    Man, this was huge. Ive struggled with no buys and makeup for years but the concept of having my makeup serve the 80% me of every day, versus buying for all these eventualities that may never happen…. Yeah. I have so many fantasy selves that are rooted in the past that my giant collection of makeup no longer serves…. Thank you for this

    i really resonated with what you said about 'fantasy selves' being more of a facet of ourselves and that's it's ok to have items that reflect that around (so long as we don't lean in so hard that it compels us to buy for the sake of buying)

    So happy to see you back! I love the no buy journey and reflection. I find i can resist the urge to buy but i always find my makeup collection starts to have that call for newness. Still learning how to live with what i have instead of resenting it for being my only option

    • @SlowGaze
      @SlowGaze  2 года назад +1

      Ah, the resentment is real. It's strange how we can project all these things onto inanimate possessions. The biggest struggle is balancing our own psyche over and over again, staying the course, and doing it everyday, without beating ourselves up when we slip up. Take care and thanks for sharing! xoxo Diana

      i heavily relate to this, especially because i was in the project pan to new purchases pipeline for so long lol. i always feel the pressure to buy or try something new once i empty something, but gratefully i'm feeling that urge slow down in 2022

      Haha, language means so much! I find myself using terms in my head that I realize are totally marketing euphemisms MADE to make me feel good and aspirational about what I'm doing/consuming. Glad that gave you a little eureka moment! Thanks for watching xoxo Diana

      It's so affirming to hear that others are on the same / similar journeys! Now more than ever I question whether or not what I'm going through is "valid" (I know it is, but it feels shallow somehow) compared to the larger perspectives of this world through a pandemic. But I have to remind myself that it's a very complex time with lots at work, and comments like yours remind me that I'm not alone! So... we're not alone together! haha best of luck with everything and thanks for watching as always xoxo Diana

    So much of this resonates with me 💕 These thoughts have been spinning through my head for the past few years. Slowly I am processing them and moving away from the self medicated shopping and shifting my desires towards more experiences and activities that give my life value. As I do that my wants have started to decrease. Limiting social media and screen time has definitely helped me be more content.

  • @ricma889
    @ricma889 2 года назад +1

    I resonate so much with your mindset. I’m not perfect, but I try to spend on my needs rather than my wants. Some people get confused when I say this…. It’s okay to purchase your wants here and there, but there is always a limit to not go overboard. A myriad of financially and emotionally successful people have swore that they are where they are because they focus on their goals rather than materialistic desires.

    • @SlowGaze
      @SlowGaze  2 года назад

      I loved hearing your thoughts on this. There's a lot of inherent (or just invisible) sacrifice that can bring many rewards when you focus on what's most important to you, act according to your values, vs. giving into your hedonistic and maybe more impulsive side. That's why I like the word "mindfulness" because it does require our minds to be full of intention and looking ahead. xoxo Diana

      I absolutely agree with your statement. Especially in this capitalist era we live in today, it is important to be mindful about impulsive purchases. There aren’t enough people that encourage this act, which makes is difficult for young kids to realize the true benefits of mindfulness. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and journey with us! I read a comment saying that your videos are very unique and insightful…. And it’s sooo true! Please take care and I wish you the best!

    i so cherish when i come across channels like yours, Diana. life is so busy while also... vapid and empty under capitalism and it seems the pandemic has intensified that for me. content like this reminds me to stop getting so "heady" about it and ground into what materialistic stuff i do keep around

      Thanks so much! I could quit my job because of all the support I had, the deep feeling of unhappiness I found within me, and my creative side-practices. Everyone's story is different, but I'm glad to say that I am still writing mine the way I want. Take care and stay safe! Hugs back from Milwaukee xoxo Diana

    Took me a few weeks to watch this but glad I did-realized how much I missed your spirit! Would love to hear more about the journey to building a sustainable business! As far as beauty/fashion stuffs, I’ve been thinking a lot about personal style (I’m very belatedly developing this)-“does x make me feel more or less like myself?” “What does that even mean?” And how can I get creative without buying anything new? (When I show up to my laptop to write, why does winged eyeliner make me feel more confident? Fascinating!)

    Ahhh, Diana! I'm happy to see you and hear from you. What makes this better is the content of the video because it pertains to an experience I'm also undergoing - a no buy and low buy. I'm on a "replacements only" no buy for certain skincare and makeup products and a low buy for fashion. Cheers to you for reaching the 6 month mark! I can't wait to hear more about your experience.
    I agree that two of the hardest parts of minimalism as it relates to low buys and no buys are the FOMO and removing the desire for more stuff. It's difficult because of the modernization of technology and this capitalist mindset where it's all about how to make the consumer feel like they NEED the product a company is selling. Markets and social media platforms are flooded with ads of products daily and sometimes it feels as though willpower can only restrain our desires for so long.
    It has been tricky for me to navigate these experiences just in a matter of months, but I'm not letting my guilt overpower my intentions with my no buy/low buy. I decided to not go full force because I know how self-critical I can be and I'm allowing myself to just be. To sit with my actions and feelings, analyze them, and produce better habits if I think something has impeded my ability to reach my overarching goals of the year.
    TRACKING - yes! I started tracking in fall 2021 before I wanted to get serious about a no buy/low buy. I think this has helped me the most. Plus, I love writing and doodling. Spreadsheet? Not for me. I just tally in a journal for skincare products I use, as well as eyeshadow palettes I use. If I wear makeup, I just write down the date and the products I use. By fall 2022, I want to count the amount of times I used products in my makeup collection and analyze my experience. I've already seen incredible results tallying my skincare and truly understanding how long it takes to use up an item.
    Diana, I appreciate this video and I'm glad your back on this platform. I definitely missed your insights. Thank you for the tips and it makes me feel cool knowing we are using similar methods during our no buy/low buy journey. I'm excited for the next 6 months for you! You've got this 😊

    • @SlowGaze
      @SlowGaze  2 года назад +1

      Love what you said about willpower only restraining our desires for so long. Nailed it. I think my whole video was trying to basically articulate this whole point: it's not necessarily the mindset or just the decluttering or the tracking (though I'm so glad to hear that's helped you as well!), it's the consistency. The mind-numbing consistency of opting out of a system we feed into for better or worse, day after day, with no end in sight. A herculean and often lonely endeavor. I'm trying to be kind to myself as well, knowing that I'll be "herculean" (or Xena Warrior Princess?) 50-80% of the time, and I'll give in others. As long as I'm okay with it. Thanks so much for sharing, it means so much! Stay strong xoxo Diana

    Awesome video. I really resonate with what you said about thinking about your husband, he doesn't wear makeup and he looks great, he doesn't feel insecure about that or judged by society. I go back and forth between, OMG I want all the makeup and I want to swear off makeup completely and give it all up. What do you think? No makeup challenge?

    • @SlowGaze
      @SlowGaze  2 года назад

      Hi Molly, I've been thinking a lot about that dichotomy you presented. Maybe I should discuss it in a video. I shouldn't necessarily compare myself to my husband because equitable treatment isn't the same as equal treatment. I'll mull on that some more, thanks so much for watching! Tell me if you do indeed go on a no-makeup challenge. I'm not sure I could in my current state, but I'll never say never
