Fossil's Best Smartwatches Are Beautiful - But Google's Software Isn't

  • You might think the modern smartwatch doesn’t have much in common with its century-old mechanical ancestor, but you'd be wrong. See, as different as they look, all these generation-5 smartwatches from the Fossil Group actually pack the same basic guts - just like a hundred years ago, when manufacturers would put the same mechanical movement into a variety of cases to sell different styles. That’s why the Fossil Group has the widest selection of smartwatches running Google’s WearOS platform, but -watch out for the double edged sword-that same platform is also what makes them tough to recommend. I've spent a month with the Diesel On Axial; the Michael Kors Lexington 2; and the Emporio Armani Connected Smartwatch 3 (and four months with Fossil's own Carlyle HR). Join me for a MrMobile roundup review!

I don’t understand why Mr Mobile doesn’t get more recognition. His reviews are based around real world use explains to us the pros and cons of not only using an item but also owning an item. I’ve been put off buying headphones before because they use micro USB connections something that isn’t often highlighted by the bigger tech RUclipsrs. That isn’t to knock other tech RUclipsrs, it’s simply to appreciate the work, time and genuine salesmanship that Mr. Mobile’s reviews are known for. Fave tech youtuber by a country mile. 🙌🏼

Didn't know he wasn't well recognized. All the tech enthusiasts I know, myself included, see his recommendations as a quality stamp. I'm sure most big tech companies know him too. I agree, he's arguably the best in his line of work.

Asbjørn Rindom Christensen I may understated his recognition, it was more so that the videos don’t attract as many views as ‘flashier’ videos. I find these use videos as the best examples of “what tech is like to live with”. Certainly would agree that his recommendations are essentially a quality deal. ☺️

Honestly Michael has such good content and i always keep coming to his videos for reviews, but i don't always hit the like button for every video cos its outside my habit. I guess that's the kind of matured crowd he attracts, no fuss, no marketing bs about the product, just an honest review in a real world scenario. And he manages to do it without making his personal opinions seem excessive like other techtubers. I love this guy's style

You could probably argue that being open source Android needs tech companies to make the most of it's offering and watch makers aren't exactly renowned for their software dev teams. The other problem is the lack of capable CPU, the 3100 didn't exactly deliver to expectations.

Drop support? Wear OS has kept the watches updated way back to the old Moto 360 gen 2 & Huawei gen 1 with battery life up to 2 days.
Samsung is horrible, my Gear S3 will probably never be updated, and now they are calling the Galaxy watches old.

Exposed it to water and the back of the watch came off and it got ruined. After lots of back and forth they offered a replacement. She managed to get her money back from BestBuy instead and got a Galaxy Watch.

It's more like a watch that just happens to track my steps, sleep and shows notifications. I thought I would want a watch that does more like NFC payments, WiFi, smart assistants, music playback, GPS... The best two things about it that I love above all else would be the battery life(3 weeks on a single charge), and the price($40!). It's enough, for me, at least.

Have been using this watch from early 2016 to current. Hasn't disappoint me at all. It has mic & speaker, Wi-Fi connectivity, tough Gorilla Glass 3; so many time my watch on my wrist hit walls, door handles, the glass survives having no scratch on it. It may not have a heart rate sensor (which i don't bother not having), it has an app; ZenWatch Manager, where the watch can be a camera view-finder. arrange my YT music/video playlist on my phone, cast it to my chromecast, used my watch to change the music/video playlist. The chipset maybe old & cannot compete with the current 3100, but as long as this watch still in working order I will still use it. The Fossil sport is now down to $99 on amazon. Skagen recently discounted the falster 2 down to $69. My gen4 explorist is down to $120 now, and the $500+ Casio WSD-F20 is down to $155. At those prices the WearOS flaws I think become more tolerable. So it seems like all the WearOS watch prices are dropping. The new fossil garrett models and the latest Casio WSD-F30 are down to $220. Since the new SD3100 is the same thing as the SD2100, with a dumb-watch "battery power mode" thrown in... all these watches are really the same thing. RAM being the most significant internal difference.
I've been on Android wear / WearOS now since 2014. The one thing I ABSOLUTELY love about this platform is Google does not force-obsolete the old devices over time. I still get updates for my old moto 360, and even though the battery only lasts 6-7 hours, and the snapdragon 400 is painfully slow for anything beyond basic notifications... at least its still going. I still like the way it looks so I wear it around the house. The moto360 in 46mm is still a larger screen than anything else in 2020. I mean the actual pixel array from edge to edge spans a larger functional area.

How can these new ones have a thick black band around the display when the screen of my nearly 5 year old watch truly goes edge to edge? It seems they have gotten worse instead of better...... • @GabrielIgnacio
      @GabrielIgnacio 4 года назад

A lot of battery woes with the Gen 5 is still solely due to Snapdragon wearable SoCs still being bleh in performance. Of course I'm sure further time developing a better hardware platform for WearOS would help too but it's still a matter of the hardware being a sluggish and the software being too buggy at times.
Basically, Qualcomm needs to get off their ass and Google needs to allocate some people from the Pixel crew or wherever to make WearOS better as well.

If you have an Android get a Galaxy Watch period
    there are 3 main options
1st the budget active: with a sleek bezel-less design and it can measure blood pressure but no LTE or a speaker
2nd active 2: ECG, blood pressure, smooth new UI, LTE, stainless steal, sleek bezel-less design and a virtual bezel (available in two sizes and 3 variants: aluminium, stainless steal and a sports addition) I guess you can call active 2 the "Apple Watch" for Android phones (for a much better price)
3rd the OG galaxy watch it has everything that active 2 has except ECG and blood pressure meter but in return you get a classic look and a more premium look and feel with a real rotating bezel which you get addicted on like crack ( available in two sizes and all are stainless steal)
ONLY thing I would say that WearOS has over Tizen is google maps but that's it
Bixby has been updated and now it is almost as good as Google assistant and the voice is not robotic anymore and sound natural and fluid

I've used Emporio Armani watches for 12 + years. So I wanted to switch over to their smart watches. I got one last year. Design was GORGEOUS. People around work and friends complimented it lal the time. However, the WEAR OS is terrible. It lagged, functions stopped working, etc. Also, mine broke after 2 months (the charging ring popped out like you mentioned). However, they do have great customer service and provided me with a gift card with the original cost of the watch. I will try once again with the new model. I have been faithful to Armani for over a decade so I will give it one more go.

Surprisingly the original Moto 360 with Android Wear 1.5 runs a lot smoother than what Wear OS is today. It was better back then in my opinion.
Shameless plug but, my Fossil sport will be arriving next week. And I'll be doing a comparison between it and my Moto 360 on my channel.

I hardly doubt that Google will ever fix the problems of WearOS.
In 1-2 years they probably stop developing for WearOS at all and don't care anymore... just like they already do.
It's mostly the exact same as with tablets.

I thought about getting one of the gen 5's but after watching and reading a lot of negative reviews I decided against it. Instead I recently got the ticwatch pro 4g/lte and love it! I got it due to the bump in ram over the original ticwatch pro and it's soooo much better. The only issue I have with it that I didn't have with my gear S3 is taking calls on the watch. It doesn't always work. Most of the time it just hands it over to the phone. Other than that it runs butter smooth and the battery lasts me 3 1/2 days.

Wow. Yet to decide on what to get though!

I use a 007 N64 style watch face I've got loaded with relative data, I have to sync about once every few days, but other than that it runs fine and smooth. Sure it took a hour to setup the FIRST AND ONLY TIME so I dont find this an issue. I enjoy sitting down to experience a new gadget so thats me. The Juliana HR is fucking sexy bold and looks perfect with the 007 watch face, I did not hesitate.

Operation is smooth, love the few always on watch face that leverages the 3100 to allow animated second hand in ambient mode with no battery impact. I'm using my Huawei watch 2 which i think is just over 2 years old. I have had zero hardware problems. As for software I have had a few minor bugs here and there but over all for something this old I'm happy to hold on to it for another year.
It lasts just about a day on maximum usage. Costs 100 bucks, had a speaker, no crown, great screen, 7/10 software speed and a minimal design and fully water proof. .
Not all of those are pros depending on the user but all I'll say is I'd be hard pressed to move on from this watch to a fossil. But I guess i have to use it to fully decide if it worth the upgrade.
I really do wonder if some of these bugs are down to the watch maker instead of wear OS. Only some I get that wear OS is a joke but I do wonder.

Spot on summary Michael. Your comments mirror mine almost exactly. WearOS is just too buggy, laggy, janky for me to recommend openly based on my experiences with a gen4 fossil explorist and an older fully updated moto 360 46mm. Bluetooth or wifi connections can drop out at random without warning, so email and text notifications are unreliable and unpredictable. When things do bug out you can forget about Google or WearOS correcting itself. It's totally up to the user to www search or reddit search for a solution. WearOS app updates are 50/50 in my experience. Half the time they download /install without a hitch, the other half its a nightmare getting them to work.
MOST IMPORTANTLY... These are the EXACT SAME PROBLEMS from ~5 years ago on Android Wear. Its 2020 and Goggle has had HALF A DECADE TO FIX THIS. The best piece of advice I can give anyone is to just avoid WearOS, UNLESS you are a hard core tech-minded type who enjoys the challenge of www searching for solutions and corrective actions. If having an inoperative watch for weeks/months as you search for solutions doesn't bother you, then this might be a platform for you to consider.
