    "Just throw a guitar at Jerry or a microphone at Layne..." That just shows how natural and God-given their talent and abilities are. Even many entrenched musical artists struggle with the creative process, but these guys...wow. Would love to be a 'gopher' for AIC for like, a week. Just to hang out with them on their own terms, hear stories, jokes, laughter, watch the creative process, etc. As much as I'd love to hang with Jerry and/or Layne, it's really SEAN that seems to draw me in (funny always has). He just seems really sharp witted, and add that to his snarkiness, and I'd walk away with a face sore from laughter.

      I'm sure they spent many years toiling learning their instruments and vocal styles not to mention countless hours on tour performing that added emensily to their creative and musical abilities.

    Mark Lanegan pretty much explained what's going on here.
    Layne probably needed to get high, so he didn't have unlimited time for multiple takes.
    Listening to Layne perform in concert you can tell when he's just done with Alice but he's contractually obligated to perform and make new records.
    I could imagine since Layne was so talented it was spiritually crushing to be locked into the responsibility of making music for money.
    And Jerry was going through his emotions watching the band come apart.
    But if course all this angst created a lot of once a lifetime music. If only it could have lasted a bit longer.

      My ex worked with them a lot. Layne wasn't using during Lollapolooza or the week they recorded JOF. I remember when he came home and played the songs for me after he mixed them. The band hadn't even heard them yet. I was blown away by the song arrangements, but they really weren't mopey-dopey, doom & gloom kinda guys at all so I didn't find the songs to be an omen or even autobiographical at the time. Remember, this was 1993. They were at the top of their game but still weren't big enough to headline enormadomes. That was the real crossroads for them. Jerry wanted more and Layne didn't need the same. I've always thought their break-up should be obvious based on their drugs of choice. They were all partiers. Imagine a controlling, judgemdental, coked out of his gourd Jerry Cantrell coming at you 24/7. Now imagine Layne in the opposite frame of mind nodding off with a crack pipe trying to navigate around that. The inner circle will never tell why it all really went down, but I assure you addiction was not the main reason for their "hiatus". Layne was a very deliberate person. He always knew what he was doing.

      @@CatJolieI think Layne didn't like fame, he loved music though but the addiction usually occupies most of your thoughts . His mom said he didn't want to tour again because there was a lot of drug but he felt obligated because of contracts.

    This interview is gold! I was just wondering about the vocal track on 'I Stay Away' the other day. The clipping is very noticeable towards the end of the song, but it really adds to the mindblowing power of Layne's performance.

    Describing how Jerry was controlling or whatever, you kind of have to be if 2 of the 4 guys in the band are addicted to heroin and pills/heroin (Mike Starr). Someone had to lead and ensure they actually recorded some music. If not for Jerry, Layne might not have cared enough to get any of this music made. Sad, but possibly true.

    I feel like they’re talking about “Am I Inside” off of ‘Sap’ a lot here. That song breezes between major and minor melodies really quick inside of one stanza. It’s easily the most underrated AIC song, in my opinion. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. It really encompasses everything about depression, and the need to stifle it with drugs.

    My impression of what really broke the band apart completely and I might be wrong but nobody talks about how Layne changed so much after Mike Starr was kicked out. Layne and Mike were a pair like Jerry and Shaun were a pair. When the new Mike came on the scene he fit better with Jerry and Shaun. What do you think?

    • @kiekko673
      @kiekko673 Год назад +5

      All I know is that when they started the European
      tour with Inez, Layne was mostly hanging out with
      Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees were opening for
      them). I think he talked about it in his book.
      Was a great gig btw. I thought that Layne was sober,
      because he was simply brilliant, but Mark says, that they
      were doing dope together on that tour.
      After that, I think they did the Lollapalooza, and what
      I’ve heard, Layne was always hanging with the members
      of other bands. Don’t know, were there really any problems
      in the band at that time, or was it just the fact, that he was
      a junkie, and the other guys weren’t. 🤷‍♂️

    • @halloween4505
      @halloween4505 Год назад +4

      What broke the band up, was Layne's addiction. Period. His addiction gave us some of the best music ever made but it also is the same reason it was cut so short. The man literally saved so many lives with what little we got from him.

    • @ArielAriel-rg8ng
      @ArielAriel-rg8ng 9 месяцев назад

      @@halloween4505agree. A heroin addict thinks most of the time about heroin. Everything comes second, so I think Layne lost interest and Jerry was mad at him for this, because Layne was an essential piece of the band. I think Jerry felt his dreams could be destroyed because of Layne's addiction.

    So sad how addiction just drives wedges between people, there's no reasoning or successful relating with severe addicts. I feel such empathy for Jerry in this but such sadness for Layne. If you have ever loved an addict, it's repeatedly devastating. It seems like they all got along fine until heroin really had Layne.

    I do feel like the band (and what I heard from sources close to these people) fell apart because the members didn’t get along that well like you think they did. And this happens to so many bands.
    What I think is that Jerry and Layne were best buds at the very beginning. Layne was still a very outgoing and bubbly person back then. (Remember they both came from the hair metal scene first.) Layne and Jerry were both coke heads back then, which resonates with their personalities at that time. I feel like Alice in Chains was more Jerry’s child than it was Laynes. And when they got big, this pressure and responsibility + addiction got the best of Jerry. Really amplifying his controlling nature. Layne was NOT into the fame in the same way Jerry was. Jerry was a show off, he liked the lifestyle. Layne was very humble, really living in his own world. He didn’t really think about it in the same way. I think the pressure from Jerry made Layne turn more into himself and close himself off. And I also think this is the very reason he got in touch with opiates/downer drugs. He needed to cool off. He needed to release. People say Jerry looked at Layne a lot during performances because he cared so much about his brother that was slowly dying. And I do believe that’s partly true, but I also believe that Jerry did that out of control. He was constantly making sure Layne was good enough. The rest of the band was just having a great time, Jerry was monitoring Layne constantly, also Mike Starr occasionally.
    I feel like Jerry knew Layne was the powerhouse of the band, and needed him to get to the stardom he wanted, so in order to keep Layne well enough to perform he kicked Mike out of the band. I think Jerry was behind this idea as much as the management. Mike was the person Layne felt comfortable with. And they could do their own little bad things together. Mike however was probably not as important as Layne in Jerry’s eyes so he got rid of him and thought he could be easily replaced.
    I feel like this is what really drove the band apart. And what made Layne a recluse. He felt controlled constantly. By his management and band members. That and the insane lifestyle of the road and withdrawals. They could all have seen it coming. It would have been smarter if they saw him as an actual person, and not a money machine. They should have gave the band a year or 6 months off to all get in shape, make sure layne gets to be with his family, and check him into rehab. But they didn’t. It was all forcefully not in a caring way.
    That’s probably also why he felt so alone
