Moonlight is a great offering for sure. Awesome that you're doing a video on it. I've been using it for years for game streaming to single board computers as well as various handhelds.
Lon produces some of the best tech content going. No b.s. just honest reviews and great guides... cheers and big thanks to Lon.....
Thanks for putting this together. I've been using gamestream on my desktop and moonlight on the the shield and loving that combo. Worked very well with Xbox controllers and even rumble worked on a lot of games. Wasn't looking forward to change but this helps me start to prep for the change.
How vibration has only worked on nvidia shield controller
@@ffsnek1599 With the xbox 360 wireless receiver plugged into shield it works for a lot of games for me through moonlight.
Thank you so much for this, it was very easy to setup and there's no need to install the controller software anymore either which is a massive plus
Losing gamestream from GFE is a gut punch. I've used it daily since it became a thing. It was always better than Steam's alternative. Sunshine is okay, but the driver level access makes a difference.
@@lashram32 You mean the version that uses GameStream is as fast as GameStream...?
You numpty - that latency advantage is going away in a heartbeat WITH GameStream - that's the ENTIRE point why GameStream support going away sucks so bad! Once you no longer have access to Nvidia's framebuffer - you get added latency no matter what - that's the F-king issue!!! Moonlight devs made a post about it when Nvidia announced the stupid axing.
Great video! really helped me as a new shield tv user and who fell in love with GeForce Now. But wasn’t sure about Gamestream and what it did. This really helped me for future if i ever wanted to direcstream from my laptop!
man you are the GOAT, thanks for giving a spotlight for sunshine. not the easiest way, but it's probably the best
Whoa that is me going live on steam notification bottom right at 1:53 hahaha!
I was trying out a new game I am loving called Your Only Move Is HUSTLE. It is like those old stick figure fights but you do it against a friend like a fighting game and it takes place in turn based moves. This makes it so you can do some crazy fights that would be impossible real time and it means anyone no matter reaction time can play.
Great video as always just got giddy when I saw myself come up in the video haha!
I'll have to check that out!
Just tumbeled over N's announcement that they are about to shut down my our all beloved Gamestream. Gladly I found your great video here. Definitely will give it a shot. At least ShieldTV is still allowing such 'open-source adventures' LOL. Thanks a ton again for these useful tools.
This was very helpful. Thank you. Well made video despite the brevity.
Thanks man, I was just looking for desktop access and this has option for that too.
Cheers
I do this with my stream deck. You can setup a command line command to adjust resolution. It would be easy to add to the application to run directly before running the app
maybe you can use playnite as a luancher and in the setting add the command every time you start a game from it? someone helped me add a command to force fullscreen once when opening any yuzu shortcuts ( nintendo swithcs roms ) to force yuzu to open fullscreen when opening it in playnite, with the fullscreen nintento theme in playniye it looks and functions as a real switch would look like
I love having tech videos from hardcore people like you, no marketing no BS. Thank you Lon, I've been watching you since I was a kid.
Lon, so happy you put together this video. How would this software combo function with a second screen connected to the laptop/server that was a different resolution (let's say 4k)? Can you control what screen is used for the gamestream, and if so, where do you do that? Thanks!
Between the shutdown of GameStream and nVidia's recent anti-consumer practices - they have removed every incentive I had for purchasing nVidia in the future. I switched to nVidia during the 900 series days, but I'll be switching back to AMD when I decide to purchase another card. It makes me really regret my last nvidia purchase....
I still use GameStream server because I disabled automatic updates to NVidia software. The biggest problem I have with Sunshine is the ViGEmBus driver, which used to lock up my PC when I tried it a few months ago.
I did too but it updated regardless today.... F nvidia.
Thanks for the video! Would you mind sharing what router you use at home or some recommendations? I am using a high end Asus with good quality cables and a great PC setup and all I get is horrible lag with in home game streaming. I have 500 down and 50 up but I can't seem to figure out the issue. Thanks again, always great to watch your tech videos.
I've been trying to use SteamLink directly on the Shield and while it does work, it's also pretty clumsy. All of these solutions feel like "Remote Desktop" bundled with some controller drivers and feel more like a novelty than something to daily drive.
I didn't know about Sunlight though, I might have to give it a whirl at some point.
Side note: replacing the aged 500GB SSHD drive in my 2015 Shield Pro with a $33 Crucial MX500 drive was a massive upgrade in performance for that unit.
I’m new to local streaming so a part of me isn’t bothered that gamestream is going away, partly due to not knowing what I was missing, and the fact that sunshine seems to be doing just as good of a job for the most part. I also hated that you had to sign into geforce experience to use anything
I’m already used to controlling a desktop with a controller so I just use the desktop and haven’t added any program shortcuts
And I mean if you’re used to setting up a plex server, how much more difficult is this?
If you would do a video showing the remote connection using a VPN and how that is setup, that would be greatly appreciated. Love your videos man.
The streaming is local, (on your network) you dont need a VPN.
Does sunshine work at 4k if one of the connected monitors is 4k and the others aren't? eg 3-4 monitors where 1 is 2160p? A bluetooth keyboard with trackpad is nice for desktop mode.
Keep up the great work
Thanks very much. Nice video.
I’ll probably use steam link. Any solutions to stream the desktop? Otherwise all the games need to be visible in steam and have some other tweaks to make them work.
Lon - has there been any recent developments for sunshine + moonlight in terms of working out the kinks in user experience and support for it? If so, would love to see an update as there are some really good games coming out this year.
I'd also like to bring to your attention there is a new game library manager called Playnite that might be worth investigating with moonlight + sunshine
@@ckirkyg I use it in my TV with Chromecast TV. In my Moonlight I've only one link to Playnite, it opens on my TV and I've a more nice interface (with emulated games also).
I have some questions:
1. How can I set switching off monitor when moonlight is streaming?
2. Can I shutdown PC remotly by moonlight? I know I could do it with start menu on desktop mode but its take some times...
Hello, how does this work with a multiple monitor setup?
you only need to hold start for the controller to "change" into a mouse. just fyi
Worth to say that you can fix the aspect ratio issue with an hdmi dummy setting the client's resolution. I use this when I stream with parsec as it has the same issue and I'm using a 21:9 main monitor on the host
I'm running 32x9, I tried the dummy HDMI's and had challenges setting it up
@@andrewb7289 Why is that? You simply select the other monitor (the dummy) for the stream and then switch to "only dummy" on windows..you won't see anything on the ultrawide but you just unplug the dummy and that's it.
Very interesting. I’m playing steam games using moonlight only on my iPhone 14 Pro max while my computer is the client. Do I need sunshine? I’m streaming games at 4k 120 hz but I never tried this sunshine thing before. Do I need it?
Also, I use g force experience to use moonlight
Well done, thank you.
Quick question, is the set up similiar for Linux?
I don’t have an Xbox controller to connect to my Shield. I can’t get my Nvidia shield controller to work? Do I need to by a new controller?
Can we just use GFE on the gaming PC instead of installing Sunshine and run moonlight on the shield?
I tried this about a week ago. While it worked, I had a couple issues. 1st one being my PC monitor is 4k/HDR and my TV is 1080p, so SteamLink was always blown out. But second, many games must be launched within their launcher for further online verification. For example, Madden must launch in Steam, which also launches EA or GTA V launches in Epic which also launches Rockstar. I didn't dig further, but Madden wouldn't stream despite running on the host, as it strangely opens in a background window. I probably would prefer playing on my HDR monitor anyways.
This only used to happen to me when I was connecting to a host pc which was currently using the integrated aka power saving gpu. But if you are connecting to host pc which has the dedicated aka high performance gpu connected to the display then this issue will not be present. You can verify this by opening Nvidia Control Panel and if you only have 3 tabs of settings to click on then you are connected to power saving gpu and will suffer. However, if you have more tabs that include "Change Desktop Resolution", "Setup HD Audio" and others regarding video color settings and G Sync options (if u have a G Sync monitor) then you are using high performance gpu and will not encounter that issue.
Oh....I read your comment again and I see what you meant. So, in that case, you would need a mouse and/or keyboard to be able to navigate prompts that launch behind other focused windows. He mentioned the long press of Start and Select buttons to enter mouse mode or you can install REWASD, like I do, and setup a few different profiles which you can switch between by pressing whatever buttons you choose in the app and I have one profile custom mapped to keyboard and mouse functions and it works like a dream. Then I hotkey switch back to my gamepad profile when the game starts running.
I can't get audio to play from my tv through shield. Any ideas?
Steam big picture chose a bad time to start having bugs. Always used to work but now when i exit a game it is frozen in steam big picture and i have to manually go to pc sometimes to exit big picture. So i'll add the games i play the most for now directly to moonlight. But definitely like moonlight more than steam link app, moonlight just seems to behave better.
How to activate mouse emulation with a ps4 joystick to navigate on the desktop? Thanks
Does AI upscaling still work on moonlight?
Guys, Can anyone tell my why when streaming games using sunshine/moonlight I get the audio from PC instead of Nvidia Shield? I don't know how to set it right. I only have this issue when launching steam games
This is a shield tv pro. It would have been good to see it in the title. I was looking for the basic tv version.
Good work's .. thanks
I wonder if this is better than Steam Link. My Shield TV pro 2019 arrives in a few days and I will try both things.
Edit: it totally is, but only via ethernet
How can i get sound on my shield? Known issues?
Does this work with party/game chat discord?
If there was an alternative to the Shield for perfect audio passtrough in Pelx, I would buy it. Shield getting slower and slower. No AV1 support.
If Ur in Europe I could recommend the Nokia 8010 once it's in stock
Is this only for games or would it work for example, Netflix? Just wondering ;)
Netflix is already a native app on Shield.
can anyone point me to a simple way to install SUNSHINE on a Mac Mini M1?
UPDATE 11/27/23: The VIGEM software on github is down, dev ran into some problems and left a msg for everyone saying hes done updating it.
What is the benefit of this over Steam link?
It can mirror the entire desktop so you can get games to run that may not work through your Steam library .
@@LonSeidman thanks for the reply. I always thought the steam link app let you do that too, but I'll have to recheck now. 😊
The Shield is amazing! I mean, decoding a 4K stream, it only takes a maximum of 2.8ms?!??! THAT IS CRAZY. A Samsung S22 took me ~15ms to decode a 1080p stream 💀💀. So the shield is crazy good, makes it feel like you're playing locally. Too bad i don't have one...
Thank goodness gamestream is currently still a part of GeForce Experience but if it should be disabled I'll be returning to this video for Sunshine 🌞
It's not. Are you talking about GeForce experience streaming?
@@BatpimpnGamestream still worls perfectly for me
I loved using this. But my use case was Xbox PC app passed to a MacBook. I could never figure out how to get a microphone headset to work. I want to be a thieving pirate, but that requires me to be able to negotiate. 😂
will it work on ios version of Moonlight?
Yes any version of moonlight should be able to connect to a Sunshine server.
@@LonSeidman wow! Good to know, will try this soon, thanks!
Do AMD cards work with sunshine?
yes
Pro tip: you have to have a monitor connected to the host machine or you will get a black screen.
Will it launch the PC Xbox App?
I was unable to get that to work unfortunately short of going to the desktop first.
I would look at Playnite which is a super good game launcher that can incorporate all the individual game launchers for gameplay including Xbox. Since the Windows Xbox app has completely stopped working on my PC, Playnite has been able to take its place.
There is a xbox cloud game pass app for android that works very well on ShieldTV. It does not require you to be on your PC, just a game pass subscription. Load times are much faster than the same game on my XboxOne.
-.- Says he's going to put the link in the description... checks the description to find lots of self promotion and no link. Yes, I know how to google, but why say you're going to do it if you aren't going to?
Anyone recently tried this and has feedback. Considering buying a steam deck or trying this for free
Works well if Ethernet-wired. Otherwise it's juddery.
Wait what, you bought a device and then they retroactively removed a feature from the product you already own? How is that even legal.
Sony did the same when they removed linux support from the ps3 despite it being listed as a feature on the back of the box. Welcome to late stage capitalism, where you own nothing.
Rog ally supports 144 FPS, Is a mortal sin that shield doesn t support at least 120
Is this still working?
Yes still works!
@@LonSeidman Thanks you very much. I'll try it out tomorrow.
Cant imagine what could possibly cause lockups on 2015 using HEVC. So weird.
Doesn’t make sense to gee rid of game stream. It’s becoming very popular now
I used Gamestream and am thinking about changing to SunShine. In your experience, does it run better? I already have a Desktop link, using "c:\Windows\System32\mstsc.exe" as an added game in Geforce Experience, which was not an option by default. That would be a benefit to using SunShine.
Very informative video. The Sunhine/Vigebus setup was working great for a few hours. However, one of those two downloads infected my computer with some nasty malware. It required a full windows reinstall. Be wary.
Why on earth would you use the nvidia shield when a raspberry pi is more powerful AND less than half the price???
Can you not show this with an Nvidia Shield Controller? Most Shield users will have a Shield Controller. Does the Shield Controller do Mouse emulation?
Oh sure...my "kids" play lego star wars and lego batman on my steam account. Those "kids" are always playing what may otherwise be interpreted as guilty pleasure games.
I've just been using Steam Link app on my shield.
No one is paying for this video, but he has tons of affiliate links to support Nvidia and make money. Middle finger to Nvidia for screwing Shield users. I'll never trust Nvidia again.
Firefox is better than brave
Qutebrowser is better than either of those.
Sunshine is FAIL, it requires a Ryzen 3 or i3 to run.
Don't even waste my time with these kind of non-backwards compatible millenial hacks. I swear to god Millenial PC techs and programmers are the worst. Backwards compatibility is everything. Everything. Back to good old Windows Remote Desktop that works all the way on Windows and hardware back to 1998.
