I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne! Layne’s mom said it best regarding his voice: it’s like Nails surrounded by marshmallows! I agree👍🏻 RIP LAYNE❤️
Addiction is just like any other struggle in the sense that you can’t help the person suffering, they have to want it themselves badly enough. You have to be sick and tired of being sick and tired. And Layne wasn’t, Layne was in such a bad state of mind that he was committed to going out that way in the end. Because of demri and because of his father. My mother was just like his father. She used me for drugs and money for a long time as well. And when I got clean, she continued to suck me dry until I relapsed, and stole my pills and dope. I finally got clean for good and cut her out. But it was the hardest decision of my life having to cut her out when I longed to get to know her and have that mother son bond my whole life. I get it. RIP Layne… your story is a sad one.. but you’ve helped me and so many others…

Drugs are always the common denominator with the deaths of these talented musicians, starting in the 50's and continuing today. So many talented, good people over the decades, lost to addiction. It's the hardest demon to fight besides depression, combine the two and there's hardly any coming back. You are so right about not being able to help someone with their struggles, even with the ones closest to you. They have to want it, and it comes down to having to do what's best for your own recovery. A psychiatrist told me once that if a person is determined to end things, there's no stopping them. I'm so sorry about your relationship with your mother. I hope you're doing well today.
He had one of the most unique voices I'd ever heard. When he'd sing, I could feel his emotions and relate to them as well. What a horrible tragedy. A life taken from the world far too soon. I pray that he's at peace and the demons that tormented him are gone. He is sadly missed. ❤
Layne's death completely ripped me up, despite how expected it had become. We'd heard nothing of him for a few years and you just knew it was coming eventually, but when the news came it was devastating for AIC fans like myself who'd been into them since 13 and were now 20. Unfortunately I then failed to deal with a lot of the crap in my own life in the years following his death, I never showed that face to my friends, and I was consumed by my own heroin and crack addiction. Thankfully I'm clean now and I've found a completely new appreciation and perspective for AIC music. I'll never, ever get tired of that voice, or that MTV Unplugged performance.
When you’re young, you never envision addiction is even a possibility. I’ve always said that every addict has to find the one thing they can’t live without dying first. Mine was my family but for a lot of people they don’t live long enough to find that one thing. You are missed and I thank you for sharing your talent with the world❤️
Cool documentary! If any band deserves a decent tribute it's AIC. What a story - including their unlikely comeback in 2006, and three more LP's. They've been reformed for longer than they were together the first time. Salut Jerry, Sean, Mike and William. No-one could ever take the place of Layne- I really miss him. However, William has proven to be a great partner for Jerry to work with. Jerry's writing, singing and playing is better than ever. Good stuff, cheers.
I absolutely love these guys. I have nothing bad to say they turned their flaws into something beautiful and I wish I was there to witness it. Rip Layne Rip Star🙏🏽
I still get a little bent when docs like this will point out Kurt Coblams issues and apparent suicide, while mere seconds earlier show a picture of Scott Weiland and make no mention of the fact he went through the same thing. Strange how we romanticize certain individuals lives, but seem to forget others?
Being such a big fan of Alice this was amazing to watch, I couldn’t stop myself at the end crying because of Layne, we miss all miss you and again thank you for the music ❤️
Dude AC Speed can even narrate a 2 hour video about watching a bird outside the window and I won't skip even one second. He's got an awesome tone and flow

Very well put together and narrated, thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I know AIC’s story through and through but it never gets old hearing a slightly different rendition of it. AIC, along with Layne and Jerry’s harmonies, will always be a staple in my developing music style growing up.
I thought I read every horror story about Layne....I never knew the stuff about his dad showing up to get money and drugs and gas lighting his addictions. This is soul crushing.....as if it wasn't bad enough. 😞
Check out the late, great Mark Lanegan's memoirs, "Sing Backwards and Weep." The audio version, read by Mark himself, is here on RUclips for free. Although its 12 hours long, the stories Mark tells about Layne and his father, which I won't spoil for you, are both incredible and pathetic. The life of a heroin addict is absolutely terrifying.
Rip 😢🕊️💔 😪 Layne Staley you were and still are a true legend of vocal God a force to be reckoned with and you can never truly be replaced you will never be forgotten much love to Layne Staley and the rest of Alice in chains ⛓️🫶🤟
Heroin is the devil incarnate. It doesn’t wait for you to die it takes your soul as it drags you through a painful existence. The tragic thing is people like Layne believe it’s too late and have lost the battle. There’s always a way out and it’s never too late.
man I know what Layne went through I was a heroin addict for years . I'm clean now but when I would see Layne I could see myself I really hope and pray he finally found peace god speed Layne your music will live on forever !
I was never an Alice in chains fan. It was kinda before my time a bit, and it was over played on the radio growing up so I kinda just thought it was "poser rock" or dad rock. But when I ended up getting into drugs myself, I was able to hear music for the first time again, and all may preconceived notions were proved wrong when the lyrics spoke to me, and I finally understood them for the first time. after my first month on hard drugs, but music preferences changed drastically, and bands like nirvana, and Alice in chains I really appreciated and understood. anyway. I know respect and adore Alice in chains for their contributions to music.
Thanks for you re constant work, discover new music and have a music culture is important, damn i love AIC and Jerry playing so much. Best greetings from italy
I severely miss Layne and AIC , such a shame, they were so great together but being an addict myself, suffering from depression and anxiety I can understand now from his beautiful voice and lyrics that he was a tortured soul and I pray that he is finally at peace
You can feel his begs and pleas through his voice, i think most addicts would express there voice just as Layne did, the sorrow and sadness that comes with addiction
Layne and Jerry together is amazing no two ways about it but people don’t give Jerry enough credit cause I’ll tell you Alice is JUST as good now. Rainier Fog is amazing and so are the two albums before it. Whole jar of flies and self titled are my fav rainier comes in at 3. Also Jerry’s solo albums are godsends
It's funny how two people can see the same thing in a completely different light. I've always felt Jerry not only got his share of the credit, he went out of his way to make sure of it.
I'm sorry, but AiC with William is not even close to being on the same level as the original lineup with Layne. They are better than 99% of what's out there today, but Jerry and Layne were truly something special.

I remember this time lie it was yesterday. During the ‘80’s, I was enjoying bands I loved during the ‘70’s come into their own through the ‘80’s,-ie. Scorpions, Van Halen, etc. When Grunge came along, I felt a bit lost. But when Alice In Chains came out with “Man In A Box,” I was like,”Hell yes, this is my band!”🎧
What a perfect band they were!!! It was so tough to watch layne when he was in the last days with AIC you could see he was struggling. It broke my heart 💔 I hope you’re happy now, Layne & Mike ❤️❤️ RIP
Thank you kindly for showing the world a part of my generation 90's Alison in Chains please to the younger generation Listen to these magical powerful lyrics and amazing inspired band
I am glad the current incarnation of AIC manages to honor the Staley era and still be its own thing. Jerry Cantrell is an amazing songwriter and I hope he can keep it going for years to come.
By far AIC was my most favorite band who came out of the whole Seattle grunge scene. Jerry's tone is just soo heavy and Layne's power, and his ability to express emotion through his style of singing and his lyrics. I was a thrasher, and into heavy metal so because of the tone and rhythm of Jerry's riffs it was just too easy to headbang
Great documentary. I'm watching these trying to understand addiction. I'll never understand. My husband lost his battle and I'm 14 mo later shocked and devastated. I guess the only lesson is you can't will someone to get better. You can't love them to health. All of these icons Layne, chris, chester, kurt saved millions thru their music, but paid the ultimate price. It's beyond sad.
Ive heard AiC since the early 90's but only recently have i become a big fan of their early stuff! It really fits my life right now! Continue resting layne!
Demri didn't die of a sudden overdose. She had gotten Endocarditis from IV drug use. She had been in the hospital sick. She had several operations. She died slowly over the course of a couple of years. They watched each other waste away. Layne sunk further after her death.
@@TheStepmonkey it's all out there on the internet to read her mom was very honest about it yes the heart condition helped kill her but she overdosed on pills in a guys car
I've never heard about her overdosing in a guy's car. I'm sure anything is possible. I know Mark Lanegan said in his memoir that she showed up at his place with an IV pole asking for dope. She had several operations. I know a young lady that had endocarditis and she had surgery but kept using and she passed away.i can't imagine after being on heroin, pills overdosing you. Especially back then. But I guess anything is possible. I only heard her mom say she died slowly over the course of two years. What kind of pills? Can you link her mom saying that? I'm just so fascinated with the Seattle scene. I've watched so much on Demri and everyone from that scene. I've just never seen anything referencing her death to an overdose in a car.
One of my favourite bands ever and singers of all time. No one ever can replace Laynes vocals. Just like a ton of other band leaders that unfortunately we lost too soon. 😔 he was so beautiful. But watching him die infront of the world was so tragic. His passing away has affected me a lot but i learned now to stay away from substances. I miss them. I miss him. Jerry still carries him on. Rest in peace to those that passed away by addiction. I came too close. Very close to totally giving up as well and i just want to be free of all of this self loathing. I will have peace one day. Love you AIC.
21 years later in my mid 40's crying like a baby. I lived through the passing of so many great voices, and so many family members. Back in 2021 my wife passed away in my arms. I sit here and thinking that so many of the world's best people pass on before me. As I think that I also think, does that make me one of the worst. I don't know, I just know that this life is a joke and the people that are left here are the fucked up punchlines.

This band is my fav band, but hurts to listen to, bc it was also my brother's fav band, who passed away in 2017 from drug related complications stemming from a car wreck. We were born on the same day 3 years apart, and we were closer than any other brothers I ever seen in my life. It's been a real struggle just getting by, then my best friend Sarah overdosed and passed away in 2019. So now I don't have any friends anymore. They're all dead. But I go to treatment and have been clean from hard drugs for around 2 years, and getting by day to day. Video games and music help me pass the time a lot. It's just one of those things, you just gotta keep going.
That's a hell of an achievement and I personally know how hard that sht is to go through. Well done for coming this far, be proud and please keep going!
I still remember hearing Man in the Box for the 1st time. Cantrell is one of my favorite guitar player. Genius riffs. R.I.P. Layne Staley. That was a huge blow for me; I loved AiC so much. Funny thing though, hearing Layne talk; he sounds a bit like Dave Mustaine.

Definitely my favourite Seattle / Grunge band. Such a crying shame that it ended for Layne the way it did, he was so talented and so special.
Your story isn't simple, it's actually really serious. With all due respect to you for writing this out of yourself and for making such a brave, but necessary decision in your life! Stay so strong and sober, for which I sincerely, heartily congratulate you! 👏💪(Maybe someday my time will come...) All the best dude! ✌
@@alexnagy2044 thank you! And one thing I’ve learned is there’s always hope as long as there’s a heart beat. It’s never too late. But you gotta be sick and tired of being sick and tired. Everyone’s process for both addiction and recovery is different. Don’t be afraid to reach out to anyone for help! You got people that love you and wanna see you happy and healthy! Stay strong, you got this!
I'm so sorry man. I'm currently trying to escape the grips of addiction man. It truly truly destroys everything.
@@ryanhood9420 it does, I know too well. I really hope you can get away from the grip of addiction, it’s hard yes, but very much worth it. Just take it a day at a time. I hope everything gets better for you, brother
❤
❤
This has always been my number one favorite band.... and will always be! RIP Layne and Mike!
Layne was really one in the milions of people, kind guy who was not born to be a idol but he became a legend.
Rest easy, Alice forever.
Rest in peace Layne and Mike we miss you.
You can't replace Laynes perfection and at the end he was almost dead still singing for everyone RIP Layne
He really had a unique voice
Immediately got hooked on this band when I heard Man in the Box. The video was so eery, and Layne's voice haunting.
Dirt is a great f'ing album. Still have it on vinyl. I could listen to that entire album over and over
Dude AC Speed can even narrate a 2 hour video about watching a bird outside the window and I won't skip even one second. He's got an awesome tone and flow
This was a great well put together video. Layne was such a talented dude who was gone way too soon.
From Cassette to RUclips Alice in Chains is and always be remedy🤘
😂😂😂
I ❤ AIC / Layne is the best singer in my lifetime❤ thank you for sharing. You are the only blogger to tell the whole truth of these people. I still love Layne. I try to keep him alive.
That was the best documentary about Alice in Chains I've listened to yet! Thank you!
Very well put together and narrated, thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I know AIC’s story through and through but it never gets old hearing a slightly different rendition of it.
AIC, along with Layne and Jerry’s harmonies, will always be a staple in my developing music style growing up.
What a great documentary,many thanks man👍👍👍🤘🤘
I thought I read every horror story about Layne....I never knew the stuff about his dad showing up to get money and drugs and gas lighting his addictions. This is soul crushing.....as if it wasn't bad enough. 😞
I never heard this until now either. It's just despicable. I also believe his father is still alive.
First I heard of it too. His father can rot in hell.
Isn't it amazing that most guitar legends idolize ace frehley!!
Rip 😢🕊️💔 😪 Layne Staley you were and still are a true legend of vocal God a force to be reckoned with and you can never truly be replaced you will never be forgotten much love to Layne Staley and the rest of Alice in chains ⛓️🫶🤟
All of those bands were my favorite too ! Also thank you for making this video!
Heroin is the devil incarnate. It doesn’t wait for you to die it takes your soul as it drags you through a painful existence. The tragic thing is people like Layne believe it’s too late and have lost the battle. There’s always a way out and it’s never too late.
Layne was such an all around beautiful man
Mate your videos really are something else. You must put a hell of a lot of time into researching these bands
man I know what Layne went through I was a heroin addict for years . I'm clean now but when I would see Layne I could see myself I really hope and pray he finally found peace god speed Layne your music will live on forever !
Same
I am glad you are okay now
I was never an Alice in chains fan.
Absolutely great work again, the Rock n Roll documentary director
Great Doc and images!! 🤘🏼
Can’t wait!!
He also did well as a solo artist for a little while x
TDPDH album is a masterpiece too, every song is a banger!
@@kdub7195 actually yeah you are def correct, what I meant is in my mind they are an equally good band now but a different band. I guess you really can’t compare them because they are def different but as musicians they all most def pull their weight still
Pouring out a Pepsi for Layne RIP man
You are a great channel man hope you get a shit load of subs by the end of the year
Sorry I couldn't continue watching as this video premiered.
But thank you for the quality content, keep it up.
Nd please, GLOW ON!
We lived this y’all. What a trip. This was a beautifully done documentary.
Best doc I’ve found on them subbed so fast! Well done sir!
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing.
Layne, we miss you deeply.
Shared on FB. So good... well done brother! 🧡👊🇨🇦👍🧡
Cantrell has an incredible tone both vocally and on guitar
Yea he is a legend
YEAH he does, LEGEND💯. THere will never be anyone who has better harmonies singing n playing together like Layne n Jerry C🖤🖖💯
Bogey Depot
Great documentary. I'm watching these trying to understand addiction. I'll never understand. My husband lost his battle and I'm 14 mo later shocked and devastated. I guess the only lesson is you can't will someone to get better. You can't love them to health. All of these icons Layne, chris, chester, kurt saved millions thru their music, but paid the ultimate price. It's beyond sad.
Nice footage of AIC ♡ THANK YOU
Awesome documentary man! 🤘
RIP Layne Thomas Staley🤘🕊
We love and miss you
At the end of this month (March 24th, 2023), we are playing the Unplugged Alice In Chains set in Buffalo NY and it is an honor to do so.
Great documentary!
Ive heard AiC since the early 90's but only recently have i become a big fan of their early stuff! It really fits my life right now! Continue resting layne!
Great documentary like always !
This gon be good
Great job man awesome content
Demri didn't die of a sudden overdose. She had gotten Endocarditis from IV drug use. She had been in the hospital sick. She had several operations. She died slowly over the course of a couple of years. They watched each other waste away. Layne sunk further after her death.
She died because she had taken pills and was rushed to the hospital because she slipped in to a coma although the endocarditis didn't help I'm sure
@@amberlambuth3894 No, she is right. Demri died because of a heart infection (endocarditis) due to dirty needles.
@@TheStepmonkey no she didn't she took pills slipped into a coma and was taken to the hospital and died yes the heart condition helped kill her
@@TheStepmonkey it's all out there on the internet to read her mom was very honest about it yes the heart condition helped kill her but she overdosed on pills in a guys car
Rip Layne Staley
Rip Chris Cornell
Rip Mike Starr
Rip Kurt Cobain
Rip Scott Wieland 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
And Chester
All couldn't hang the weight of Rock!!.
And Mark Lanegan. Andy Wood. Kristen Pfaff.
It’s really almost unbelievable. Kinda like having Plant, Jagger, Daltry, Gillan, Ozzy all die from their generation?
@@yetivanmarshall1473 aaahhh NO!!.
One of my fav bands of all time! Dirt is a masterpiece, R.I.P to a legend Layne Staley
Nice and classy review, thank you
*silently weeps for the loss of the 90s music scene*....
DEFENITELY 1 OF MY FAVORITE BAND ALL OF TIME! 🤩😭❤️👍
My favorite 😁 band too 😅
I always thought Layne Staley had one of the best rock voices.
He had amazing voice 🎧🎤🎸
The 90ties gave us so much wonderful music from several incredible bands. I loved it!
I love it too 😘
21 years later in my mid 40's crying like a baby.
An awesome job on this.
I was born in 1989. Sometimes I wish I had been born much earlier simply because I love instrumental/rock music. This was before the bloop bloop computer music had taken over and become most people's idea of what it is.
I just wanted to say man that your channel is so fu*king amazing dude! Like i’ve been watching your videos for a while now, not only you make them about my favorite artists all the time but god it’s well structured & presented. I feel like it’s full of research and you took the time & effort to do so. I thank you for that. If you let me i’d like to suggest some bands for you to inspire future videos such as:
Evanescence
Deftones
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Nirvana
Stone Temple Pilots
Blink-182
Sum 41
Radiohead
Thank you very much!

Great video man! Very detailed.
Really great stuff, man! Keep it up!!
Amazing documentary!!
I remember being 15 in my room hanging out and watching AIC Unplugged on MTV I was absolutely obsessed with Laynes Vocals he sounded like a Mad Angel Singing so beautifully and effortlessly ❤ Wish he hadn’t died alone the way he did😢 Wish I could have been there for him 😢 to help him through his addiction so that all of us could still hear his angelic voice singing still to this day ❤
It's truly ashame and hurts me deeply that Kurt , Layne , Mike Star , Chris Cornell and so many others could find & have what they provided for so many !
Combined they all helped me get threw so seriously low times , they helped me grow , learn about myself and continue on and I just can't imagine what they could have contributed.... extremely greatful to have found them and been able to lean on there words ,there music and be where I am today and it's so said they never found peace . I hope they have it now !!!!
Dude I found your channel couple days ago, and it's really awesome!! Keep up with the good work👍
Favorite band all time. No question. Layne still makes me cry. Crazy.
Man, the story that Layne made sure Jerry had Christmas gifts really got to me. The man made sure he went out of his way to help his friend. Unfortunately he could not help himself. To know he died alone is really sad.
you are trully a great musician thanks for sharing your music its mean a lot to me when i listento your music alice @ chain it made my work easily so idolized you guys layne#john cantrell and the rest of the band👍🤘✌️❤️❤️❤️🎼🎸
Sounded like me. "I want a Les Paul".
Mom: Whatta ya want for dinner?
Me: I want a Les Paul.
Awesome doc! How about Sean Kinney at 13:30 making the face like don't hit me with that Mike!
