      The Phantom makes a better explorer than the AspX, I'll agree to that. But with a full exploration outfit, the Phantom is twice as expensive as the AspX, but not twice as good.

      I still have my DBX from when It was an upgrade from my Cobra Mk III (which I a bought again.) Now my DBX is; with and engineered FSD and Guardian FSD booster, a exploration ship that is like a rocket car with the biggest and with the highest number of rockets crammed into it, that I use when I go "ZOOM! Appreciated buying the Diamond Back after already getting the big ships, I kitted the ship out with little or no engineering, compared to upgrading a cutter the cost of sorting out a DBX is such a bargain.
      The jump range is just adorable, when I fancy travelling to Pleiades from the bubble I use the DBX.

    • @MB200bus
      @MB200bus 2 года назад +3

      @@adrianwilliams6577 Aren't you massively annoyed by the DBX's undersized fuel scoop? The AspX doesn't have as much jump rage as the DBX, but the AspX needs so much less time to scoop fuel that it can travel way further in an hour than the DBX...

    Ah, I remember. First big exploration run in Asp Explorer. It was before engineering and I put in an additional fuel tank (64t). That way I was able to jump for ~600LY without refuelling with the downside of having ~28LY jump range when fully fuelled. I was fun. I got about 200M credits from that run (I went to Sagittarius A*, then a left turn, scanned a few hundred neutron stars and then went back).

    I've actually found the Dolphin, a luxury liner, to be an excellent Small exploration ship. It has a 61 LY max jump (with full lightweight engineering + L5 Guardian FSD Booster) / 57 LY laden, 2G vehicle bay, L2 AFMS, L4 fuel scoop, 3D shield, planetary scanner, supercruise assist & advanced docking modules... and still has an open slot for something else, if desired!

      Oh it gets better range than that. Slap the 4A double-engineered from the CG in there, you’ll see what I mean. Got mine set up with (I think) a G2 low-emissions reactor, and as best I can tell it’s impossible to make the thing overheat. I can park in the corona of a star and have my FSD fully charged for the jump to the next one without my dash getting even a little foggy from steam.
      There’s other ships with better jump range, but I’m not aware of any that can pull that trick.

  • @CoffeeFiend1

    Always used the Anaconda myself as it's basically a mobile station. Double AFMU's and repair limpets to effect repairs and maintenance, research limpets for taking tissue samples, mining laser and SRV's for material replenishment. Cargo rack to hold your temporary limpets, big ass fuel scoops, big external fuel tanks if brown dwarf hopping, plasma slugs for fuel volume tweaking, fighter bays for surface & mountain surveys. Surface scanner, impact shield and FSD booster. You've even got room to mount a supercruise assist which is very handy when doing full-body system surveys as it allows automation (as some can take days to do). It's the Anaconda, the most internal utility matched with that extremely high jump range. Really does let you be self-sufficient and stay out there.

    After a lot of masochistic min-maxing, I finally got my Krait Phantom to do 80 LYs while still having a small shield. Here's a fun fact: you can squeeze thrusters that'd be otherwise too small onto a ship by putting it onto a smaller ship, engineering them with Mass Manager, and transferring them back to your exploration ship. Also, the gas tank is halved

    frankly, I like using the Cutter for exploration. Why? Because to me it doesn't matter as much how far you can jump, but rather how many systems you scan along the way. Which means once I am clear of the bubble I often deliberately toggle the economic jumps, rather than max-range - and just scan whatever i find (and probe metal-planets and up). May not be the most time and money-efficient way of doing things, but I like it this way.

    - Has the best Yaw rate, and overall maneuverability.
    - Has 9 optional Internals, so 5A fuel scoop.. 2 SRVs.. shields, 4 FSD Booster, Repair limpets, Field Repairs.. Even a Supercruise assist so I can make coffee while going to distant planets.

    Never fails to amaze me how people forget the Dolphin exists. It has a size 5 fuel scoop with a size 4 FSD and size 5 thrusters on a ship 90t lighter than a Vulture, and enough internals to bring along dual SRVs, repair limpets, AFMU, and a Guardian FSD booster - at size 4, but that just means half the price for 1.2ly less range. Only the Anaconda and Phantom are objectively better exploration ships, and you will never get the sense of unadulterated joy you can get canyon racing in a Dolphin when you're in an Anaconda. My main explorer ship for a long while was the Phantom but I changed to the Krait Mk2 for its cool twin thrusters, went all over the galaxy with it. Swapped to the anaconda for my recent personal misison to discover more exobiology in further regions around the galaxy (instead of the usual regions i pass through towards the centre, I went in other directions)

    Just got back into the game last month, decided to do an exploration tour with my AspX through several nebulae with my destination being the Zurrara about 12.6k ly out in the Formidine Rift. I think it was somewhere in the mid 50s for jump range at that time, I've since got the pre-eng FSD and gained several lys so it's at roughly 60lys now, I have not yet unlocked Guardian modules fwiw.
    Also once I got back in the bubble, I bought & built up a DBX for the fun of it. It gets 62.5ly with a full fuel tank, and I use larger/heavier thrusters/pp/dist than most optimized explorer dbx builds recommend, but I love the way it handles. The 4A fuel scoop sucks ballllls though, it'd be perfect otherwise. Hence why I use it as my bubble runner, I don't even scoop if I can make it without.
    I'll probably kit out my Anaconda next. I've had this like build paralysis when it comes to doing it up, unsure of what to actually outfit it for. At this point I think I'm just going to commit to a fully self-sufficient explorer build and if I want a multi-purpose Conda I can buy another one later.
    Of course, I also need to bite the bullet and just get the shit for the Guardian FSD Boosters already...
    I want to build a Krait Phantom but it's kind of unnecessary right now. I'm working on engineering like 3-4 combat ships, I have 2 exploration ships that are almost done, and two engineered Pythons for different purposes with a possible third incoming. And a general purpose Krait mk2, and about a dozen other ships I have no purpose for at the moment. A Phantom would literally just be a cooler version of the AspX that I'll never abandon. I use the Asp for far exploration, the DBX as a bubble bus, not really seeing where a Phantom fits in with the Anaconda build and the Carrier purchase coming up soon.

    I feel like the Dolphin is the most underrated ship for exploration. It's my long range exploration ship of choice.
    It has the utility of the Phantom and it's flight profile in SC and out is just a bit better. (coincidentally, I think the Phantom is number 2 for me)
    I can't stand the Anaconda for that appalling turn radius. The inability to park easily anywhere also kills the mood sometimes. That said, the Anaconda's jump range is certainly compelling in conjunction with insane internals. I don't actually think the longest jump range makes a good exploration ship though.
    The DBX lacks an internal slot. Additionally, I gladly use the 5 slot in the dolphin for a fuel scoop and use the grade 4 FSD booster. The tiny difference in jump range is more than made up for when you chop your scoop times to bits.
    ASP X also lacks a slot providing less utility. It's also far more expensive.
    I've literally never flown a hauler. I probably should give it a go. That said, I can't imagine the hauler being anything more than a great short range explorer.
    Now to be clear I'm not saying all of those ships suck. I'm just saying for the things I value in exploration the Dolphin really seems like the best ship. It never overheats, it has enough slots to have everything including backups, it's flight profile makes it easy to get around without begging your ship to turn to the next thing, it scoops quickly, and it's jump range is high enough that it can go anywhere the others can.

      Lots of people mention the dolphin for exploring. I believe them when they say it's good, just from a role playing perspective I want a utilitarian down and dirty explorer rather than a space yacht. But if you like it that's great. I found exploring means you want to be very comfortable with your ship and setup because you're going to be spending hours upon hours staring at it. That's part of why I picked the MK2 over the Phantom. Sure, a Phantom can jump me like a kid slingshotting a stinger at another kid across the classroom. But I refuse to stare at a RED interior for that many frickin light years. MK2 has nice bare bones stripped down look, soothing teal-ish paint, more visibility from within the interior, a ship launched fighter for checking out canyons and mountains and stuff, and the beloved coffee pot. It's also fairly well lit inside, so if you're tired of staring at black, you can take the camera back in the coffee break area for a few minutes and zen out. And I still get it 60ly per jump, which is plenty for me. Can't think of another ship I'd want to be stuck in the depths of dark dark space with.

      I wouldn't call the Beluga a top-tier explorer. IMO out of the Saud Kruger line the Orca is a better explorer. The Dolphin has an unparallel heat profile, but I personally prefer the Orca for its speed, jump range, and general robustness compared to the Dolphin. Beluga has a fuel scoop size and a heat problem, but I do agree that it is nearly outweighed by the stunning cockpit view

    • @maxjohn6012
      @maxjohn6012 2 года назад

      I bought a Beluga, outfitted it for exploration, and sold it almost immediately. It can't hold a fuel scoop big enough for the size of its tanks, making scooping after every jump (which just seems sensible to me) impossibly slow. I was really disappointed because I love combining exploration and long-range passenger missions... The Orca works nicely for that role though.

    • @failrail_hero312
      @failrail_hero312 2 года назад

      @@maxjohn6012 The tank is massive. Although it takes a couple laps of a star to fill a completely empty tank, it gets you pretty far on one tank. Exploration isn't necessarily about jumping as far as possible. It is about seeing everything along the way. Regardless, the view is the best in the game, which automatically makes the other less desirable aspects of the ship trivial in comparison.

    Yamiks, what about the FUN factor? Of the listed ships, only Anaconda can fit an SLF - and I found those to be essential for mental health out there in the black, especially when travelling alone. Sure you can go for flying stunts over planets with the main ship but... sooner or later it will cost you all the data. SLFs are great for breaking the monotony of exploration, be it over planetary surfaces or in asteroid rings. I'd add one more ship to the list; Krait mk. II. It has a decent range AND you can bring the fun with you. That is why it is my exploration ship for shorter distances, up to say 15kLY. Further than that and I shift to Anaconda and ride the neutron highway. There are exceptions. I went to Beagle Point in the Krait mk. II in an expedition, the company make up for shorter jump range.

It is easier to park than the conda and also great for the occasional planet mining (I hear some people do that with an SRV, where is the fun in that?) It also offers a better view of space which is a big deal in vr, the asp is still king there though.

    Asp X and Krait Phantom are overall tied for first when you factor in unthinkable exploration. Just going and not worrying. The DBX has to worry about sitting at a star forever and scooping, and the Anaconda does have to pay attention to it's route because of it's lack of fuel range. Asp X and Phantom are the sweet spot. Good scoop, and good fuel range. Personally I prefer the Asp X because I like it's canopy, and it is more maneuverable. I fit a decent thruster for canyon running when I get bored. Phantom sucks at that. Fitting better thruster and shields(for bouncing off walls while canyon running), I can still get 70ly jump range.
