I finally got my hand on the Ultimaker 2+ and I'm blown away by the quality, the ease of use and the reliability of this machine. No automatic calibration, no dual extruder, a bit on the expensive side but at the end it just work.
I had this printer for about 6 month also, I want to add to what you said few things: its a really good printer one of the top however its been out for a while now, recent technology printers have touch screen, Auto calibration and WiFi. so none of that is available to Ultimaker 2+, so what does it add? Reliability and Quality and the nozzle change. its easy and great printer for PLA just print without an issue and the glass bed is self release when it cool down. ABS on the other hand is a bit tricky and depend on the shape it might warp without raft or proper adhesion. Support on this printer is great, its easy to fix and adjust. the worse about this printer is the filament, its 2.85mm and that being said this size mostly available in Europe so its really expensive in the USA, you can't use any filament without having problems, only few limited brand names like colorfabb and matterhacker brands and those are expensive, so the advertise for this printer that its open filament is not 100% true. slicer: Cura is a great free slicer probably the best in the market and work with this printer very well it actually created for this printer, that being said many seasoned users like Simplify3d and it works with this printer but require some tweaking and adjusting to get the same quality as Cura give you on this printer. does it worth $2500, I don't know, I love this printer I just have newer brands that give me better quality and resolutions with same price.
the ultimaker 2+ we have at the office has SO many print fails....it's ridiculous my 400 euro flashforge works way more reliable Edit: I found it it's due to Cura. I used the exact same object in simplify 3d and it came out 10 times better
Hi Joel!! Pretty spot on review. I was happy to get a closer look at it again at the meet up. It's such a solid machine, dependable and worth the money. hi5!!
You should do a comparison between ultimaker and the prusa i3. I am curious to know which achieves better quality at best settings! You would for sure be the first one to do such an apples to apples with this two machines...
Even though my UM2 is nearly 10 years old by now, and going 7 strong years as an UM2+ with Olson block, and the past 4 years with a Bondtech extruder and Olson Ruby nozzle I still use it today. It is by todays standards a quite obsolete machine, but it is robust as a tank that just keeps on going. There is only one thing about it from factory that bothers me that I changed recently, and that is that the extruder and filament roll is on the back, they should have been on the side, but I guess design got before functionality on this at Ultimaker.
Yay! I've been waiting for this. =D I bought an UM2 and added the + package. Imo it's a beast when it comes to accuracy and speed. It lacks some of the functions that comes as standard on many newer printers (automatic bed levelling for example), but I'm ok with that.
3D Printing Nerd Couldn't agree more. I have a couple of Flashforge Finders at work and even with their automatic levelling I had to fine tune the plate anyway. I hope Ultimaker release a kit for multiple materials, which is sort of the only thing I could wish for from the UM2+.
It's cool to see you finally get a chance to review this amazing printer. I can't believe I've had my Ultimaker 2 for for over 2 years now. It's still churning out amazing prints after all this time.
I know you have reviewed the wanhao duplicator i3, are you ever going to review any of their other printers? specifically I would love to see your review of the duplicator s5 large format printer.
I have the option to add the "+" upgrade to an ultimaker 2 extended i got for 300 used. Do you think another 300 bucks for the upgrade would make this older printer worth 600 bucks total? Or are there better 3d pronters oit there that i could buy for 600 or under.
I would love to see a Prusa i3 MK2 and Ultimaker 2+ shoot out or comparison. In order to show what the benefits are or are not for the price difference between the two. Also enjoyed the video, keep up the good work!
The thing I like most about the Prusa Mk2, in comparison, is that the build area is 30% bigger. It was not a much of a consideration when I purchased the Prusa but it makes such a difference when you need to produce a lot of parts or just having that extra 2.5 inches on the diagonal for the long part that you do not now have to split.
Hi Joel. I think most would agree the ultimaker is a great printer and I would love to have one but is it worth the money? Can I get the same quality cheeper?
Hey Joel, great review. I must say that the ultimaker 2 + really improves on ultimaker 2. with the upgrade feeder and Olsen block, makes the printer even greater and is really worth the upgrade if you already own a ultimaker 2 like me. Keep up the great videos
Have you ever thought of doing a top 3 (maybe 5) printers in a few different price categories. Maybe have it in the description, or on a blog. Update it when you think a new review bumps one off. Or Maybe even a "printers to avoid" list. #highfive
Hey Joel, Thank you so so much. I watch your videos all the time and a while ago i saw one of your videos and you told us about the matterhackers withinreach competions. I loved the idea of the compettion so a friend and i decided to design for the competition. aaannndddd We won the youth competition! If it wasen't for you we wouldnt have won. Thank you!
Great review Joel! think you touched on the details well. The feeding filaments portion has been an issue for me on and off as well would be nice if they made that a bit less aggressive.. can't wait for your next review!
Real problem comes when you are not allowed to print more than 8 hours straight nor overnight. That's when you need to keep a good balance between quality and speed caue for wherever reason its not duable to split the model cauuse you want it in one piece. It's hard to find this info with Ultimaker 2+
Hey Joel, two questions: 1) Have you used the extended version? I was curious if the extra hardware has added any compromises/issues with the machine's performance or if it's effectively the same, just taller. 2) How do you generally decide what printers to use for various projects? I'm sure some have features that match up with what you're trying to accomplish, but I'm also sure that for many "generic" prints, that there's a lot of overlap in which printer is suitable. Is it just a dice roll or do you have your own system? Would love to hear more. Thanks! #HighFive
+Mike Brum As for extended, I haven't, but I've heard it's essentially just taller. As for which printer to use, it's usually whatever can print the size and material I need. Lately it's been this machine, the Průša i3 mk2, and the Raise3D N2+ #ReturnFive
Good review Joel but i have a question... Can the Ultimaker 2+ use flexible filament (like ninja flex ) and if yes can the print quality be deteriorate by that. #Highfive PS QUESTION+: when you do a review (like this one) do you write a scripte ? (i'm asking that because i think i'm going to make reviews for my printers)
I don't know about the FF Creator pro but I got 3 UM2+. The machine and the software are very user friendly IMO (you can set up the expert mode in CURA for more control over your prints). Print quality is very good as long as you know what you're doing (same for all printers haha). This printer is fast and accurate. Plus there is a great community ready to help you on the official forum for any questions you may have.
The TAZ6 has a much larger build volume (If I remember right) so for me it would depend on what size I'm wanting to build. The Ultimaker DOES have an enclose-able space though...
SO other than the 2" difference in print bed size is the quality comparable or is one better than the other? I'm planning to build game terrain with it so I'm not sure how much difference a .03 mm layer height will matter but since this is my first venture in 3D printing I want to make a good choice up front. Thanks so much for your great videos and your help so far in getting me "educated" on 3D printing.
I've been using this printer for serveral times and honestly I dont recommend you to purchase one with its price. Some disavantages including: noise, no auto-leveling, unrealiable transmission system, no filament detector sensor, difficult to maintain and replace the nozzle...
IDK I keep jumping around on which printer to get but I need your help guys. I really just want a high quality 3d printer that works right out of the box. I was interested in the Wanhao Duplicator 6 or the zortrax m200 or the ROBO3d R1+ . Please help
Really nice video Joel! Ultimaker i think is one of my favorite, i call Ultimaker the Apple of smartphone a bit overprice but work well and easy to use 3d printer!
Yeah make sense about is a close system i was, thinking about nice design plug and play and a bit more expensive of other printer but i anyway love it ;)
You know, i own a Zortrax M200 and it´s a plug and play too, really easy to use but it´s true that Ultimaker is better because you can use different materials and it has the best design. Then why i bought the Zortrax M200? i....don´t...know lol I think that it´s not necessary to buy these expensive 3D printers, you can get a nice one with less money like the Flux 3D (which i also own), the design it´s simple and elegant, the print quality it´s almost similar to the Zortrax M200 and it has different functions like Laser engraving, Drawing and 3D scan (3D scan is still in beta tho)...oh! and you can print via Wi-Fi ! It´s just my opinion :p
I have a Prusa i3 Mk3 on order, but won't have it in hand until March (or April, or May, or ????). I've been thinking on cancelling my order and moving over to the Ultimaker 2+ or 3. What are your thoughts? Will I get more bang for my buck by just waiting for the Prusa, or will I have just as many features and upgradability with the Ultimaker? I know that Ultimaker is almost 3 times as much as the Prusa. TY....
+John Christensen glad to help! This isn't saying Ultimakers are bad machines at all, I'm just saying you get SO MUCH printer for your money with a Prusa. Same can be said for a cr10 usually. I also hear people like the Ender 2.
ultimaker, prusa MK2, ultimaker, prusa MK2... I choose... PRUSA MK2! because its cheaper, works exceptionally well, and it would be my first 3D printer, + it's got that cool multi filament set up coming out, you'll have to do a video for us on that!
***** yea I get what yea mean, Prusa i3 mk2 kit is probably going to be what I go for. If I have an extra 200$ to burn ( doubt it ) I'll just buy assembled. Thanks for your input!
Why nobody talks about printing times?. Tired of seeing how wonderful this printer is. But in real world good quality it mostly means increasing printing times.... especially with complex models where there is loads of overhangs. You dont talk about any of this. I Wish sombody would....
Great video Joel. Agree all around but I am biased as this is the machine that I have as well. Microswiss(sp?) nozzles, am I missing the link in the description to their products? Thanks again for the great video.
nothing bad to report huh? What about the fact that its a manually leveling bed? Most printers these days are automatic. Don't you think manual bed level printers are kinda lame? Especially for a 2k printer. Gettin better joel.
+Andy C I'm a bit split. I know quite a few people that HATE automatic bed leveling systems. I'm of the camp that likes automatic bed leveling and originally I thought I would miss it here. The assisted manual system Ultimaker has is incredibly easy to use and I've yet to have any first layer issues. Believe me, I'm lazy I would prefer automation, but in this case, it's not bad at all. Also, thanks! I'm trying, man. Trying to "quality over quantity".
It is honestly not a issue since you almost never need to adjust it, it is literally months of printing between the times I do a bed leveling on my Ultimakers... Also a "true" leveled bed will always be better than a active compensation that rely on the Z stepping up and down during moves.
I did think about that. I tried to base this review on the performance of a machine, and the price itself doesn't affect the performance. If someone is interested in this machine, they will find the price in their search. My plan is when I do machine comparisons - such as an Ultimaker 2+ vs Zortrax m200 vs Wanhao Duplicator 6 - THEN price will come into play. For a pure machine review based on functionality, I dunno, I think I may refrain from the price part of the game. It's just some thoughts. What do you think?
As a heavy user of 3D printers I would really like to see a price vs performance on any printer that is reviewed. That way an overall baseline can be established. My thoughts. Please don't take this as negative critisism. The video, as always, was great.
jd52wtf Ah okay, I see where you are coming from. How do a determine a price baseline and performance baseline? For some, the price of the Ultimaker machines is okay and they feel they get a great machine at a great price. Others think it's too pricey but it's still a great machine. How can say which of those two groups is right and which is wrong?
It would be a relative scale from machine to machine. For instance.... you can get a Prusa I3 completely assembled that has more features than this and provides comparable print quality for $900. Much less than the price tag of $2500 for this unit. The Prusa I3 in my estimation has a much higher performance/feature to cost ratio. Make sense?
Nice review! I really like the Ultimaker 2+. But I can not find a easy way (I don't want to use any chemicals on my plate) to make it built using ABS? Do you have any suggestion(s)?
I recommend printing feet for the machine since the corners will absolutely murder any surface the printer is placed on and it also takes away some vibrations. www.thingiverse.com/thing:1764958
If you can afford it - both. both are awesome. if not, depends on what materials you are wanting to print, and print size you're wanting, that sort of thing
This is the first review I have watched where I call Shenanigans' . I have this printer because of you and Jerry. Your review seemed more of a "sponsored review" than your typical review. Just my opinion. I don't know how else to explain my point of view. But those of you who follow, you might know what I mean. I'm not dissing you at all, I love your content. Keep up the good content, and don't succumb to the bullshit...... High Five man.
Wait a sec - THIS one you're calling shenanigans on? Out of all the reviews I've done? Oh man. Honestly, THIS is one of the reviews I am most proud of. I even wrote a script to make sure I got all the words out I wanted to say. Everything I said on camera is exactly how I feel, and I'll have to give them printer back at some point. I do appreciate your comment, and I'm SUPES happy you like my content. I'll keep going if you'll keep watching! :) #ReturnFive
+Voxel Lab Right, I approached this as a hardware review. Ultimaker provides a branded Cura but it's not required to use the machine, and in fact I did many prints using Simplify3D.
I finally got my hand on the Ultimaker 2+ and I'm blown away by the quality, the ease of use and the reliability of this machine. No automatic calibration, no dual extruder, a bit on the expensive side but at the end it just work.
Thanks, I know this is an old review, but one of these just arrived at my makespace so I appreciated your summary.
Thanks for watching! I still have it - it's a powerhouse. The thing just keeps going. I did get some PEI for the build plate from Printed Solid.
I had this printer for about 6 month also, I want to add to what you said few things:

does it worth $2500, I don't know, I love this printer I just have newer brands that give me better quality and resolutions with same price.
Your editing game in this video is freaking great keep it up!
THANK YOU! I tried to really step it up!
the ultimaker 2+ we have at the office has SO many print fails....it's ridiculous

You're gonna get a letter from a chuck asking for a sticker or two. Gotta ask for a maker coin too.
"pew pew"
Wow, they really did nerf Tracer's firerate.

I honestly don't miss the auto bed leveling here because they've done the manual leveling right.

Couldn't agree more. I have a couple of Flashforge Finders at work and even with their automatic levelling I had to fine tune the plate anyway.
I hope Ultimaker release a kit for multiple materials, which is sort of the only thing I could wish for from the UM2+.
Buildtak sticks great but it is a bugger to get short and flat prints off the bed.
Still love my UM2+ ... Especially now it's been upgraded with the Bondtech Dual drive extruder ;)
Have you ever filmed a long review to realize afterwards that the cucumber has left the salad?
yup. always.
It's cool to see you finally get a chance to review this amazing printer. I can't believe I've had my Ultimaker 2 for for over 2 years now. It's still churning out amazing prints after all this time.

Are you really comparing Prusa Mk2 and Ultimaker 2+? I ran the numbers and yours are exaggerated. Mk2 is 11mm longer diagonal, not 2.5 inches.
TheZenphobic ko
on, off, on, off,... hahaha love it
This is an incredibly expensive 3d printer and has a kinda small build volume. I suggest the creality cr-10 (once they get that violation issue fixed)
Hi Joel. I think most would agree the ultimaker is a great printer and I would love to have one but is it worth the money? Can I get the same quality cheeper?
Nice! We would like to hear a bit about using PVA as support material, plz.
Did you see the commercial for the new ultimaker
Hey Joel, great review. I must say that the ultimaker 2 + really improves on ultimaker 2. with the upgrade feeder and Olsen block, makes the printer even greater and is really worth the upgrade if you already own a ultimaker 2 like me. Keep up the great videos
Why does the nozzle not feed through the material?
What should I change to prepare a decent thing?
Pls help
I don’t understand the question, what do you mean?
@@3DPrintingNerd the filament does not come through the nozzle.
You know in China you can get a true ultimaker 2 and 2 extended for 400-500 dollars. (I have one its original with ultimaker parts)
Have you ever thought of doing a top 3 (maybe 5) printers in a few different price categories. Maybe have it in the description, or on a blog. Update it when you think a new review bumps one off.
Or Maybe even a "printers to avoid" list.
#highfive
+Rod Line I plan on having something like this once I can get my website up and going!
3D Printing Nerd Thanks for the info.
Hey Joel,
Thank you so so much. I watch your videos all the time and a while ago i saw one of your videos and you told us about the matterhackers withinreach competions. I loved the idea of the compettion so a friend and i decided to design for the competition. aaannndddd We won the youth competition! If it wasen't for you we wouldnt have won.
Thank you!
HOT DANG THAT'S INCREDIBLE!!!!!
Thanks!!!
have you seen the wanhao dup 6? the duplicator six is a white-labelled Ultimaker. only difference is that is is fully metal and it costs $1000.
+A fairly priced lukewarm basket of chicken wings I have one, and that's not the only difference. :)
The Wanhao Duplicator 6 is NOT a white label ultimaker, it is a cheap chinese mix between Zortrax look and Ultimaker electronics made by Wanhao...
How long does it take to heat up? And any secrets about printing from an sd card? Still waiting it says “reading card” after 10 min....
Great review Joel! think you touched on the details well. The feeding filaments portion has been an issue for me on and off as well would be nice if they made that a bit less aggressive.. can't wait for your next review!
hello,
i would like to know what is the name of the track when you were talking about the LEDs On Off, On Off ? :D
No way this printer is worth more than twice an original Prusa
Real problem comes when you are not allowed to print more than 8 hours straight nor overnight. That's when you need to keep a good balance between quality and speed caue for wherever reason its not duable to split the model cauuse you want it in one piece. It's hard to find this info with Ultimaker 2+
Hey Joel, two questions:
1) Have you used the extended version? I was curious if the extra hardware has added any compromises/issues with the machine's performance or if it's effectively the same, just taller.
2) How do you generally decide what printers to use for various projects? I'm sure some have features that match up with what you're trying to accomplish, but I'm also sure that for many "generic" prints, that there's a lot of overlap in which printer is suitable. Ok, you replied to that in like 60 seconds. That's crazy. Good crazy though. Thanks!
hey joe happy fall
Good review Joel but i have a question...
Can the Ultimaker 2+ use flexible filament (like ninja flex ) and if yes
can the print quality be deteriorate by that.

PS QUESTION+: when you do a review (like this one) do you write a scripte ?
(i'm asking that because i think i'm going to make reviews for my printers)
How does the print quality and user friendliness compare with the Flashforge Creator Pro?
Thanks for the cool video!
I think the printer quality is higher and it give a better user experience than the FFCP!
I don't know about the FF Creator pro but I got 3 UM2+. The machine and the software are very user friendly IMO (you can set up the expert mode in CURA for more control over your prints). Print quality is very good as long as you know what you're doing (same for all printers haha). This printer is fast and accurate. You seem to give this printer high marks. However, if you had to choose between it or the LulzBot TAZ 6, which would you choose?
The TAZ6 has a much larger build volume (If I remember right) so for me it would depend on what size I'm wanting to build. The Ultimaker DOES have an enclose-able space though...
SO other than the 2" difference in print bed size is the quality comparable or is one better than the other? +GeekyTimePals the Ultimaker worked right out of the box, though if that's not in your price range, I would recommend looking into the Průša i3 mk2.
I own the Zortrax m200 and it works great for me.
+Jason Hayes I do as well and I haven't had any issues with it.
Thanks for the advice ! #highfive
I have the Zortrax m200 and it works like a treat still very happy with it (and I got it thanks to your reviews 3d Printing Nerd, so thanks! #highfive
Really nice video Joel! Ultimaker i think is one of my favorite, i call Ultimaker the Apple of smartphone a bit overprice but work well and easy to use 3d printer!
Actually Zortrax is the Apple of 3D printers, the price is high and it´s a closed system (you can only use their filaments and their slicer) lol
Then why i bought the Zortrax M200? i....don´t...know lol
I think that it´s not necessary to buy these expensive 3D printers, you can get a nice one with less money like the Flux 3D (which i also own), the design it´s simple and elegant, the print quality it´s almost similar to the Zortrax M200 and it has different functions like Laser engraving, Drawing and 3D scan (3D scan is still in beta tho)...oh! and you can print via Wi-Fi !
It´s just my opinion :p

ultimaker or prusa?
***** yea I get what yea mean,
Prusa i3 mk2 kit is probably going to be what I go for. If I have an extra 200$ to burn ( doubt it )
I'll just buy assembled. Thanks for your input!
Liked just for the - On and off - On, and off...
The video effects are not needed. But great 👍 video 😎
have you tried 1.75mm filament in it yet? You might need to insert an extra tube into the bowden, maybe something more.
Hello Joel, would it be possible to know the time it took to print the objects you presented? Thank you!
How does it compare versus the zortrax M200 ?
+Erwan Daniel the abilities of each printer are incredible. I'll get a comparison done at some point.
Thanks :)
I ask you that I bought a Zortrax M200 2 days ago and i'm glad that a make a good choice ^^
Can't believe your editing and presentation was this good even 3 years ago, great job on this video!

You forgot to mention the price point. In my opinion the biggest negative feature of the printer.
I've heard the Fleks3D plates can take ABS without anything else added to it.
You can print with ABS with just the right kind of glue stick on the build plate (Tesa Eco Easy Stick).
Erik Cederberg Thanks. Will that produce odd smell?
3D Printing Nerd Thanks I will try that out.
I recommend printing feet for the machine since the corners will absolutely murder any surface the printer is placed on and it also takes away some vibrations. www.thingiverse.com/thing:1764958
joel your almost at 40,000 subs...AND IM ONE✋
I'm two.
lol
I've been thinking of getting one for a while.
Is it a fast printer, compared to others?
Chill there Markiplier
Prusa i3 mk2 or Ultimaker 2+? Which should I buy?
If you can afford it - both. both are awesome. if not, depends on what materials you are wanting to print, and print size you're wanting, that sort of thing
review m300
I would LOVE to, but, Zortrax would have to send me one :)
Why don't you review makerbot
+mike mun they would need to send one to me so I could review it. So far, that hasn't happened.
had mine for five weeks now I think it's great but I'm only a novice, the l,e,d's can be dimmed from 0 to 100 percent. High Five

has it a buld in cam to wach your prints
:) #ReturnFive
wooow Joel, never been so dissapointed with a review failing to mention the price
high five + hug😊
on and off
on and off
you didn't cover the software
+Voxel Lab Right, I approached this as a hardware review. Ultimaker provides a branded Cura but it's not required to use the machine, and in fact I did many prints using Simplify3D.
it's a reprap
print another eagle😆
ball bomb brings me back when i used to play mario 64.....good times
weird name
i was the 60th like
i've always wanted an ultimaker, i just have a makerbot replicator 5th generation.
JOEL RULES
YOU RULE!
Thanks, high five
Onviously price is a downside - you can buy two 3D printers that print just a bit slower and worse, for the same cash.
Good review. High Five
