WHAT DECLUTTERING OVER HALF MY MAKEUP TAUGHT ME (An honest chat!)

  • It's part and parcel for me to pause, gaze inwards, and reflect on all my relatively-huge declutters from the past 6 months. I'm still on my personal minimalist journey, addressing my biggest trigger: makeup! I don't want to ever return to my destructive habit of over-consuming beauty products, only to declutter them, barely used, as if I were renting or testing them. It's wasteful on so many fronts. I want to promote more insightful content here on the 'tubes! Thanks for watching!

      I've been doing a lot of examination of my makeup and trying to get to a more minimal stash of products. I've found that having several options for each product category was stressful. I found myself using what I thought would expire first rather than what I wanted to use. I also paid close attention to how each product made me feel when I wore it. I gradually focused in on what I truly found myself enjoying and products I felt helped me look my best. Now I have a small bag of products and four brushes. I feel like I have so much more time in the day now that I'm not worrying over that next purchase. I previously spent an inordinate amount of time researching products. Now that I've curated a small bag of products that reliably make me feel presentable and content, I've moved on to other activities and feel much more fulfilled.

      @@sharonkimble715 I have one of each of these: powder foundation, color corrector, under eye concealer, face concealer, bronzer, blush, eye primer, mascara, brow pencil, and tinted lip balm. I have two small eye shadow palettes, one with six shades and one with eight shades. One is cool/neutral and one is warm. I just found what looks best in each category and eliminated everything else. I still enjoy makeup and putting on a "full face." I've just focused in one what I like best to create a reliably good makeup day. If I only have my favorites, then I'll always be happy with the outcome.

    Decluttering helped me realize that I can’t buy anyone else’s face. I visualize the makeup I want on my actual face before I buy now, and it helps separate the “tool” from the avoidant fantasy. And maybe this sounds weird, but I try to think of my relationship with makeup in terms of sand art or a zen garden (expressive and artistic, but impermanent). I think about how I felt wearing the look as I wash it off at night. Somehow, doing that has helped me remember that makeup is the means to the hobby or interest, not the hobby/interest in itself. Phew! Apologies for going on and on! TL;DR? I found all your thoughts here really interesting!😂

    • @SlowGaze
      @SlowGaze  3 года назад +2

      "I can’t buy anyone else’s face". Amazing, Robin!!! I'll practice using that as a mantra. I'm sure people who have distinct genetic makeup + don't see faces like theirs readily portrayed in the media, it's hard to not give in to buying a product even though it only works on a very, very different face. It's hard to be that honest with yourself, so you go gurl xoxo Diana

      wow, what a great and philosophical view of makeup! i love it! My favorite comment was that makeup is the means/tool to the hobby not the hobby itself. I'm going to remember that one! Artistry channels are helpful for that because a lot will say things like "use a light brown eyeshadow" instead of "I'm using this specific eyeshadow from _____" very helpful observation from you

    I have a tendency to watch lots of decluttering videos. And it serves as a sort of relaxation for me as well as encouragement to look into my own things and really analyze what I like and what I don’t. Also it shows me mini reviews of what people think about products and whether or not those align with my needs. Call it perverse if you will, but I’m intentional with what I spend my money on. And watching other people declutter items that I’m on the fence of purchasing really help me to gauge if something is right for me. And decluttering is another part of the research if I want to spend my dollar.

    AHHHH Thank you for this video. It’s only January and I’ve burned $2000+ at Sephora because I *need* to try this, maybe that product will tie everything together, maybe this lipstick will change my whole look… I need to get out this mentality. I actually got goosebumps when you talked about walking out with "the face I was meant to have" I love makeup and have very little to no shame regarding my enjoyment of it even though others have maybe tried to make me feel that way but what a beautiful way to look at the bare face! To me, it's a blank canvas, but you're right. It's the face God gave us that we were meant to have. I appreciate that comment so much. I will be thinking of that for years to come, no doubt.

    I challenged myself with a low buy for clothes/shoes last year and compensated by filling the void with makeup!
    I went from 4 eyeshadow palettes to 23! Watching RUclips Beauty influencers definitely played a big part in my beauty purchases and because I loved watching their content, I eagerly purchased their collaboration/merch to support!
    Before finding your channel, I was following some IG project panners who inspired me to stop unconsciously consuming and to actually use my existing makeup.
    I also started following a lot of Filipina - American influencers to delve deeper into my culture and nuances of being Filipina growing up in a westernized culture.

    Loved this video. I’m on a decluttering journey as well. For several years I was a Sephora Vib Rouge, I don’t know why I thought I ‘had to’ renew the status each year. To subtly boast? To feel top tier? To flash the shiny red rewards card when I shop? I don’t know. But I feel like it was such a waste on $$ and now that I’m a Beauty Insider, I don’t care LOL. I still browse the app here and there and maybe I’ll buy a skin care set that’s on sale/in my interest. Also one thing I don’t buy is highlighters anymore 🙈

    Listening to this while i did the dishes. I have experimented with minimalism for years now. When in comes to makeup i feel like i seem to buy alot of it when i gain weight. And when i did lose so much weight i tend to get rid of it. I now understand that me gaining weight and being uncomfortable with my own body made me hoard makeup to just simply make me feel better. I totally get what you were saying. I decluterred so much then last year i went back to my old ways again. Now im back to square one.

    Your content is so amazing and is so unique to the beauty space especially! I've been trying to pinpoint what exactly is so addicting (strong but appropriate word I think) about makeup? For me, it's exactly what you said. It's supposed to be easy, and there's such low barrier to entry. Meanwhile, more meaningful investments in oneself are often not easy and so much more arduous.

      Hi Liz, haha I can relate. I was in a cycle of buying things out of curiosity and excitement over novelty, which meant that a few weeks or months down the line, a declutter was due! It can be hard for others (like your husband) to stand if they're observing from afar, because the feelings of buying and purging are very real. It's taken me about six months on RUclips of sharing my journey to feel a *little* more in control of my decluttering cycle. Thanks for sharing and watching! xoxo Diana

    My tactics is to find one best product in each makeup category and then stick to it. It must be the "best" product for me, not for everyone. I have already found most of the products that I need (best concealer, best red lipstick etc) After finding the best product I go on a strict no-buy in this category. For ex. I found the best eyeshadow palette for myself and I haven't bought any eyeshadows ever since. In other categories I practice low buy.

    • @SlowGaze
      @SlowGaze  2 года назад

      This is such a great tactic and I aspire to be like you! I've had difficulty identifying my "best" products in the past and have made too many trials / errors trying to figure that out. I wanted to listen to what was working for others rather than listening to what really worked for me. Expensive mistakes. I love your mindful approach; thank you for sharing! xoxo Diana

    I really enjoyed this video, Diana, you and your videos are such a breath of fresh air! What really struck me is when you were talking about having a no-foundation makeup routine, but feeling like you can’t do that until you have perfect skin. I’ve always felt that way too, having struggled with acne throughout my teens and adult life, and I was getting frustrated that I couldn’t pan my blush and bronzer that I’ve had for years because I thought I’d have to do a whole face first (primer, foundation, powder etc). It was all or nothing because I thought that’s how I was “supposed to” wear make up unless I had perfect skin. But lately I’ve just been playing with blush, getting a bit more confident in applying it, and then doing my brows and sometimes mascara. I love the end result so much more than a full face, because it feels more like me :-) I’ll still wear foundation on occasion, but I don’t feel like I “have” to anymore. My skin (and me) are good enough. ❤️

    Sometimes people don’t like things because of color story. The formula is wonderful, but the color story doesn’t suit you. It may be just right for another person. I didn’t like the Natasha Denona Lila palette and the Natasha Denona Sunrise palette. Other people love those palettes. The same holds true for several Huda Beauty palettes. I’ve decluttered all of my Huda palettes. Many love her palettes. So, I don’t think it’s fair to presume that people want the makeup just because it’s free. They may just like it.

    5:18 Actually, some people do. There are reasons the rangers search some of the vehicles on the way out. (Just visited Petrified Forest NP. If you're driving a truck with a covered cab and unusually sturdy shocks, you're getting searched. Ditto the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, etc.)
