Kirk has to be one the most selfless, genuine and easy going people in music. this doc was about him as a icon, and he talked like it was about all of his friends and family. Not once did he seem like he was bosting or trying to be the rock god. And he did write some of metals most iconic guitar parts that will be remembered for years to come
I’d say that’s a big reason why he’s lasted so long in the band. If he was egotistical, he’d have clashed badly with Lars and James and probably left a long time ago. He’s suppressed his ego to further the band. Fantastic band mate to have.
Fact. Lars and James have these huge combative personalities and that creative tension probably was important to their success but they really needed someone like Kirk whose personality is a stabilizing influence on the group.. Mustaine could have never lasted
It was the opposite for me. I was playing and learning just fine. Then I saw him play. Made me put the damn thing down and quit. I’d never be that good. Jk lol. He’s fantastic.

@@gibsonguitar I agree with Frederick suggestion, PLEASE consider the idea of making full historical documentary of Metallica , that will be some ground breaking thing
I'm sure he's got some form of survivor's guilt, due to him and Cliff having switched bunks on the night Cliff died. Had that not happened, Kirk likely would be have died in the accident, and Cliff would have survived it.
Speaking of Cliff, is it just me or does Lars never seem to express any feelings about Cliff? James and Kirk are usually the only ones to ever mention Cliff. Plus, Lars once referred to Cliff as a "sacrificial lamb" in SKOM. 🤔🤷♂️
Kirk told the history without any ego which was very refreshing. He didn't go on first hour talking about him, he talked about the journey as a musician as a band with other musicians pretty much. He's a rare gem in the industry.
To the person in charge of producing this videos at Gibson RUclips, please keep this format of long form interview that leaves out the interviewer. It's so nice to have the illusion of just being in a room with the guest rockstar hearing them share stories so freely. I really enjoyed this video.

Get him into Joe Satriani and Dream Theater, Steve Vai, Andy Timmons, etc etc if you want him to excel technique wise tho :D
Many of us Thrashers and Punkers are gonna hit 60. While the new generation goes backwards to pussy ass Pop and lame rap. Thrash, Hip Hop, and Rock Metal has lost its true art and fan base in 2022. But we need to support the good stuff of all genres and not the crap put out there. .
So fascinating interview. Kirk is so humble and down to hearth. His telling is like reading a book of memories. What struck me the most is how intense he was explaining the first gig with 30 people as it was yesterday. Most of the Rock stars would not even go there anymore. They could not even remember it. Egos you know...But not Kirk. The second was the raising of guitar maters as he pointed out, Malmsteen, Lynch, Van halen, and they pulled up justice for all to show they can be advanced technically. Still Kirk saying, "after 40 years of playing I should be better than that"....What is not to like in this man? :-)
Kirk has a pretty good memory and it’s a sure asset to have. It had to of been a treasured memory of his to remember his second gig as part of MetallicA it’s got to be a sacred achievement his done in his life journey. Kirk has a knack for being a musician and isn’t afraid of telling truths about what occurred. Good on this fantastic lead guitarist and may he have great physical health and mental clarity 😎🤘
Agreed, Kirk is such a likable guy and I'm far from the biggest Metallica fan ever...he just tells so stories well I could listen all day. I love to read but there's something special about oral history.
Came in expecting a long Gibson ad with one of my favorite guitarists. Instead got an incredible documentary about the early years of Kirk’s life and the formative years of Metallica. This was great!
Thank you Gibson for putting this up, it's so great someone letting the mic run with Kirk and not interrupting him with interviewer crap. Great storytelling Kirk, amazing to listen to.

I'm amazed he takes the thing out on tour. Even though Metallica's security will no doubt be extremely tight, I still wouldn't risk it. The value and history of the guitar is just too much to take that chance
Kirk is like a cool guitarist that is genuinely humble. Think he never once trying to show how good he is. In fact, in this interview, he literally admitted his area of weakness throughout his career. How many celebrity can do that? 👍
Because he is not that good in terms of technique, writing wise hes got excellent lick composition, but in comparison to MANY guitarists he is at best above average. He's good, sometimes great, but rarely astounding.

I love Kirk Hammett, not every comment needs to validate the very human desire to see everyone praised, I mean if you wen't through this whole comment section you could find a lot worse than what I said i'm sure... it's a part of Kirk's reputation as a legend that he isn't the absolute BEST guitarist on the planet and uses wah wah to cover up for his lack of speed and accuracy. Why he never, or doesn't develop that through practice is beyond me, but I merely want the best for him, I mean it. he's the reason I started playing guitar in the first place. Spent most of high school and college learning metallica songs note by note and it was an excellent band to start with as a guitarist cus you could learn to do some pretty impressive sounding shit pretty fast if you practiced 6+ hours a day like I did. Within a few years I was playing Eruption by Van Halen at the school talent show... god 18 years ago lol I miss those days. From Kirk I discovered my 2nd love, Joe Satriani, and from him a variety of insanely complex and talented musicians of many many genres. I was merely making valid consideration to how I view and admire his legacy. Believe me, my first guitar was a ESP/LTD kirk hammett model (goddamn that floyd rose bridge on the cheap one tho lol) I grew up loving metallica, all of it's members, even Lars (who for the record was RIGHT about napster). I'm sry i ticked your buttons buddy. For the record I think Kirk is one of the best guitar lick writers in rock and roll/heavy metal in general. On almost every album - that's why most people felt saint anger was so dissapointing. I merely wished to express my admiration through fair and honest critique. I could praise his work all day but where would I start? O think his solo work on Death Magnetic for example is fucking brilliant (the day that never comes, suicide and redemption, unforgiven 3) Hell Unforgiven 1 has one the best classic clean to heavy building type of solo's EVER IMO. Similar to the solo in One. It's brilliant. I just wish he had more "tools" at his disposal like some of the more disciplined guitar players in metal. It would help with the evoluiton of the styles of the various albums. IMO Death MAgnetic similar to And Justice For All is a great are great examples of Metallica's musical range, of which kirk is undeniably linked. And speaking of "tools" using some more effects and not relying on the whammy as much would be REFRESHING. Sry I came off as negative - I forget people actually take great offense to musical opinions hehe, because I just don't. If someone doesn't like parts of a band or music that I like, they are entitled to post that argument anywhere across the internet. :3 That good? I could go on... ? S&M and S&M2 are 2 of the greatest live concerts videos/albums EVER. Like in the history of music. Like, very few symphony backed bands sound as good as they do. Happy New Year friend. :)
@Rapportus5 And a prosperous 2021 to you and yours brother🤘🏾 I'm from a settlement in southern Africa, where most people have never even heard of metal. So I won't lie to you, I'm pretty new to it if I'm being honest. I'm 18 now, and I've been playing guitar since long time (albeit mostly African music). I moved to urban area last year for school, and it was there I heard Fade to Black a few months back... and with it... metal for the first time. And I was just in shock, never heard music that sent chills through body, and nothing could've prepared me for that epic fade to black outro solo. And so it began, my Metallica journey. Unforgiven (all three), The day that never comes, nothing else matters and to live is to die are currently my favorites. Being new to this style of guitar playing, I honestly just fell in love with the style, and with Kirk as a person as well. And naturally, want to one day be as good as him (hopefully better? Maybe?). I'm sorry bud I got a little triggered, it's not like I'm an expert on this style of playing so I'm not one to talk. I guess I'm suffering from the noob syndrome where everything sounds perfect to me and I haven't yet explored their catalogue. So that's on me, apologies 🤝🏾
His a humble man and a humble person knows they sure ain’t perfect. Who the fuxk is perfect I wanna ask. I bet Kirk Hammett would say I ain’t fuxken perfect man. I haven’t got a definitive answer to that question there.
Yeah. Between this & his part in SKOM I want to believe he's the biggest reason they try to work things out. His personality gives them reason to still want to be a band and be friends. Very cool, sage dude.
You can tell how introverted he is. You can also hear his social anxiety in his voice. I think this is why i relate to him so well. He's so humble and nice.
Same here man, this interview hit different than the other ones in the series. Also, for me it feels like he's just happy to have been a part of it all y'know? Like he had absolutely no ego throughout and constantly undersold a lot of his contributions. Couldn't help but really admire it.
He obviously is struggling. Doing fine. But struggling. It goes to show when it comes to what is pushing you to live, to help you find a reason to be in this shit hole existence, you will find a way. My social skills fall just below a lobotomy candidate...it took me years to even speak on the internet...can't understand a single word I say in person unless I'm really close to you. I start having panic attacks or I lock up. The second I start singing I'm a totally different person. Music makes me feel and express in ways I never could otherwise.
Kirk is modest, but he also has a quiet confidence about him. He's not afraid to acknowledge the impact of the band. It's just an objective fact that they are one of the most important metal bands and will be forever. Not acknowledging that is false modesty and he's better than that.
I've always felt that Kirk had this intelligence, sensitivity, thoughtfulness, and insight- he just needs the right space for it to open up and express. It's so great to see him get to do this in this video. I love what he says towards the end about committing to guitar and making it a lifestyle.
Whenever the band members recall memories, my favourite to listen to is Kirk. He explains things like he paints a vivid picture. Lars's can recall exact dates, exact stadium, exact time, what the weather was like. The way Kirk speaks is like listening to someone read a novel. This vid really makes me look at him in a different way. Not only as the lead player, but as a true pioneer. He was there through it all, from before the sound existed to the 50 crowds, to the 80,000 stadium tours. Just a guy that enjoys playing and never gave up on his craft.
When u think of rockstars as arrogant and selfish people, because that fits their style... and then here is Kirk a living legend being so humble as he talks, he always says "we" never "me" or "I" and he always says his name last in listings where he refers afew other people, and also you can feel how much he loves all this. It's feels good to watch and listen him, I could probably enjoy that forever, just listen him telling stories.
Agreed Tamas! Humility comes before honor, and diligence produces excellence. It’s inspiring to know he still loves practicing often; May a new crop of musicians follow his example!
I can’t get over how great of a story teller Kirk is, after every interview I watch I’m always left happy after it, watching my biggest inspiration talk for 1 hour and do it perfectly is great
@Bret Zagar (zay-ger) No doubt Metallica as whole will always be talked about. When people bring up legendary guitarist no one ever mentions Kirk. this footage is a treasure, it's gold! Long life to Kirk!!! Awesome musician!!
This is the most vulnerable, sweet, joyful Kirk I've yet been priviledged to see. He is totally himself here ... one of the best interviews I've EVER seen ... candid and just true. I mean of ALL interviews of anyone I've ever seen ... this is pure delight and real. And Kirk's innocence is a gift ... love this.
In fact ... the more I learn about Kirk ... the more I love him like I love James and Lars. And it also refreshes how I hear his music and where it is coming from ... completely resets the whole thing for me. I'd love to see James and Lars on this Icons thing ... Lars doesn't get to really be vulnerable a lot because it so happened that he became the figurehead and spokesperson of the band ... I'd love to hear him talk about growing up and how emotionally it's been to be in his dream of being in a metal band.
Kirk is a legend! Those first four Metallica albums saved my life back in 80's. As kid in the 80's I was a complete outsider I found complete solace in their music. My respect for them is immense.
Kirk gets a lot of flack, and his playing has at times been less than stellar, but the guy has written some iconic and brilliant pieces of music. He and Hetfield are why I play guitar, and they changed my life. I wouldn't be who I am or where I am if it wasn't for Kirk Hammett. I met him back in 2004 and he was incredibly friendly and engaging. A truly nice dude. And the leads on AJFA are still some of my favorite guitar solos ever. I enjoyed the hell out of this interview.
Leads are comped all the time. It’s how I write/compose mine. It’s the same with the main song structure. Hetfield bangs out riffs and Lars goes in and takes the best parts and arranges them into a song. Common practice.
this guy is such a humble man, very inspiring. And when he talked about Cliff with almost tears in his eyes it was very moving. We all miss Cliff, imagine how the people who knew him so well must feel. Great stuff, I also love the way GibsonTV erases the questions and just leaves the parts in which the 'icon' is speaking
I don’t remember where I saw it, however, it was pretty recent. There were some recent pictures of the band with Cliffs Dad, backstage. It was really beautiful.
Kirk is such a nice guy. At 27:00, he tells a story about a bunch of stuff getting stolen and immediately says “but I was so thankful … “. Not a negative, angry word about it.
Wow..this man can tell a story...This "interview" should be archived in this vault where all significant stuff of human kind is stored. Like this seed bank in norway...?
Really feel for kirk and all of the guys in the band. 36 years since cliff died and they cant get away from talking about the death of their friend every time they do an interview. that's gotta be rough. kirk is one of my guitar heroes and im glad he is still out there grinding, what a legend. Kirk has to be one the most selfless, genuine and easy going people in music. this doc was about him as a icon, and he talked like it was about all of his friends and family. Not once did he seem like he was bosting or trying to be the rock god. And he did write some of metals most iconic guitar parts that will be remembered for years to come
So well pointed! Personally, that's why I respect him even more.
Ahh i love kirk
Kirk literally wrote the Enter Sandman riff and the DIE riff in Creeping Death. Talk about remembered....
I’d say that’s a big reason why he’s lasted so long in the band. If he was egotistical, he’d have clashed badly with Lars and James and probably left a long time ago. He’s suppressed his ego to further the band. Fantastic band mate to have.
@@CrazyLeyther well said man, I agree
It's really refreshing to hear the way Kirk articulates his stories. His genuine positive attitude is the glue that keeps Metallica together.
Fact. Lars and James have these huge combative personalities and that creative tension probably was important to their success but they really needed someone like Kirk whose personality is a stabilizing influence on the group.. Mustaine could have never lasted

A monumental loss for sure. Changed the course of music. That’s how big cliff was! Both his presence and his absence changed music!

@Rapportus5 And a prosperous 2021 to you and yours brother🤘🏾
I'm from a settlement in southern Africa, where most people have never even heard of metal.
You can 100% tell why James, Lars, and Cliff wanted Kirk in the band. Kirk is a very real human being.
Yeah. Between this & his part in SKOM I want to believe he's the biggest reason they try to work things out. His personality gives them reason to still want to be a band and be friends. Very cool, sage dude.
He speaks with all the exuberance and energy of a kid. Bless 'em.

Same here man, this interview hit different than the other ones in the series.
Also, for me it feels like he's just happy to have been a part of it all y'know? Like he had absolutely no ego throughout and constantly undersold a lot of his contributions.
Couldn't help but really admire it.
Do you know what introverted means?? Cmon man not a single introvert does shit that he does
He obviously is struggling.
Its not just his playing, its his attitude n personality that makes him a legend
Kirk is modest, but he also has a quiet confidence about him. He's not afraid to acknowledge the impact of the band. It's just an objective fact that they are one of the most important metal bands and will be forever. Not acknowledging that is false modesty and he's better than that.
I love this man. No matter what people say or think about him, he truly is an icon with some of the most singable solos you will ever hear.
I can’t get over how great of a story teller Kirk is, after every interview I watch I’m always left happy after it, watching my biggest inspiration talk for 1 hour and do it perfectly is great
I think he's underrated as a great guitarist. Some of the most beautiful solos ever made are from this man.

Kirk has always been my favorite of metallica. He's so humble and down to earth.

How can you not make a wah joke when literally the first thing he says is 'wah'! (0:40...)
@@andthebeatgoeson69 RIP
Who cares? I love wah.
Kirk is the reason I started playing guitar though
Love this dude, unbelievably humble, grateful, considerate, and he shreds. One of my favorite guitarists by far
Some say Kirk isn't officially in the band to this day
$200 million not being officially in the band sounds pretty nice
I mean, technically he isn't?
He just keeps on showing up since 1982.
Well he’s doing fucking great or done great anyway lol
Not in 1.0
Every time I see Kirk talking about music and other stuffs I always think: this guy is very nice.
If concerts come back I’m going straight to a Metallica concert.
See you there!!!
I'm going with you buddy!
It’s a must do at least once in life. They are amazing.
damn right bro!
Just make sure get your sweet n sour sniffles vaxx.
He is a revelation. Humble and honest not a fake bone in this guy. I love him even more now. Thanks, Gibson for this treat.
Absolute gem of an interview. I particularly enjoyed the story where Kirk shouts "Sweet Savage" during the Metallica gig and Dave retorts "fuck off".
His explanation of why he loves the wha pedal was beautiful.
Dam straight
Too bad he doesn't share the same passion for playing without it. Too bad.
@@kiillabytez Meh, that was their first five albums. If you think about it, aside from Load and Death Magnetic (those are the only wah obsessed solos for entire albums of theirs) are the only time he used wah tastefully. That's still only 2 albums where it was overtly prominent. St. Anger and Reload basically didn't have solos lmao....
@@kiillabytez It's his thing. Cope. Plus like Murk said he doesn't use it all the time. Some of his best solos don't have wah anywhere on them. It's just a sheepheaded thing to parrot durr hurr Kirk overuse wha because it's a fucking lazy way to trash someone more successful than you.
@@ZiddersRooFurry Funny thing is, I don't care. I also don't care that you are dirt poor, neither. Did I trigger you? Are you going to stand up for your heartthrob now? That's so adorable. It's okay, you'll toughen up after you hit puberty.
Most famous metal guitar player on the planet, stayed true, still very much loves what he’s been doing, does not pretend, recognizes his limitations.
Really learnt to play thanks to his music. Met him twice, saw them many times. been playing 30 years now and still enjoying it so much. He was the gate opener for me. I wish I could meet him once more to show my gratitude
You’re my hero Kirk Hammett !
This series of interviews/bios is fabulous. Today I've watched Rex Brown of Pantera and now Kirk Hammett of Metallica. Both of these are brilliant. They just let the guys talk, and the audience is captivated. Thanks for providing these wonderful slices of history.
The one with Jerry Cantrell is pretty good too.
Legend. He is so self-effacing and, in a way, such a pure artist. As humble as he is intense. You can tell he walks it and breathes it. The real McCoy. The people who rag on him only do so to take him down to their level. Pro tip: level up, beetches.
Whoever is talking crap about KH and Metallica obviously doesn't respect the history and the hard work they've put in.
Absolute legend, great guitarist.
For people who say he hadn't been that good haven't given death magnetic a chance, he was great on it. They aren't real fans.
a lot of ppl like to make fun of him, especially the music snobs that think if you don’t play technical 100% of the time you’re not good, but he’s without a doubt one of the great metal guitar players of all time, he can shred his ass off, and he’s definitely an inspiration to me and to millions of ppl just like me, he also seems like a great guy.
Kirk “The Ripper” Wahmmett🔥🔥🔥
I’ve always enjoyed Kirk’s perspective in The Metallica story. He’s got a lot of honesty. I respect him a lot for what he said about the Wah pedal bit. I wish this video was longer lmao.
this footage is a treasure, it's gold!
You said everything I wanted to say. Awsome
You can really tell how passionate he is about what he does by how he stutters and stumbles over his words. Really awesome video love Kirk
He's always had a stutter
@@Spongebob-lf5dn thanks for the buzzkill, spongebob.
@@Spongebob-lf5dn see I noticed in this interview he had a stutter. I never knew he stuttered in real life. Thanks for the info bro.
Or maybe it's just his stutter bro
Kirk is a legend! Those first four Metallica albums saved my life back in 80's. As kid in the 80's I was a complete outsider I found complete solace in their music. My respect for them is immense.
it just makes me so happy to listen to him uninterrupted i could listen to him tell his storeys for hours
Hes a legend of metal and there's no taking that away
Ask Gary Holt who taught him early on, yes Kirk
@@richfrommitch What solos is legendary from gary?
Leads are comped all the time. It’s how I write/compose mine. It’s the same with the main song structure. Hetfield bangs out riffs and Lars goes in and takes the best parts and arranges them into a song. Common practice.
Calm down.
this guy is such a humble man, very inspiring.
Kirk should get more credit for being a pioneer of the Bay Area thrash scene.
I’m pretty sure he does. I’ve always held him in high esteem as a result.
Bloody oath!!!
What a fantastic interview with one of the greatest guitarists ever!!
A lot of feels listening to him talk about still grieving over cliff.
What a fantastic interview. His description of how the Bay Area thrash scene came to be was excellent.
Now the Bay Area is a trash scene.
Hearing him talk about Cliff made me very sad, you could really feel the sorrow in his voice
No one is perfect but this guy is a fuckin Legend in Metal. Kirk always brings us back to the foundation of metal, what a dude.
Really feel for kirk and all of the guys in the band. 36 years since cliff died and they cant get away from talking about the death of their friend every time they do an interview. that's gotta be rough. kirk is one of my guitar heroes and im glad he is still out there grinding, what a legend. RIP Mr. burton, your music will always live on.
In a way, and only slightly, kind of like Dave Mustaine can’t interview and not talk about getting booted from Metallica.
@@soculese Haha
Cliff was probably one of the best guitarists to walk the earth.
@@hounddog3476 agree he was a monster on the bass
love this interview. I come back to it periodically and listen while I practice.
kirk is a great story teller. I thought i was going to lose interest after a few minutes, but i stayed for the whole thing. Just a good guy with a good heart with a love for an instrument.
This is truly one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. I wish he spoke more all the time
"They decided to start with the easiest song, which was 'Seek and Destroy.'"
(Toss my guitar over the alley wall.)
Grab it and seek and destroy!
Really easy song
You can do it! No pressure! Some songs I find hard to play, I look em up on youtube and slow them down to 0,75 speed.
I thought it was Jump In The Fire
I guessed it one second before he said it.
