Howdy gentle humans, I've heard from you that sentimental items (and books!) are the hardest things to declutter. Why do you think sentimental items are so hard to let go of? I want to help you let these things go when you're ready! xoxo Diana

These were great questions to ask. Some part of me knows that “when in doubt, throw out,” but when we declutter we really are poking at our relationship with our objects and with ourselves. That’s why know what to ask of yourself is so helpful. I really appreciate it.

Thank you for the most helpful video I have seen on decluttering books. I am retiring in 4 months and half my very extensive library (at least 4000 books) is at my work place; it will not fit into my home so I am facing a very major declutter! Thank you for your thoughts.

I recommend getting a Little Free Library, and stocking other LFLs with the books. Being a LFL steward is a fun way to meet neighbors. If you can't put up a permanent LFL, you can put up a movable one that might work. And maybe you can leave a bookshelf of books in your workplace break area and establish a Leave One, Take One exchange. I enjoyed that sharing with co-workers in one workplace. Enjoy your retirement! As for books you want to keep, consider getting ebooks, or see if your local library has them. You will feel reassured that those favorites are still available to you.

Truth time: I’d been avoiding this video because I 1) assumed it wasn’t for me, and 2) felt a teeny bit afraid. I was an English major; I’m a writer; and if I collect anything, it’s books. Sooo, what I wanted to say (having finally watched this), is thank you for this gentle guide. I found it useful-not overly harsh, not accusatory, and certainly not “eh, who needs books.” I found some really useful tips here, and I appreciate the non-judginess that allows me to prune effectively without feeling bad about what I choose to keep. That was a feat, Diana! To hear tips about decluttering books from a book lover made all the difference. I’m so glad I finally watched this. 💚

Robin, I've been avoiding replying back... it only took me a month to do so! But mainly because I was so deeply flattered and glad that some of my learnings could resonate with you. It's always just astounding to hear when others get what you are going through, and we can help each other along the way. Thanks so much for being open. Really glad to "know" ya across the internet! haha hope you're thriving xoxo Diana

i have an ever-expanding unread digital list/library, however.... i'm thankful that i don't have too many physical books.
one day, i'll have them neatly organized all together but for now they live on different shelves, in stacks, little communities and that's okay.
your color grouping was especially a wonderful touch. (:

I hold (held?) physical books so, so sacred especially as a teen... it was my form of mental and emotional escape day in and out. My reverence made me feel like I was "respecting" my books/friends, and as a family, we never got rid of anything. It was a cultural thing, even though we lived in a tiny apartment with four people. It's taken a while for me to break out of that scarcity mentality and I think letting go of physical objects represents a willingness to detach from my past. xoxo Diana

@@SlowGaze I have just started a no-buy year and the thing I struggle with most is how to cope with difficult situations other than by shopping. It seems over the years shopping has become my default. So a video about ideas on how to self-care without buying things would be amazing!

@@isheeka2465 This one really hit home for me, because I have tried low-buys and short no buys before... and have been insanely inspired by @HannahLouisePoston here on YT. I would LOVE to support you and others who are trying to replace dyed-in-the-wool shopping habits with free or invigorating hobbies. That code switch is not easy, and I can attest to it! Best of luck with your no buy and let me know how it goes. Thank you so much xoxo Diana
