    The Krait Phantom has an additional optional internal than the AspX, making it a better choice (in my humble opinion) for a long-range, deep space explorer.

    • @PearliteisHere
      @PearliteisHere 4 года назад +11

      also, in the same level of engineering the Krait Phantom has a little bit more jump distance than the Aspx

    • @JimPekarek
      @JimPekarek 4 года назад +22

      I personally think it's the best exploration ship in the game. Mine has a 70LY jump range, slightly better than my Asp's 68LY, and the Phantom doesn't look like a 1980s pickup truck inside. Part of the joy of exploring is seeing the beauty that galaxy has to offer, and the Phantom doesn't taint that beauty with a hideous cockpit. Sure, the Anaconda beats it in sheer range, but the Phantom is much more maneuverable and fun to fly, easier to scoop from neutron stars, and far more reasonable to land on planets.

  • @bujtorm
    @bujtorm 4 года назад +47

    The main reason I pick the Phantom over the AspX for taxi/exploration, is exactly the more and bigger optional internals. I don't need to make any compromises. I can mount a class 6 fuel scoop, class 5 guardian FSD booster, the SRV bay, enough AFMUs to last from Sol to Sagittarius A*, a decent shield generator that leaves room for error on planetary landings, a detailed surface scanner, and still have space for some cargo racks, limpets, supercruise assist, advanced docking computer etc. Yet it handles at least as good as the Asp, instead of being a sluggish brick like the Conda. Even with a D-rated thruster, the Phantom will boost to 540 m/s when fully engineered for an exploration fit, which means even if you get interdicted, they will need a Courier or a Mamba to catch you.

    • @bujtorm
      @bujtorm 4 года назад +3

      @Vasilis Makaronis The shield is mostly useful for NPCs indeed, but more importantly as a damage buffer for high-grav planetary landings.

      I took my anaconda on DW2 kitted out as a fuel rat. Fonda might be the best explorer in the game but I find it cumbersome and boring to fly. I kind of wish I had taken my phantom or AspX on DW2 but neither could quite be kitted out exactly as I wanted for the role. My conda was loaded up to the hilt with everything including the kitchen sink and still got 61ly jump range. Just wasn’t much fun

      I like to have the option to fly an SLF over a particulary interesting planet surface. For me it was worth about 5 ly jumprange, I just see more systems for a set distance, so more exploration. Or to goof around with other explorers on an expedition. So Mk2 is best in the class.

    Another thing which makes the MkII unique is that it's the only ship allowing you to combine the class 5 Engineered FSD V1 with a fighter bay without having any of the compartments being military.

  • @dtecta
    @dtecta 3 года назад +3

    The Phantom's armour rating is 55, the same as the Mk II's. Coriolis says 60 but this is not correct. With engineering, sustained fire power is determined by the power distributor as much as the actual weapons. Since the Phantom can use the same class-7 power distributor for one hardpoint fewer, it opens the option to engineer your weapons more aggressively. For example, on a Phantom using overcharged plasma accelerators is an option if you balance out the heat with a pair of medium thermal-vent beams. On a Mk II you'll have to pick an efficient blueprint if you fit three plasma accelerators on the large hardpoints. Two large overcharged plasmas come very close to three large efficient plasmas DPS-wise. Heat can be an issue but can be used to your advantage using the thermal conduit experimental. What you get is roughly the same fire power and a slight edge on maneuverability and speed in the Phantom.

  • @Naryoril

    The Phantom is pretty much a straight upgrade of the Asp Explorer. Much better optional internals, very slightly better jump range at the cost of a bit of cockpit view (the Phantom still has a very good cockpit view). It's probably the best exploration ship in the game, the only contender i see is the Anaconda, which has some pros and cons when compared to the Phantom.

    I have 2 phantoms. One replaced my AspX as my exploration ship due to its slightly higher jump range and better internals.
    The other is a pirate ship. It can boost almost 600, which allows it to outrun fdls, chieftains and I'm pretty sure FAS.
    The only 2 ships I need to worry about are the Mamba and Clipper.
    Reason why I like the phantom over Clipper for a pirate ship is mainly due to it being able to land at outposts.

    Been playing for a month or so. Just swapped over to the phantom from a Krait mk2, 15 minutes before this comment. I’m an explorer. I still suck at combat, but I never needed my fighter, so I switched for range and maneuverability. I thought I’d hate it. I’m an artist. I don’t care for the aesthetic of the drastically different trailing thrusters. They are so different from the main engines, it "grinds my gears." That said, the audio in this game is spectacular. As soon as I accelerated in the phantom, I didn’t care anymore. Admittedly giving up the coffee maker for a 70’s shag-wagon interior is a bit to get used to, but at least the novelty is working for me!

    The DBX may have a smaller fuel scoop, but if you are actually scanning while exploring you can just park it scooping above the star while doing the scan and it will fill up all by itself. I also have a thing for landing on top of mountains when exploring and no other exploration ship does that as well as the DBX. The Krait Phantom, AspX, and (heavens forbid) Anaconda never really seem to fit on the mountain tops where I want to land ...

    Coriolis says that the Krait Phantom has 1 m/s additional pitch rate. And i have flown both ships a lot and the Phantom handles better. Also, if you do combat with very hot weapons like railguns or PAs, the Phantom is superior because you won’t cook yourself that much. Also, if you fly it as a hull tank or hybrid, the larger internal in the Mk2 isn't important because you can only buy size 5 hull reinforcements. And the Krait Phantom is better than the ASP in almost every aspect. It has higher jump range, more internals, looks good and is faster. The only argument for the ASP is the better view.

    • @CharlesDSmith-mv7zi
      @CharlesDSmith-mv7zi 4 года назад +2

    The Krait Mk II makes an *Excellent* gunship and has some tankiness, but you *need* to keep it moving as it's description mentions it's defensive capabilities lack a shade...and it's not kidding.
    It's not *frail* by any means, but it's no Type 10.
    It also shares the name of the Krait Gunship from the old expanded Star Wars Universe. Manufactured by Mandalore Shipyards, it's pretty tough, maneuverable, armed to the teeth, and has a rear-firing turret mount on the top. It's cockpit you stand up in and is shoved all the way to the front with a bubble canopy of course😮. Great-looking ship, though, like the Krait Mk 2 and Phantom.
    Thanks for the video! Good comparison, but the Phantom is just a very well-armed exploratory ship. Yeah you can tear it up in one, but you're better off in a Mk 2 for combat. Those heavier internal slots and that 1 additional Large hardpoint make the difference.

      You don't have to be afraid about thargoids. If you make an encounter, just fly away. There is (was?) a scripted encounter where they shut down your ship and make a scan but they don't attack you and after a reboot you can continue your journey. Other encounters (interdictions) are free to leave. And others spots are signals (non human signals) where you have to enter by will, like combat zone.
      I didn't play around thargoids zones for a while, someone will correct me if I am wrong but the thing is : if you don't want to fight ET you don't need to be prepared for.

    I had the MK II outfitted for mining. Worked great until I got attacked by pirates and had virtually no protection or offensive weaponry besides one beam turret. Worth noting I had this thing set up with one each of every mining tool just so I could get everything out of an asteroid.
    Now I'm fiddling with a Python build that might not be the best at mining, but it can actually fight back now if I need to.
    Although I did so much mining when it was insanely profitable with void opals that I've gotten tired of it and trying out other means of money-making.

    I realize this is a late comment but I honestly think both of them are excellent ships that can be used for either combat or exploration because of their lightweight and hard point layout, I think the thing that kills it with people is their price range as opposed to what you’re getting because although they are awesome there are cheaper alternatives that will get the same result, That said they sound and operate amazingly so they are worth buying if you have the funds

    I find the Krait MkII to be quite a capable bug hunter.
    Though I do prefer the AspX over the Phantom for exploring, for the sole reason that I engineered and got attached to it long before the Phantom was added to the game.

    You really need both ships in my opinion, or actually all 3 if you include the Python. And I think its money better spent getting all 3, than 1 Anaconda... But I hate slow cumbersome ships that skip over exploration like they are in hurry.... to get an asteroid outpost, that they can't land on...

    I can't personally see a good reason for using a Phantom over a Mk 2 in a combat environment. But as an explorer, it's very good.

      I'm inclined to agree with you but I had a clanmate who was a diehard "small and agile" fighter player (loved his Eagles, Vultures and such) and the only medium ship she could tolerate was a Phantom. She tried kitting out a MkII but I guess the added mass made it feel a bit more sluggish. I've never seen a player as twitch combat focused (she'd hunt pythons and even 'condas with eagles in res zones) but the Phantom was her dream ship. It flew just close enough to a fighter but gave her access to all those big nasty modules. I guess it's a niche sort of appeal?
      Personally, I've got a three Mk II's (a bounty hunter, an anti-xeno and a core miner) and a pair of phantoms (an explorer and a "long-ranged miner"). The latter is basically a hybrid explorer/mining build that's set up to just pick a pretty looking star system within a few thousand LY and go mining there for a change of scenery. I built her to do one particular task so she's a very odd duck. She's stripped down explorer-style but lacks the usual self-sustaining modules for long stretches in the black, instead she'd got enough cargo space and limpets for a profitable bit of space tourism (and still jumps over 50LY with a full load of limpets or ore). I got tired of seeing all those pristine looking hotspots in empty systems and wanted the ability to mine them. It's not a min-max mining build (my core miner Mk II and my big laser mining 'Conda and T10 turn better profit) but more of a "I want to mine in the pretty nebula tonight" build.

      @Shmidershmax 4 года назад

      @UsmValor For the price, the aspX will take you a long way with mining. By the time you can afford a krait you're better off getting a mk2 or a python for mining.

    I'm loving the phantom for combat at the moment, PvE for now though. Two rail guns and either multi cannons or plasma accelerators, with that maneuverability and speed who needs the larger shield size and extra hardpoint? I'm already having a struggle to manage the heat :D
    I don't understand the 60 armour hardness that is mentioned, my phantom only has 55, should I ask for my credits back?

    But what about the coffee maker?!!!
    Seriously though, I have them both... and a python.
    I use the python for medium hauling and some mining...
    I prefer the mk2 for most everything. I suppose I just got used to it and spoiled by the view. It’s unmatched for spotting core asteroids in a ring.
    I built my phantom for exploration. Honestly, it was mostly just the interior. It felt also like a ship that I could rig up for long running without too many compromises.

    There's one fundamental issue with the ships concept in Elite. These minor differences are inconsequential, mostly. Why would i pilot a type9, a dedicated cargo ship, once i have an anaconda? No reason. Look at the X series, for example. The cargo ships have x10-100 times the cargo space! But they are almost unarmed, with heavy shields.
    Same goes for all the fed ships, around the assault ship, the dropship. They are all the same, meh.

    Why would you use an AspX instead of a Phantom? Seems to do everything the AspX does but better. For me it's the best exploration ship out there, although I prefer the Anaconda's immense jump range when traveling to Colonia or further. Krait MK2 is my main combat ship both for PvE and PvP.

  • @zoltorortegus6259

    You can't seriously be claiming the asp explorer is better or close enough that It's not worth getting the phantom. Besides the point the asp explorer doesn't have enough high class optionals to fill the need of a deep space explorer, the asp explorer has a serious over heating issue. It's so bad, you can just barely get close enough to a star to scoop, without over heating instantly. The asp explorer is also a literal flying brick, It's not fun to fly at all, where as the phantom flies, and handles like a dream.

    Never tried a MK2 but the Phantom is my favorite ship alongside the cobra 3.
    The Phantom can be setup to run very cool and fairly fast, so it is good at shady transport deals and can land almost everywhere because it has good engines.
    For combat i bought a Mamba instead of a MK2, i refused to buy a FDL because almost every combat pilot flies it.

    from 7:50 onwards, makes it sound like you're doubting the Phantom in respect of 'competing' with the AspX and DBX. Surely you recognise its an awesome explorer and better than those other ships 'in this field'? Yes it costs more. Phantom is hands down an AspX replacement IMHO... this is a big deal! Your review of this ship feels a little doubtful and didn't really seem to understand or interrogate it's true capability. Just saying! :) Love your work anyway!

    I feel if we both compared for combat, a Shield less Phantom can be very tanky compared to the MK2 while the MK2have a extra hard-point + extra damage from the slf.
    Kinda weird how you might build them very different despite having similar base stats. I would be curious how well a silent running build would perform on the Phantom vs the DB scout honestly.

    The real comparison is: How little does the Mk II differ from the Phantom once you alter the internals for the intended role? Answer: like 10%. So, get the Mk II, and optimize the modules, and you are in the 90th percentile of virtually every other medium ship, including the Phantom for a given role. Will take that outcome for many roles, vs slightly better for a single role (exploration).
