  • www.denlorstool... How to remove broken taps, easy outs and drill bits. When working on cars one of the most difficult problems I can remember is dealing with broken bolts, taps or easy outs. Broken bolts can be anywhere on the car. It can be broken manifold bolts, head bolts, transmission bolts, accessory... really anywhere. The problem is the same no matter where the bolt is. Removing the broken bolt without damaging the threads if possible and moving on to complete the job. When removing a broken bolt, it's best to use a center punch to mark the center of the broken bolt. This helps prevent the drill bit from walking off to the side so you can drill down the center. Using a left handed drill bit is a good idea. And it's a good idea to keep some left handed drill bits handy just for this purpose. When drilling the center of the broken bolt with a left handed drill bit, sometimes the bit can catch the bolt and spin it out of the hole. This can happen if the bolt is just broken and the threads are still good and not crossed. If the bolt comes out your problem is solved. If the bolt does not spin out when using the left handed drill bit, an easy out (EZ Out) broken bolt extractor can sometimes be used. The EZ out can sometimes grab the broken bolt and remove it. Be careful though. Sometimes people put too much force on an EZ out and it can break off too. It's anything but easy to remove. The metal compound that drill bits, EZ out bolt extractors and thread taps are made of is very hard and brittle. A regular drill bit cannot drill into them. There are companies that base their entire business on broken tap and extractor removal. They use specialized equipment to disintegrate the broken material. These are companies are are hard to find and sometimes the entire piece has to be removed, stripped and shipped to them for removal of the broken piece. It is simply not feasible to remove an engine, and ship a bare block to a company to remove a broken piece of tooling. We have been selling the rescue bit. The rescue bit looks like a normal bit, but the metal compound is harder than what's used for drill bits, taps and easy outs. What it can do is truly amazing. Check out the video to see what it does. It's definitely worth a try before seeking out a specialty broken tooling removal company and possibly having to ship a heavy piece half way across the country. I just want to send a BIG THANK YOU to DenLors Tools! I bought the Rescue Bit after snapping an EZ-Out off in my GT40P cylinder head. Tried many things to get it out and none worked except for the Rescue Bit, within a few minutes of starting the process I had the broken EZ-Out ground away using the Rescue Bit and was able to drill out the remainder of the broken stud and re-tap! Well worth the money spent on it, saved me a trip to the machine shop.

      red390gt Hey that's great! The Rescue Bit is not invincible but it can work in many cases and is worth the risk when options are few. Have a great weekend.

    I bought two Rescue bit, made a sleeve in which I inserted both bits end to end, silver soldered, and cut the broken easy-out out. Now I must re-thread the hole as part of the internal threads were also cut on one side.

    So what do you do if your ezout has broken in the drilled broken bolt, and then you break the rescue bit in the back of the ezout ? 8|

  • @DenLorsTools
    @DenLorsTools  10 лет назад

    Spoif, if you broke an EZ out and a Rescue Bit - you may be able to use a small bit and drill all around the EZ Out to loosen it up enough to remove it. Otherwise depending on what's being worked on, you may be looking at replacing the unit or sending it to a specialist that uses a broken tap disintegrator that burns the broken pieces out. The Rescue Bit is not a cure all but it does provide a way to drill out a broken tap (economically) which is normally NOT drill-able. Since options are limited and the Rescue Bit is capable of saving time and money it is well worth trying.

    I have a 1/4" easy-out broken off in a broken off head bolt on a Honda Passport with aluminum block. The broken bolt is about 2 3/8" down before you get to the easy-out. I compared another easy-out of the same size and estimate there is only about 1/4" to 3/8" of the easy-out that is broken off. If correct, I then add the 2 3/8" plus the 3/8" which equals 2 3/4" to get through the broken easy-out. This only leaves about 1/4" left on the Rescue-bit to grab with the drill. Is that going to be enough? If the Rescue-bit is to short, does your company make a longer Rescue-bit, or a longer drill bit that could drill out the easy-out?

      ***** Only a 1/4" in the drill chuck might be enough. The Rescue Bit currently comes only in 3" lengths. So I'm not sure that will work in you situation. Especially since our bits are double ended, which usually means you would want to place them all the way down in the chuck. There's no other tool that we sell or that I'm even aware of besides the Rescue Bit that's capable of drilling an Easy Out. Perhaps you can use a small drill bit to drill beside the broken tool, enough to get it loosened up for removal. Then use a thread repair kit from Time Sert that we sell to repair the threads in hole. Time Sert Kits place a solid bushing type insert in the hole which is stronger than the original threads. See Time Sert at DenLorsTools.com or our second website WiseAutoTools.com. Good Luck.

      ***** You have the same issue as I do. Bolt in aluminum block deep access. Drill doesn't reach.
      Here is what I did. (I am waiting for the Rescue Bit) I am drilling a 1/8 hole. I bought a piece of steel brake line (already made up) 12 inches long. The shaft of the drill bit fits perfect into the line. I then mig-welded it. You can also solder it. The bolt is too hard for standard bits. Waiting for the RB. Let me know how you make out!

    Just ordered one to take the drill bit my uncle broke on my valve cover.
    Will post on the outcome.
    My valve cover will keep leaking until it arrives. Hopefully this will save time and money.

    Th@nk you for your time.... how bout when the shaft is 4" long in other words before i get to the broken thread i have to go through a 3-4" shaft is there spring taps tgat long? Or the reverse thread tool that long?

    • @DenLorsTools
      @DenLorsTools  10 лет назад

      The Rescue Bit is only 3" long. The thread repair tools may not be long enough. It depends on what size we are talking about. Also how long does the threaded part measure... So Need the size of the bolt and the length of the threaded part.

    What is the best tool to use a rescue bit to drill out taps/easy outs? dremel or drill?

    • @DenLorsTools

      Most guys use a drill or a 1/4" air die grinder. If using a 1/4" die grinder no additional collet adapter is needed. If using 1/8" or 3/16" we have collet adapters that fit so the 1/8" or 3/16" Rescue Bit can be inserted and used. A die grinder could work I suppose if it will accept the diameter bit being used. How about a broken wp bolt but broken bolt isnt visible into designated shaft below cooling tubes (bmw)

    • @DenLorsTools
      @DenLorsTools  10 лет назад

      Roberto thanks for the question. I wouldn't use the Rescue bit unless the water pump bolt metal compound is so hard that regular drill bits can't cut into it. You could go directly to a Rescue Bit. However, Rescue Bits are mostly designed to drill out broken tools like broken thread taps, broken EZ Out or other brand extractors. Also for broken drill bits or broken hardened bolts that drill bits cannot drill through very well. We do have some customers that use the Rescue bit to drill out spot welds and even broken glow plugs.
      Regardless of what you use to drill out the broken water pump bolt in the shaft on the BMW you're working on, it will be difficult without seeing what you're drilling. I would try a mirror and a spring loaded center punch to make a starting point to drill in the center of the broken bolt. This will help keep the drill bit from going off center while drilling. I know, it's easier said than done.
      Keep in mind that we also sell Time Sert thread repair kits to repair the threads if needed once the broken piece is out. That's if you can't clean them up with a thread chaser sufficiently. Time Sert uses solid bushing type inserts that are far better than the thin coil of wire like Heli Coil uses. We have many different sizes depending on what size the bolt is. And the replacement insert accepts the original size bolt after the repair. Not sure what size you're working on, but say if it's an M8x1.25 you may want the following kit. www.denlorstools.com/home/dt1/page_47585_273/time_sert_1812__m8x1.25_metric_thread_repair_kit.html Good Luck nad let us know if we can be of further assistance. www.denlorstools.com/

    If you can weld another bolt or nut to it

    • @DenLorsTools
      @DenLorsTools  10 лет назад +1

      roxydog2004 I would say no. Welding to the Rescue Bit would heat it up and damage the temperament of the metal, possibly making it break easier or dull quicker. That's if it's even possible to weld something onto it. Unfortunately, if the broken tool that you want to drill is deeper down in the hole than the 3 inch Rescue Bit can reach, you will likely need to find a different method to extract it. Sorry for the bad news, but we never try to provide too high of expectations. We would rather lose a sale than promise something that's not likely to deliver. With that being said we are very happy with the over-all feedback we've received on this USA made product. And it can and has saved our customers alot of time and money.

      DenLorsTools I had a lug nut that stripped and I welded another nut to it and go it off! ,so In some cases it works !

      roxydog2004 Oh, yeah sometimes that works. When you said - If you can weld another bolt or nut to it? on your previous comment - I thought you were asking if you could weld onto the Rescue Bit to make it reach further. Glad you got the job done. Thanks for the comments.

    I'm seeing a lot of videos and advice forums for bolts broken perfectly with a flat top but what if the bolt has been broken at an angle like what my mom has been dealing with her 2001 Tahoe manifold has a broken bolt that's unevenly broken so when she tries to drill it slides off and can cause damage any suggestions it's the last the she has to do on her truck

    • @DenLorsTools
      @DenLorsTools  10 лет назад +1

      Jerome Young If you can use a small punch to make a dimple, even if you have to go on an angle slightly, that will provide a starting place for drilling. I'd start drilling on an angle a little until the bit bites in. Then slowly straighten the drill. I know this is easier said than done, but that's what I'd try. Keep in mind that if the threads are damaged after the broken bolt is finally drilled out, we sell Time Sert thread repair kits which are much better than Heli Coils, because Time Sert uses sold bushing type inserts rather than a thin coil of wire like Helicoils. Good Luck.
