      Nah you just got good taste in music brotha, Alice In Chains still rules and Jerry is one of the best songwriters on the planet. I love Layne he’s my favorite singer but I can’t believe people actually deprive themselves AIC music just because it’s not Layne singing. Their peak will always be with Layne but they’re a damn good band still and black gives way to blue is one of the best comeback albums ever. I got major love for Layne as a singer and vocalist but as long as Jerry is around running the show and writing the music like he always has I’ll love the band. Solo Jerry rules too especially degradation trip vol1&2 which is a masterpiece Imo. They were my favorite band with Layne and they’re still my favorite band even without him, just a testament to Jerry’s greatness and surrounding himself with a kickass trio like Sean/mike/Duvall. Lastly Duvall doesn’t deserve the shit some of the “fans” give him, he may not be Layne but he’s a damn good musician and fits really well in the band, incredibly good dude too so it pisses me off even all these years later that people shit on him pretty much solely because he isn’t Layne

    I'm not even 2 minutes in, and already found a really big inaccuracy. The band wasn't 'done' before Layne died. They were still together, just on an unofficial hiatus because Layne wasn't able to play shows and refused to go out in public, due to his rampant drug use.
    They didn't break up.

    • @puppetmaster8551
      @puppetmaster8551 Год назад

      That’s not really an inaccuracy, the band never officially broke up but internally they knew the band was pretty much done for because of Layne’s struggles and health. They were all close friends so they were never publicly break up but for all intents and purposes the band was pretty much done.

    • @Ariel_thenotsolittlemermaid
      @Ariel_thenotsolittlemermaid Год назад

      @@puppetmaster8551 it IS an accuracy. Many bands broke up despite members remaining friends, so that's not the reason they remained together; and Jerry, Sean and Mike all said in multiple interviews that they always hoped Layne would recover and they'd be able to continue playing together, so they hoped the band would continue and that's why they only went on hiatus rather than breaking up.
      THAT'S why it matters. Saying they broke up because of his addiction makes it sound like they gave up on him and decided he's done, which isn't true. Being on hiatus while a bandmate struggles and waiting for his hopeful recovery is VERY different from breaking up because a member is incapacitated at the moment.

    • @puppetmaster8551
      @puppetmaster8551 Год назад

      @@Ariel_thenotsolittlemermaid they didn’t officially break up because they were buddies and wanted to leave the door open but Jerry has said before that deep down they knew the band was likely done. I agree saying they broke up because of Layne’s addiction isn’t exactly right and they officially never broke up but they knew it was likely over and they were pretty much broken up even if it was completely official. It’s one of the main reasons Jerry pursued a solo career because he knew AIC in that iteration was likely done for. So they never officially broke up but the band was pretty much done in every way except for officially announcing it to the public, of course they all hoped Layne would recover but they pretty much knew that was unlikely. Jerry has even talked about how during the unplugged show they knew it was probably their last hurrah in that iteration so it was very bittersweet. They were pretty much on an indefinite hiatus with very little chance of the hiatus ending.

      I think post Layne, Alice has just become Jerry Cantrell + the band. And it’s not to say that’s a bad thing. I mean it’s been such a long time since the 90’s and the way Jerry writes music has change since he is after all older today, but I agree. It’s not the same, and they know it. But it’s too similar to Jerry’s solo stuff. Maybe if Duvall sang lead more often, then it could be something else and cooler, but from the stuff I’ve heard. It also sounds to polished and so innocent compared to Alice before… but maybe they have grown up and well I support them either way. Regardless if I like the music or not.

      Great comment and I wish everyone had this attitude and outlook on the band. I loved Layne and he was awesome but I still love AIC today even without him, Jerry is a special special songwriter and the other 3 members still do a great job, it still very clearly sounds like AIC and the songs are still great. It honestly bothers me when I see people shit on the band now or Jerry for continuing it or Duvall simply because he is not Layne, Jerry has been the primary songwriter since the bands inception he had every right to continue on with the band especially which Sean and Inez are still around, Layne was my favorite singer but AIC was and is alot more than just Layne. If Layne was the primary songwriter these people would actually have a good point but he never was it was always Jerry, the no Layne no chains crowd is annoying and very disrespectful to the band members. AIC kicked ass with Layne and they still kickass with Duvall. Still my favorite band and I can’t imagine not giving them a fair shot just because Layne is gone.

    I think the new stuff is solid, but it would be even better if they let William really take the full lead singing role on the new albums. The ones where he is allowed to let it rip like last of my kind, phantom limb and so far under - he delivers the goods. But too many of the new era songs are all dual harmony with not much in the way of a defined lead singer. I understand that harmonies are a huge part of AIC but the new stuff does too much blending and vocal sharing.

    Damn, Jerry was cold talking about Weiland!!!I get it. First, of course, they would NOT want another severe addict and after reading both Scott and his (ex) wife’s /widow’s Autobiographies, I think Scott was worse off than Layne in certain factions of addiction and his career. Jerry wanted NO PART. Good call.
    I would really love it if someone would interview Jerry and ask him if he ever considered Brenden Maier (sp?) of “Jar of Flies” cover and (and his own band that again the name slips my mind). I bet Brenden could sing LHL better than William!!

    The biggest fatal mistake they made in my opinion was not finding a vocalist of similar caliber to continue - DuVall is extremely subpar, and before you people lash at me in the comments, I'm not one of those "no Layne, no chains" guys. The issue is that these songs need to be elevated with equally great vocals to reach the heights they deserve, and DuVall's talent is nowhere near that of the rest of the guys in the band. Take the Mike Inez situation for instance : Mike Starr was an incredibly talented bass player, and he really brought the bass to the forefront of some of the most iconic songs of the band. When he was replaced, the band brought in a guy who was on an equal caliber of talent; even if he wasn't Starr, he could still bring that incredibly unique bass to the forefront of the songs and make some amazing classics with the band, such as Rotten Apple, A little bitter, Nutshell, and many, many more songs that exemplify just how great of a caliber of a bass player he is. No one today has any issues with Mike Inez being in the band just because he isn't Mike Starr, because he made it work, he was that good.
    The same goes for the vocals. I'm not hating on William. He in fact seems like a great guy and all, but he is just nowhere near the same ballpark of talent as Staley was. I don't dislike his singing because he isn't Layne, I dislike it because its subpar, and just like the example with Starr, if the band had brought in another incredible talent, even a female lead singer, I would be all over it; But they didn't. No matter how many times I try to convince myself to like DuVall, all it takes is to listen to him live try to belt the chorus of "Man in The Box", or sing "Them Bones", or any of the other Staley era songs, and my ears just cringe. Its doing a disservice to these incredible pieces of music, to the point where its almost insulting.
    Its a real shame honestly, and I think that if the band would have hired someone entirely different before BGWTB came out, they might have managed to achieve even greater artistic heights. As much as I enjoy some songs off their 3 DuVall era records (Private Hell, Acid Bubble, Black Give Way to Blue, Breath on a Window, Choke, Lab Monkey, All I am, Fly) , I cannot fool myself into thinking these albums stand anywhere near the same level of pure awesomeness as all of their work with Staley.
    I love this band dearly, and their music has been instrumental to my life, and I wish the members all the best, but I cannot help but be saddened that they didn't go another route after the unfortunate passing of the great late Staley. Someone with the level of Staley's talent deserved to be replaced with another singer of equally raw talent, that does not try to imitate him, but can still reach the same levels of power, tight vocal control, grit, and pure raw emotional delivery of the songs.

Why should Jerry the primary songwriter of the band and Sean and mike have to create a new band just because Layne died. Jerry spent his life building AIC into what it became, expecting him to throw away his life’s work because Layne died is absurd. If Layne was the primary songwriter of the band I’d 100% agree with you but he literally never was, almost all their biggest hits were written by Jerry alone, only 3 songs in their history that Jerry wasn’t credited on, meanwhile there is like 20+ which includes almost all the hits that Layne had 0 part in writing. Love Layne he’ll always be my favorite singer but the band was a lot more than just him and as long as Jerry is around running the show and writing all the music like he always has AIC will be alive and well. I truly don’t understand how some of you say Layne was AIC when Jerry did a significantly bigger amount of the songwriting than Layne, Jerry has literally done more of the songwriting than every other member in their history combined. Black gives way to blue is a stellar album all the way through and includes some of their best songs ever like “private hell” “your decision” “a looking in view”. Seeing them live is also still a great time and well worth it.
