  • In this episode I tear down the Sigma to it's bare frame (almost), and along the way, I discover something that feel is a huge engineering mistake!

I'm half tempted to do away with the Idex and try and turn mine into some sort of corexy voron vzero copy.. the rails are good the bed is ok, its just those nema 14's and the crappy electronics (they did put a bit of effort into customizing marlin , with the fancy calibration routines and the graphics, I bet that's where most of the cost of production went Lol)

Somehow this reminds me of the "fancy" coffee machine from work.
For those unaware: there's a good chance that that really big coffee machine in your (current or former) office is leased, not unlike the giant printer/copier. So you pay a deposit on the machine, then a monthly lease for it, need to pay for supplies, AND they almost always require a service contract if you want the machine. Plus, at least in the US, insurance will require the office have certified service technicians which always add to the cost. One of those "can make 40 different drink" coffee makers probably sets an office back a few thousand a year (even though the machine itself is around $10k-$15k).
So one day, the one in my office broke. The repair person eventually showed up and started working on it. They have a literal key to open them so random people can't just open it and try to repair the machine themselves. They start taking things apart, removing bits and pieces. They paused to go to the bathroom and I decided to take a look. Sitting there on the work cart, sheered along the layer line and obviously deformed and damaged from heat, were multiple 3D printed parts that held the water boiler, water lines, and various mechanical parts together to the frame. The repair person came back and continued taking things out. Eventually, the closed the unit and rolled the cart away. Word came back that it would be a week or more for the parts to come in. I realized that the time was because they probably had to put in an order for new printed parts, get the parts at some distribution point, then ship them to the repair person who would then bring them in.
A (in my office's case) $12k coffee maker had around 2 dozen 3D printed parts holding things that got hot... and they were breaking apart like a test from CNC Kitchen, and probably cost no more then $40-$50 (depending on material). It took a week+ to produce and ship said parts, to be improperly utilized due to machine design, and the whole time my coworkers didn't have coffee AND we still had to pay for the machine even though it was down for nearly a month (1-2 weeks for the repair person to be available, 1-2 weeks for replacement parts to show). Heat and 3D parts don't go together unless you design that from the start... and I don't think they did such a thing.

Argh! So frustrating, I had a layer shift after following bcn3ds instructions to check drivers, now the ribbon cable has bit the dust taking a driver with it! Why oh why did they design it to be so difficult to work on!
My stats printer R17 (nearly 4 years old)
    480 hours, 234 prints started , 112 completed,
9.49km traveled on x0, 9.99km on x1, 22.9km on y, 887.58m of filament extruder 0, 578.75m extruder 1..its not like its worn from over use.
And that's 2.85mm filament so a kg is 320-410meters so it's literally seen a maximum of 6 reels?

Instead of breakout boards for the tool heads, why not use Duet3D tool boards? We have a new version coming out with mounting holes to match the Hemera XS.

Regarding the breakout board idea - Have you looked into Wham Bam Mutant, Biqu Hermit Crab, Xchange, or other manual tool changer systems?

    • @BreaksandMakes
      @BreaksandMakes  2 года назад

I have a mutant on another machine, too big to work on this. It will have to be a custom thing for sure

I wonder if under extrusion , extruder stopping mid print and layer shifts are anything to do with those petg heatsinks, it boggles the mind the whole chassis is aluminium could they not thought about using that as heatsink if their budget was that tight ?? just looking through CAD as you inspired me to try and do something and the new CAD has heatsinks on X axis drivers & steppers (still hearing people with epsilons having layer shifts tho :-/

  • @MiggyManMike

Wait, was that galvanic corrosion on those bracket ? As in steel hardware on an aluminium plate ? :O
The cable thing is an interesting point, I've always been wary about ribbon cables just for current carrying and their eventual failure modes, personally id much rather work with silicone cables and (usual gx12/16 connectors), I mean yes ribbon cables do offer a cleaner solution but they're not for me.

    • @BreaksandMakes

Had to google galvanic corrosion, I believe it actually is!

I guess the salty air there might have worked its way into the garage as well. The design is weird/bad though indeed, very curious if you can get it into something proper! 2000, I wouldn’t expect I have to mod anything indeed.

I have bought 3 Sigma R17 in fev 2017 and use them near 2500-3000h each and I always had problems. I had noticed even if I didn't used the second extruder, the stepper motor and driver always were very hot. The motor didn't move during the prints but it was very hot (I think over 65°C). These printers made me crazy. Really. I have just keep one, don't use it. I think I will do the same. Thank you.
