I am on year three with what Joel teaches....it has totally changed on how I execute my shot. He is so good, believe in it...if you can't do it...TRY HARDER! When your brain allows you to leave the aiming room and STAY focused on JUST your release it will blow your mind how "easy" it gets!!

Shot IQ does nothing more than complexify the mental side of shooting. He takes very simple well-known concepts and re-words them in an attempt to make memorable catch phrases. I have over 30 years of competitive shooting, to include 20 years worth in the Marine Corps. Shot IQ adds steps in to a process that should have as few steps as possible. You see, when you take something simple, and make it sound complex, and then throw in some fancy overly-worded "solution", the conman is able to fool the mark in to thinking he speaks magic. First things first with shooting sports: build a solid repeatable form for your shooting discipline; second: keep your head out of it as much as possible. Lastly, in order to help keep your head out of the shot process, reduce as much as possible any and all fine motor movement. With archery, this is why pulling through the shot is taught. It involves large muscle groups that cannot sense movement like fine motor movements can, which communicate with your brain. This is why "trigger punching" more often leads to shot anticipation issues - you may call that "target panic". It is a mind body connection. Disconnect the mind from the body, and the problem is solved. Let your mind focus on aiming, while your body is executing the shot. It's that simple. None of that "Thoughts are what you hear, thinking is what you say" or whatever that nonsense is he's spewing.

Want to test yourself... with an stan onnex release you can use a firing pin to stop it from actually going off. If you're handed the release and you don't know if the pin is in or not, watch what happens.

Yup its true. And paper will show that also.
It will show the difference in a surprise and knwoing it goes off.
    Hinge release is super easy..
Thumb button, not so much .. lol
Worked that this week with a thumb buttom and its tough.. very tough to get that surprise shot.
Simply because my hand eye coordination is on the ball, which makes it even harder..
I sit there for 5 second adding pressure.. if I dont, I know when it goes off..
Might buy a different thumb button release.
    Using the Tru-Ball Blade.
1" paper tear difference when I know its going off.

I would drive Joel Turner nuts. I have mastered the skill of turning my thoughts off. I am not thinking at all. the more chaos there is around me, the easier it is for me to clear my mind. Guys it is scary how easy I can do it. my wife gets mad cause i just set completely without conscious thought. every time i shoot a bow i do this. i go into reflex mode. im aiming, and pulling through, but the rest im allowing my body to do it's natural thing to prevent punching.

@BowDisciples it is meditation. I learned to use this method from a Japanese archer. He taught me the whole ritualistic way they shoot. I even draw over hand like they do. Then when I was diagnosed with PTSD they taught me to use meditation for all kinds of stuff. Ended up doing it so much that I can just go into that state without the breathing part. I get buck fever just like anyone else, if you don't you shouldn't be hunting as that is the rush, then after I enjoy that a bit I go into "the pen state" and begin my draw. I'm not saying I never punch. I do from time to time, but I'm really good at the lock up that keeps me on target. I am still working on the surprise method, and back tension. Mfjj videos with Joel, and some other videos with Joel prompted me to start that journey. It is hard to be surprised though when your mind is empty. That is what would drive him nuts. Basically every shot is a surprise because I'm not thinking about it. My eye is locked on that target, I'm even blocking out feel, building tension through my muscles (back tension), and letting my hand close naturally as I apply pressure to the draw. Your hand will naturally close your grip, and it will happen smoothly creating a clean break. I'm not even thinking of putting my thumb on the button. Muscle memory and reflex does it. To pull harder eventually your thumb has to tuck into your palm. When you let it happen naturally you will get a surprise shot. Here is another thing, your body will naturally put the arrow where you are focused. Where your eye is your hand will follow. I should probably add that I have designated marksman training, and the clear mind is a big part of that training. I apply the breathing and everything to Archery. Archery has so much more than a rifle though. Archery has to do with all of you. Rifle not as much.

I have found that archery has an over abundance of "talk" .... So many people that are "experts" will talk themselves in circles over the course of a few years... archery is just incredibly nuanced and it is a very individualized sport. There are a few basics that work with every human, but beyond that, you need to find your own shot and work on things you feel you need to work on. Too many people these days think they can just listen to george ryalls or joel turner and that will help fix their shot... but in my experience, nothing will help more than shooting lots of arrows. If you want to actually get significantly better with your bow, you need to shoot 150+ arrows a day for a few months. Also 100 good arrows is better than 200 bad arrows of course, but I know lots of people that just don't shoot enough. Nothing any of these "experts" say matters because they don't shoot enough to actually learn to apply it subconsciously while in their shot.
Strangely enough, some people I shoot with can only shoot a surprise shot and struggle to shoot a command shot. Its just how their mind and body works through the shot process... other guys I know cannot shoot a surprise shot after 5 years of trying everything in the book... they just cant do it, so they command their shot and they shoot phenomenal anyways. I try to do my best to get close to a surprise, but I still tend to know when the shot is going to break. Its just suuuch a nuanced sport and there are so many variables at play... I always tell new archers to try and learn the "cookie cutter" release style and form in the beginning... and then after doing that for a while they often find their own little variables that work better for them. If you look at the Pro line at vegas or any large event, you will see tons of different shot processes, forms, and release styles.... and thats how it should be since we are all built differently and our minds are not robotic.
This is all just my opinion of course... I encourage everyone to do what they feel works for them.
