Wait what, I dont have to touch up my paint if I dont want to?
Time to get some scratches on my explorer anaconda! Not before I turn it into a cargo ship/miner, I need more credits first.
I sometimes miss my ASP X, specially with nothing but miniguns on it. The conda has all the utility and modules I could ever hope for, and extra fuel tanks to go FAAAAR before using a class 7 scoop to refill in a second.
And to think I first left the bubble on a cute little hauler lol.

The AspX does do three things which make me prefer it over the Phantom for exploration.
    - Its supercruise maneuverability is _amazing._
    - It lands pretty much _anywhere_ due to its compact shape.
    - The cockpit provides _the best view you can ever get_ without immersion-breaking freecam.

This ship, in VR, skimming over a planet's surface, in the shadows, with lights on, with flight assist off, and with the ship pointing towards the planet but the velocity vector all over the place, moving your head towards where it's moving, rather where it's pointing, is awesome!

The reason many people (me included) adore the view from _inside_ the Asp Explorer so much is because of _immersion._
It's just more immersive and it feels more... "real" to see stuff from where your ingame head is.

Im at the point in my piloting career that I have a ship purpose built to out class it in any one category.
Yet I can never find it in my heart to actively dislike my ASP X. It seems that we are fated to a love that could never be.

I did most of my money in commerce, but I enjoy exploring and combat the most. I started on a hauler (60ly jump range, no engineering!!!), then moved to a DBX that I still keep as a taxi for moving inside the bubble, then a DBX that I sold to buy myself the Anaconda. Fully outfited, with a class 7 fuel scoop, extra fuel tank, some cargo space, field repair units, scanners, a fast recharge shield, 2 SRVs and 2 ship launched fighters it still get 41ly of jump range, with only a mildly engineered FSD
I want to go back to commerce with it, so I can outfit it for NPC combat with a TON of armour and all the autocannons it can fit. Then go back to exploring and finally go to Sagitarius A* and stick around in Colonia for a while
Im scared of neutron stars (barely survived one with an adder, 1% hull left when docking) but im going to have to learn to use the highway if I want to get to Sag in a couple of weeks at most, playing only one or two hours a day (as I still want to play other games)

My Asp Explorer, Vanishing Point AE-21. I love this ship. It's the first ship I took outside the bubble. At the time, I had no engineering, kept my hardpoints (didn't know at the time that I wouldn't run into *anything* out there), fitted a worldview-changing 6B fuel scoop and an extra fuel tank, and set off toward the outer rim. After so long in the black, coming back home to Filipchenko City and hearing the flight controller key up with that familiar chime, and "Lakon, Victor-Alpha-November: Station services are prepped for your arrival. Welcome back, CMDR." - it was wonderful. That trip is one of my favorite gaming memories.
Nowadays, she's fitted with a core mining kit. I bought a Krait Mk2 to take on that job because I prefer my Asp X being a nimble jumper, but I still miss my Asp when I'm out mining. It was just more fun to whip around the icebergs in my "prop plane" than it is to lumber through them in the big Krait, which almost seems to resent me for taking it to a ring location that isn't RES. My Asp was just happy to be out of the dock.
Can't recommend the Asp Explorer enough. If you're in a Cobra looking for your next home, pick up the Asp X.

She's a great ship. I used mine for many months until DW2. Then I realised that there were too many compromises, too many sacrifices. Sadly she stayed behind and was replaced by the ship that cannot be named. I have many fond memories. We crossed the Formadine Rift and we went to Sag. A* together. I ranked up with the Federation and Empire on data missions thanks to her speed and excellent jump range. Together we made Admiral and King. 'Resurgence' is my trusted friend and our bond can never be broken. I learned all about engineering with her and the Guardian sites were easily reachable. She will forever stay with me and will be a premium vessel in my fleet. If you haven't tried the Asp Explorer, I implore you to. Elegant, Trustworthy and just the 'extra bit' to get you out of trouble and home safely.

The ASP, based on my few months of binge-playing seems to be so loved because people got stuck with it. It was once the only real choice for a true explorer, it was on the edge of a massive paywall leap for anyone who hated grinding for hours, and was generally just a decent ship for its price and size. Now its outclassed but for so long it was the main ship of Elite Dangerous that it really is the face of the game.

Love my AspX, lightly engineered, 60ly jumps, boost to 510+, it's my daily driver so to speak. Got a Python for mining, Type-9 for space trucking (though it will be replaced by a Cutter when I get my Empire rank up), FDL for murdering. I really like flying all the different boats, but there is just something about my AspX, it feels right to me, it's MY boat, MY happy space. It will be the one I take to Colonia, and eventually Beagle Point. I named it 'Longshot' jokingly because at the time I wasn't really thinking I was gonna stick with Elite, the learning curve was too steep. But now in my 2nd go round of the game, turns out the name works :D

This, this was the ship I spent most of my time in when I was still playing. I had tried all the different paths to make money, a living if you will. I was passable at the tradesmen game, but sucked terribly at space combat. It wasn’t until I tried this and geared it out for exploration that I truly started to make some profit and somewhat enjoy myself. If not for the ridiculously long time the travel itself caused, I would have tried it much sooner. Sadly, I seem to have a talent for finding aggressive ships that won’t let me leave. Losing my ship one time too many when I’m so far outside the Bubble just ate to much of my wallet and time. Eventually I left the game, but I’ll never forget my Explorer.

It isn't space madness, the prop noise was there. Im not sure where it went, I haven't been in mine since my first journey to colonia. 38ly range, D rated everything, and opted to drop the shield for an extra afmu at the time. That was a year and a half ago. Ive severely overlooked my asp, the Eistibus, since then. And that's just sad, I grew attached to her after that length of time, so much so I still have the girl, but she's been in storage the entire time. And when the phantom came out, that became my main exploration ship. I may need to dust off the old girl, and give her another chance to stretch her legs.

The Pilot, you need to evaluate ASP Explorers canopy in room-scale VR, where external camera is a big immersion-breaker. It is basically a huge open balcony in Space. @@adamross2256 I have mixed feelings about Vive too. But there is no headset on the market without big flaws. For Vive the downsides are bad lenses with small "sweet spot" and relatively high price especially when you count in Deluxe Audio Strap without which it is pretty much unusable. For Odyssey+ and other WMR headsets it is comfort and bad controllers. For Rift CV1 it is difficult setup without room-scale out of the box and the need to have USB cables all over your room. Rift S is just a joke on customers. Index seems best overall, but expensive. Reverb may be OK. Don't know much about it.

This was my 3rd ship, Sidewinder > Type 6 > ASPX, and I agree about the propeller sound, it was really jarring the first I heard.
But she's my workhorse! Cargo runs! Passenger runs! Long jump range! and I just started to mine with it, to try and make some money. =)
She's a good girl. Gonna use her to figure out how to get the money and resources to really upgrade my Vulture for bounty hunting.

I started playing ED on VR recently. AspX is my first ship I used for some "serious" exploration (so about 500ly from the bubble and mapping everything on the way). I really like the great views from cockpit.

I WAS WAITING FOR THIS SHIP! Ahhhh such memories, it got me to elite exploration, and colonia, and the voyager 1 (before the FSS when you had to just point your nose where ghost giraffe said and hope) it got me into the cutter, and was with me on the Gnosis, and the Osiris started the naming trend I still use on all my ships today. To this day it still has more distinct trips than any other ship in my fleet, all on legacy engineered parts no less. One of my favorite ships.

Nice video as always Pilot! The Asp was my Frontier ship 25 years ago for as long as I played that game and I loved it - although somewhat oddly I spent very little time in one in ED, with [other ship] Mk II taking over as my main and later [other ship variant] taking care of my exploration necessities... but I still miss my old days in the Asp. I must reacquaint myself with my old flame.

I loved the sound. I took my AspX to beagle and oevasy sg-0, and loved every jump ands system scanning on the way there. The way back however.... I’m definitely going back into the black and I’m looking forward to spending time with her again.

The Asp was my goal as a starting pilot. I wanted to be that off-brand Captain Kirk tromping around the galactic plane seeking new life forms and whatnot.
Soon as I had her I cheaply engineered the FSD and slapped on some second rate gear. Her jump range was like 30ly still, and the fuel scoop literally took 5 minutes to fill the tank. I was also a terrible pilot, nearly succumbing to a high gravity moon halfway along the journey to Colonia. And, yet over the course of the month it took me to crawl my way across, it was a starry eyed experience. Call me masochistic, but every session felt like a decent enough episode of Star Trek: Enterprise; an outgunned vessel bearing intrepid souls in a long, grueling odyssey across unknown skies, a headfirst dive into the black ocean right as you’ve barely learned to swim.

I kinda like the looks of the ASP Explorer because of these two small flippers on the top, the sporty stripes and I find it's engine sounds pretty funny (but not as funny as my Adder's engines when I throttle up/down).

The Portsville Dawn. When the music swells, I hear her soul. I see the darkness. I see the light. I am one with her, she with me, as we glide through the cosmos. I want to be out there, out in the black, seeing the universe from my bubble. I will never forget reaching out, pretending with all my might, that I was really out there in my ship, set loose from Earth.
This ship defines what Elite Dangerous to me, and you brought it to life. Keep flying, please. o7

Glad you mentioned its capability as a miner. I was a combat pilot at first, but after core mining was introduced, I hopped into an Asp to grind out half a billion credits for my Anaconda.
As a core miner, the Asp defies everything I thought a mining vessel would be. Instead of a bulky tanker I'm instead flying this little nimble pod around, using specialized equipment to detect and collect only the most valuable minerals

She was my first exploration ship and now my primary core mining ship. I love it's agility once I've cracked a rock open and need to blast off the goodies. It's part of the task force I keep on my carrier at all times in case I need that capability where I am. It can be fitted back to exploration with a few changes if I need that option too. My primary long range exploration ships are both the Anaconda and the Phantom but I keep finding useful roles with the Asp. Great ship.

I think its worth saying that as a new player, the asp explorers first impression was how amazing the view is. I play in VR, so drone cameras aren't terribly intuitive. Coming from the adder the view is amazing

old and late but i played elite back in the days where running out of fuel meant explosion. i went from sidewinder to adder and stopped playing for years until a few weeks ago. i jumped back in and bought the mk 4 cobra and bounced around the bubble in it for a while until i took her all the way to maia in the pelaides sector. the fortune in exploration data gave just enough to get my hands on the asp x. That one trip in and out the bubble gave me the explorers itch and now when i call my asp x to the bubble and outfit her properly i'll never look back i fear, a fantastic little ship i hold onto for ever

Lakon back at it again with another master piece of a ship. I spent so many hours in this ship purely because of the jump range. This ship was my go to for long range CG's and I still have this ship kicking around somewhere in the bubble. The ASP X was the ship I flew when I grew tired of my Type 7 (The literal space brick) and it always made me love the game again. I'm a trader at heart and while we don't get any love anymore, that's all there was for me 4 years ago and this ship was a huge part of my fleet.

Dude, I am just getting into exploring in Elite, and I built out an Asp Explorer, and I am actually heading to the Omega Nebula as well. Because 1) I needed a place about 5k lightyears from my home system to unlock an engineer and 2) because it had a cool name. I literally just looked for something that I thought would have some neat landmarks tos ee, and a big nebula seemed like it would probably fill that niche.

Love it! I used a Krait Phantom on DW2, but when I close my eyes and imagine myself standing on a distant shore, I'm standing in front of my Asp Explorer. Best core miner by a country mile. 500+ m/s makes scanning for candidate rocks a breeze. 96t cargo (plus 6 in refinery) is the perfect amount for single gaming session. Thrust around the cracked open astroid without constantly dragging arse end on some rock. Manoeuvrable enough to never have to worry about loosing the interdiction mini-game. Big jump range lets you easily traverse bubble to get mined goods to market.

This ships took me to Colonia and I was not even back to the bubble when I joined the DW2 and went all the way to Beagle Point and back to Colonia.
This ship earned me my exploration elite, my first billion credits and all the things I needed for me other ships in the fleet.
While I understand your frustration with the sound, I said I came to love that purring sound, and every now and then I go back to it to go somewhere quick.
She is a good ship, we all know it, and while of us will get something else, no one will forget it

It is indeed a great, versatile ship. Sadly I didn't own one for awhile. I cut mining teeth in a Keelback and got a Diamondback Explorer for long journeys. The Asp Explorer is a nice compromise between those two vessels and all three are a pleasure to fly.

  • @douglasfox2733

The Asp Explorer is perhaps the best space taxi in the game, yielding over 60 ly actual and an oversized scoop at a very low cost. It is also one of the best core miners, as its agility can highly accelerate your mining rate.
