    It's natural when trying to sing with distortion, to do it all wrong! By trying to simply imitate what we hear from our favorite singers, we can easily go down the path to serious injury if we're not careful. In this lesson, I bring to light 3 reasons you might be feeling pain when you try to sing with distortion and then I demonstrate the correct ways to guarantee an aggressive, distorted and PAIN FREE singing voice!

    Cookie Monster sounds like kicking in a loud mid scoped over drive for a solo sound ! It works great at home practicing on your own or at sound check but when then the band all fire up at full volume the guitar gets lost in the mix and you end up burning out the power tubes in your amp from boosting all those low frequencies…! Hopefully by the end of this video you will have shown how to get the anatomical tube screamer working to push those mids in the vocals to get it to pop out in the mix…!

    I didn't watch this video because i had pain, but because i was unsure if my technique was correct (which it seems it was).
    But i just want to say that this is a great video! :)
    I wish i would have found this a few years ago when i first started trying to learn distortion (took my quite a long time and a lot of different videos; your's have helped me tremendously (especially the one on Spencer Sotelo)).
    This would at least have been exactly what i was looking for - and imagining someone who actually hurt themselves experimentning with distortion, this video would be perfect.
    Fantastic video :) - i love how "easy" it is (once you've gotten the hang of it of course) just holding back air. I think that knowing that would help someone new to the subject a lot.

    Since you made few videos on different singers' styles, and since you are The Only Guy On RUclips who's videos on compression and distortion actually make perfect sense...
    May ask you to consider making a video on Graham Bonnet singing style? Young Bonnet, Alcatrazz and Rainbow era? He has such a unique distorted and stressed vocals, which sounds as if he will ruin his voice forever any minute - but he actually doesn't, and I wonder, if this is his unique timbre, or perhaps there is some particular techniques behind his sound...

Or you just used air compression right to the point it will grid, but instead of using this grid, you only use vocal fry technique pushed by compression? Btw, very very good channel information. I’m a heavy metal singer from a Panamanian band called Nightwalkers and I found your videos very helpful to improve my clean vocals. I was using a little air compression to grid my clean voice, but when it comes to shouting parts, I’m currently not able to do it, so I following and recommending your channel to other vocalists from my country. How do you understamd the difference between holding back air and tensioning your throat?

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  2 года назад +2

      Tensing your throat happens with the muscles outside your vocal tract. ...And your neck muscles. Holding back air can be done without engaging any external neck or 'throat' muscles.

    hey! I don't know if this is in your field or not, but do you know screams? like false and fry? I've looked at other videos, but i feel like your shameless style of teaching would help so much :O
    Again, i know its really different but i feel like you'd actually show it properly

    Very very good explanation; and i understand everything; actually i have experienced all that feellings on my voice when i use rasp. I have Just one doubt ; you make and feel the vocal fry in your real vocal cords or in your false vocal cords??? Or maybe in your epiglotys?? Or maybe in two of them??
    What i think is that the false vocal cords fry distortion feels it above the vocal box ; in the soft palate, and the real vocal folds fry feels it in the real vocal cords. Maybe the two ways are right but different.
    What can you tell us about it??
    Thanks

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  4 года назад +3

      Vocal fry happens above the vocal cords. You can feel this if you just go lower and lower in pitch in your chest resonance til you hit fry, and you'll actually feel the vibrations raise in your throat.

    How to sing or get grit like Mr. Big's Eric Martin. He has a grit, but it's clearer and sounds painful at times.

    Hey...Chris...you tell us where we SHOULDN'T feel it (below the voice box) but I’m not sure where I should feel it. When I do the poop thing and hold back air, my Adams apple placement goes way up, and I feel a buzz around the Adams apple area. I don't feel a buzz in my chest. Sometimes I get the sensation I want to cough, or I may actually cough.

    • @chrisliepe

      You should feel it HIGH above the voice box. Same place as when you hold back air under water :)

    I'm the exact opposite... I can easily get in safe distortion down low up to about G4 or so... then it smooths out. Very frustrating :-S

      you might be using more air than you need. Experiment with holding back more air and see how that affects your sound

    Really interesting, thanks! How do you think James Hetfield used to produce his distortion, I found it the most pleasantly sounding. E.g. on the album versions of Sad but true, Enter Sandman, Nothing else matters (and also live for a short while).

      On Black Album he used false cord screaming which is not ruining your voice, on earlier albums he was destroying it by simply yelling. If you wanna know more about false cord technique, please answer ;)

      @@radosawwalkowski5824 Thanks for answering, I would like to know more. However I read in several places that James 'blew' his voice at least once after the Black album was recorded and that's why he finally gave up on raspy singing. So I'm not sure he was using that false chord technique you mentioned.

      @@xk1390 it may have also been becuase of singing right after drinking alcohol, that can mess up your voice pretty well, because your throat dries and you don't feel pain and using false cord it's pretty easy to make your throat sore. False chord is pretty hard to do, I had to train like 3 months to get it properly. You need to stop right after you feel pain, else you'll destroy your voice

      Radosław Walkowski in my opinion James Hetfield’s sang the best en 1989, like in the Seattle 89 concert. My problem is that I can’t reach those high notes, let alone with distortion. Even worse, I can’t cover a Metallica song in standard tuning, I have to do it in half step down, and still I have to make a lot of effort to keep in pitch.

    I think my voice is kidding me. Everytime I stand in front of my mic I don't know how to practise. When I finish my rehearsal and try it only for the sake of feeling the right placement I am doing better. I think a very big part of exploring my voice is when I am not intending to rehearse. I don't really hurt myself when I try to sound gritty but I feels very strained. I have to develop the right feeling then I will be successful.
