    I only found your reviews recently, and I already love them. Unlike other reviews, which discuss stats, ideal builds and whether you should get one, you instead talk about how it *feels* to fly one. The mix of power and agility in the chieftain, or the reluctance to go home while flying a DBX. I'm reminded of car shows like Top Gear, you talk about these ships as if they have a soul, and that they exist today.
    The beautiful scenery you use looks much better than a static docking hanger too.

      The DBS is my favorite ship. It is agile in combat, runs cold, has great jump range, 4 utility slots, 4 weapon slots, and has a very modest price. Once it is engineered, it’s a very fun and versatile ship... you can easily get 600+ boost with 40+ Ly jump in the same build, while running good weapons and armor. It’s perfect for anyone who enjoys rail guns, and is hands down the best stealth craft in the game. I’ve taken this ship 20,000 Ly in one trip and never regretted it. I do agree it appeals to pilots who enjoy a challenge. There are better ships at combat, and better ships at exploration. But there is no small ship that balances combat and exploration as well as the DBS. You can get in this ship and do whatever you want...and mid trip you can change your mind and do something else. it’s the best small ship in the game when it comes to versatility.

    4:30 - The DBS or DBX intended to be a shuttle for something like a Type-9? There definitely was a Diamondback-sized flat deck on top of the T9. Something to consider with carriers soon to come.

    I personally love the DBS as a combat vessel. It never occurred to me to build it as a stealth ship, though -- with thermal vent beams as you're doing. I use its insane heat efficiency as a perfect excuse to equip PAs and rails. Go FA-off, and you can easily park in the dead zone of an Anaconda and blast it to pieces. Sure, it takes some skill, but it just feels great to take down much larger vessels with an undervalued little beast such as the DBS.

It's still a fun ship to fly, but its advantages are mostly gone.

    • @dreyone6156

      just a friendly reminder that with the correct weapons you can basically 1-shot a prismatic shield by sniping their shield generator. You can use those torpedos or mines with that experiment effect to go through the shield. once their shield is down your dbs's railguns will insta-kill their modules, provided you can stay on target
      shield tanks are only strong when not facing opponents specifically outfitted to kill them

    That intro makes me grin like a madman. Well said. Some of my best ED moments are with my DBS. Winning a 2v1 against an FAS and a Krait. Proceeding to pummel the poor FAS with dumbfires until it blew up, all the way helplessly drifting through the void because the drives left this world a minute ago. He didn't leave the game. For atleast a minute. Until he blew up. I still feel bad about it. Or winning a duel against a buddy by disabling his weapons. Even though he's a better pilot than me. I love this ship. Because I love cheating by exploting niches. Perfect for me. Nightvision kinda killed it.

  • @Coyleravane
    @Coyleravane 3 года назад +2

    The DBS used to be an amazing small fighter, even with a shield. It had the best blend of speed and manoeuvrability in the game. It was the introduction of Enhanced Performance thrusters which killed it, as suddenly all the other small ships with Class 3 or smaller thrusters went from being slower and/or less manoeuvrable, to more. The DBS lost it’s speed and agility advantage, but still isn’t tanky enough or hard hitting enough to take on bigger ships.

    • @dreyone6156
      @dreyone6156 3 года назад

      it can still hurt those bigger ships pretty good for a ship of its size/price, in the right hands

    • @Coyleravane
      @Coyleravane 3 года назад

      @@dreyone6156 it's a handicap though. I have a Krait Phantom which has roughly the same or slightly better speed and agility, much more armour and firepower and runs only slightly hotter (my stealth DBS runs at 14% heat when not boosting or shooting, my phantom runs at 15%). There is simply no advantage to the DBS, other ships can do everything better.
      The DBS will always have a special place in my heart, but it needs a buff to be a competitive choice

    • @dreyone6156
      @dreyone6156 3 года назад

      @@Coyleravane undoubtedly it requires a lot more skill to use, but it's better heat efficiency is it's strength. It might not completely balance it against the other ships, but in the hands of a skilled pilot and outfitted correctly, it still gives them a run for their money. I can get a dbs down to 10% heat when idle not cool running. Even colder if I turn off life support and some other modules that aren't needed in combat. That, combined with its smaller hit profile is it's advantage. It's probably the hardest ship to hit in combat in the game. Compared to the krait, which has a much larger hitbox and slightly worse heat efficiency, it has the advantage in being harder to hit. I actually like attacking ships like the krait because they have such a big hit box when attacking them from above or below. It's practically impossible to miss them with the DBS's railguns, even at range

    • @Coyleravane
      @Coyleravane 3 года назад

      @@dreyone6156 The hitbox is a valid point, but I don't think the heat is enough of an advantage. The krait phantom is only 1-2% hotter with a similar build., and can also be built to run below 10%. I have dirty drives on mine and it still runs at only 15%, and I can get it below 10% idle just by de-activating un-needed modules like my fuel scoop, AFMU, FSD interdictor etc. and with the larger powerplant and hardpoints I can run short range, thermal vent beam lasers and have my cockpit frosting over even in the middle of combat.
      I'm not saying it is unusable, but I don't think it has any advantages even close to outweighing its disadvantages any more. Before engineering, it had a real niche, with the best balance of speed and agility of all small ships, but ships like the viper and courier now get access to the enhanced performance thrusters which really gives them a big edge over the DBS, while the gulf in hitpoints and firepower to medium and large ships has only got bigger.
      IMO the DBS is now effectively a "challenge mode" ship, one you use because you want a challenge, not because it is the best ship for a particular playstyle.

    • @dreyone6156
      @dreyone6156 3 года назад +1

      @@Coyleravane It's still an extremely annoying ship to deal with for gankers running gimballed FDLs and mambas. Unless they go back to the station and rearm with emissives (which they will sometimes eventually do after I piss them off enough), they actually have a really hard time fighting the DBS.
      Certainly, against skilled pilots in larger ships (or just ships that are outfitted with emissives to counter the stealth) the DBS is at a pretty big disadvantage, but against your average seal-clubbing ganker who uses gimballed weapons and whose only kills ever are unarmed Asp Explorers who were landing at Farseer, the DBS is quite a menace
      They just sit there angrily trying to hit it with their gimballed multi cannons, beams and frags and only manage to do 5% hull damage every few minutes. It's pretty hilarious. The frags are probably the most dangerous out of those three since some of their spread will often still hit you even when successfully evading their fire, but the damage you take from only a portion of their "pellets" is quite low compared to a full volley.
      Aside from emissives and frags the only other weapons to really worry about are rails and missiles. Seekers and packhounds can really mess up your modules and take no skill to use, but simply toggling silent running throughout the fight is usually enough to deny them a target lock. Railguns are the biggest threat, and only when they're used by a skilled player with good aim (since they only come in fixed form) and hitting a DBS with them can be a lot easier said than done. A couple well placed railgun strikes will quickly destroy your power plant, however.
      TL;DR version: DBS is a great little counterganking ship as most gankers are not particularly skilled players and rely heavily on gimballed weapons to do the aiming for them. Gimbals cant lock onto a properly flown and outfitted DBS, unless they are also running emissives (which most of them are not, unless you piss them off a few times and they specifically equip them to counter your build)

    Just bought the DBS as my 2nd ever ship. First was the Viper mk3.
    Seems to me for what I need it is near perfect. My exploration is across relative tight knit systems. I’m building my cash pot and this thing let’s me taken on almost any low level mission, so I can efficiently grab a cargo delivery, courier run, assassination, massacre (all the except maybe mining and Passengers). And just crack on through them. It’s stealth helps keep most people off, it’s combat means I can handle myself if I do get caught. It’s range, for the price, seems to be exceptional.
    It won’t last me forever. I’m sure there are ships that do every one thing better, but for now, to get things going, I can’t think of anything better.

    The DBS has a particular niche: Planetary missions. Sure, ANY ship can land on a planet and deploy its little toy car. The DBS is special in its surprising toughness, stealth capabilities, and its narrow fire pattern. Throw on a lot of point defense systems, and you have an ideal ship for 'less than friendly' planetary ops. you can dumbfire rocket generators, or get out of dodge with the alarms blaring and a patrol craft hot on your ass. You can also easily smuggle out stolen goods found planetside along the way and comfortably stealth your way into the black markets as well.

    When the concept art for the Diamondback was first revealed I thought it was going to be a smuggling ship. Turned out it doesn't have much cargo capacity. I still wish the final ship design looked more like that concept art though. I haven't played in a few years, but I flew the Scout exclusively since its release.

      @@Datan0de we all (usually) go for thermal stealth, we just toggle silent running to drop our heat and/or pop heat sinks. railguns are the meta even on stealth builds. With the right outfitting your DBS will lose heat after firing railguns very quickly, you might pop up on the enemy's sensors for a second or two before disappearing again

    I use my DBS for planetary landings relatively close to the bubble and as a bubble bus. It's got enough range to get it where I want it to in that region, it's cheap enough that I can summon it across the bubble without worrying about it, and it's got enough speed to make planetary landings a breeze. The fact it can carry more than enough firepower to deal with most ground targets doesn't hurt either.
    It's just a pity I hardly ever do planetary stuff, especially if I'm not out exploring. But hey, it's enough fun to fly on those rare occasions I do want to dirty the SRV's wheels a bit.

    I've been playing for a few years. And I love my dbs for combat. Somehow It feels better. Even with a shield, 2 thermal vent bams and your still running so cold you can't be hit. It's fast and mobile. It's not tough but I've never felt right getting shot at anyway. It might not be great at any part of combat, but it's well balanced. It's both fast and mobile. It can pack a punch and take one. It doesn't have heat or power issues. Sure you can't go so heavy on the power plant, but your never going to have an issue as long as you don't try to unblanace it

    For supposedly being a "explorer" ship, she's been an oddly good friend in climbing up the bounty hunter rung as a beginner; Hell it even looks like an old world style helicopter gunship. It's the first ship affordable to me at my lower skill level in PvE combat that feels like it gives me room to make mistakes without immediately being sent back to the hanger even against just "Competent" level ships. Agility feels strangely good, I find the placement of the Class 2 hardpoints to be way better than the Viper Mk3's (goddamn bottom mount), the shields are kinda eh but tolerable for the targets I'm able to handle right now, I still have a decent amount of Class 2 module compartments even after outfitting it to my combat needs so I could add maybe a little cargo space later on, etc etc. She feels like the first combat ship I've owned that doesn't hate me for my admittedly rusty, subpar piloting skills. Named mine "The Quiet", she's a keeper even after I get more ships.

    It would actually be nice to have all those hidden game mechanics shown ingame, for example heat or shield coefficient. It was boggling my mind as to why the Imperial Clipper with it's level 7 shield could not compete with the values of some other ships that only had a Level 6 in them. Similar as to why some ships with absolutely identical MW draw and setup had different heat dissipation speeds. Fdev, please...
    Edit: That being said, it's not exactly true to say that certain manufacturers have better heat capacities than others. It comes down to individual ships. If you fit a Type 7 with the exact same things as a DBX (downsizing a few things on the T7 and disabling Life support and sensors on both) you will get different heat outputs. Originally I thought this was just something about small ships vs large ships, but other small ships like the Cobra have terrible heat management too. It really comes down on a ship to ship basis, not manufacturer basis.

      Absolutely agree, I rely on youtubers to tell me what a ship's thermals are like. I caught myself using my DBX for combat instead of my vulture and was like, "why am I doing this...?" Subconsciously I had noticed how much easier combat is in a ship with amazing thermals.

      @Khunvyel 4 года назад

      @@boiledelephant Almost shocking to see an answer to an old comment that didn't get any traction :D Good to know people are still scouring through comments like I often do. Anyway: When it just comes to thermals, Engineering can make any ship cold. Clean tuned thrusters help a lot, and there is more than one way to deal with laser heat. The Vulture is such a monster when it comes to maneuverability that you're not really missing out much when using clean tuning compared to dirty tuning.

      No. The DBX is slightly bigger, less manueverable and much less suited for combat. The DBS has a smaller hitbox, tighter handling and better heat efficiency. The DBX was never designed for combat, it was designed for exploration and if you use it for anything other than exploration, you're using it wrong.
