it's weird seeing an interview where someone isn't getting interrupted every millisecond. All interviews should be like this, good job on Gibson's part
The only time you should be able to hear the interviewer is when they ask a question, everything else should be nothing but the person being interviewed
CIRCLE OF TONE. They need to get that guy to oversee the making of the guitars themselves, because they are still overpriced and riddled with QC issues
@@AuntAlnico4 No, if you listened at the end Jerry says they've been together for 33 years became a band in 1987 also he was getting ready to turn 54 and he was born in 1966. So it was early this yr before all of the mask wearing and Jerry's birthday is in March. So to answer your statement, NO, it was filmed in 2020. Have a great Day!
Yeah but if your kid isn't any good why would you give false hope? That's even more detrimental. When you have a kid with talent you nurture it but most people wanna be rich and famous but lets face it, most people are idiots and will be 'normal' in life and that's fine too
Agreed William does such a great job with it also. Seeing them live and feeling the frequency was perfect. I didn’t want it to end. Wish they could have play for another hour.
@rexhorning7228 u appreciate that live Jerry takes much more lead - on original AIC songs Layne sung. He should also do the lead on Rooster would love to hear it.
Thank God Layne talked Jerry into singing more. Layne's voice made these great songs perfect, but Jerry's harmony and lead vocal parts make them immortal.
Long ago, I read Jerry saying he has an unremarkable voice. It's true that his voice is not one-of-a-kind, not nearly as unique as Layne's. But he has a nice, warm, soft voice, and he sings in a truthful way, sort of the way he plays guitar. It might have something to do with his country roots. So it totally made sense that he sing, and there was a really nice contrast between their respective voices and singing that made them sound better together. The sound of them is like drinking chili pepper laced hot chocolate. Jerry was the chocolate. 😂
@@Gomba13 Cantrell doesn't have a Southern Hospitality charm laced voice - the fuck man? They're rugged as vocalists, smooth BUT LOL Country roots? Conservatives as a Country majority demographic still hate this band and in no way find them listenable. Have you ever cleaned out your ears ONCE in life?
@@murk4552 Jerry grew up listening to country thanks to his parents. He has talked about how he enjoys that style of music and how there is truth in their lyrics and how he enjoys their storytelling songs. Country music is in his roots, he grew up with it, and it's noticeable in some of his guitar work and it's also inspired his songwriting style. Maybe read slower next time. Nowhere does Gomba13 say Jerry has that country style of singing, nor do they say AIC or Cantrell's work is made for conservatives.
Ain't that the truth. I haven't followed in years, but I have listened to some of their new stuff, but, honestly, to me, that's the definitive sound of Alice in Chains. Even off one of their more recent songs there's a point where the dual vocal harmony was so eerily close (more than normal) to Layne and Jerry that it gave me goosebumps.
thats not his house, at least I don't think it is.... Jerry gave a tour of his home in Oklahoma and there was nothing like the room he is in on that tour.
He's still got a lot of years ahead of him and will continue to make great music. His career is still active and although he is HOF- qualified, there's no need because he's still active and relevant. He's an automatic shoe-in, but not retired yet. HOF in 10 or 15 years, and we're all looking forward to the music he will make in the meantime.
It's the truth though. That's how it works. It's mind boggling. When you're hungry and have that fire in your stomach you get spit on. Ehh... Perhaps the songs are better for it.
Adam Sandler said the same thing in a movie once To play devils advocate people are more likely to trust you with something if they know you can hold your own
Jerry is one of the most influential musicians of the '90s and can probably walk into any coffee shop and not be noticed. His solo stuff is the real deal man. Such a talented legend!
Well i would say your very delusional, hed been NOTHING without Layne staley, PLUS HE TREATED HIM LIKE SHIT towards the end when Layne needed him, HE KNOWS THAT! And to be honest I don't care for people like that AT ALL... PICKEM UP WHEN THEIR DOWN DOWNER THAN DOWN and how do they repay him, by dropping him like shit!
I've always said that Jerry Cantrell is the secret weapon that all other grunge bands lacked, and I still stand by that. Not that I don't love the other grunge bands, but what Jerry brings to the table is so unique and special.
Despite the era, I never really felt like Alice and Garden were grunge... Something about them eclipsed that genre. Too heavy (Alice)... Too complex/proggy (Garden)...
AIC was not grunge! They had a much darker and heavier sound. But at the same time had the best duo of vocalists! They made the most amazing music together! RIP Layne Staley! Your amazing voice will always live on!
Tim Hauck "AIC was not grunge. They had a much darker and heavier sound." The dark/heavy sound IS grunge. "Man In The Box" is as perfect an example of the grunge genre that you could ever find.
He's far more than the secret weapon. Jerry has always been the main force in AIC. He wrote 90% of the material and is the biggest component of their sound.
Layne had the weirdest harmonies he picked some weird notes but wow he was amazing it's what made them . Seattle sound with that harmony is insane !! It is what had set them apart
Great uninterrupted interview. This is what us fans want, no annoying interviewer just the maestros of their trade telling their story in their own time. Thank you.
I admire professional musicians but I also admire media people whose job it is to interview them. The true professionals among them are those who know how to make them talk all while making the conversation about the musician and taking up as little room in it themselves as possible. It's fine to see and hear the interviewer, as long as they are professionals. I do have a few favourite interviewers, you see and hear them but all they really do is highlight the interviewee. Not all interviewers are annoying as you say.
Most definitely! Don't even bring up Howard Stern. It's disgusting that whole interview. I didn't no Metallica did that to Layne at a show. Karma comes back around, James had to go to rehab just recently. It can happen to anyone, it doesn't pick favorite's. Never condemn addict's you have no clue the hell they're in. Your not yourself, your not ok.
“I still never heard someone who sounds like him and I never will”. That’s so true. Layne had such a powerful and unique voice. He was one of the greatest. It’s been 20 years already that we lost him, but he will be forever missed.
@@quadbox Well, you're just assuming it. I left other comments on this video as I was watching it, about his solo career (which I'm a huge fan), about the new Alice in Chains records. This is just one comment that got some likes and it's showing up better than others. But it's easier to judge people without knowing, isn’t it?
@@LuanaLevenhagen Assuming what? You literally wrote it. I saw another you wrote about Layne too. But that's not the point. Personally, I wish people would let us celebrate Jerry without having to bring up the tragedy of Layne. He is an important part of Jerry's story, but not one that needs to be dragged up on every freaking occasion. Let the man live.
@@quadbox You assumed that I only talked about Layne after watching the whole interview, which is not true. You only found another comment of mine that had some likes and because of that it was easier to find, but I also left comments talking exclusively about Jerry solo career and how I was happy with the new record. Now, I don't see the problem to also comment about Layne in a interview that Jerry himself talked several times about him and Alice in Chains early years. I'm a huge fan of Jerry, his solo work and the new lineup of AIC and the last 3 records. Saw them live twice. I don't go talking about Layne in everything they do or post. But Layne was a fundamental part of Alice in Chains and there's nothing wrong to talk about him and remember him even after all those years. Also, lots of bands end up after the singer dies, so that's why I talked about in the other comment that I was glad they didn’t. Now I know that there are people who only talk about Layne and don't show interest for AIC and Jerry new stuff, but I'm not one of them.
Everything that's wrong with interviews today was seemingly fixed in this one.. no obnoxious, overly pretentious host interrupting every 5 seconds, just Jerry telling it like it is.
his house, his rules..... Jerry is a quick thinking speaker & storyteller...and so cool & down to earth, someone you could have some pretty deep conversations with.
Most GOOD musicians don’t hold their self in high esteem. If you watch interviews of Chris Adler, Scott Weiland, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, etc., they’re normally fairly humble and just want to talk about their love for music and their lives around it.
Patrick Bateman that’s pretty hardcore to say dude..I’ve read and saw documentaries of the guys saying they would go buy Layne’s condo and even stand and yell for him but he shut them out. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE Layne..he is my favorite member, along with Cantrell. It does suck that he had to be found in such a manner...damn..I’m so sorry Layne. Imagine how they might feel js
Patrick Bateman that’s not even accurate, you sound like an idiot and a racist. Layne wouldn’t accept help from anyone in the band. Layne Jerry Sean and mike loved each other, those guys were brothers
The solo to Nutshell is one of the most expressive and heart wrenching solos I've ever heard. I'm glad they included it. Jar of Flies is a masterpiece.
When I first heard and read that people thought it was their best album I was like, huh!?!... probably because I was still so in love with Dirt, but now I agree, perhaps because I've mellowed with age, idk.... but Nutshell is probably the saddest thing ever recorded, and quite possibly the most beautiful
I love the fact that this is about the artist and mentioning another brand is not a marketing "no-go" zone. It's just an authentic story. Thanks Gibson!
Yeah I thought the same. Maybe all the "psychological consequences" the pandemic is bringing forth are kind of making those boundaries go and let the artists express themselves without self-censoring somehow.
@@oscarHarrison-pp3ky There was addiction issues and gigs lost among other things which caused resentment. With time it's easier to just let it go and remember the good. They sure did have something special.
I think that when you have a best friend, when there were times of great challenge and frustration, even anger, a suddenly that friend is gone all the frustration is gone too. You'd give anything to have them back, but you can't and the things that you remember (unless you're jaded and can't forgive) are the good. That's what remains. You remember their smile, voice, the good times, the love. You bury everything else with them. That said, I watched a lot of these interviews, and this one is definitely one of the best.
This was so cool, Couldn't stop watching.. How could anyone give this a thumbs down??!!. Would love to just sit and chill listening to some music stories while listening to some killer Rock music.. Jerry is such a Badass ❤️😎
What really lept-out to me was his complete and utter loyalty to Layne. Not ONE word of gossip, negativity or any even 'veiled' allusion to Layne's problems. Chapeau, Jerry. What a wonderful guy you are.
@@evilmachines9929Ha! Yeah. Of course I did. But here's what I mean: I saw AIC four times live with Layne. And that's what I'm talking about ... extreme restraint even when he (Jerry) was quite angry. I saw the second to last show Layne ever did, 7/2/1996 opening for KISS. You could cut the tension with a knife and Jerry was clearly furious, but ... no disparaging remarks or press interviews that I know of.
I teared up when Jerry spoke about putting himself in his father's shoes for the song rooster. "Could I have done any better" hit me like a ton of bricks.
Rooster was the quintessential song of the early 90’s. Never knew the meaning, I was just a young teenager, but man I loved that song. Now it’s so clear and pure
My band had the privilege of touring with Jerry for a couple months during the Degradation Trip era. The dude overflows with the most down-to-earth kindness you'll ever encounter. Such a generous and gracious host. Icon is an understatement!
Thats amazing. Really, as a guitar player I am continuously listening and learning from jerrys work. I'm glad he is finally getting his recognition. Many of us in his alice days did not realize he actually sings in most of their catalog. And jar was mostly his work in terms of arranging composing, it was his baby. But so many of us singled out layne because he was the face of this band. I guess thats like the Beatles having the face of Lennon. So most of jerrys recognizable success came after aic disbanded and he finally stepped out of the shadows and produced boggy and his solo masterpiece d trip. As jerry now has toured and played with all his lengdary guitar 🎸 heros, he earned the right to be seen as an icon. But through all that he is so grounded, humble, and continues to thank those who put him there. That you got that chance to tour with him, thats incredible. An experience you'll always be grateful for and can relive in your mind as you grow older. As a musician thats priceless. I hope you still perform yourself as being a musician is an phenomenal 🎁 one must share with the 🌎. Good luck to you, keep rockin😎
I saw that tour in Glasgow and the support band was comes with the fall who also played as Jerry's band if I remember correctly. Did your band do the US tour?
Cantrell is the David Gilmore of the grunge era. His ability to get the most out of each note..to make you feel each note, to not burden the ear with superfluous filler.... Gilmore and Cantrell are very similar in this regard... maybe that's why they are 2 of my top 5 favorite guitar players.
Definitely agree. I’ve teared up on three guitar notes or riffs/solos that I can recall in my life. Jerry’s solo on whale and wasps, Gilmores on mother and pages riff on ten years gone.
It’s funny you say that because I was talking about how I worship music and to me Gilmour is the Father, Jerry Cantrell is the Son, Layne is the Spirit, Cornell is the Angel and Vedder is the Prophet. That’s my godhead
This is proof and a great example of how deeply talented people are still "real people" and how they come from real places and real situations. What an awesome story. I very much enjoyed this. Thank you.
This is onlyyy proof, that we all possess talent. It comes to some for certain things Mucha easier than others, that's for sure. But enthusiasm and how bad you want something...it's everything.the only thing when it comes to doing whatever it is that one does that brings joy
You are a badass Rex! Pantera's Legacy is none other then the cream of the crop. You are the shoulders that the metal world is standing on now brother!!!!
Gained huge respect for Gibson with this video. Not once did I feel like I was being "pitched" a Gibson. It was all about the history and background of an Idol of mine. It's awesome that he's now a Gibson artist, but it's just one piece of a big, complex artist's puzzle and life story. Mad props to Gibson for this - very classy.
My prize guitar is a 57 Les Paul jr. Electric with no serial number, it was one of the prototypes. Mars music is selling one for 10 grand, mine is beat up so prolly only worth a couple grand but I want to be buried with it.
Nik C he’s had Gibson’s in his arsenal Just as long. Maybe the deal with g&l inhibited promo shots with his Gibson’s but if you’ve seen aic live you’ve seen st least a couple Les pauls come and go through the set.
"Everybody gives me everything for free now when I can totally afford it, when I couldn't afford it nobody gave me anything" 00:40:45 God damn, that's deep.. I love all Jerry's stories of friendship and gratitude
Thats life for many folks out the in the US. When your young just strting out especially with kids and need money we scrape by. We save for retirement and have wealth when all the kids out of the house. But I think to really appreciate what you have in life, you need to work for it
Jerry's and Alice in Chains story told by Jerry... this has been one of the most Honest interviews that I have seen in a while. No fluf , filler or BS. His genuine and humble demeanor speaks volume about his character. An inspiration for anyone. Thank you Gibson and Jerry Cantrell.
I've always felt like Jerry is criminally underrated, but reading all these comments and realizing so many people feel just like me about this guy really fills my heart with joy.
So underrated. This guy is a living legend. Can't even imagine how his life was tough and he still managed to get where he is today. Time passes and Jerry is becoming classy, but his tone still remain powerful and kickin. Thank you, Gibson!
Arthur i agree with you. He is so underrated. I remember in my teen years when i first heard AIC it didnt get me at the time. Now many years later i think this guy is one of the best guitarrists ever. He plays with feeling, his guitar tone is amazing, heavy, huge. One of my heroes.
Gibson TV feature him in his own episode, along side Bob Rock and Tony Iommi… let alone the fact he is widely celebrated and respected, especially amazing for a musician who plays such dark and non-mainstream music. So no, not underrated, but legend, yes.
@@Didibotts I kinda disagree. Just look at Nirvana and how they made success, Alice In Chains deserves the same recognition, and don't forget about how much shit they went on Clash of Titans tour, no band in the planet were so persistent to make a full tour with everyone throwing shit at them. Also, I say underrated because the newest albuns are criticized by a lot of people that say "no Layne no Chains". This is so disrespectful for his work and they can't accept the fact Cantrell is the soul of the band. Not to mention his solo stuff, which speaks a lot and not everyone knows. So for me yes, underrated.
@Arthur True. They’re new stuff is actually good but when you’ve had THE Layne as your lead singer in the band nothing can come close. But I think if Duval had always been the lead singer then people would love their new stuff.
He's so down to earth. It really broke my heart that some of the people he talks about having these amazing relationships with (Layne, EVH, Chris Cornell) are people who have passed.
Sitting here realizing I've been smiling pretty much the whole time I've been watching. Bc I'm thoroughly impressed with his composing and Layne's voice. Also, I find stories of people going from obscurity to legendary fascinating!
Yeah man! At almost 50 now, I find myself, more and more, just sitting back and listening to playlists of our lost musical treasures. Many of these dudes laid very important foundational blocks of my younger teen-20-something life. Powerful it is that still today when I hear certain songs......I am taking right back to a time that I will most likely never experience again. Back then there was only the future of endless possibilities. Time, the great equalizer.
Perhaps it's me but it seems there is also a 1967 club too. Think about it, Kurt, Layne, Scott Weiland, Anna nicole smith, Chris Benoit ,eddie guerrero ,etc,
I always come back and watch this from time to time. I love hearing Jerry’s story and his early influences and his absolute love for music of all genres. Here I am back, watching this again after Rick Beato just put up his amazing interview with Jerry.
So true.. i love the honesty, humility, and awareness Jerry has. He isn’t embarrassed about his roots and has worked so hard his whole career. What a story.
Some of my youngest musical memories as a 4 year old child back in ‘99 was jumping up and down rocking out to Alice when my parents were playing it over the CD player. Forever nostalgic to me, this man helped influence me picking up a guitar. A truly diverse player, Cantrell is one of the finest we’ve ever been blessed with. Thank you Gibson for bringing this intimate video.
Facelift for me is sensational. We Die Young is such an underrated song in their catalog. Every song on that album is a riff masterclass. We Die young and man in the box for me set the standard. But tracks like sea of sorrow, bleed the freak, I can’t remember, it ain’t like that, sunshine, put you down and real thing are amazing riffs. Then Staley’s vocals shine on every track.. drums are sick and a steady bass. Layne blows away love hate love.. it’s such an underrated album
It totally is. I heard it late in my love for AIC. Dirt and others were my first go-to’s, but when I found Facelift, I fall in love and listened on repeat. I just so happened to be moving to Texas right after, and a station in Waco played 3-4 songs off Facelift multiple times a day in ‘04. 14 years after its unpopular release. Texans LOVE them some AIC.
Sunshine has one of the best lines in a song. Period. " Then some dude came down to touch Mother. Mother touched, and dude ain't here no more". Just spine-tingling. "Put you down", and "I know somethin", are 2 more songs that I could listen to forever...
This is the best interview ever. I was so heartbroken & teary towards the end when Nutshell started playing. Jerry Cantrell & his music has inspired me in ways I can't even begin to describe. AIC has helped me get out of my bed & live. My heart heals and breaks every time I listen to AIC because I know how special they really are. RIP Layne & Star. Jerry Cantrell is really the backbone of the band and his contribution is worth all the gold in this world. Thank you for this interview.
And this is why we shouldn't cut music programs from public schools. We should actually make them mandatory. In the interview, Jerry said rocking out in music class was a huge joy and shaped the direction he went in.
Jerry is a quintessential renaissance man. He said the music he’s makes in Alice belongs to anyone who listens to it, too. In all my life there are no other songs I have so deeply felt, lived and carry on with more than from Alice In Chains - thier music/videos take me back, move me forward and rock it back again. I’m with you guys til the end.
Shawn Patricio We’ve were young during a time music was changing. The emotion. I’ve never read words like that before. Lyrics that hit that hard. Backed by riffs made my hair stand and my skin crawl. I was young at the right time. The time when Alice In Chains and Soundgarden change music forever. I rock them when need to connect with those time. To remember when I was so young and free. Cursed and broken. Today, I am because I never gave up on that lifestyle: Love Hate Love, Brother! Thanks for writing, Shawn!
I think AIC(and Soundgarden a notch below) were the absolute elite out of that scene. I find it humorous that Nirvana and PJ are in the HoF. No knock on them, but they can't touch AIC or SG. STP I never viewed in the same category. I like those first four records, but haven't played them in a long time.
I love this interview format! Its really like hearing Jerry just telling personal stories with a kick ass soundtrack, which is what im here for. Such a gifted, and i still think underrated musician, but at the same time such a relatable human being.
This was great...no interviewer...just Jerry telling stories. He is an interesting person. I like him more after having the opportunity to hear him speak on his own and to talk about what he wants to talk about. I had seen him interviewed before and he seemed annoyed somehow by the interviewers. He seems much more likable without the interviewers directing the conversation. I can only listen to Alice & Chains periodically. I love the music, but the album Dirt is too sad for me to listen to every day. I like a variety of music. I haven't heard the newer stuff, but will check it out. Edit: I have been listening to Rainier Fog and I could listen to this much more frequently than Dirt. It rocks and is not as dark as I found Dirt to be. I dig it.
@@kurtdahle I figured there might be one when he appeared to be responding to questions/statements. A lot of interviewers are too obtrusive. Jerry is a good storyteller and does not appear to need to have things dragged out of him.
@@SamLowry_DZ-015 I totally know what you mean, I didn't really realize until a good friend of mine that does filming of real estate told me you need to ask questions in any sort of video like this
The problem with a lot of interviews is that they only have so little time to ask questions, so they all tend to ask the same ones, whether they intend to or not. The band being what it is, at least one of those questions is going to end up being about his dead bandmate. How many times do you want people bringing up a dead friend? Because people have been asking about Layne for 18 years. And what it boils down to is "yeah, he's still dead, and I miss him, what else do you wanna ask me about?"
AIC is one of those bands where their song comes on the radio and you go, "I've heard this! Fuck yeah!" And then you go find their albums and realize you've heard all of their stuff. Jar of Flies is still one of the most perfect albums to my ears. No skipping, no fast forwarding. Every instrument is played to perfection and if any one of them was missing, you'd know.
Yeah, I miss the era of LPs, where you'd spend an hour listening to the same band and it wouldn't feel like a bunch of short stories but like one story broken down into chapters.
I was born in the early 2000s but when I was a little kid a lot of the music from the 90s would play in the house and when I got older I would hear some of the songs I remembered as a little kid but didn't know what they were called and discovered why they were so good.
@TreeGrower I'm pretty sure that "I Stay Away" got a ton of play back then. "Don't Follow" is probably my favorite on that album. The whole EP is killer. So is SAP.
The MTV unplugged set is why I'm watching this video. I recently discovered it and it's sent me down this Alice in chains rabbit hole. It's one of the best live performances in music history along with queen live aid. Seeing Layne sing with that type of emotion and soul was just incredible.
It is one of my favorites and you could tell it is special for them too because it was a different type of performance and it was their first performance in like 1 or 2 years.
Alice in chains...the best of the so called "Grunge" bands IMO..gave the dull same ole rock of the 80s- 90s a big kick in th arse..i could listen to Jerry for hours..a good dude and a legendary riff miester
Agreed....you just can't top layne. Ppl like Cobain, Chester bennington...Cornell etc...but Staley was the real jewel I think....and the harmonies between him and Jerry....mind blowing
@Chris Le Guen Agreed. Kurt gets a lot of shit from people though cause he wasn’t really the best at anything. But Kurt is Kurt and he’s a rock god and legend.
“I still never heard anybody that sounds like him and probably never will”. Jerry Cantrell on the late great voice of Layne Thomas Staley. RIP Layne. Jerry Cantrell, you are a class act. Such a cool down to earth type of guy. Would make a great and interesting neighbor.
Tim Williams from Long Island's VISION OF DISORDER and BLOODSIMPLE was clearly influenced by Layne when he does his singing parts (he also mixes the singing with growling and screaming, whispering, talking, etc.). VOD is to hardcore/metalcore what AIC was to grunge: so far ahead of their time that they were underappreciated compared to the greats like Killswitch Engage and Nirvana, respectively.
I agree ! you can tell he was very influenced by Iommi .. probably more than any other player , as far as his riffs . He took that style and managed to put his own style on it . Love AIC
Such a cool interview, I met Layne in an elevator at a hotel in LA, just small talk, I was Marine EOD doing Secret Service support for a visiting dignitary, being a AIC fan just said hey dig AIC so much. Never forget it, immediately after that OP went and got a tattoo of some of Layne's artwork on my left arm. Rest in Peace Layne, Jerry thanks so much for the kick ass music over the years, you r0ck! Gibson TV thanks for this... Long Live Alice in Chains...
Found AIC in College and it became the soundtrack of my youth. Still takes me back to college, friends, girls and parties. Nowadays I'm a Dad, with a job and endless fun projects at home. A few times a week, I'll crank up Would?, grab a broomstick mic and sing along at the top of my lungs like I'm Layne. It's my way of staying young. Sometimes my daughter will even jump in and sing along! Thanks Gibson for a great interview. I felt like I was sitting with Jerry in my living room. Met all these guys in Louisville on their first tour with William after Layne died. Had a meet and greet pass, plus front row tickets. They were so nice to all the fans and the show was 2hrs of perfection. Seeing and hearing Jerry play the Nutshell solo 5' from my face will forever be one of my greatest memories. Stars today should take a lesson in humility from Jerry.

RNRHOF doesn't even really matter in grand scheme of music anymore. I think someone as humble as him realizes it and knows what his contribution to music is and has been. AIC are bad ass and they don't need RNRHOF to tell them so.
Most interviews are 50% interviewer. This is 100% Jerry . Absolutely amazing that this happened at all, or was even edited this way. Pure joy to watch Jerry in his own words!!! You rock my brotha, thank you for the music!

Alice In Chains is THE greatest band to ever face this earth I love them with my whole heart MY HEART I’m obsessed and have been for some time. They just have such a unique sound and I can listen to their albums over and over again. I always find something new. The guitar riffs, guitar tone, Layne’s voice or Sean’s drumming. It all fits so well. They just speak to me so perfectly. I love it. I love them. So much.
I've always hated the term "Grunge" Jerry is just a straight up Rock God. He proved that good music is good music whether it be soft or heavy he could do it and do them well.
Even reviewers I respect use “grunge” as a genre term which drives me batty! Grunge as a look or a lifestyle makes some sense but as a musical term it’s meaningless.
Thank you. Its sooooo stupid. And most of the bands who supposedly were “grunge” have little in common besides coming out of Seattle. Besides Nirvana was really a post punk outlier and them being from Aberdeen/DC definitely was apparent in their sound
Jerry is such an incredible songwriter. When people are in dark places, dark music often seems to help. Maybe it's an empathy thing; you feel like someone else gets it. I don't know. In any case, it's something Jerry excels at as a songwriter. As Dimebag Darrell said of Jerry (paraphrasing), "His guitar playing is brutally honest. Better than someone who plays a million notes." Also, an Icons episode with Adam Jones would be epic.
@@brucelee4996 I know right how fucking thoughtful of the dude, “ when I was poor I never got any of the gear I wanted but now everyone gives stuff to me so I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen to you”. it's weird seeing an interview where someone isn't getting interrupted every millisecond. All interviews should be like this, good job on Gibson's part
this doesn't even seem like an interview, just a good ol' storytelling scenario that we all enjoy
its such a great style of interview, edited out the interviewer and questions
Absolutely agree, it’s perfectly executed. More interviewers in other industries should follow suit.
Agree do I my Lord
The only time you should be able to hear the interviewer is when they ask a question, everything else should be nothing but the person being interviewed

@@gibsonguitar great interview! I love not hearing the interviewer at times.
Same. Wow.
Thank God Layne talked Jerry into singing more. Layne's voice made these great songs perfect, but Jerry's harmony and lead vocal parts make them immortal.
Agreed. The harmonies really made them stand out.

I wouldn't mind Howard Stern interviewing him.
@@brucelee4996 it would be Howard talking for an hour
I admire professional musicians but I also admire media people whose job it is to interview them. The true professionals among them are those who know how to make them talk all while making the conversation about the musician and taking up as little room in it themselves as possible. It's fine to see and hear the interviewer, as long as they are professionals. I do have a few favourite interviewers, you see and hear them but all they really do is highlight the interviewee. Not all interviewers are annoying as you say.
Most definitely! Don't even bring up Howard Stern. It's disgusting that whole interview. I didn't no Metallica did that to Layne at a show. Always seems to work out that way doesn't it
I knew there would be people who would watch an hour and sixteen minute video on Jerry and all they would comment on is Layne and how they miss him...

Most GOOD musicians don’t hold their self in high esteem.
If you watch interviews of Chris Adler, Scott Weiland, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, etc., they’re normally fairly humble and just want to talk about their love for music and their lives around it.

I think that when you have a best friend, when there were times of great challenge and frustration, even anger, a suddenly that friend is gone all the frustration is gone too. You'd give anything to have them back, but you can't and the things that you remember (unless you're jaded and can't forgive) are the good. That's what remains. Definitely agree. I’ve teared up on three guitar notes or riffs/solos that I can recall in my life. Jerry’s solo on whale and wasps, Gilmores on mother and pages riff on ten years gone.
They are two of my favorites as well. The absence of notes is what is memorable.
It’s funny you say that because I was talking about how I worship music and to me Gilmour is the Father, Jerry Cantrell is the Son, Layne is the Spirit, Cornell is the Angel and Vedder is the Prophet. That’s my godhead

Dude, Jerry's memory is impeccable
Some of my youngest musical memories as a 4 year old child back in ‘99 was jumping up and down rocking out to Alice when my parents were playing it over the CD player. Forever nostalgic to me, this man helped influence me picking up a guitar. A truly diverse player, Cantrell is one of the finest we’ve ever been blessed with. Thank you Gibson for bringing this intimate video.
Wow! Your parents sound amazing!
CD players and CDs really need to come back
Juan Valdez Vinyl Baby..Vinyl!! The “best” format for actually listening pleasure🔊🔊🔊
That's a lovely story, Dick Smoker
Woops, typo/Spellcheck! 😂 *Nick* the Smoker...
Love hate love has the baddest ass breakdown ever atvthe ebd
Agreed! It's my fave AIC album.
Sunshine has one of the best lines in a song. Period.
" Then some dude came down to touch Mother.
Mother touched, and dude ain't here no more".
Just spine-tingling.
"Put you down", and "I know somethin", are 2 more songs that I could listen to forever...
Facelift. That album is pure perfection.
Well said. You saved me the trouble of saying it. 👍🏽
Same here bro..til the end
Christopher Strebeck: The lyrics, vocals, guitars, drum and bass lines. Thete will never be another! AIC til The End! (Likewise)
Me too
Shawn Patricio We’ve were young during a time music was changing.
Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, and Soundgarden are still my favorite bands from the early 1990's.
Jerry is one humble dude, mad respect!
I love stp
STP yes,classic first four albums
Nice
I think AIC(and Soundgarden a notch below) were the absolute elite out of that scene. I find it humorous that Nirvana and PJ are in the HoF. No knock on them, but they can't touch AIC or SG.
STP I never viewed in the same category. I like those first four records, but haven't played them in a long time.
@@docvader82 completely agree with this
I love this interview format! Its really like hearing Jerry just telling personal stories with a kick ass soundtrack, which is what im here for. Such a gifted, and i still think underrated musician, but at the same time such a relatable human being.
Thanks for watching!
I dig it.
dont realize it..but there is an interviewer, you have to have one
Black Gives Way To Blue is the best of the Post-Staley material IMO. But all good.
Agreed. That record is perfect.
@TreeGrower I'm pretty sure that "I Stay Away" got a ton of play back then. "Don't Follow" is probably my favorite on that album. The whole EP is killer. So is SAP.
Great comment about jar of flies. It is a perfect record and I save it for certain times to play beginning to end.
This should be categorized as “educational “. This will inspire many young musicians dreaming of a path forward. Amazing.
The MTV unplugged set is why I'm watching this video. I recently discovered it and it's sent me down this Alice in chains rabbit hole. It's one of the best live performances in music history along with queen live aid. Seeing Layne sing with that type of emotion and soul was just incredible.
Down in a (rabbit) hole
@@brandonromano315 well said 🤝
It is one of my favorites and you could tell it is special for them too because it was a different type of performance and it was their first performance in like 1 or 2 years.
@@malcorub It's crazy they were that brilliant after a couple of years off.

@@monicajean37 Now is your chance!
@@stephenstuckey You are so right! Layne had the voice that could sing the birds out of the trees then scare them shitless..damn shame
@Chris Le Guen Agreed. Kurt gets a lot of shit from people though cause he wasn’t really the best at anything. But Kurt is Kurt and he’s a rock god and legend.
Odd that I watched this after I found out Eddie Van Halen passed...both are beautiful people who can kick ass playing guitar
He is the type of guy you want to sit and have a beer with and talk music all day.
I would just like to thank that teacher who taught jerry to do acapella. His and laynes voice was the perfect match.
Layne had a unique voice,
Tim Williams from Long Island's VISION OF DISORDER and BLOODSIMPLE was clearly influenced by Layne when he does his singing parts (he also mixes the singing with growling and screaming, whispering, talking, etc.). VOD is to hardcore/metalcore what AIC was to grunge: so far ahead of their time that they were underappreciated compared to the greats like Killswitch Engage and Nirvana, respectively.
Jerry Cantrell is a cross between Tony Iommi and Keith Richards when it comes to riffs. I idolize/worship this man
ummmm jerry nor alice in chains is “underrated”. Underrated bands dont make it 30+yrs
I agree ! you can tell he was very influenced by Iommi .. probably more than any other player , as far as his riffs . He took that style and managed to put his own style on it . Love AIC
@@tysoncott7402 Except Rush. Getting into the Rock and Roll HOF. Took them 40 years. Others, IMHO, didn't deserve it as much. My 2 Cents.
He is a legend. I have listened to AIC and his solo work since 1992. What a great interview.
Thank you for making me feel less alone in the world Jerry Cantrell
At first I thought "humm, 1h16m is too much". Then he starts to talk... and here I am wanting more.
What year was that?
Alice in chains is the greatest band ever to come out of seattle they should be in the hall of fame their music means so much to so many people
I am a “forever Cobain” fan, but I completely agree with you. AIC is…perfect.
I'm in Louisville too, Kentucky right? I wish I had the honor, same with Layne....SMH
90's Seattle bands are helping me cope during Covid.
Shit man this feels weird, discovered AIC in 2019 in college and I'm still in college, feels weird reading this message even so msny years apart from your life.
@@davidbrevik888 That's awesome man! Just goes to show that AIC is going to be timeless and span many generations. That's the beauty of great music. Don't forget to listen to the other greats from that time and era, especially anything related to Chris Cornell. One of the greatest singers of all time. I'm still in college myself, finally completing my MBA at 45yrs young. Keep rockin' my friend!
@@davidbrevik888 same here man! I've been listening since 2019 and I'm still in college as well. Quickly became my favorite band! They really are timeless. Having lived in Seattle my whole life I can't believe I didn't listen to them more before.
I’m not saying this just because I’m a huge fan of Jerry and AIC but this is the best Icons videos I’ve seen
AIC should be in RRHOF already.
Absolutely
Totally!! It’s a crime that they’re still not in there!
Doesnt matter. RRHOF has lost any and all credibility and meaning it once had.
You are 100% correct it’s time to start pressuring those assholes come on Janet Jackson??? Let’s get it done.
RNRHOF doesn't even really matter in grand scheme of music anymore. I think someone as humble as him realizes it and knows what his contribution to music is and has been. AIC are bad ass and they don't need RNRHOF to tell them so.
With out any doubt a legend... This group of guys saved me more then once. Thank you for the years of amazing music, your talent will never fade..
Most interviews are 50% interviewer. This is 100% Jerry . Absolutely amazing that this happened at all, or was even edited this way. Pure joy to watch Jerry in his own words!!! You rock my brotha, thank you for the music!
Not only is Jerry an absolute Masterclass Musician, he's also the coolest Cat ever. One of the absolute GREATS!!!
For some reason he reminds me of Tom Petty. Except his hair is longer

Alice In Chains is THE greatest band to ever face this earth
I love them with my whole heart
MY HEART I’m obsessed and have been for some time.
They just have such a unique sound and I can listen to their albums over and over again. I always find something new. The guitar riffs, guitar tone, Layne’s voice or Sean’s drumming. It all fits so well. They just speak to me so perfectly. I love it. I love them. So much.
Agree 100%, my favorite band of all time. Feels like Jerry is writing songs for me.
Best band ever for real.
I love Jerry but I think you misspelled Led Zeppelin 😂
Yep. Me too!!!!
Fuc yess!
They were metal.
Better than someone who plays a million notes."
Also, an Icons episode with Adam Jones would be epic.
X2 for the Adam Jones suggestion. 🤘
He is one of the best songwriters that have ever existed, a true legend💗
I just love that his class happened about 35 years ago and he is this famous guitarist and he still calls his old teacher Mr. Hall
If you have a great teacher your respect remains for them for the most part, the rest of your life.
How cool is that EVH story? What a legend! R.I.P.
