THANK YOU! I've been shooting for a long time and this was one of the best lessons ever. I finally stopped torqueing the bow, and my groups have improved dramatically. I've only been practicing this for 3 days. You are an amazing teacher. Thank you for sharing this.
I switched to the MFJJ grip method of low wrist and no fingers gripping the riser. It was scary at first but my groups have tremendously tightened. Thanks MFJJ...keep the Wisdom coming!!
Here I was this entire time thinking I was gripping my bow properly for some reason. Thank you for explaining and showing this the way you did, you made it super simple to understand, now time to hit the range and get this fixed.
This is why I love the Ultraview grip. It adds 5 degrees on the bottom of the grip so that way I can shoot a little more high wristed while still gripping properly
Wow! I found a REAL solution to my problem! I’m doing exactly what he was doing in this video. I wish I could send arrows down range every day, but I’m a long haul trucker. When I am home, I do shoot as much as I can. Usually about an hr or so. I do 3 arrows at 20 sets. I don’t want to burn out, but get the reps in and be consistent. Ax a new shooter, I feel that’s the best for me right now. MFJJ, you ROCK, my man! Thanks, bro! 👍🏻👍🏻
That is, without doubt, the best explanation and remedial walk through of archery grip I have ever seen. I'd been target pistol shooting for years before I picked up a bow, and high end target pistols have amazingly chunky, sculptured, multiply adjustable or custom carved grips, such that there really is only one way to hold it. It's highly repeatable. I struggled with archery because to me, the grips were absolute shite, until I learned this lesson; they're not grips and you're not meant to grip it.
In my opinion this is the BEST grip video I’ve ever seen on RUclips. This video made an immediate impact on my paper tuning issues. Simple and very easy to put into practice. Thanks Elkshape and MFJJ! I’ve recommended this video to many others.
Great video! Great lesson! I’ve been working on this. It was actually videos I took of myself shooting the lead me to notice I was clinching my bow at release, and I have a sling. So I started shooting open handed, it helped a lot. Then I saw comments about that being wrong, I think because I was extending my fingers which puts tension in your hand so I went back to putting my fingers on the riser very gently. After watching you demonstrate your grip it clicked on how to shoot with an open hand while having it relaxed. I really need to start practicing with a blank bail and eyes closed so I can just feel the shot. Thank you Josh!
Ok, I hold a bow the same as this young man does, and JJ explains the torque changes with that high wrist grip. Now that explains why my groups change over time. I have been trying to figure this out, and I keep blaming it on fatigue, moving the sight. I'm such a newbie and I've been shooting for 25 years.
This man is the Albert Einstein of Archery! Josh Jones u are all around the most knowledgeable ive seen.. And ive been in shooting since 1992!! Much Respect for MFJJ he is one of a kind! Rock On SVA n Elk Shape...👍🏹
Thank you for this class! I needed it ,I kept avoiding this part of of shooting a bow! I’m a struggling Archer coming back from two shoulder injuries and a accumulation of years!. Thanks again you have a great crew !
After watching this video today I went out and shot my second Robin Hood in the last 46 days. I knew I was holding something wrong, now I know it was my grip placement. Thanks for the video. I have been shooting archery off and on for the past 42 years. Shot the same bow for 26 years and picked up a new Mathew V3 31 back in August of 2021.
I've shot wrist sling my whole life. As a kid, was taught put your hand up like stop sign, put bow in crease down through center of palm, relax the fingers. Bow does what it wants in shot follow through, and doesn't fall because of the sling. Good info
I needed this video big time! I recorded myself in slow motion to see how my arrows were flying and instantly saw myself tensing up and gripping the bow right as I was firing. What about some tips on using a thumb release properly?
That would be awesome. I go back and forth with a hinge and thumb realease to practice and struggle to get that same shot sequence with my thumb release. Im assuming that im using it wrong
@@wvbowhunter1 I won’t plug other specific channels here as it seems a bit rude to do so, but there are lots of good videos out there that teach how to use a thumb button in the same manner you use a hinge. In fact, I would be surprised if MFJJ doesn’t have one here or with Elk Shape. It really makes switching between the two very easy. I have a hinge as a training aide/tgt release and a thumb button for hunting.
I actually purchased my whole setup from SVA in that store and met Josh. His bleeding passion and knowledge of archery made me become more passionate about the sport itself. In fact it almost made me think I'm in the wrong business. Glad I'm close enough to visit this store. Thank you for this video as well because it actually showed me the things I'm doing right without realizing that. It also reaffirmed what I know I do wrong which is snatching the bow during a release. Little gorilla glue in my palm will fix that...😂
I just bought my first bow, a Bear Species. I realize I need to adjust my hold. I'm keeping the fingers loose, but only keeping the upper part of my hand on the riser.
Something my local shop told me to try is to not grab my bow until my arrow hits my target, just thinking about that during the shot process and after the shot helped me dramatically
This is an awesome video as it completely makes sense. Do not put any extra outside energy into the bow grip, at all. Taking the wrist out of the grip is not easy to explain, I guess.
I want to thank you for this honest video. I recently picked up a new bow and Ive been struggling with the comfort of the grip. I just went out and shot a round of 12 with my fingers wide open, just using my palm against the grip. Not only was it more comfortable, but my groups were tighter. It was weird at first as I kept feeling the bow was going to fall when I was drawing back, but I just had to have confidence that wasnt going to happen and get used to it. Thank you again!!!
Oh man thank you for posting this! Try doing a side plank with the same grip you'd use in archery. You can do it on the ground or use a Pushup bar and train it that way. It will even help you with stability. 🎯⚡🦅
Wow that’s exactly what I’ve been doing! Thanks MFJJ! I was wondering why I wasn’t being as consistent the longer I shot, and that’s most likely the reason! Thanks for the tips!
This varies greatly depending on the shape of the grip, and the shelf of the bow. I have a bow that damn near demands a higher wrist. The difference being, that grip doesn’t change as I get tired. The lighter trick (he used a tube of wax) works, but again introduces tension where it shouldn’t be. 1 finger on the front, especially with a relaxed hand, works just fine. More people should try a finger sling. For the most part, there isn’t much of anything “wrong” here, just the implication that this is the only way and you have to do it this way period.
Great video, I know I don’t grip the bow correctly, I’ll have to add the corner exercise to my routine….more concerning, Jake isn’t watching elkshape, I know MFJJ has said how to hold the bow before.
I used to shoot high wrist and switched to this style a few years back. I had to shorten my draw length about 1/2 inch to be able to cradle the grip properly.
I’m totally going to try this, lately I can’t figure out why I’m shooting right, my bow was dialed it. But I have an elbow injury and didn’t shoot for almost 6 months. And I’m thinking it’s the way I grip, and with my new release as I’m seems to have misplaced my old one
Man mfjj you are a good shooting teacher! I've been working on that just instinctively but not the total wrist position.. think sometime after 3 hrs of shooting I might touche my grip with a finger or 2 and everything start going mayhem...
Great video since I have Covid I will practice with my fingers off the riser thanks for the videos going elk hunting this year for my first experience bow hunting of course hey if you guys coming up north east please let me know so I can meet you guys I am from Boston ma if you guys do any tac close to me love to shoot with you guys thank
Question: I get the low wrist and the open grip. Seems great in a controlled environment. I live in Hawaii where we have tradewinds and random gusts. How do you stabilize the riser with that grip when the wind is taking you for a ride?
No but for real what am i supposed to do with the garmin xero a1i pro my button is on the front of my bow and I notice myself throwing some wild shots when I’m rushed
So I know Jake even mentioned it, but it wasn’t well addressed in this video - it seems to me that there would be 0.5-1” difference in draw length between the high wrist and proper wrist.
You should drop a video on the elk shape grip installation.I’m having trouble with the grip staying attached to the bow any grip tape or extra glue recommend?
MFJJ, wouldn’t carrying a high wrist also add a bit to your draw length as well? I’m not talking about an inch, but more like 1/4” - 1/2”, depending on how high/straight the wrist is. With that, going from a high wrist (held by muscle) to a relaxed wrist that follows the grip or riser angle will slightly change where you anchor by a small change in draw length, correct? If you are a high wristed shooter, you may need to adjust your d-loop or draw length to keep the same anchor point (again, not talking inches).I use the “stop signal” position. If you hold your arm out (without a bow) and then make the stop signal like you would do if signaling someone driving a car, your hand/wrist should be right where it is naturally best positioned for relaxed and repeatable shooting. Holding your bow in that position does exactly what you are showing here in this video. Keep up on the good info sharing! We are building the militia of Robin Hooders every day!
His problem stems from him not having a wrist sling, standard on every ready-to-hunt box store bow. Even when holding the bee's wax with his fingers he is grabbing the bow with his thumb.
I think the reason he can’t hold his hand up the way you’re asking is because he has his elbow too straight instead of just outside of straight and with a slight bend

In my humble amateur opinion. Proper, consistent grip is the #1 fundamental in archery.

This just changed everything for me. So simple and easily overlooked. Thanks for the help!
thanks MFJJ for showing us all we suck at gripping the bow. lol. on the real, great info as always.
I practiced that grip using a piece of an arrow that I cut off to stop me touching the front of the bow. Lots to get used to.
Glad this popped up today, had issues with fatiguing at the end of a 3D event yesterday. Thanks MFJJ!
This absolutely took all torque out!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!
Very helpful! Didnt know the depth and seriousness of shooting that way...thanks boss!!

Sage advice right there. It is good to go back to basics during the off season and force yourself to get better. Keep turning them videos out guys.
This is incredibly timely. Thanks for the content!

MFJJ bringing the passion to Elk Shape RUclips! He’s like the Yoda of archery.
Dan from elkshape is approximately the same size as Yoda I think
