  • My Ultimaker 2+ arrived, and before I could use it, I would have to remove it from the box. In this video, I took it out of the box and used it for the first time. It's a decent machine, and I'm looking forward to having it in my arsenal.

    Joel -- a couple of tips that might have been the cause of the jam. When you load filament, don't push it up so much. Just hand load it until it's in the drive mechanism, then press the button and it will run slow. When you see it enter the bowden tube from the drive mechanism, then press the button again and it will run high speed into the hot end. it may have hit the nozzle before slowing down since it was already pretty far into the tube when you started. Second, break off the curved/bent end of the filament before loading it so it doesn't try to kick off to the side as it's entering the hot end. Lastly, pull the blue clip where the tube enters the extruder and make sure the tube is seated all the way in. This will help prevent any gap at the end of the tube. I love my UM2+ and so will you! Your first upgrade should be a #BondtechQR extruder! They have a great kit specifically for the UM2+. #HighFive

      yep, pushed filament too far before letting the ultimaker auto advance will grind up the filament. Easy to remember in the future.
      +1 for the Bondtech upgrade. although I'm using it on a UM2 not Um2+, so the new feeder could be good enough with the Bondtech.

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 лет назад +1

      Yep, I messed that one up. Dang it. When I initially tried to put the filament in, the feeder gear was going slow, and according to the app, it is suppose to catch the filament start to load it slowly. That wasn't happening, so my 1am brain decided to try it's own method of fixing. I'm telling you, what I think of at 1am sometimes sounds good at the time, but then I wake up the next day and realize I was WAY off. Thankfully, it all got worked out, and the printer is currently printing crazy well. Once the review is done, I will definitely look into getting that Bondtech extruder.

    I had the same filament chewing issue with mine . It would start failing after a layer or two . I found out the feeder was set too tight from factory . I now have it set up at 25% instead of 50% and it works without any issue .
    I hope you will enjoy it as my as I enjoy mine .

    So ironic, I had a filament jam as soon as I first loaded my Ultimaker 2 extended model. Now I'm constantly fighting random problems, heat bed adhesion, not finishing the models (which happened this morning) I even had the filament melt into the bowden tube, I nearly had to replace the whole tube but with some ingenuity I managed to get the fused filament out.

    as an ultimaker owner (sorry Joel!) the filament snarl was user error. it is confusing at first but handy that it fast loads the filament. if you tune the temp you can dial the robot in. usually the first print has the temp a lil high so it prints jam free.
    if you got questions feel free to ask me!

    I think I spotted a little blob on the end of that spool of filament before you attempted to load, that probably created a load of friction in the bowden tube and created the jam. I've had similar things happen on my Ultimaker Original.

  • @DrR1pper

    Joel, someone has probably already said this but when you load filament into the ultimaker 2, you have to press continue very quickly after having inserted just a little bit of the new filament through/into the feeder. Pressing continue after inserting the filament into the feeder (per the lcd instructions) then makes the ultimaker quickly feed in a length of filament that is almost the length of the bowden tube to speed the loading process along (or else it'll take a couple of minutes instead of 5 seconds). In your case, you let the slow moving feeding move the new filament all the way to hot end and then when you pressed continue, the ultimaker tried to quickly move filament the length of the bowden tube through the hot-end in about 5 seconds which as you know....just isn't possible. So the knurled feeder chewed through your filament since it wouldn't budge.
    I experienced the same thing as you the first time. :)

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 лет назад +1

      +DrR1pper Oh yes, MANY people have said it :) Glad to hear I wasn't the only one who experienced this!

    • @DrR1pper
      @DrR1pper 8 лет назад

      3D Printing Nerd Lol. I thought as much. :) When watching your video, the moment i saw you had let it travel all the way to the hot end slowly and was about to press continue, i cringed knowing all too well what was about to happen to your filament at the feeder. Good job on troubleshooting it in quickly though (or at least it looked that way on video). ;)

  • @JJiG
    @JJiG 8 лет назад +1

    Joel I think the filament jam was caused by you, but not directly by you. You should always snip the end to have a nice clean section to insert into the hot end when loading, a small snag would cause the issue you had.
    you've done way more printing than me I'm sure so you should know this =)

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 лет назад

      Normally I snip the end, but the end on this roll was as clean and crisp had I snipped it. I've heard from others that they had loading issues with the very first time they loaded filament, so, it doesn't look like I'm alone. Hey, it cleared quick and works well!

    it Always jams with new filament. Just wiggle the tube on the head side when it loads slowly. often you can help de filement on the back with the hand by pushing it up the feeder.

    Great video as always! #Highfive!
    I've had my UM2 for almost half a year and I'm super happy with it. The build volume is very standard, but where the UM2 really shines imo is its precision. I printed a small box that was more or less air tight when closed, something that was not possible with my old printer. It seems the loading is its weak point since I too got a jam the first time I used it and have had them a few times since then. As is noted in the video though, it's really easy to fix and the printer as a whole is very user friendly.

    14:48 WARNING! See that fillament coming out right now it could jam up during build iff you dont remove it so what you do it with a paint scraper of something other than your hands grab that fillament before the printer takes it with it to the build this could create somethin like a golf ball over the extruder then you have to send it to ultimaker to get it fixed!
    I know this because I have got one of these printers at my school and also have a 3D Printer at home!

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 лет назад

      Yep, totally my error. Filament wasn't taking like the app showed it would, so I pushed it up not knowing doing that would result in the grinding. D'oh. At least my mistake was easily fixed and the machine is printing great right now!

    Hey man I love the video, as usual ;) But you did have a "User error" of sorts. You see as the PLA has pasted into the the tube you should have hit the button at that point. That would then feed the tube quicker without the PLA grinding up. This step is not covered well in the documents that you followed hence the problem you had. Thank you for another great video ;)

    Hey Joel great unboxing, you going to have alot of fun with the printer. I just finished upgrading my ultimaker 2 to the 2 + on my channel . I can tell you the upgrade is well worth it. I just had to laugh when you put the filament in the back. i was like NOOOO joel you pushed it way to far into the Bowden tube. I think the back motor ate the filament as it could not push it any more. next time maybe look at just pushing the filment just passed the back feeder. then let the Ultimaker do the work. #HighUltimakerFIVE

    Nice printer but the prie/build volume ratio does not make it worth the prie tag. I ompare ultimaker to Apple produts, Same components as a regular PC but with a premium price and selliing because of its reputation. Hi Joel. When you do your review will you be using the .20 nozzle? I would really like to see the best quality of this printer. I have test prints from the +2 which are great but no better than my fab mini at 100 micron .4 nozzle. Admittedly the +2 has a much larger print volume and prints quicker.. The final finish of the print is very important to me as I go on to hand finish my builds for casting in resin and whatever reduces the amount of work from printer to mould would be a bonus. Thanks mate and as always #highfive 🙂

      $200? Eek. You could find a Fabrikator Mini or a Monprice Select. However, at this point - you've never printed before. Do what I did, join in the forums and the groups and learn. Soak up what others post about, try to be active, ask questions. It's best to start armed with as much knowledge as possible!

    • @letstrend

      well the you had a filament jam right out of the gate. They also made you have to manuall calibrate the bed. For a 2k printer I would expect this stuff not to happen!

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 лет назад

      ***** I *did* learn that the filament jam was my own fault for not loading the filament right, though, I don't think the process was as easy as the manual describes. I initially tried to insert the filament as the gear was slowly turning, like in the manual, but it wasn't going in. That's when I inserted it too far. Oh well, as for leveling the bed - I sort of agree. Auto bed leveling is becoming the norm, so it's weird to see it missing from such an industry leading machine. I'm still playing with it and I'm definitely taking these two things into consideration when I give my review. Lastly, seriously, thanks for the conversation. #highfive
