Good job Daniel.
Hey Daniel, is there more stuff about Layne to come?
Thanks man
Hey Vivian, yes lots more on the way
@Daniel Sarkissian that's great news! You did a fantastic job in your interview. This is another one that helps us understand Layne a bit more. You asked perfect questions. Looking forward to more!
Toby was great in this interview he was not going to put Layne down & expose too much. Very respectful & lovely ..Layne trusted him Toby understood how private Layne was 💕
I like how Toby kept this interview respectful of Layne’s memory. Layne had some really great friends around him. I hope Layne knew how these people felt about him. ❤
He had to know he was loved. Look at the reception he received walking onstage for the Unplugged show.
Toby seems like a really down to earth guy
I also felt that respect coming from Toby, this was really cool to watch
Toby's a good guy
Same, you could tell Toby really cares about Layne as a friend
This was incredible. Thank you for doing this interview. In 2023 we simply can't get enough of Layne Staley and Alice in Chains.
You're welcome Chadwick, cheers
l love Layne's voice... SO much! they are still my #1 all-time favorite band.
Toby being a great friend to Layne even still today.
Ya I really enjoyed that part of this you can tell he cares about him
88 days clean today and going strong. thank you again for these videos Daniel.
You're welcome Brad & keep strong!
Keep it up man. I got 3 year tomorrow & thank God & pray for those still struggling daily.
Keep going Brad!
Congratulations Brad! Keep it up, man! I hope I'll join you soon on the journey of recovery and being sober... Because for now heroin still holds me tied up... 5 years now and I'm only 22 years old girl from Poland. I plan to go to detox and rehab soon, but first I have to earn a lot of money for that :/ wish me luck! 🤞🍀🤞
Congrats Brad keep it up
Couldn't agree more. They were the Lennon and McCartney of the 90's. Great interview.
Thanks Yeti, and yup they were definitely a great combo
I greatly appreciate the insight Toby provided regarding Layne.
Daniel has the most coverage regarding Layne. Other than him there’s really none at all. And so much thanks to him.
So true. Some of Daniel’s material/info/sources comes from the book ‘Alice in Chains: The Untold Story’ by David de Sola. It’s a great insight into some of the people who were loved ones, friends with, worked with or were behind the scenes with the band.
@@amifterbifty yes. I’ve read everything. All books available regarding Layne. I feel like Mark Lanegan’s was the best.
@@JoeMarker cool thanks for letting me know.
Thanks a lot Joe, really appreciate that
I wish he could find more!!!! This is great.
So glad to see how appreciated Laynes huge amount of work is nowadays. I remember the late 90s- early 2000s and all the media talked about was the drugs. Just like how dirty Rolling Stone did Layne, which I believe was his last interview ("The needle & the damage done" cover instead of the whole AIC band cover). Layne still has the best voice I have ever heard out of a White man, he's up there with soul singers like Sam Cooke & Little Stevie Wonder with them vocals.
Layne is awesome, underrated in my opinion
What do you think are some of the songs which best showcase his vocals?
Perfectly said. Layne's voice had soul and depth. A completely unique voice💗 I consider him the best singer in rock history
@@TheStepmonkey me too this guy was incredible
Rolling Stone wrote shameful and diserespectful things in that interview about Layne. They should have apologized.
One of the best Alice in Chains Interviews I’ve ever seen!
Thanks Jake
When I heard Alice were doing a new album after they got back together with William as their new vocalist, I just assumed they'd work with Toby again. The _Last Action Hero_ tracks, _Jar of Flies,_ the self-titled album, _Unplugged,_ and the two tracks for the box set, plus Jerry repeatedly spoke glowingly of him in the box set liner notes. Not sure why they didn't, I always thought Nick Raskulinecz was, like, the most over-the-top slick rock producer out there, but that's just me.
It’d definitely be cool to see them work with Toby again at some point
Do you think they ever would?
Toby Wright is such an amazing producer! Taproot's Welcome showcases that once again with how the vocals sound on that album! Harmonies all day!
I don’t really know much about Taproot, any songs you’d recommend?
@@edwarddonegal9762 sure! For heavier tracks you can check out: Poem, Facepeeler, Time /// For songs where they have a lot of harmonies going on, AIC style: Art, Mine, Like /// And for some of my favs from them: She, Calling, Everything or Violet Seas.
The song I DONT WANNA BE A SOLDIER from Mad Season outtakes is pretty awesome.
This guys is a great source of AIC history. Love it, thanks!!

This interview was truly insightful. It’s great to hear from someone that knew Layne as a person rather than just an artist and had some really kind things to say about him. After hearing so many stories from people with only tangential knowledge of Alice, it’s awesome to hear from someone that was right there in the room with them making classic albums
Side note: I loved your reaction when he talked about driving up to Seattle to record the Taproot song with Layne.
Thanks a lot man & ya I was surprised when Toby mentioned that, imagine how crazy that must have been for him given what happened

this was such an awesome interview. I love hearing the more positive side of Layne during his career. I love Layne so much no one could ever replace him.
You're welcome Chris, & for sure, it was great to hear Toby really humanizing Layne
The cream rises to the top. Once these movements are said and done and we look back we can see the truth. Like with hair metal and butt rock, bands like Bon Jovi and Poison who sold millions at the time. Even Motley Crue to an extent. They drop a few spots and the truly great bands like Cinderella, Ratt and Twisted Sister can now be seen as the acts that were the true innovators with the truly timeless music. As with those bands so with Grunge. Nirvana are the Godheads. But Alice In Chains are a close second. Soundgarden hold position. And Stone Temple Pilot, whom I thought were sorta posers at the time, have ascended to the top ranks alongside the Seattle greats. Pearl Jam are the Bon Jovi of Grunge and, though great, are not as vital (no pun intended).
Is Pearl Jame really grunge though? Could you name me some Pearl Jam songs that sound like grungy Nirvana, Alice or Soundgarden for instance?
@@edwarddonegal9762 was Bon Jovi Metal? Or even glam metal? They looked the part. Had the same hair styles. Wore the same kind of “rock star” spandex. But were they metal? That’s my point. PJ have their moments. And they are a grunge band. The lite-rock side of grunge. “Alive” is a grunge anthem wether we like it or not. If anything it punched their ticket and made them grunge Gods. I’m not really a fan of PJ but you can’t talk Grunge’s greatest hits and not include “Alive”. Or that Temple of the Dog song about “goin’ hungry”. Whatever that song is called. I forget.
I'm a 90's kid. I remember thinking that incredible rock and metal would be around forever because if you looked backwards it was and looking forward it felt like every week, every month there was some legendary band that would drop a timeless album. AIC was on my radar but there was just. so. much. music they got lost in the avalanche of Nirvana, Metallica, Soundgarden, GN'R, Pearl Jam, etc. I remember thinking, "I'll get into them later"
I didn't until last year and I consider myself so lucky I slept on them because now I get to experience them fresh
Thanks for interviews like this one. I loved learning about my favorite bands back then and I love it now
always wanted an in depth interview with toby about alice. Thank you for your work Daniel
You're welcome Marko, cheers
Alice in Chains are one of my favourite bands ever & this interview shines new light on a lot of things about them. Thank you Daniel
You're welcome Anthony, cheers
🎯💯 💯💯 I love a-lot of music from this era, it’s really hard to narrow down my favorite group because my mood & needs change, but Alice will always rank first place for me.
This dude also worked with Tantric for their first two albums. Both have a major AiC vibe to them. I'd love to interview him about his time with those guys someday. I've never heard him talk much about it
What are some of Tantric’s best songs?
@@JamesC1971breakdown is a good one
He produced my band the Villebillies debut record back in 2006, and yeh I know tantric well, from the same town
AIC unplugged is an incredible record
Such a great live band that was sadly prohibited from performing due to Laynes addiction. They were a powerhouse both plugged & acoustic.
I love that record but to be honest I like a lot of the full rock versions of those songs more
@@hangingon Just curious, who prevented AIC from performing live because of Layne's heroin addiction??🤔
@@edwarddonegal9762 Same here. Layne was a beast with his vocals earlier in his career. He was pretty far gone when they did unplugged.
I couldn't digest that unplugged album/video. Jerry pretty much covered for Layne's parts the entire time. Pretty disappointing to listen to, imo.
Thanks bro for the work you’re doing. I don’t believe any other bands from the 90s could hold a candle to AiC in terms of talent.
Thank you Thomas! Cheers bro
Loved the interview big AIC fan of course with Lane Staley
Thanks Jonnie
I know Alice In Chains has moved on, but Laynes voice will not ever be replaced.
Layne* 😤
It's so sad that he's not here anymore. He was so talented n he's the best vocalist EVER! Love you Layne .rest easy
Layne;s music made me not to abuse substances - despite critics who say AiC glamorized drugs. I recall in an interview with Layne to regarding fans coming up to Layne saying they were high, and that was the opposite of what the music intended. What hurts most is not his passing. Instead what hurts is Layne becoming a recluse and his life of hell.
Thank you, Daniel for your phenomenal interview with AIC's producer, Toby Wright. It was both informative with new revelations & confirmative of "stories" that had floated around for years. Throughout your interview, I'd no sooner think of a follow-up question I'd love to have an answer to, & you were literally asking it. I thought this interview was incredibly respectful & non-intrusive of Mr. Wright's personal relationships with Layne & Jerry. And I believe your admiration, respect & love for AIC shone brightly throughout your conversation with Mr. Wright which led to entertaining stories from years so long ago. This is an interview that I'll come back to, time and again, hoping to pick up another nugget of information I might have mistakenly missed. Well done, Daniel.
Thats one of the best comments I've ever received Cambria, thank you so much! I really appreciate that & I think it's important for people to respectful about the subject matter. It's unfortunate when people are exploitative about things, especially given the sensitivity of Layne's death & how it still impacts those who knew him. Thank you again Cambria, this comment made my day
@@DanielSarkissian You're welcome, Daniel. I was fortunate enough to find your channel the other day after watching AIC Unplugged for probably the 100th time. I swear, there's nothing better than watching AIC Unplugged on a big flat screen tv with the surround sound on blast! I know I'm not the only fan who still longs for stories of long ago from family & friends of the band, and your interview more than filled that void. Daniel, as a viewer, I really appreciated the calmness & even flow of words between you & Mr. Wright (if that makes any sense). You could tell he felt comfortable with the flow of the interview too. Because sadly, it seems that manners & respect have been replaced with cringe & gotcha questions these days.
Thank you Cambria, and absolutely I know what you mean, I feel like unfortunately a lot of interview are conducted in a manner where the person being interviewed is treated like a product: The interviewer is just trying to get a controversial soundbite without any regard for the well being of the person. I find that not only disrespectful but also bad journalism. I think when you are respectful, not only is that the proper way to behave but it also leads to a better interview because people are more relaxed and comfortable. Again, thanks for your feedback Cambria, really did make my day
Wow, this interview is so good dude, i mever even knew Layne did a cover on a pink floyd song, great video man!
Thanks man, and ya that's a cool little tidbit that's not very well known

Appreciate that! Budget limitations are actually a great way to force you to focus on quality instead of flashiness lol
Great interview, dude! I would imagine the clipping vocal part that was brought up would be on I Stay Away. I always hear a little bit of crackling/distortion on the loud "IIIII staaaayyyy awaaaayyyy" parts. Just my two cents.
Thanks Tyler! & ya I think that's the song too

You posed the question to Toby that Jonathan Plum brought up about Layne's voice clipping. I think the song on JoF where it is happens frequently is Don't Follow. When Layne sings his section there are multiple instances where it is very noticeable when he hits the high notes. I've noticed it a while ago, and I really love it!
Thanks again for interviewing Toby!

11:33 It's the first time we hear about this piece of information. Even in his last year of life, Layne still wanted to produce more music. His body was discovered the same day he was supposed to record a new song 😢
Actually something I enjoyed. He still had that m9tivation to create right up till the end. Love that! And never knew that.
Do you think Layne would have been able to keep going if he stopped the drugs?
Thank you. This was incredible for me to view. I was in high school and skipped school the day Jar of Flies came out. I drove around all day listening to the cassette over and over. I felt so alive that day.
You're welcome! That's an awesome story, man that must've been awesome getting Jar of Flies the day it came out
Junkies often feel disrespected…when it’s usually them who are being disrespectful. I love AIC. But anyone that dope hungry/sick starts to become inconsiderate of everyone around them. They live in their own world.
You should try watching Dee Dee Ramones hour plus long mess on RUclips.
I guess you must know everybody.
@@scottashe984 You just have to know one junkie to know them all. But yea…I know a few. Layne was, admittedly, inconsiderate of dates set to record with his band. Kept everyone waiting. Wouldn’t persist. Would leave and not come back half way through recording. Likely to get more dope. It’s not an opinion. It’s just how a junkies mind works. Their whole world revolves around their drug habit.
@Mary Ratliff It was completely different for Layne. He had money and dod not run out. He came prepared, so trying to compare him to a regular user is wrong he did not have to live like that ... He always had what he needed....
It really wasn’t heroin that Layne was into after the dirt era. I think your junkie prejudice/bigotry is probably wrong because he was more reliable when it was just dope. He got into crack, which stopped everything, stopped the tours, and he started getting flakey.
Great interview!

I don't know how you do it but every interview that I watch of yours is incredible. Great back story to songs or albums. By the way Metallica the reason why they got haircuts. One of the guys stated in a interview when they were on tour They kept getting stopped and searched etc. Go through a whole long process because they had long hair. Jason had short hair at times and was not harassed or stopped as much going through customs. Also the girls Jason was dating or Hooking up with were more Attractive. my favourite music of Laynes was with Mad Season...hard to beat that sound and as I understand it Layne wrote and composed most of their music...just shows his brilliance and that voice, man, you cant beat that voice and his range..
Get Born Again is one of my favorite from their catalog, it always invokes the season of Fall in my mind so whenever the days get shorter and the air gets colder, it's one of my go-to songs. Definitely sounds different in terms of the mix, it comes in very heavy and then sounds a bit lethargic and softer than usual for an AIC song. But I love the trailing vocal and guitar tones near the end, it just lacks the overall energy that I think many would associate with the group. I definitely don't hear it as being nu-metal influenced, but will have to relisten with that observation in mind. Fantastic interview, really appreciate the video!
Bro i swear get born again is one of their best the guiter tone and that riff is my favorite thing ever i wanna learn to do that bro its so eerie

@@DanielSarkissian btw to me personally it's a great thing and huge achievement for you, to meet and have a long interview with a guy who had worked with Layne for years and earned his trust ( personally what you did is a f****g history ). I think Layne trusted Tobby first because he wouldn't intervene in his personal life and complained all the time about his drug use like the other members of the band did and it's so hard for a producer to work with a H addict cos he's gonna waste lot of time repeating and correcting mistakes that could be barely done by non addict people.

You're welcome Chris, and agreed, Toby was a fantastic person to speak with
This was really awesome information. Thank you for this great interview, Daniel. I had no idea of the individual creative aspects that Jerry and Layne contributed to the music. To how Layne worked the mic, for example, to create his sound. Or the fact that they both knew how they each wanted a song to play out, from the beginning which Toby had to consider in the end result. Their harmonizing, etc. Very interesting also to hear that working with Alice in Chains was the most amazing experience for Toby. Since he had many. He had to learn how they each thought or created to be able to produce the songs that became great. Along with the great contributions by Sean and Mike, of course. The whole process must've been fascinating to be involved in live. It did make the demise and loss of Layne even more sad, however. They were such a great band, there was no telling all they could have done. Thankful for what we have is the only way I can look at it.
I know Toby Wright personally, he produced my bands debut record, and yeh i remember him being really hurt when Layne passed. Hes a great guy
Thank you for doing this interview, for all AIC buffs this is true gold hearing directly from the producer of Jar of Flies, the dog album and the Unplugged show who also happened to be very close to Layne. Thanks again.

Toby is a great person. He had my back, when another certain band didn’t. Let me know if you want the full story someday.
I love Layne and all of Alice. I don't care if they weren't perfect human beings. I'm not myself.
From the artistical and documentary point of view, this is a great interview, and Daniel is always on point with his questions. However I'm a little bit tired of hearing these people who call themselves Layne's "best friend", or claim things like "I was the only only he really trusted", "he was like a brother to me", and such BS. I mean, if they cared so much, why on earth he was found after 2 weeks he had passed? In the case of this gentleman in particular, if he was really on his way to record something with Layne, hadn't it been reasonable (especially knowing how poorly Layne was doing and the fragility of his condition) to confirm it a couple days earlier just to make sure everything was OK instead of boarding a plane without speaking to him for two weeks? Seriously, even when I don't question mr Wright's profesionalism, that story sounds positively off.
Thank you Laura for your kind words & thanks for your honest feedback
