"The dog 🐕 record" Tripod, was to me a ominous warning of a 4 Man band that was losing a member. Hence the 3 legs. Rest in peace 🕊️ to the Beautiful soul, Layne Staley.
As someone born in 1970 and lived through this time, you did a good job covering the AIC part of rock-n-roll history...
Btw, nobody should give Metallica a pass for the things they said about Layne!
I agree 💯%. James Hetfield of course later in his life checked into rehab for addiction to alcohol.....🤔 Paying a little karmic debt there James?
I 💯 agree‼️✌️
@@suryadas6987 I read somewhere that Metallica fans called them "Alcoholica" for that very reason. 🙄 So James definitely had NO room to talk.
@@jekku4688 😎👍 For sure he didn't!
I often wonder how that relationship was patched up. Jerry is obviously friends with them now, and Metallica actually attended AIC’s MTV Unplugged set. Metallica def was extremely hurtful and demeaning (publicly) about Layne’s addiction. I have difficulty reconciling their actions. My heart hurt for Layne and the rest of AIC.
You stuff really deserves a lot more views
Appreciate that man, thank you!
I just found this channel. So happy somebody is not talking about how Layne passed. We No. Talk about his amazing voice. Beautiful good looks. How funny he was stuff like that.💗 thanks
Facelift was such a breath of fresh air. I would play it and sing along while my toddler daughters would dance around. I was raised on metal and punk. I did not like the "hair metal" bands. AIC, STP and Soundgarden with a dash of Ministry became the music for that era of my life. What a great time to be a young music fan. I never did see them live. I was never in the right place at the right time. Thanks for the deep dive on these fabulous albums.
Layne is Layne and nobody can replace him. Miss him so much ❤
Just finished my AIC vinyl collection from Facelift-Unplugged!
I agree William deserves credit for Alice in Chains record sells after Layne, but he will never hold a chance in hell of being on the same level as Layne Staley vocally
Nobody will man, it’s no point in even comparing, just appreciate the fact that William had the balls to fill those shoes, it’s because of him that Jerry,Mike,Shaun are still together.
I am a huge AIC fan but I'm not feeling it without Layne. Jerry should have renamed the band.
@@suryadas6987 I was like that for a long time, but then I realized that Sean and Jerry deserve to continue with AIC if they want, and Inez is basically an original member(no discredit to starr) but it’s 2021 Inez joined in 93-94. Duvall is a respectable replacement without trying to copy. Like they did with the bass players. Also their new albums are all good except for the Dinasour one
@@suryadas6987 also this means there is still a chance to see AIC live !
@@BCMoney1995 Well, music taste is subjective and I'm just stating my personal feelings. Jerry has every right to keep the AIC name but for me that's not AIC. I just can't into the new stuff despite giving it a try. They're a great band but not for me. I'll take a hard pass.
Well researched documentary. Subscribed. A little bit fast paced but very thorough. Great job. 👏👍
Great video man,happy 21!!!
Great videos and great content!!!
Only got to see them once as I'm in Australia. 93 I think. Was the end of the Dirt tour. They had that big netting across the whole stage, Layne made great use of. Oh what a night! Managed to score me signatures from all of them on my Dirt CD insert. ✌️
Really enjoyed this. Thanks :)
I have all the Staley era albums and Eps, and live albums on CD. As for vinyl i own every album and ep except Face Lift. The heavy lyrics and hot live sound of the records makes for an immersive experience.
Awesome documentary!
It's been said that Layne was ahead of his time, but who knew he was an actual time-traveler!!! 4:45 Just don't whip out your iPhone 12 while visiting 1990!😮
Love the Alice In Chains content
Except for the Duvall crap
@@ssherrierable Give him a break. He's not supposed to be Layne. He brings something different. Musically he brings things Layne couldn't do. Not vocally, musically. He can play all of Jerry's lines. So Jerry doesn't have to pick and choose or use loops or tracks as much live. He's also sober.
@@ssherrierable sorry your too closed minded to understand AICs brilliance with WD.
Too bad they didnt select you to front the band when you tried out.
Not everyone can live up to LS.
Layne Staley doesn't give a different account for We Die Young he just adds his own perspective of what was going on at the time and how it likely contributed to the song.
I think William Duvall doing great job to, but Layne one of my heroes..😪😪😪🤧
Got me wrong (which they did play) is off SAP and not Facelift
Dam that river had some of my favorite guitar playing ever
Hello, Dani. I just came to say that i really dig your work. You have been doing these amazing videos, so much information which were dificult for most of us to have. Keep on with the good work. Salutes from, Brazil - Altamira-Pará (Middle of the Amazon forest) Take care G'd bless you!

@@IndicacannaJones Well nice to Meet you,Yep Those were Great Times 🤘🖤👍
New line up? You mean the new singer? Duvall ain't a line up. He's horrible fyi...
Great aic videos
I love that story of how AIC threw hair metal 'out the room' and locked the door behind them! PROPS to MTV execs for taking the high road, and a risk, and trying something new! (especially when MTV was known for being a-holes about a great many things). Without that one change, the world may never have known about the greatness of AIC the way they became known. Have to admit MTV put all sorts of artists on the map - especially when it came to grunge - where they might not normally have seen the light of day.
Naw with or without MTV Alice in Chains would of been on the map as there is no stopping great talent that's for sure!
Dirt can't be topped but if you play with Jerry your always going to be great
Ima meet Layne after I give up the ghost!!!... im looking forward to it!!!
Yup love all the AIC videos..
Omg AIC is brilliant forever!
I just found your channel & I am impressed. I WILL MISS LAYNE FOREVER! I love grunge/ alternative/hard rock...
I think you're a little mixed up with the information pertaining to "Got Me Wrong", around the 42:40 minute mark. I'm not trying to take anything away from your awesome work, I just noticed you credited that track as being on "Facelift", not "SAP". No matter. I enjoyed the video, as always. Keep up the great work!
William
Will never shine Laynes shoes. Maybe he deserves credit for the work he’s done after but comparing him to Layne is night and day.
Man, killer video as always. You should really try to get with Randy Staub and/or Nick Rasculinecz. They did Black Gives Way To Blue and The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. Nick engineered it and Randy mixed it. Musically, I will always love the Layne era more. But, the newer albums sound absolutely huge sonically.
That’s interesting, since I don’t like
the way they sound at all. I love how
“Dirt” sounds. Maybe it was intentional
to have a completely different sounding
production, so people wouldn’t compare
so much, don’t know…✌️
@@kiekko673 I hear you! I will say that the guitar tone on Dirt is totally iconic. Dave Jerden absolutely crushed it. Especially considering this was back in 1992!
@@tylerbrittan593
And the DRUMS man! On Dirt you can hear
them very clearly (good separation), but later
albums they just sound almost like a one big
mess under the guitar walls, not my kinda producer…
@@kiekko673 The drums were definitely huge. I always wondered if Jerden used a sample for the bulk of the snare sound. Either way, the drum room sound has always impressed me. Sounds huge!
@@tylerbrittan593
Yeah, I think it was mostly the room,
he knew exactly what to do, and how
to capture it. One of the best produced
rock albums ever in my books. ✌️
holy shit i've been listening to AIC since 1990/1991 had no clue we die young was about kids/gang violence. wild
🎵 Hey....im glad i watched this again....yeah 🎵
13:00 damn that reminds me of the time Jack said Megadeths a pop band 😅🤣
Great Content, well done.
Layne was an amazing talent.
His tragic loss is the disappointment as his Heroin addiction took his life.
Kurt Cobain , Janis Joplin and countless other artist have fallen prey to this horrible drug.
Thankfully we all have Laynes music.
I’m impressed with William Duval as he’s made it possible for Alice N Chains to press on.
Jerry Cantrell is awesome as well as drummer Shaun Kenny.
Mike Inez is an excellent bass player.
This lineup work well together.
AIC after Layne pales in comparison Staley is the voice of AIC.
Please keep going and do the rest of albums and the new era . Please
New era sucks ballz. Alice was Layne band before Jerry and Sean so Jerry has no right to call Williams version of the band Alice in chains... its fucked up and Duvall don't have the voice man. Sorry.
Why AIC doesn't have a grammy or a 🌟
That wasnt before and it will be not again kind of bleeding soul on stage like immortal Layne Staley!!!! One of the best bands of all time and music which change my life forever
lol, I seen a different interview, at that time Layne and Jerry explained they weere driving down the street when they came up to the corner and there was a bunch of kids from the ages of around 11 to 14, exchanging drugs as well as doing the drugs. At this point they came up with an idea for a song "We Die Young" no joke just search it
🤘😎🤘
Idk I think 60s and especially the 70s rock/prog rock are awsome era's
Thank you so much for all of your work on AIC. Can you do one just on Layne? David De Sola's book was good but I think it left alot out especially about Demri Lara Parrott as one of his sources was her mum and it seemed a bit biased. Cheers
*a lot
So mike could get kicked out for his addiction but they didnt try that with layne. Basically mike was replaceable to them, some friends.
2 things Layne and Mike were tight right until the end. No matter how high Layne was he killed on stage. Not the case with Mike. For sure a difference in being able to do your job and repeatedly bombing shows.
Rumor also has it Mike was into too young girls.
He’s right. Hair metal is a derogatory term. I thought it was great but it got so diluted toward the end that the talent pool was at the bottom. It wasn’t all dumb stupid party rock. There was a lot of intelligent brilliant musicians but like I said, toward the end, the scene was completely diluted looking for the next Guns N Roses
The Layne "era" is the ONLY AIC ERA. PERIOD
9:23 is that Mike Portnoy?
I believe it is.
30:05 there's 12 songs on Dirt, 30:14 there's 13 songs on Dirt
Hey John thanks for pointing that out. Could you subscribe if you already haven’t by the way? A lot more videos coming
Layne is & always will be the ONLY AIC era. PERIOD. As much as I love Jerry, Sean, & Mike, I just cannot bring myself to support, go see, listen to Chains with William. I get it you want to keep rockin, but change the name & get a singer that isn't trying to sound like Layne, which honestly is absolutely impossible. What angers me the most is someone else singing Layne's pain. A cover once in a while with a different band name to show respect & give to AIC fans, I get it. But that's not what they did, are doing, & continuing to do. So so disrespectful on so many levels. I'm just so blessed to have experienced Layne 3x live, including the pit at Lollapalooza 93'. Your father says 48'? Same or not the same, but to me, anything after 98' does not get listened too, except for a few rare exceptions. Damn Layne was sexy in his prime.
I like what you say. I think part of it was maybe the record company probably insisted they use that name. It should have been called something else. I think it would have been nice and truely brotherly to bring Mike Starr back in in some way too, given Layne had died... If that makes sense.
Sometimes I think about how a lot of the really dark and self-loathing lyrics were Jerry's, and how maybe singing things for years, night after night, that aren't your own emotions could idk capture you in a way...
great content, pics moving around fast like that is annoying... ;-)
When Layne died Alice in Chains died.I wish Jerry would have just used a new name or under Jerry Cantrell solo career.Jerry is one of my favorite guitarist ever but disagree with keeping AIC.I know what I think doesn't mean shit but I love the band.
I only like Layne era AIC but I have to disagree. Jerry has always worked so hard for Alice so I think he has the right to keep the name, just like we can choose not to really be into AIC without Layne. I totally get what your saying because the reason I love them is Layne but I just think the rest of the band would be weird with a different name.
The most reasonable and civilized RUclips comment thread ever. I agree with both of you.
Personally I’m glad that Jerry has kept it going.William is a great performer.💯☮️
@@stevesmith8588 ditto
@@tjm8128 I like the fact that Jerry and the band brought in a guy who doesn’t sound or look like Layne. Will has his own voice, and that’s why it works. Not to mention it would’ve been disrespectful to Layne’s memory to bring in a lookalike/soundalike, and just cash in playing old songs. The way the band reinvented themselves, is the perfect way to do something like that, in light of a fucked up situation with Staley’s death. To me, bringing in William allowed AiC to reinvent themselves, as they are a completely different band now.
It's all the same! Beste point of view most people are this way.
Yummy for my 420🖤👾💜seattlerockrgrrrl 👿💗
Very Good doc...by Mr. Daniel....we saw Chains open for Vsn Hagar in 92 at the Spectrum in Phila, Pa they played the whole Facelift record....WOW,!!! ...it was a huge stage of the VH stage was completely utilized by them...i know Edward VH treated them very well , they used VH Amps guitar and bass i found out...Sean Kinney did use his own drums..i tell you WOW!!! AIC Burned that place down...in my Top 5 rock performances ive attended....AIC...goddam drugs destroys so many talented poeple....Drugs are a great lie...one does not need them too enjoy life...FACT!
You're right, but without the drugs the catalog of great music would be unrecognizable.
When Mike plays the Enter Sandman riff during the unplugged set... afterwards you hear a "YEEEWWWWWW!!!!" The infamous Hetfield scream!! LMADO!
that's the nail on the head "...'Tallica was there!" LMADO!
You do consistently great work, but the Jay Jay French interview going on for nearly five minutes in the middle of this, most of which isn't directly about Alice in Chains, kinda makes it drag. Hate to complain, but yeah. Great job, otherwise. Thanks ^__^
Dude that was an awesome little anecdote about how Mtv went "Nah" and basically changed, or even just reflected the change, in the face and body of popular rock music.
That shouldn't be ignored if you're interested in context. But to each their own.
I'm so glad the Seattle bands killed hair metal. I couldn't stand that crap. Don't know how that stuff got so popular. I like a wide variety of music mostly anything with heart & soul to it (except R&B).

Lost me at William...see ya
Please do a William video!
GNR was not hair metal, a lot of people consider them metal, alternative, and blues rock. At the same time Alice wasn’t originally considered grunge, they were originally being promoted as metal.
You lost me when you talked about duval
In my opinion, william shouldnt do songs ,singing laynes parts. Cause those shoes wont fit. Sounds like a jerk way of thinking but Layne was the best.
Nah I agree completely. It’s hard to even admit he’s the lead singer of aic. I haven’t ever even heard him mention anything about Layne.
Tell it to Jerry and Sean.
Maybe you’ll feel better if you cry
@@joeldukes303 what? Why the heck would I feel better if I cry susie? Have to resort to combing thru comments to use that one? If they wanted lenny Kravitz to sing for Alice in chains than they should have got the real Lenny Kravitz not an imitation...
I don't think a lot of William but he like pretty much everyone can out sing kramits asleep and accidently.
I could never listen to any AIC my love layne doesn’t sing on no interest in new singer hoping layne found Demri
I can't take you serious for saying the william Duvall era has been great. Thats not chains man sorry. You destroyed your own credibility with that statement.
