 3ds. If they did a super mario 3d land type title for it instead that would've suited the console far far better
9:30 No joke I beat the game for the first time at my grandmother's funeral, also I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought the method to unlock Luigi was cryptic as hell as a kid
As a kid who grew up with a DS and still has never gotten to play an N64, this game was incredible, a core part of my childhood and I probably spent more time playing Luigi poker than the game and am now a crippling gambling addict because of it.
If anyone is wondering btw there's a mod that fixes 17:46 for not only this game but also games like Metroid Prime and CoD. Even let's you use the n3DS's circle nub for camera controls.
The cool thing about the power flower is that you can have the ability to get different types of caps in places where you couldn't have them before. For example, in Lethal Lava Land, there no vanish cap, but if you bring Luigi, you can get a vanish cap and have the ability to use it to skip a portion of the level to get to this star past a fence. It's cool and rewards outside of the box thinking. One of my favorite examples of this is in Tall Tall Mountain, where there was a wing cap at the top, now you can get a vanish cap and use it to get past the fence that was blocking you grom skipping the secret slide in that level!
36:26 while its mostly a gimmick, It can still be very useful! Like on the saving mario stage you can get the red coin locked in a black box before wario using the super mushroom.
When you said you played SM64 DS at a funeral i said "So the DS stands for deepest sympathies then" Scott be out there really discovering the secret world of Nintendo fr

It’s actually hilarious you make this video. I learned very recently how to play Super Mario 64 DS on my 3DS with a circle pad cheat that gives the game true analog controls! I seriously love it. SM64DS is actually a good game.
I had so much fun playing those little mini games they added, especially the one where you flick shells and bounce them off of other shells to gain points.
I played Mario 64 DS as a kid and I had a great time with it, so fun. I played it again 1-2 years ago and I definitely had some trouble with the controls. One thing is for sure though, different character choices, more stars, more secrets, and minigames all on a handheld in 2004 is mind blowing and crazy. I still cherish this game today.
We used to play the heck out of this multiplayer in middle school. Wario was for sure the goat with his grab and kick. That Luigi backflip was also something special, and I thought it was cool that all the characters had a unique special block item. Single card DS download play with four players? Yes please. Through the mini games in as the sprinklers on top and it's hard to ask for more outside of analog IMHO.
38:03 I love that your top two games are also my top two games. Yes sort and explode is the best and I love that slingshot game when you destroy the parachuting bombs the second most

@@AceJackWagon885 oof.....that did it
Tell them that Super Mario 64 DS turns 20 years old this year. 😉
@@rookiebanks2693 that's even crazier honestly 😭
Fun fact, a hacked 3DS can be used to convert DS touch screen controls in games to the circle pad, giving games like Mario 64 DS and Metroid Prime Hunters proper circle pad controls
you can also make the game widescreen so it looks better a bit on the 3DS
So would it kind of work like how Kid Icarus does?
Metroid Prime works great as is though, it's practically replicating keyboard and mouse aiming. Why would you move aiming to the circle pad?
@@Professor_Utonium_ some people just don't like using touch controls, even if it is technically superior
This is how I played SM64DS for the first time.
Sunk so much time into this game. I remember using the petal plucking mini game to help me with my love life.
It didn’t work. I’m still single.
ugh you’re so real for this faded
And it will stay that way you forever virgin
@@endlessvisionslolI know bro im totally not going insane or anything
Middle school me hinged my entire love life on that game.
sadly anyone who hinges love life off of a mini game isnt sane enough for a love life yet
39:08 Nah, the post-slide fightclub was *the shit* back in the day. Just pure uncontrolled chaos.
Seeing you carry that tv in the beginning brought back memories. No joke i would lug one that same size to and from my buddies house every single weekend throughout the original xbox and 360 days. We'd have 4 of those set up in his room. Have to carry it up a flight of stairs everytime. Any day now my back will remind me again.

(Just kidding, obviously)
Brings back fond memories for me, too.
The callback to the "but what does Scott think?" in the history book was great
But what does Scott think of the callback
Scott's talking about something portable, you know the rules. Take a drink every time he says "On the go".
I like my liver thank you
0:13
Scott's legs looked like they were just BEGGING for him to give that thing up.
Look how big the TV is compared to his tiny skinny legs
I blame it on the skinny jeans. 😢
"Let's bring back a Super Mario 64, but make it 'better'"
"I know, let's bring in features from Donkey Kong 64 that pissed people off!"
"Perfect"
i can't believe you didn't touch on the taboo surrounding Waluigi in SM64 DS; there was a solid year where EVERYONE believed the Yoshi door would transform into a purple door game once you got all 150 stars, thus making Waluigi a playable character
Man, it's so freaking weird how the Nintendo community both loves and despises Waluigi AT THE SAME TIME
Honestly people hardly recognize how much of a miracle it was that Wario was ever a playable character in a mainline platforming Mario game
Just unplugged my grandpa’s life support to charge my phone and watch some Scott the Woz, RIP to a real one but he’d understand
Let him watch Scott as the light fades
I'm so tired I stared at this comment for 10 seconds and thought you were being serious.
On the bright side you can now play Mario 64 DS at his funeral.
25:51 Idk why the "Solve for X" joke followed by audible frustration worked so well here lol😂
Scott is the only RUclipsr to destroy a whole ass CRT for a literal 1 second gag
I'm hoping it was already broken since the footage at the start of the screen was fake and CRTs are very desired for retro gaming
@@diegoproductions7926 It was already broken and even if it wasn't, there was no way that thing was gonna break from just a two-foot fall.

@@smallwaveseven if the glass was fine all it takes is one flimsy ass piece of brittle plastic to snap and it's lights out forever
the biggest flaw of this version is that it wasn't re-released once again on 3DS with analog support and some nice online multiplayer options
The analog stick on the 3DS doesn’t work for it? I remember playing it on my 2DS and it worked pretty well.
@@kateardoin1296It works but acts as if the stick is a d-pad. So you don't have all the angles (you can mod it though)
They should've just put analog support in the files for later anyways
Better yet they shouldve waited for the 3ds. If they did a super mario 3d land type title for it instead that would've suited the console far far better
@@kateardoin1296 it does work, but not in the real analog way :P
Nobody's gonna talk about how scott single-handedly carried that big ass CRT TV and smashed it as a joke
Actually, he used 2 hands. 🤓

This is peak Scott, I love it, incredible content. Never change, thank you.
9:30 No joke I beat the game for the first time at my grandmother's funeral, also I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought the method to unlock Luigi was cryptic as hell as a kid

I’m a big fan of the handdrawn “Scott as a kid” sketches 😂
I love Scott so much especially when he goes “hey all Scott here!” Has me like oh my goodness he said “Hey all Scott here!”
Why yes Scott, I will watch a 42 minute video essay about Super Mario 64 DS on Memorial Day.
No questions asked.
Oh hey it's you!
It’s a review. Not a video essay.
10:14 I love that you can hear a sound effect for the stabbing
As a kid who grew up with a DS and still has never gotten to play an N64, this game was incredible, a core part of my childhood and I probably spent more time playing Luigi poker than the game and am now a crippling gambling addict because of it.
Bro broke a beautiful crt just for a 10 seconds joke, Scott type of shit 😭😭😭
Probably already broken tbh Scott is a collector first and foremost lol
Beautiful?! Opinions have really changed on CRTs - I remember when people used to hate them for being bulky and filled with lead lol

If anyone is wondering btw there's a mod that fixes 17:46 for not only this game but also games like Metroid Prime and CoD. Even let's you use the n3DS's circle nub for camera controls.

33:30 When you fall for the “Look up Sonic inflation” advice.
As a Sonic fan, I recommend you to look up "Sonic Vore" for more information 😊
I remember when I was a kid, there were a bunch of theories about Waluigi secretly being in the game
a rumour isn't a theory lol
When you said you played SM64 DS at a funeral i said "So the DS stands for deepest sympathies then"
Scott be out there really discovering the secret world of Nintendo fr
This is one of those topics where you think "Wait, Scott didn't already talk about this?"
Also, as a CRT enjoyer, seeing you smash one at 0:16 hurts my soul lol, though the gag was hilarious and I'm guessing that one was already broken since the footage it was playing seems edited in.

It’s actually hilarious you make this video. I learned very recently how to play Super Mario 64 DS on my 3DS with a circle pad cheat that gives the game true analog controls!
I seriously love it. SM64DS is actually a good game.
Super Mario 64DS, alternatively known as "Luigi Backflip simulator"
(Also my childhood-)
Didn't know I needed Scott saying "Biggot" 24:07
38:00 notice how Scott's favorite minigame is the one with segregation.
I had so much fun playing those little mini games they added, especially the one where you flick shells and bounce them off of other shells to gain points.
Glad this port exist for finally making L is real canon.
How much Scott mentions his cousins, his grandma, and their games and consoles is kinda sweet
I really love when Scott does single game reviews like this
Yeah I’m
Havnt seen Scott cover just one particular game in a while, I always enjoy these types of episodes
Scott the Woz videos are so comforting for me. I’ve been watching since 2018 and I have no regrets.

38:03 I love that your top two games are also my top two games. Yes sort and explode is the best and I love that slingshot game when you destroy the parachuting bombs the second most
Mario 64 DS was the first game I ever played in my life, and I still have that very cartridge. I’m forever thankful for it existing.
"I didn't even know the DS was a thing in 2004" I thought I was the only one. I don't recall being aware of the DS until the DS Lite came out
Not even a minute in and he's already smashing his CRT. This is gonna be a masterpiece, undoubtedly
36:41 “28 RABBITS! You didn’t want to give a chance of 100% the game, did you?”
