In the United States, is best if you use 9 and 3 or 8 and 4 positions. This will protect you from the impact of the airbag if you get into a accident.

@@dixienormas407 Did it? I thought the 10 and 2 position was the old technique. I just completed my driver's education class a little over a year ago and they said it's better to keep your hands at 9 and 3 or 8 and 4. This was in Rhode Island and my friends in Massachusetts also learned the same thing. My parents were taught to use 10 and 2 when they took driver's education in New York about 24 to 27 years ago. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it's best to use 9 to 3 on the steering wheel. I could be wrong though.

Never cross your hands, always two hands on the wheel, 10 & 2 or 9 & 3 are the best, always keep your thumbs on the outside of the wheel almost as if you’re giving a thumbs up (in case of a crash, your thumbs will not get caught when the airbag blows up. I know a few who did this and one had a thumb taken off because of it)

Personally I found my instructor was very impressed when I had one palm right on the airbag. You just kinda twist your hand and it helps you keep control of the car, especially if you don't have power steering. You have to accelerate very quickly though

The safest options are 9 and 3, or 10 and 2. 7 and 5 doesn’t give you as much control as you should have and hand over hand is just dangerous. I had to sit through 30 hours of driving school- Trust me, I know 😐

When I first started driving lessons I religiously kept my hands at 10 and 2. However with me being short and having short arms my steering was inaccurate and stiff.
I learned 9 and 3 is far more comfortable and my steering vastly improved
