  • The unboxing of the Raise3D N2+ 3d printer left me, and most of you, wanting more. I've got the printer printing, and just a small issue to work out before I can consider it ready to go for long prints. Here I update you on the printer, address the build plate clips issue, and apparently stay up way, way too late.

    Thank you very much for the honest review, that's why I trust you and I wait your reviews, I said this so many times before but you saved me a lot of money.
    However I had such great hopes for this printer yet they came shattered after this video, if I pay $3500 for a printer I expect the following:
    1. To work and to get prints right off the box without calling any support.
    2. Easy installation and setup else I might just go get me one of these DIY kits.
    3. Print quality and functionality of all it's features.
    This printer demonstrated none of the above :
    I saw the unboxing and setup was tedious, you still haven't had a good bed level to this none of the prints came out right, and they said one extruder is mor depth than the other that's totally horse manure.
    To have dual extruders meant you can use either and no primary or secondary.
    Too much capabilities on theory but in practical no actual real benefit.
    Anyway I will wait for other videos, I hope it works

    I have one of the first N2+ at home. It is a really nice machine. Yes you must do some things like looking if everything is really thight and so on. BUT after this the machine keeps running and running.
    Had done after the first week playing and calibrating a huge 60 hours print without failure. The community is great and Raise3D trys to help where they can (so it is not only done for Joel)
    Greetings from germany :)

    Joel, normally we don't necessarily see the behind the scene's unboxing and first printing(s) of you trying out a printer. Usually after using a printer for some time you do a video showing the pros and cons of the printer. I particularly like that you don't seem to pull any punches when there's something you don't like about a printer, even if it's a minor issue.
    I'm particularly interested in getting a Raise3D printer contingent upon favorable reviews. But as other's have pointed out, so far you have stated this is the "best quality printer you have ever used", but at the same time, thus far all your test prints have failed.
    I'm looking forward to some follow up videos on this printer, but am curious, is it typical for most 3D printers on the market have some hiccups that need some tweaking to get them printing properly when you first set them up? Because the build quality of a printer doesn't matter if it can't reliably print, and so far this one is batting a zero.
    PS.. also one small critique. When you comment on a companies "customer service", I think without somehow blinding the company to who is calling, your experience may not be typical of their service. The company knowing they are speaking to a reviewer whom they sent a free printer to for review, you are more than likely going to get service that's at least a little above and beyond the "average" service they provide and at the most could be worlds beyond their "typical" customer service.. IE... calling you back sooner, elevating your problem up the chain faster, and so forth. If you really want to report on a realistic expectation of a companies customer service, you need to somehow blind them to who is contacting them for help, so they think you are just an average joe blow consumer, and not a reviewer.

    "The best quality printer I have ever used" - one calibration cube, and a bunch of failed prints.....? Take it this is a $3,500 keeper unit?

    • @karandex
      @karandex 8 лет назад

      It is really a good printer in terms of its print quality, but raise3d is facing some issues with there assembly process and its quite known thing. The support and surface quality is excellent on this machine.

    • @Pigeon_FX
      @Pigeon_FX 8 лет назад +10

      Support and surface quality means little if you can't print anything other then a 20x20x10mm test cube....
      When someone call a printer the best quality they have ever used, i would expect a little more in the way of successful print to qualify that statement.

    looks like PLA would break without the tubes! If the extruder has to pull too hard the radius may become too small?
    Anyone else see that issue?

    I have to agree with a lot of the comments here. It's hard for someone "on the outside" to understand how you can give so high praise to this printer without really going into more details.
    The user interface looks nice with that big graphics display, but how easy is it to use actually? Can you easily control the extrusion value (multiplyer), movement speed and temperatures while a print is already running? How easy is it to change filaments (manual heating, controlling extruder,...). Try to think like someone who wants to use the machine, and the tasks you need to complete to run this printer.
    The mechanics may look shiny in a video, but just how well is it actually designed? The z-leadscrews look like they are 100x overengineered, or how many 100kg of plastic do they wan to accelerate and lift with that thing? Only the guide rails are important to keep the bed stable in the x-y-directions, the screw just needs to hold the weight and push up a little. Unfortunately it's hard to see how the x-y-stage is built. How much do the guide rails flex when you push at the extruder with your hand?
    And then, there is that, from a mechanical designview, awful bend in the filament at the top of the extruder... It really looks to me like they should get back to the drawing board with this machine. At this price point i would definately expect more reliability and actual engineering in a machine. With the information gathered from both of your videos, i would not recommend the machine to anyone, even if you praise it to be "the best".
    Looking forward for more videos as always. I just think that a >2000$ 3D printer should be reviewed with a much more professional setting and engineering background in mind.

      I thought I was conveying potential and that it had it, but it sure doesn't look like I did that properly. Also, very true about reviewing it. THIS was not a review, just an update to the unboxing, since I wasn't able to get a print going for the unboxing. The official review for this printer is months away, as it has a LOT of stuff to cover and go over. I have a video planned for this printer tonight.

    I have the Raise3D N2. It is a very good printer but there are some issues with it. To me, that problem does not look like binding in the tubes (side note: those are not Bowden tubes, it is a direct drive extruder). That issue to me looks like the microstepping with head crash causing deregistration. They have so much microstepping, the steppers are nearly silent. The main noise coming from this printer is caused by the fans. That silence has a price though because it takes very little force to stop the head. Also the fixed leveling may wind up being more of a hindrance than a solution. I may eventually convert mine to a 5 point level since I plan on changing the print surface from BuiltTak to PEI. Out of the box, there are 9 fixed tram points on the bed.
    Another issue, and more major IMO, is there is no downward fan on the nozzle. This probably caused the problems with the head crash using PLA since PLA seems to curl up causing the head to catch on the print. You can add a fan but it seems that the port on the extruder head is ON/OFF only. There is discussion of this issue on the Raise3D forum.
    I would say these issues are minor and have not affected me yet. I have been getting fantastic prints with it but I know it may require some user mods to make it truly fantastic. I am prepared to make those modifications as needed and I knew that prior to buying it. If you want something with this big build volume but don't want to mess with it out-of-the-box, I would wait for the next revision of the Raise3D or buy a TAZ 6. I have a Lulzbot Mini and a friend who has a TAZ 6. Those are fantastic printers but my friend has been impressed with the print quality from my N2. I bought my N2 right after the Kickstarter ended. I think these guy are going to be a contender going forward.

    If the bed is not level front-to-back, but the print starts well, wouldn't the filament at the back squeeze together just a tiny bit more, eventually leveling out? In my experience, if a print fails because the bed is not level, it fails at the first layer. It wouldn't knock over Pikachu at layer 200. Please tell me if I'm missing something.

    Joel I hate the be "that guy" but it seems like you're trying to spin this disaster as all positives since you got it for free. I'm not sure I would rave about a printer that had lousy setup instructions, a dead SD card and prints that get knocked over by the second extruder. I've been wanting to see some reviews on that beast but from observing what my friends have gone through and their forums, it's a bear to make work reliably. Looking forward to your updates tho

      Hey Paul. I wanted to make sure I got the chance to reply to your comment. First, thank you for your honest feedback and criticisms. I appreciate you taking the time to watch what I produce and leave me some words. I don't think calling this a disaster is fair, at least not yet. I'm still troubleshooting with Raise3D and trying to get the machine all dialed in. You're right, I think there were things in the beginning with the quick start guide and the USB stick not containing what the guide said it would. I didn't use the right words in the video, and for that I'm sorry. I'll take your words to heart and do my best to have a more unbiased update video in the future.

    • @paulbussiere1997

      Hey Joel,
      I appreciate you responded to my comment. Text sometimes makes things come off blunt/mean/snide. I hope you didn't take it that way. Some printers just deserve criticism for not performing to the hype out of the box. I know you want to be fair but think of the newbie that sees this review...you know 3D printers inside and out. Imagine how frustrated they would be if they had to resolve so many problems from the get go! That's my view. I can't afford those cool new toys so my Ultimaker Original runs nearly non stop making BB-8 parts. A Raise3D looks like an amazing printer to do the larger pieces....and once you have a chance to sort all the issues out, collect your thoughts and opinions...well, I look forward to hearing them! [high 5]

      You mean there is no such thing as a PNP printer? haha... I spend 3 hours fixing my gmax out of the box (loose and missing screws, slightly bent hot end carriage, unlevel bed etc). Since that Its producing the best quality prints ive ever seen (next to my FFCP). They all take time to get working, or working right. You need to upgrade to an E3d hotend on your gmax . Its a big quality change :)

    • @3DPrintingNerd

      In The Lab WAIT, really? E3D on the gMax makes a huge difference? Ooohhhh

    • @InTheLab3d
      @InTheLab3d 8 лет назад

      I think so... I think its a more consistent element, and I get a smoother part texture than the stock hotend... I notice a lot less "fingernail friction" with the E3d... of course you need to print a new BLtouch bracket, and a new fan (the hotend is longer than the stock). Its a cheap add on for sure... Also, i emailed you a few days about a laser mod I may be able to help you out on if you want it :) hit me up on email

    If the bed is not leveled I would only create issues with the first layers.
    Please check if Z lift/hop is enabled.
    To me this sounds just like the nozzle is not lifted during non-print moves.
    To the tubes/bowden
    These are important. Right now the filament is sometimes loose somtimes tight.
    Strongly depending on where the printhead is moving.
    This can cause issues an artifacts in the print.
    Mybe the printer is build strong enough to reduce that impact...
    You could also check if the tube is really made form PTFE/Teflon, which it should be.
    Any random plastic tube is not slippery enough in the inside to guide the filament nicely
    Good luck

    I've got a few question for you , when it come to big pieces , wouldn't it be better to print it in a few pieces instead of a big one ? and then glue them together , how much of electricity does it consume ? or would it be cheaper to do it on a cnc machine whit plastic pieces , i am asking these because it seems to come to all sorts of problems when you print big pieces ?

    Even if the bed wasn't level front to back, as long as it has printed a few layers that doesn't really matter anymore, so that's just a plain wrong conclusion. In other words: That's not why your print was knocked off, and also not why the nozzle thumps/touches the infill.
    Unless of course the build plate actually changes levelling as it moves...

      I did come across the flashforge dreamer, which really looks to give a lot of value for money (wifi printing, dual extruder, ability to print pla and abs for only around $1000!) but then I read they are also a closed system, and require some finetuning, and the resolution is slightly lower compared to the zortrax.

    Great video as usual Joel. I have to say that while some of the issues are things you have to deal with on other machines as well, to have that many issues and fails on a machine costing as much as this one is completely unacceptable. I'd guess they can afford great support due to the high cost of the printer. In terms of large print fails alone how would you measure it against your other large printers?

    3500 for a printer that doesn't work?LOL. The Sindoh or Zortax are way better machines for much less. That is the problem with reviewrs who get to a certain point were they can be bought. This video made it beyond obvious, everything fails but it's the best print I've ever had. SMDH

    Hi There!
    How is this printer treating you so far? I'm looking into buying one. How do you feel about it now?

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  7 лет назад

      +Greg Tracz on a plane right, so words are a bit short. Still an awesome machine. I don't use the dual extruder so I've moved the right nozzle out of the way. Steppers have plenty of torque, and if print starts to curl a bit the head will move the build plate before skipping a step. It's crazy. Wifi printing is cool and they keep updating their slicer. I run a lot of PLA through the machine. The bed is an absolute pain to level and I still wish it had auto bed leveling. Once level it stays pretty level. Some in the community have added Bondtech extruders and a BLTouch to the machine. I may end up going that route.

    So this is the best quality printer that doesn't work? Why do you keep saying how great this model is when none of the prints has completed properly? Shouldn't a printer that comes preassembled also be ready to print properly when you take it out of the box?

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 лет назад +1

      +steve c I've had quite a few prints succeed now. the loose screws that contributed to the initial failures are all right now, and the machine is running really well. Sadly, we aren't there yet with all pre-assembled printers. Most still require configuring and care before printing can happen.

    This is such an epic fail that I really should warn everyone that thinks about buying it!
    OK, the GOOD: Good looks, great idea, good concept, love the fact that has a graphical interface on the machine, DONE
    The BAD: Everything basically.
    - The bed leveling... a joke.
    - Build quality, well Chinese... mine was assembled by a drunk one! Lot's of improvisation.
    - The touch screen, otherwise fantastic idea, it's very unresponsive
    - The ON/OFF switch on the back of the machine near the bottom. So, every time you power on-off you have to bend down to the floor.
    - Documentation misleading, but mainly nonexistent. Even the most important stuff is left to the user guesswork
    - When using a acrylic cover it gets scratched from the filament and bends the filament. The more brittle filament like carbon fibre reinforced breaks every single time.
    - The cooling fans on booth extruders are working nonstop. Even ot he one that is not used. They are very noisy, ...very!
    - The cooling fan in the driver/main electronics box is awfully laud. It sound as it's vibrating against something
    - Oh yeah the main Z-axis ball-screw comes totally unscrewed. Ant this IS AN ISSUE, despite someone says that the weight of the bed itself holds the building platform in place. A JOKE, obviously. As the ball nut rotates with the screw and that means different height of the build platform
    But this are more or less "cosmetic" issues, right? But the following one is a deal breaker!!
    - The X and Y axis are NOT PERPENDICULAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Of course with a calibration cube (20x20x10mm) you could not notice it, but this printer is for a big stuff, right?! So while printing a bigger squared part of 150x150 (x-y) I noticed that the angles are not 90deg and the sides of the square were 2,5mm apart!!! ARE YOU KIDDING US Rised3D?!?!?!?!
    Bottom line this printer is USELESS for any precision-ish work at all. The printed parts will not fit together.
    - Communication with Raise3D is below every critics! They delayed the answer and the resolution of the problems and blamed local reseller!!
    I would forgive them if they would admit the mistake and come with a acceptable resolution, but no luck.
    SO TO EVERY ONE LOOKING TO BUY THIS 3D PRINTER I WOULD SUGGEST TO LOOK ELSEWHERE. Well if the fact that you have to disassemble a new machine and start over with no documentation whatsoever, doesn't bother you... well go for it. The idea behind this printer is good. The execution and the communication with Raise3D is AWFUL .
    And yes, I give them 20+ days to fix this issue, so I give them plenty of time to address this issue

    Hi , after seeing all your videos on riase 3D n plus , I just went and buy one . I am designing some air ducts so need bigger bed . Now after 2 weeks really got disappointed by this printer . This printer is a biggest failure in ABS . I have almost tried around 1 kg material on this printer and still now didn't got a results. Now you said that you got good support raise 3d , but I am not able to get that as well in this . Every day I get a mail from a guys to try something new . If you find out a way to print a big part in ABS please share so that I can also do the same before I return this

    So to get this straight.. One nozzle is lower than the other causing it to knock over prints... FAIL... Bed clips in the manual didnt work.. FAIL... bowden tubes it says to use caused PLA jams, FAIL.. SD card was blank, FAIL.. You have not showed us a single print that worked yet - and this thing is $4500AUD - And its "one of the best printers you have used" OMG. dude give it back - buy one with your OWN money and then ill believe you.. Sorry if this sounds harsh but FFS . Same with the Seemecnc - catastrophic failure yet thumbs up..
    And to counter attack the fanboys - No i do not care that this was free and I don't have one. At this price point it should damn near make you a coffee and give you a back rub - not constantly fail.

    Wow, I am a little disappointed at this printer. I was hoping for that sort of money it would come close to commanding the price tag. I am a little stumped as to how you can consider it one of the best machines you have used when you have used so many and it had such a terrible start?? If that was down to the print quality you were seeing (a close up would be nice... :) then I think we know with tweaking most of us can get that sort of layer consistency and once we have our machines dialed in, then really, it's as reliable as this.
    I can appreciate yes, they have adjusted all the flow and step rates to be perfect for that machine, so you are also paying for that time and research - but.. but.. really, for that price tag you should not have to be on the phone to them, or twitter or anything really, not before you have a few successful prints out of it. I'm sure they have great support, and for that price they better damn well lol. I mean let's be real here, it's an enclosed dual extruder with a wifi and LCD capability, using threaded rods, at the base level, all other gimmicks or mods aside, essentially that's what it is. It's not a revolution of design, it's not really anything I can see that is WOW I so need to buy that, besides the wifi capability, which I don't have directly on my printers yet (I do have networked printers with duet boards, so they go into a router and I wifi print to them, but printing direct to the device would be nice)
    As for the dual extrusion, I don't think it's a gimmick so i'm all for that, i've been using it for 5 years, it was on the first printer I bought and I bought it for that reason. The nozzles on that were exactly the same and since then, every dual extrusion machine I've built or bought I've used that principle of the nozzle on one side being higher than the other - it's sort of necessary unless you want that grinding across the top surface - it does take some tuning tho, so I hope they made the nozzle height adjustment an easy procedure. I don't think any printer with dual I've ever used didn't require a little tweaking to get the levels right, especially if your build plate is a little convex or concaved - in which case the warped bed will cause nozzles to drag at certain points on the bed.
    I am looking at this machine, and it's hard to see where the money is - but that being said I have not seen the software, and well if it is that good then sure you can increase the price for the luxury of having great software. The LCD screen on the machine is a nice touch, but that also being said, is there an option to turn it off while printing? I don't know if I'd want it on continually for a 100 hour print. But for $3299 U.S or for me AU$4340.. I think it might just be a touch high in the price range, I would think more at the U.S$2500
    P.S Where did you get that Tron shirt? I want one!!

    • @Pile_of_carbon
      @Pile_of_carbon 8 лет назад

      Its Voodoo
      Seems so. Resin may be pretty fast, but it's a messy process and you can't make functional parts. If I ran a business and had need of some rapid prototyping, I'd probably go for a large FDM printer for the versatility. With nylon on one spool and a water solvable filament on the other I'm guessing you could make some pretty neat stuff.
