- This review is for the BCN3D Sigma 3d printer - NOT the new Sigma R17. The Sigma R17 IS en route and will be reviewed on this channel. Once it arrives, I'll be sure to let you know!
I was given the chance to review the BCN3D Sigma 3d printer by Designbox3D. The printer couldn't stay with me for long, so I would have to get everything done rather quickly. I was able to print some models and get a good idea how it performs. PLUS, new developments towards the end!
Big thanks to Designbox3D!

Hey!
You really need to get your hands on a Cubicon Single. I finally received mine from Imakr and it is fantastic. No filament smell whatsoever, and so far, not a single failed print using their software.
Thanks for the review!
build quality seems really good, it even uses linear guide rails (which are more precise and expensive) instead of the rod rails that everybody else uses.
That looks like an awesome printer.
Love this printer - so want one!
one of the coolest approaches to dual head extruders so far.
test some dissolvable support material!
Independent heads are an awesome creation. Genius!
#HighFive as always
Great mini-review. Can't wait to see a fuller one when you get another one. Would really love to see a printer with the Kraken though :-/ I'm still building mine so it's a bit far off. As always though #highfive.
hello 3d P.N !!!
i have a question for you about this printer, for my specific case, in my company, i was intending to design functional prototypes, we work in a workshop and manufacture fruit grading machines, we are from spain, next to barcelona, where this printer is created and designed, i went to see it personally, but still got some questions, it says it can print nylon, in my company we need some strong parts and FDA approved, but what worry me is the tolerance of the 3d prints, for example , if i have a shaft of 15 mm, and i want to make in my design a hole for this shaft to go along the part, does thisprinter will have the right resolution per layer (0,005 mm if im right) to make the right adjustment for the hole /shaft? or it will miss whatever i put in solidworks, and print a 15.05 diameter hole maybe too lose (15.10) or too tight? (15.00) .
I am working with a new type of machine and for maybe one year , all parts will be going to be printed with this printer, so i need some printer that could do this work precisely, and with nylon FDA, (like talumans) do you know any printer with these characteristics?
Thanks for the video , and the demonstration, you really show your helping attitude, among the tech fans like us! !
:)
SO many possibilities here.. :) [Digital Dual High Five]
Good info Joel looking forward to seeing this one reviewed once you have ample time to tweak software and hardware. It would be a difficult buying decision considering roughly $2600 US, when greater print volume and potential expansion to a dual extrude exist with the GMax and just $500 more. None the less the printer has my interest! #highfive
I would love your review of the Diamond hot end, including color mixing, etc. Good job - considering only 10 days on a brand new machine, while only working overnight... Respect. #highFive
What kind of settings would you adjust in order to keep the colors from bleeding, or the prints from being stringy?
+3D Printing Nerd
Does that unit have a filtration system for the fumes? That would be the only reason I could think of as to having such strong(loud) fans.
+relik0fages The printer is open so....
relik0fages it has, the filtration system is an optional
Thanks for the great presentation. I would like to print Nylon and PC mechanical parts. I would need to use dissolvable support material to get complex parts. I have been using Taz5 single extrusion for my prints so far. Which dual extrusion printer would you suggest. I would stay under $2000. Thanks,
Hey - thanks for this review. Have you actually had the chance to follow up with a more in-depth version? In any case - I am looking for dual extrusion printers. Do you know alternatives that you have tested, reviewed or that you could recommend?
I haven't had the chance to follow up. I think they'll send another one my way and give me more time, but, it might be a while. As for alternatives, nothing like this. The Raise3D N2+ is dual and I'm liking it a lot, and the Prusa i3 mk2 has a 4 color option coming soon.
Hey Joel! I have been wanting a nice starter printer and my budget is about $250 but there is just SOOOOO many to choose from...what is your personal opinion on the flsun delta kossel diy kit 3d printer or any other printer you think I should get? Thanks in advance!!!
I am very much looking at this printer. It is almost $1000 more than a couple others I am looking at. All are dual extruders with auto leveling and calibration. One of the others uses a Cyclops like head with full blending abilities. But I really like this set up for using water soluble filament with. One question is can I make it use the 1.75 material? I have a lot of it already.
When are you planning to do the final review of this printer :-)
+JCMG As soon as I get it back :) Unfortunately there is no timeline on that yet.
Hey I have to decide between this printer and the Ultimaker 2+.
Which one would you choose?
Do you think that I could put the Ultimaker 2+ in my room while I´m inside?
Thanks very much
You should do a review on the A8 Desktop Printer Prusa i3 kit from gearbest?? I'm getting that one and would be awesome if you did a review on that!
Great review. I also own this printer and the print quality is really good.
Unfortunately i can also confirm the very high noise level from the fans.
+Christian Gassner (mr cg) Which fan is causing this loud noise? I see in this video that it's not coming from the fans on each hot-end.
It is coming from the smaller fans for the hotend cooling rips. It is not caused by the fan at the front used for the nozzle.
Christian Gassner Sorry, that really confused me. There is only 1 fan per nozzle/hot-end that i can see, right? In this video, when the noise goes full loud, i don't see those fans spinning. Can't see any other fans either.
Christian Gassner By any chance do you have any experience with the ultimaker 2+ and if so, how would you rate it compared to your bcn3d sigma? They cost exactly the same for me here.
how does the zortax m200 or m300 compare to this? print quality wise ?
looks like a pretty cool printer! I have 2 Afinia printer. I have the H800 and the H800+. Could you see if you can get Afinia to allow you to do a review of these printers? I would like to see what your thoughts are. Thanks, Larry
Hey Larry! I'll try to reach out!
I'm interested in this printer
Part two, three years later. You know, so you have _adequate time_ to figure out how well it performs ;-)
Looking forward to the full review because there are a lot of good things with this machine... Saying that, the noise issue might be a real problem for me.
+rosebuddesign635 I get the feeling they are hard at work getting the noise level down as I type this.
+3D Printing Nerd Well that would be great! High five! :)
+3D Printing Nerd Which fan is the noise coming from exactly? didn't look like it was from the two fans on the hot-ends.
DrR1pper It was the fan on the electronics under the machine.
3D Printing Nerd Thx. I'm really struggling to decide between this and an ultimaker 2+. The noise level on the bcn3d sigma is really off-putting for me. But i would like to be able to print with things like polycarbonate and i'm a little worried the um2+'s 260*C limit is not quite enough for good adhesion between layers.
Can u review the folger tech ft-5 as a large platform affordable printer?
+JUCE DA MCEE Sure! They would need to send one to me!
cool cuz the gmax is too exspenive for mw right now so i was thinking about getting one or even the tevo black widow which i hear is good to
3D Printing Nerd when does the full review comes out?
Because it isn't fully enclosed, I am worried that abs might warp. Is that a problem with this printer?
+ostrichbean that's a good question. I haven't got a chance to get it back yet, but when I do I'll send some ABS through it and see.
The big issue I see is that it uses 3mm filament. I wonder if they plan on making one that uses 1.75mm or making a conversion kit. Most people I know only use 1.75mm so to get the bigger one just for a single printer is going to be a tough sell.
+Matthew Martin
I think (as do a lot of others) that the differences are rather
minor. So just my 2 things I know from experience. We've been using 3 mm
for some years and now we are moving towards 1.75.
1.75 mm filament is very easy to entangle, especially, if it is not
on spool. You can even easily create knots on the filament and it is
very hard to untangle. As long as you keep it on spool and always buy on
spool, you should be fine.
3 mm filament on the other hand, creates very high tension when the
spool is about to end. Sometimes the last couple of meters are unusable
because of this and you have to throw the rest of the spool away.
3mm
More rigid - easier to print with flexible plastics. I couldn't make
my 1.75mm printer print with NinjaFlex using standard bowden extruder. Can extrude fasterQuality is less affected by changes in diameter - it is a concern mostly when using cheap plastics
1.75mm
More popular, easier to buyNeeds smaller extruder than 3mmEasier to use with bowden tubeMore precise when printing
can you use ABS plastic wit this printer without problems?
+József-Lehel Karacsonyi I'm told you can, and it totally makes sense. I didn't have a chance to send ABS through the system, but the heated build plate and extruder should handle it no problem.
Where is the fanmail Friday I was waiting for it.
+Otso Kivivuori It's Thursday in the US. Tomorrow is Friday for them.
+Teh Stranger? No, it is friday tomorrow. I don't know where the video is.
Panoreth 3D Printing uhm....
+Teh Stranger? Sorry, it is friday today, i typed that really bad. Lol. :)
+Otso Kivivuori it'll be out later tonight!
Hay could you review new matters mod t
I have a cube from 3D Systems its almost exactly the same
Joel, you need to have a scale on which you rate printers or items ... 1 to 5 "High Fives" perhaps? You can credit me with the idea - lol. #HighFive
+Richard T Ha! Great idea!
+3D Printing Nerd The bill for my consulting fee is in the mail ... I accept all major credit cards and 3D trinkets as payment ;) #HaveAGreatWeekend
+Richard T Or based on the parking lot video - High One to High Five?
+3D Printing Nerd what is a 3d printer you recommend for around 500 to 1000 dollars for a novice to intermediate?
I would say a wanhaow duplicator or some type of prus i3.
I don't mean to be one of those people that are always self advertising their channel but, i did a video on printer for under $400 a while ago on my channel. Hope that helps. :)
+Panoreth 3D Printing thanks I'll check it out
+Panoreth 3D Printing heading over now 😀
Couldn't you print bigger filament buckets? shame about the noise. I need to find something as quiet at my Flashforge Finder but prints more than just PLA, will probably get the creator pro or something down the line.
+3D Printing Nerd, thanks for this review.
For people curious about the lizard model that Joel printed it's called the "Dual Draudi" on Thingiverse: www.thingiverse.com/thing:948577
The Sigma, Sigma R17 and Sigmax look like interesting printers, but given the number of dual-extruder printers coming out of China now would you classify the BCN3Ds as good value for money?
Where is fan mail Friday
+ty olaf recording tonight! had to delay it a bit. sorry about that.
What's the cost?
I don't know off the top of my head right now, here is the link to it at Matterhackers: 3d.pn/sigma
I wonder how it does with flexible filaments with the bowden setup.I don't think 3mm printers are long for this world, I would not invest into a 3mm printer now days as 1.75mm filament is really a lot more accessible and cheaper. Bowden design and a max speed of 60mm is troubling to me. What is the limiting factor, why can't you go faster? My 2 direct drive printers which have more weight on the carriage are capable of going 90-100mm/sec, and my delta with bowden -- currently under construction is capable of going 150mm/sec and up, so 60 seems really slow -- really slow.
+kazolar Did I say limited to 60? Shoot, if so, then I misspoke and that isn't the case.
+kazolar Ah, okay, I said optimal. you have to remember I didn't have this long and I sliced only 3 models for printing. Once I get to keep it for longer I'll go faster. promise.
That printer is quiet.... Compared to a Makerbot mini... Lol
High five!
hi
so different design with dual independent head ...
love that machine.... send the prize to me, joking! #highfive (I don't do twitters, sorry.)
Dammit! ... second.
#Highfive :D
#highfive
aww i thought both print at the same time for extra speed and all :c booooo
