One of the few bands that I liked all their albums And really like the dinosaur album not sure about Rainier fog yet....I take that back I like Rainer fog too now
Dirt is a fantastic album! For me, it’s the best of those Seattle albums hands down. However, Facelift is my favorite Alice album. Just the riffs of that album... We die young is such an underrated track! It’s easily one of their 5 best songs and maybe Cantrell’s best riff. Imo anyway lol. But hey.. I also believe Led Zeppelin ii is Zep’s greatest album lol when most people say iv. Iv is fantastic, but ii does it for me personally. Same with Facelift
jerry has always been one of the nicest dudes in the music biz. ran into him many times over the years and he has always been just lovely. laid back, modest, just a cool dude.
Cantrell's huge tone is as iconic as Tony Iommi I would say. Of course Iommi is a big influence on his riffing and phrasing but I think he has enough distinguishable characteristics as well.
I'm a drummer mainly, but I also play other stuff. One of them is guitar. My main influence is Jerry Cantrell. Cantrell and Dimebag are my fav guitarists, but I can't keep up to Dime's riffs and solos. As far as Jerry go, I know a lot of AIC riffs, but they're not that easy. And solos? I only know a couple. Plus, Jerry shreds the guitar AND sings!!! Both guitarists are legends. We are lucky that Jerry is still around.
Jerry has one of the best guitar tones around in my humble opinion. Thank you for This post. Also it looks like he got another Ernie ball EVH guitar to replace the one that was stolen.
Tom Brino hahahaha dude awesome!!! I really felt bad about that guitar being stolen off him that after I had seen that initial interview. I never thought he'd find it. It would be be cool if you had documented the whole recovery process with pictures video and everything. Great job man you can tell how much it really meant to him and us fans as well.
Jerry cantrell has always been by far the most talented and soulful player I have ever heard , he is the reason why I play guitar and I feel he is the hendrix of my generation
That guy has the real sound . Sure there are shredders that can play fast shit but Jerry plays one note better than most guitarist playing 20 notes a second . Jerry can shred too but he is more into making a solo work than show off speed . This guy has excellent style . I hope the bears don't chase him anymore.
The lead tone on Whale & Wasp is incredible. It's so mournful and hopeful, and with all that sustain. That's what guitar playing is imo, it's the phrase and the tone together which is really saying something.
Jerry Cantrell.....what can I say about this man? He's got it all without the "iconic rock star" attitude. Hes down to earth, easy going, very personable, he's got the best laugh ans my I say he has the voice of an angel!!!!! I adore this man!
I agree, personally I don't much care for the whole Seattle sound of the 90's whatever ya call it, although I occasionally like to listen to Rooster or maybe Nutshell, but yeah Jerry is a cool dude, I don't know how Jerry now compares to himself back in the 90's cause a lot of those guys from that scene had a real introverted (and I mean almost depressive introverted) personality, but yeah, I think Jerry now has a still reserved, but laid back, mellow personality, like he's much more at peace now than when AIC first started, but still does hard hittin', emotional songs.
words cannot express how excited i am to see this man still rocking, looking and sounding great. Amazing how they still censor him in 2018 on the internet tho ahahha 2:14 or 5:44 and even 11:15 ahahahaha!! he's the only man who can fake a punch to a rig rundown host
If I could sit down for a beer with any famous person, without a doubt it would be Jerry Cantrell. What a cool guy and a truly gifted musician. Jerry, if you’re ever in Denver area, beers are on me.
Most versatile badass guitarist ever! He can compose soothing tones like in nutshell to killer riffs like in them bones and grind etc..much respect Mr Cantrell.
The guy looks and sounds like a down to earth dude. Sure he is aware of his fame and his millions of dollars, but in the end he humbles himself in music. I don't think he realizes how transcendental and influential he's become. By far one of the best musicians of all time.
Nick Bowcott is the best! He is so detail oriented and understands what the guitarists want to know, made me very happy to find out he was at Sweetwater. I used to go to Tower Records to buy the British guitar magazines to get his playing and gear reviews.
Jerry's a laid back guy. I remember him back in high school hanging around the keg parties and what-not. There were a lot of good players in the South Tacoma/Spanaway area. Tons of cool garage bands.
During his solo days on The Boggy Depot album, he ventured to Fayetteville AR, around 98, and I got to meet him. Sadly, he wasn't very friendly, because some jerk during that small concert tossed ciggs on the stage, hitting the drummer. He's much more relaxed here, knew he was a super dude. Signed my Sap album.
Hey Jerry I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I'm talking with friends of mine and we were thinking that it would be awesome for you to have a radio station. You are 1 of the best and know all about the other grunge bands there too. I'm just putting that out there I'm sure people are trying to get you to do stuff all the time Thanks!!!
Awesome stuff man!! Jerry you are a giant inspiration to me and my guitar playing. Alice in chains is one of the greatest bands of all time!! You play with such conviction and with such a unique tone. I listen to your music everyday! So happy you guys are still Rockin thank you !! RIP Layne Stayley
All of his guitars have that classic feel and sexy curves . None of these pointy abstract shapes that look so dorky nowadays ! Hey Mr. Cantrell , I got alot of shapes that I drew while I flunked high school back in mid to late eighties .I mostly ignored my schoolwork . Wanna see them!? Thank you.
So cool!! Jerry is the tone master! How could they NOT talk about the yellow EVH that’s hanging right there?! That’s the one that got stolen and resurfaced 18 years later!
Rig Tour? Got some guitars here, not going to pull those out. Also got this rack of effect and switchers etc, not going look at those either. Awesome Thanks!
In terms of guitars, Jerry has always been a Les Paul and a G&L Rampage guy. The one guitar the guy should have asked about it that EVH Goldtop. That guitar was lost for 18 years . That guitar was recently brought back to Jerry thanks to two fans who found it and contacted him.
He was using a Firebird when Alice was touring with Korn about 2 years ago. The story behind the drop D tuning was actually Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil, according to another video.
Jerry and AIC have always had the best sound. Or at least the sound I enjoyed the most of all rock guitars. It's gritty grunge but there is definitely a bit of country influence there. Sounds so western and authentic. It's my favorite.
The interviewer should have talked about those because those are special. Eddie gave Jerry 2 guitars after AIC opened for Van Halen when AIC was just starting out. Completely surprised him when he came home from touring. That gold top was lost for 18 years (stolen during the Deg Trip recording) and recently brought back to him thanks to 2 fans who tracked it down.
Rockart9 I was one of the people involved with the return. All I can say is that it was so cool to see it get back to Jerry. The guitar means a lot to him and the band.
Jerrys G&L Superhawkdeluxe is fabulous for a great price, plays and sounds better than my Pauls and Juniors. Get one and you'll get all the Jerry tones.
It's almost impossible to get that G&L. His G&L Rampage signature guitar is discontinued? IDK I can never ever see it on sale anywhere, not even in G&L's official website
I am surprised he didn't give credit to Kim Thayil for the drop tunnings, I am sure that I had heard before in an interview with Kim Thayil that Jerry was asking way back about what tuning he used on the song Nothing to Say , and from that point on Alice in Chains became a different sounding band.
would have love to see the guitars too, maybe a little play . but I see a quiet ,reserved dude who's kinda shy or kinda got him on the move and wanted to be pleasant and get on to moving on to the next gig or something. just an observation.
Jerry is a cool dude. No Ego.. Dime was the same way. You can tell him and Dime got along great.
Damn yeah I miss Dime. He really was awesome and always had time for the fans.
Chris you're right ! Dime and jerry are the same way when it comes to interviews !
I met jerry in Arlington tx though dime. He's a nice guy but little cocky. No rock star as cool as dime!
@@atimatthew6004 Dime was kind of an "eye roller" he could be really nice or he could asshat in seconds. Still of course miss the guy. He was genuine.
Losing dime must of been so hard for him, they were very close friends
Dirt is still one of the most rocking albums ever.
One of the few bands that I liked all their albums

@@bradcarter6286 Zeppelin's ii is really awesome indeed
Love them all but nutshell holds a special place in my heart
and what was Facelift? smh
jerry has always been one of the nicest dudes in the music biz. ran into him many times over the years and he has always been just lovely. laid back, modest, just a cool dude.
I used to clean and tune that 1st G&L ! I can say I am proud to be part of the start of AIC's career. Hubbard here. 8)
Would you happen to know what speakers Jerry used/uses typically?
@@DylanHutto2 greenbacks on top, and 2 vintage 30s on bottom of the cab
Cantrell's huge tone is as iconic as Tony Iommi I would say. Of course Iommi is a big influence on his riffing and phrasing but I think he has enough distinguishable characteristics as well.

Jerry is such a Lebowski.... very chill dude. Dig it
Rod Clark lebowski was the angry old man
He's looking more like Willie Nelson except sober and not high
El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing
Yeah... like... that’s just your opinion man
The big lebowski is a movie , fiction . Jerry Cantrell is real.
Jerry has one of the best guitar tones around in my humble opinion. Thank you for This post. Also it looks like he got another Ernie ball EVH guitar to replace the one that was stolen.
Dan Sotelo that is the original. He got it back right before the tour started.
Tom Brino dude I had no idea! I just saw a video where he mentions that and dedicates Rooster to the guys that found it
Tom Brino hahahaha dude awesome!!!

Tone wise, he´s on my TOP 5! Love his singing too! AIC is one of the best bands ever, and Jerry is one of the reasons.
One of the absolute best dudes, songwriters and players around. Jerry’s the man.
The tone on the new album is OUTSTANDING !!!!
◇◇◇Agreed!◇◇◇
John Mueller... Jerry is consistently OUTSTANDING. A real solid player throughout his history of music.
Props to this interviewer for knowing his stuff. This was one of the best gear related interviews I've ever seen.
That guy has the real sound . Sure there are shredders that can play fast shit but Jerry plays one note better than most guitarist playing 20 notes a second . Jerry can shred too but he is more into making a solo work than show off speed . This guy has excellent style . I hope the bears don't chase him anymore.
His notes have feel
That's why I love Jerry and Slash's guitar work so much. They are all about evoking deep emotion with their notes
Least pretentious guitar comment
The lead tone on Whale & Wasp is incredible. It's so mournful and hopeful, and with all that sustain. That's what guitar playing is imo, it's the phrase and the tone together which is really saying something.
Funny how Jerry makes jokes and laugh all by himself.
Thanks Sweetwater, always wanted it to see his rig!
how about those guitars, huh?
Thanks for what? 😂
Jerry Cantrell.....what can I say about this man? He's got it all without the "iconic rock star" attitude. Hes down to earth, easy going, very personable, he's got the best laugh ans my I say he has the voice of an angel!!!!! I adore this man!
Agree 100%
I love Jerry's laugh...its so Maniacal and evil genius like lol. Hes such a cool dude. Would love to chill with him and just talk music
Never really been into the music but Jerry is the coolest guy. It's so good when the 'star' does the rig rundown

Jerry's just a good dude, and a great songwriter, guitar player, etc.

Jerry has one of the best tones... hands down. Such a chill dude.
Jerry is awesome would really like to meet him one day, can't wait for the new album im sure its going to be killer.
I adore Jerry Cantrell as a guitar player. One of the best out there.

Nice! 😂
*Badum tssss!*
except the actual phrase is jury rigged, for real
You would make a great dad with that pun

Jerry is just a cool dude...straight basic...love it...great dude
I love how happy Jerry seems nowadays compared to the first few years after AIC reformed, he seems like he’s really hit his stride again
I would love to just sit w jerry and talk music,he's so chilled and humble
Jerry Cantrell going doing one of my favorite Guitar Heros of all times... his killer ass guitar riffs going down in rock music history
Man, Jerry just seems like a humble and cool dude.
Jerry's a laid back guy. I remember him back in high school hanging around the keg parties and what-not. There were a lot of good players in the South Tacoma/Spanaway area. Tons of cool garage bands.
I think he was in tramp alley/bathtub gin for a while, during his hair metal days.
Remember them idiots?
FINALLY
Now let's see more of those guitars
During his solo days on The Boggy Depot album, he ventured to Fayetteville AR, around 98, and I got to meet him. Sadly, he wasn't very friendly, because some jerk during that small concert tossed ciggs on the stage, hitting the drummer. He's much more relaxed here, knew he was a super dude. Signed my Sap album.
My top five: Brian May, David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen, Jerry Cantrell and Tony Iommi.
Hey Jerry I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I'm talking with friends of mine and we were thinking that it would be awesome for you to have a radio station. You are 1 of the best and know all about the other grunge bands there too. I'm just putting that out there I'm sure people are trying to get you to do stuff all the time

Cantrell! The Prophet of 90s Guitar
Great thorough interview.... not getting too much into the nitty gritty of gear but the bigger picture behind a "sound" or "approach". Cheers!
Jerry is such a cool guy. and he’s got the best laugh ❤️
Lol the white pick he’s talking about he used with the wings on them I caught one from him in 2014 at thunder valley casino. Good times
seems like a really chill dude
Cannot love that JC wah pedal any more, so dang good
Huge AIC fan from way back, love Jerry.
Living Legend.
You laugh about the "designated driver" thing, but Jerry is still alive...
Thank you.
Yes a guitar legend Lord of the Riffs ❤️🎶🎸
That would be Iommi
Love Jerry...
His tone... Is sick..
I have been waiting for this one! Great post!
Another thing that can NEVER be overstated.... is Jerry Cantrell’s influences on music!!!!! FACT
I Love Jerry's tone
Great questions~!! Cool interview. Thank you/
Dude! Take them guitars out of that fly case! Show us that candy! Jerry is indeed a very cool guy.
5:50 - Jerry gives his Dad a subtle 'nod'- now I have as many Les Pauls as I feckin WANT! "-)
Jerry the GOAT
The more i learn about him the more i feel like id like to know him.
So cool!! Jerry is the tone master! How could they NOT talk about the yellow EVH that’s hanging right there?! That’s the one that got stolen and resurfaced 18 years later!
I have a theory Jerry is actually James Cameron’s Rock n roll alter ego.
This has potential
..one of the most colorful guitar players out there....very nice guy ... VERY clever songwriter / vocals.....it's like the Devil's Everly Brother's...
Rig Tour? Got some guitars here, not going to pull those out. Also got this rack of effect and switchers etc, not going look at those either. Awesome Thanks!
Michael Shane Jerry uses a talk box on Man in the Box...holy crap who knew? 😂
Rockart9 😉
Agree. Good interview but not a rig tour
😂
We need an Acoustic guitar video Jerry!!
Jerry's a guitar GOD!!
Theres old pictures of Jerry playing a Randall RG100ES. Incredible player.
He was using a Firebird when Alice was touring with Korn about 2 years ago. The story behind the drop D tuning was actually Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil, according to another video.
that's what i remember hearing too
He understood it too. Jerry is a freaking cool ass dude😂
That was cool. Thanks Jerry.
Looks like Jerry's got his whole rig in the dressing rm! LOL!
Jerry’s awesome
I am so stoked for the new Alice In Chains record.
Jerry and AIC have always had the best sound. Or at least the sound I enjoyed the most of all rock guitars. It's gritty grunge but there is definitely a bit of country influence there. Sounds so western and authentic. It's my favorite.
I like the sound of Jerry's solo song off degradation trip called Locked on, its badass
Great interview.
