Early on I wasn't having any fun with E:D. Then when I was nearly broke, I traded in everything on a DBX - best I could afford was a class D FSD - so I stepped into the black with only 24 light years of range and without the cash to re-buy if it all went wrong... It took me over a year to make it to Colonia, via Sag A.
When I turned in the data I went from dead broke to filthy rich. With my newfound wealth I could do anything I wanted in just about any ship I wanted....

I love the "rickety ship that's punching way above its weight"-feel that the Dimondback Explorer has. It's got weird quirks: some systems don't entirely match with what you'd expect, the hardpoints are all over the place, the margins for error are small, and it's got the interior space and comfort of a student flat. But I'd argue it's got this sense of personality, this charm, this spirit of independence exactly because of its quirks.

The DBX will always have a special part in my heart, this little ship took me around the galaxy and back.
It's got it's quirks, the powerplant barely gives enough charge to do all you need to, you'll be fighting the mass limits to get that full suite of exploration equipment you need in it (expecially when you engineer it), that fuel scoop will have you sitting on stars longer than you ideally want to.
And yet, this is my all time favourite exploration vessel, it does all it needs to do, and it does it well. Its quirks may make it feel like you're in a rustbucket that's always one missed maintance check away from disaster, but so was Serenity and to me it's got that same character to it, that same sense of pesonality that makes her not just a ship, but a home.

This video was one of the main inspirations for me to start Elite. I became fully hooked. Hotas, VR, you name it. The DBX was the second ship I bought, and I couldn't wait to get it. I immediately went on an exploration with a 5C FSD because I had almost no money left after completing the purchase. The next ship I bought was an Anaconda a few hundred hours later, that's how far this ship will get you. And now, I am on my way back to the Bubble from my trip to Beagle Point / Ishum's Reach. Thank you for hooking me into exploration in Elite!

  • @subtlewhatssubtle

I bought the DBX because I saw it and thought "Oh, this thing thinks it's an attack helicopter, that's cute."
Then I inadvertently exited the bubble one evening, and I realized that it doesn't think it's an attack helicopter, it *knows* it's a tiny boat, leaning face-first into the unknown, and in its heart beats the same human spirit that steered the Beagle, the Victoria, the Golden Hind.
The DBX is discovery and wonder and a willingness to sacrifice everything to learn more.
"i don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me."

I really enjoyed this video, your descriptions of why exploration is so compelling got me a little choked up. I think you're right, that it's a symbol of the desire to explore, and that makes this weird little ship beautiful. I went to Colonia in a DBX, and the sense of vulnerability from being in a small ship lent an edge of fear to the whole trip.
I also ended up imagining that it was rather cramped in there. What with the internal slots packed full of survival gear, I'd be rolling out my sleeping bag on the floor of the cockpit. Not much room for amenities, either, maybe just a mini-fridge and a microwave. I figure I'd eaten a lot of bagel-dogs and hot pockets on that journey.
Also, if you take an SRV, you can always prospect for additional materials for synthesis on planets. Not being able to repair your power plant is probably the one thing that might force you back to the closest station. As other people mentioned, having another power plant would be useful, but maybe you could also have some kind of battery with limited charge, just enough to run the AMFU for a bit before you have to recharge it.

Been flying a DBX since I could afford one. Two and half years later, I've been to the Crab Nebula, The Zurrara, Colonia, Beagle Point, the farthest system from Colonia, Distant Worlds 2, and I'm still not back from DW2! I've even landed on the highest gravity landable planets and survived an accidental drop! I undersized the fuel tank to a C4 to get 2-3 extra light years of single jump range, and never had a problem. Over 66ly of jump carrying a dual SRV bay, prismatic shields, and a rail gun (used for fuel dumping).
    Best explorer out there...

Useful for dumping fuel, as mentioned, and also improves sustainability in combat zones, as instead of having to return to a station to get more ammo, you can just supercruise down to the star, scoop some fuel, and fly back to the CZ.

Fortunately not outfitted for astronomic price I decided try it on field. So... first landing on nearby planet with average rough terrain... impossible to find suitable area. Go back, sold this overgrown snake, dust off old good friend DBX, restock and again into black. Very good exploration ship - small enough to fit in canyons and land successfully. Double 2A FMUs give decent repair capability, scooping fuel and FSS scan simultaneously - zero deadtime. Because I hate grind stay with not engineered modules. This ship carrying anything I need.

I know this video is a few years old, and many people might not see this, but if you do here's a piece of advice. To get the materials you need, you can pick up the lightest refinery to not cut into your jump range and pack a single class 1 mining laser. All the materials needed for AFMU refills can be mined from asteroids and having two AFMUs means one can fix the other should one get too damaged. Not interested in keeping any cargo? Just jettison the stuff you don't want to keep. You could also stock up on the mats before going out into the black. I'm not much of an explorer though I have gone to Colonia in the Dawn Treader (my DBX) and DEFINITELY needed to stop off a time or two to make repairs, restock mats etc.

Any exploration ship is going to be limited by the integrity of its power plant, since that's the only thing that can't be AFMU'ed. DBX can still double-AFMU and still get an SRV in there, so it can still hang until the power goes out. The DBX is the living example of "Why fly a bigger ship when you can't enjoy flying a bigger ship". The more I fly smaller ships, the more I wish we could move around our ships and enjoy the extra space, to chill around an uncharted earthlike without being grafted to the chair like it was coach in a United Airlines flight.

I turned into home; into something that safely got me out of Thargoid encounters, something that has gone 30,000LY outside the bubble to see jaw dropping views, something I can push to it's limits, something that pushes me to mine. Something I can rely on... It's more than my favourite ship, it's a relationship.

That intro music was a beautiful pick for a ship that is designed to go where no one had ever gone before. To show you sights no human eyes have ever seen. To take you into the abyss of darkest corners of the galaxy, and return you safely home.
However, DBX isn't really a measuring stick for exploration ships. That was a bit of an exaggeration perhaps. For it's price it's amazing, but it wouldn't be my first choice if budget is no object.
If new player asks me what ship they should leave the bubble in for the first time - I will say with confidence it's Cobra MkIII.

As someone who's been flying a DBX practically since I first acquired it just after my first week of playing, I can firmly say you've absolutely nailed the feeling you get flying this beauty. It makes you just want to go further into the black than anyone else has, even though that bar moves further with every successful attempt. You don't end up minding the distance. Because you're not alone out there. You've got not just your ship, but a friend. One who shares your passion to see everything the galaxy has to offer.
Hell, I've flown thousands of lightyears outside the bubble only to become stuck when my FSD finally gave out and I had to call the fuel rats to deliver materials to repair. It was hours just sitting there, but I didn't mind the wait. In fact, it was one of my best experiences in this game to date. Just sitting back after putting out the request and thinking back on just how far I'd come, the things I've seen, the untouched worlds I've visited.
And I can firmly say, that thirst to explore still isn't quenched. I don't think it ever will be. So out into the black we go. Just me, the stars, and my friend, the Forward Unto Dusk. And I don't know if I'll ever, ever, come home.
