Selling at least 75 million copies worldwide, Black Sabbath is one of the most commercially successful heavy metal bands of all time and often referred to as THE greatest heavy metal band of all time, helping to literally create the genre out of thin air. In addition to their 19 studio albums, Black Sabbath has released 8 live albums, 16 compilation albums, seven concert films, and one EP. Few bands have had so many lineup changes as Black Sabbath. The only constant during their 49 years of existence was Tony Iommi, but even HE quit the band briefly, remember? Regardless, they remain one of the most innovative bands to ever exist. More importantly, they remain one of the most INFLUENTIAL bands to ever exist, not just with music, but with literature, television, and movies. Whether you realize it or not, they’ve influenced you, too.

Which band should I cover next for this series?
What's your favorite Black Sabbath song and/or album?
The Sex Pistols or The Monkees
Hey, Mr. Beat. You should definitely do a brief history of Daft Punk! They were known for their best dance hits such as Around the World, One More Time, Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, Revolution 909, Get Lucky (feat. Pharrel Williams), etc. Please do a video on them. OK?
Would love to see Slipknot
Please do Kraftwerk next
America
Respect to Iommi for never leaving the band throughout the years.
He was truly the heart and soul of Sabbath. That said, he did leave briefly in 1969. ;)
But it was never the same when it just only him
@@mattbeatgoeson yeah, but it was called 'Earth' back then, so practically he never left Black Sabbath. :)
It's only Black Sabbath when *all four* original members are there.
*Together, it's Ward Osbourne Butler Iommi who form the band* Black Sabbath. Iommi can't do it alone.
No combination of any three of them can do it without th fourth. Sabbath is the Product Of *Those Four* Dudes.
@@nodaysback8390 Cheers to that, mate!
Black Sabbath are just one of those bands nobody can hate. Amazing musicians, but never became full of themselves. They always stayed the same working class lads who stuck to their humble roots and yet always developed musically, and that’s why I love them so much: they helped give a voice to people like me.
You nailed it on the head with that analysis.
Ehh, Ozzy got full of himself. Though his solo career is astounding, you can't deny his own ideas and ego were a big part of what drove him away, drugs aside. His attitude about Dio was honestly disgusting.
@@MintyCoffee I do love Dio and I am very aware that Ozzy disliked him and felt insecure, but I think that since Ozzy got sober he’s been a really cool bloke
@@Jipwell I gotta agree with you on that one
for your next video can you please do how Rock artists inspire and influence by Bob Marley.
This is the best Sabbath documentary I've seen yet. Almost nobody ever goes beyond the Ozzy albums, you're lucky if they even mention Dio. Iommi rules.
Thank you. Iommi definitely deserves more credit!
for your next video can you please do how Rock artists inspire and influence by Bob Marley.
Agree with you, as Iommi played lead guitar without fret-hand finger tips. See the title A Bit Of Finger.
Maybe someone can make one where they get the facts straight, right, and correct. Do those matter to you?
Read Geezer’s autobiography. It’s incredible and unbelievable!
It's amazing how much Tony believed in Black Sabbath especially in that era when band members are always coming and going, he stuck around. He inspired me to play the guitar
I find it fascinating that Tony could play the guitar rather well without the use of some of his fingers, much like Django Reinhardt before him. I’m fairly certain Reinhardt probably inspired him in his musical career (and also Jerry Garcia from here in the States).
@@DiamondKingStudios I believe he mentioned Jdango as being an inspiration to continue to play after his accident
@@sydguitar99 I don’t remember that from h this video, but I do from another.
@@DiamondKingStudios I've seen in multiple videos but it was not mentioned here
I like the diversity in the videos. It's really nice to learn about artists you wouldn't think much of otherwise.
Johnny Cash is coming up, so I finally get to cover a country artist!
My dad is a huge Black Sabbath fan, when they did a reunion tour in the late 90s my dad couldn’t find anyone to watch my brother & I so he just took us with him. We were way too young & I remembering covering my ears the whole time it was so loud 😂
Sabbath only started down-tuning on their THIRD album "masters of Reality" in 1971. From 1968 to 1971 & from 1976 to 1979, they were tuned to E standard. Geezer was also originally a guitarist & only first played bass when he joined Sabs.
Ya I thought that was so. Didn't he just start out using very light strings?
@@domtursich8191 Banjo strings, because the gauge he really wanted (0.08-0.38) didn't exist back then.
I couldn't have even imagined Robert Plant joining. Plant is one of my fav singers of all time and Zeppelin is my fav classic rock band of all time and who know Sabbath with Plant could've been incredible
P.S: Your video actually helped me discover Led Zeppelin And Pink Floyd. I never listened to them and these 2 bands changed my life. I also wanted to mention how your channel changed me musically so I'm thankful for your content and keep on making these vids man.
Interesting fact: I actually live in Workington. I LOVE Black Sabbath and having them play their first ever show here is an amazing boy of history. There’s even a little plaque in the local theatre (the Carnegie) about it. So cool.
REPRESENT. Also, I might be visiting your town next June.
@@mattbeatgoeson That’s awesome, man. If there’s a chance I can meet you, i’ll take it. ❤️
Been waiting for this episode forever since Black Sabbath is one of my favorite bands. This did not disappoint. Great job!
What a coincidence, I've recently been redeveloping my love of black sabbath going through their albums through the cassette again etc and this video comes out 5 days ago.
Very interesting to see how bands can rise and fall so drastically in such a short amount of time
Just got off work, feel truly blessed! Thank you for making these brief history videos. Some of my favorite videos to watch right now!!
It is an honor. I love making them and I'm glad folks enjoy them!
This was soooo cool -- thanks for the history of my favorite band!
I became a fan back in 99 when I went to my first Ozzfest and the original Black Sabbath played -- one of the best show/festival I've ever been to. Since then, I made Ozzfest my annual summer tradition and started buying their music. I was only a casual Ozzy fan, but it was Sabbath that plunged me into Fandom.
I'll be honest, I didn't really care for non-Ozz records, so most of this video was news to me. I knew Dio sang for Heaven and Hell, but that was about all I knew... I didn't realize how many times this band changed their diapers, lol
Yeah the lineup changes were out of control, but Iommi was the biggest genius behind the band, in my opinion, so as long as he was around I get why they kept the Sabbath name. Thanks for the kind words!
I just wanna say both this channel and Mr. Beat are two of my favorite channels on RUclips. You cover two different topics I care a lot about very well and it’s nice seeing both of these great channels from the same great guy.
Thank you for the kind words. It means a lot!
My favorite band since I was 13, and I can't believe that they are all still ALIVE !!! I mean these guys really abused themselves for so many years, it's really amazing. Long live Black Sabbath!
One of the greatest bands of all time! Thanks for doing a vid on them. Please do a brief history of Foo Fighters.
Heck yeah, and I will definitely cover Foo Fighters at some point. :)
Thanks!
Black sabbath was the first band I ever got into when I was like 6-7 when my dad played me sabbath bloody sabbath and I've stuck with them ever since, no playlist can go without a sabbath song no matter how much rap. I love the sabbath
Easily the best band of all time, they created so many different genres and sounds
They certainly did. So many bands can trace their sound directly back to them.
@@mattbeatgoeson yeah, not to mention I’m pretty sure everyone is still alive, even through heavy drug use
To be the godfathers of a Genre let alone huge sub genres etc is incredible because of the exponential effect across millions of musicians , their lives & the music industry from recording to equipment. As the guy here states , it’s more incredible how all four are still around when most music legends are long dead .
Easily ??
I love Sabbath, but NO
Led Zeppelin = 🐐
Sadly not even the best of the era.
Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd you know
Really nailed it with this one, but there a few things not mentioned that really add more to the story.
- Tony Iommi was involved in an industrial accident at 17 that cut the tips of his fingers off. Because of this, he created "thimbles" that very much impacted his guitar sound.
- Dio didn't leave just to start his solo career, he left due to a massive falling out regarding the band's "Live Evil" album. He was accused of tampering with the mix to make his vocals louder. Whether or not this actually happened is unclear, as everyone gives different accounts.
- "Born Again" was not intended to be a Black Sabbath album, but they were forced to use the Black Sabbath name when it came time to release it.
Born Again was always a Sabbath album, I think you’re referring to Seventh Star?
Mr Beat I am a huge fan of your history channel, Ive watched for years. I had no clue you had a music channel. You are the man brother, thanks for the content
You are a hero for covering the post Ozzy years in such detail! The research must have been exhausting.
Great video, as per usual.
You should consider doing a video on Metallica and/or Megadeth. The history of the 2 bands is so interconnected and paralleled, it would be cool to see one with both!
wow you deserve so much more views and subs, such quality content and really well explained and captivating! keep going !
the lineup changes era was amazing. Born Again, 7th Star, Headless Cross and Tyr are amazing albums.
Yessss one of my favorite bands and the most influential for metal and rock, their music will forever transcend time and space. Way ahead of its time.
Well put!
Yesss I’ve been waiting for this video for a while
Mr.Beat, you have the greatest name of all time for a music channel.
Yesss I’ve been waiting for this forever
i have been waiting for this day since i found this channel. thank you.
One of my favorite small details about the band is the fact that the song Black Sabbath is triple titled, it'll show up as "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath on the album Black Sabbath.
Also, the weird part about the song Iron Man is the fact that there is a sort of disagreement online, some say that it's based on the Marvel character and some say it's based on a British children's book.
Been waiting on this one for a while🤘
I've been waiting for this
Nice Video! Black Sabbath is definitely on my top 10 favorite bands!
Awesome and thank you!
Gonna tell you something: This is the best video about Sabbath's history I ever watched. Everything's on point, specially when "The Eternal Idol" comes in, I always had a problem about people saying that the Headless Cross lineup toured for it, or when forgot about Terry and Burt, and cmon man, they toured and there's recordings lol. Amazing job!
I've been waiting for this video from you for years!
Subscriped!
Wow. In-depth history; you really covered it it seems. Thanks
you should really do video on the beastie boys. they had such an interesting and diverse sound that perfectly mixed punk rock, rap, and samples so seamlessly. they're one of my favorite "bands" and i think a video about them would fit perfectly in this series
I've been waiting 2 whole years for this vid!
I really wish Dio would have stayed in Black Saabath for another 2 or 3 years in the 80s as I truly believe some of the greatest songs of all time such as Neon Knights, Die Young, and Heaven and Hell were recorded during the time he was in the band. Just imagine all the other cool material they could have come up with if they had stuck together even a just year longer... 😢 rip Dio
Heaven and Hell & Mob Rules are my fav Sabbath albums by a country mile - everything Dio touched turned to gold, and Sabbath was no exception!
Knocked another one out of the park, Mr. Beat! This was a fascinating and entertaining view into an Iconic and groundbreaking band. The genesis (oh, would love, love, love a Genesis video!!!) of the heavy metal genre was so simple and subtle and yet it launched a loud and strong movement that continues to this day. Thanks for another amazing video. My (second, and in no particular order) band suggestion is (We are) Rush! I remember a concert at the Northfield Coliseum (southeast of Cleveland, Ohio) when Geddy (rumor has it as originally Gerry, but his grandma pronounced it Geddy and it stuck) was just learning the keyboard and he only played a few simple cords... Just a thought!
hey man i absolutely love the content it has really inspired me musically and helped me find cool bands, one band that’s really cool that i think deserves a video is the who. one of the best bands of all time
I have been waiting and wanting this video ever since I saw ur nirvana vid thanks
Well done video on their history….I’m impressed!
Great job! Thanks a lot for this video. Now I definitely know more about my favorite band. 🤘
Awesome video as usual
One of my absolute favorite bands
Glad to hear it!
SO maybe you can tell me why Randy Rhoades wasn't even talked about ? ?? please let me know 👌
Yes! I recall asking for this once!
Many others agreed with you :)
Oh my god this is Mr. Beat. I’m crying in joy that I have found this
Great video! Hope to see more soon in the future
Finally Black Sabbath! Thank you so much
Thanks for watching!
Master Of Reality has always been my favorite Sabbath album. It was also the first Sabbath album I ever heard. I was blown away...even as an impressionable 9 year old.

God Bless Tony Iommi, he had been through it. Glad to know he’s been doing good. Even did a couple solo songs with Ozzy recently.
I would love a video on The Offspring. Great work on this one, by the way. These videos are awesome!
Thanks James!
DUDE THE FACT YOU SAID NEVER SAY DIE IS THEIR MOST UNDERRATED ALBUM IS SO SPOT ON!!! THANK YOU, I FEEL SO VALIDATED.
Tbh, ive felt like thats been my fav sabbath album for a long time now, i also felt very validated when i found out it was kim thayil's favorite sabbath album (im a huge soundgarden fan).
i love these videos so much
A s a fan since 1990 at age 15, this has been one of my favorite bands
Love these videos keep it ip
another great video man!! I would love to see one from The Doors
gran trabajo, gracias !
my favorite band
thanks mate
Another fantastic retrospective by the mR. BeaT ‼️🖤‼️
What a great band biography. I was a huge fan but never listened after Mob Rules. Thanks to the streaming music services I'm going to have to revisit all of the other Sabbath albums, especially 13.
Again one of my favorite sab albums is born again.
Omg It's Mr Beat talking about Black Sabbath, my dreams have come true
No, no, no Mr. Beat. Dehumanizer is their most underrated album. Seriously, though, thank you for making a Black Sabbath history video that didn't end after Never Say Die. 🤘😎🤘
Best video you've ever made.
That first album was gold.
OH MY GOD U ARE A LEGEND!
I was at the show where they reunited again. It was the first ozzfest. It really was great. Sabbath played all their hits flawlessly I might add, then ozzy played all his solo hits. It was fantastic. I am very difficult to satisfy at live shows. The ONLY thing I could say was bad really wasn't bad. Ozzy really didn't move around at all. But his voice was perfect, he didn't miss any notes. Eben the super high note on crazy train. A memory I treasure.
Great Video! One thing that bothered me is that you didnt include the heaven and hell era between 2006-2010. But all around a great video
Love your videos.
Thank you!
My favorite band. My favorite Black Sabbath Album was Volume 4.
So what about Randy Rhoades ? You are the second comment on saying that Black Sabbath w/your favorite band and I don't know why they don't even talk about him or maybe I'm wrong about him team up with Ozzy
I can't believe you missed the part about Iommi having his fingertips cut off at work on his right hand. Since he's left handed, it made it difficult to play guitar.
Yeah, that's a pretty major omission and kind of an essential part of how Sabbath developed their sound.
I know this wasn’t because of me specifically but thx for reviewing this band! I hope u get a very cool hat!
Edit : I don’t really see this guy getting mentioned a lot, but is there a possibility that you will do a vid on David Bowie any time soon, I feel as if he deserves to be preserved like this, at least imo.
Awesome and heck yeah to David Bowie
The original line up at Birmingham NEC 1999 surpassed any expectations I may have had before seeing them live for the first time. 👌👍
The amount of work you must have done in this video is unbelievable... thank you so much lmao
I’m on an Ozzy kick right now. Listening to him. Watching the podcast. Doing more research. I was born in 1992. I’m 31.
Great video!
The O’Jays next,please.
Amazing Video
"She's Gone" is the best song on Technical Ecstacy. One the their best songs, period.
Black Sabbath was one of them bands that just refused to die. Props to Tony for pushing on!!
A truly wonderful band. I recommend covering Uriah Heep's history too!
Amazing
this is a great video, I'd love to see a Brief history of the band YES
I discovered Black Sabbath in the 9th grade. By the end of the 10th grade I had all their studio albums with Ozzy. Also Heaven and Hell and Sabotage on vinyl. To this day Volume Four and Sabotage are my favorites by far.
sabotoge had ozz
great choice
as a black kid who love sabbth thank for the info of my favor band of all time
This is pretty good. How about Budgie next? They are one of my favorite bands, and are criminally underrated despite inspiring a lot of other bands in the 80's.
The original title of the Paranoid album was going to be "War Pigs". It makes sense considering the cover art shows a pig dressed in armor swinging a sword. The original title of "War Pigs" was "Walpurgis", which had alternate lyrics than the famous War Pigs version we hear all the time. The demo on the Ozzman Cometh compilation album, recorded as rehearsal in an empty auditorium, has these original darker lyrics. It has the Black Sabbath sound in it's purest murkiest form
great video
I didn't realize you had a music channel along with your History channel
7:23 ahh, should've grabbed a banjo.
[Sleep's Holy Mountain's aptly named "some grass" always cracks me up out of sheer contrast in style xD. But it is also pretty good banjo stuff, tbf]
Love this band, one of my fairies! Could you do van Halen next?
Children of the Grave is the epitome of a rock and roll song. Master of Reality has it all.
Loved the video i've been waiting for this and Metallica.
I LOVE BLACK SABBATH
Not totally through the video yet so perhaps you covered it but it should be mentioned that Tony at the age of 17 was involved in an industrial accident working at a sheet metal factory which resulted in him losing the tips of his fingers on his fretting hand, which is probably partly responsible for their later heavier unique sound around Master of Reality, when they tuned down to C#
