The Asp Scout is one of the 3 ships in the game with a unique skill. This is often overlooked because it's not listed on the stats overview page, similar to how the heat capacity of ships isn't listed. But if you've ever spent time flying an Asp Scout, it will show itself to you - the skill, 'Confusion' causes hesitance and delayed action in all players that target the ship. This gives you a survivability edge that is incomparable and well worth the pricetag.

Hey, I actually like the asp scout...
The giant wedge shape and slow speed makes it easier to hit with fixed weapons, so all and all it's a great ship to fight against while I'm flying literally anything else. :P

  • @chuffy3504

I had fun using it as a ground attack ship when skimmer missions were so profitable with med dumb missiles with extra capacity and two fixed small beams. Speed didn't matter there but agility did to keep everything on target. I'd also fly as close to the ground as I could from place to place which was fun in that big glass canopy. That's the only good use I've found and sold it since.

It's ship I fly most in ED. Yes, unironically.
Because it's my dedicated material gatherer and I always need more materials.
Why the Asp Scout you might ask and not the Explorer? I like how it handles in supercruise just like the DBS but has bigger internals. And there's lot's of supercruising, when you look for those emissions. Another good choice for this job would be the Cobra, but the internals size spread of the Scout kinda makes it perfect to get all the stuff I need. I don't need it to be fast, I don't want to fight anyway, just collect and scan stuff and land on planets.
It's like that ugly little Kangoo/Berlingo delivery sedan car your boss forces you to drive. At first you wish you could drive like any other car, but after a while it's your second home.
I even kinda like the looks now. It's not pretty on a station or against the sparkly star backdrop. It's most beautiful landed on a rock, waiting for your SRV to return. A little bit like a comfy tent.

I actually really love this ship, it makes a great ground scouting ship and it's super cruise turn speed is incredible.

One thing the Asp Scout DOES have going for it is a very powerful array of maneuvering thrusters, to the point that it's one of the best and most responsive ships in the game where vertical and horizontal thrust are concerned. While this isn't enough on its own to make the scout viable for heavy combat, it does give the ship a niche use as a planetary explorer and SRV lander; those powerful thrusters make flying over/landing on high-G worlds much easier than it would be in most other ships, and IMO this makes it a viable alternative to other ships for outfitting as an explorer or surface mission runner.

  • @SenseiJacksama

Ok so hear me out. I use the asp scout for stealth piracy to hack the cargo holds of mega ships and faction installations. In my opinion i think its the best ship for the job; but the problem is that stealth piracy isnt something that is done by most players and admittedly it isn't very profitable and the only reason im doing it is because of an achievement on the xbox. The asp's are the 2nd coldest running ships in the game next to the DB's so you will want to start off the bat looking at one of these 4. in stealth piracy you need more cargo space than the DB's can offer yet the cargo space in the asp X is far more than you would ever need to do this job. The asp scout is more maneuverable than the X so its quicker and easier to get around to the different areas of an outpost and it has enough room to equip 2 or 3 collector limpets a hatch breaker and the cargo space is big enough that after hacking 2 cargo bays your own cargo will be about 80% filled up before the cops arrive and you still have enough time to leave. Board hopping isnt a good thing to do either as when you reload the game your going to just get scanned and have to leave anyway which renders the asp X's extra cargo space useless. hard points are obviously irreverent and with utility mounts the only thing you litteraly need is a heatsink and a chaff in case the station gets attacked while your there. thats it. your in silent running most of the time so shield boosters are useless too. Also the biggest point for this the scout is less than half the rebuy cost of the X. Anyway thats my two cents. Noone really does this anyway but if your curious/bored i do know some of the stations do drop materials so its not a complete waste of time but its not that productive either.

I am one of a very small number who actually like the AspS. With DD3 thrusters it’s still fast enough vs. the larger NPCs that would give it trouble. I see it as a multirole that is actually the same or better in nearly every regard vs. Cobra III except for speed. Holds more, jumps further, scoops faster, turns better, has a better hardpoint layout and power distributor, and view from the cockpit and more armor. It probably deserves at least a third utility slot which could translate to a small shield improvement and make it a bit more versatile. Unfortunately FDev has made earning CR a bit too easy now so most CMDRs don’t need to spend much time in this price class of ships.

  • @cmdrjontomasson5510
    @cmdrjontomasson5510 5 лет назад +1

I use mine for search & rescue & megaship heists. It does those roles well: its agility helps, as does its relative coolness compare to a Cobra. It has the slots for recon, hatchbreaker, & collector limpets, & enough cargo space. Space for an AMFU too, which helps with silent running heat damage. It is fun for snatching escape pods from under Thargoids' sensory pits.

I love the way, with your ship choices, you zag when we think you're going to zig! Makes for very interesting viewing. Another great vid. I was hoping at the end you were going to come up with a great use for the Asp Scout that, but looks like we were right, it's a bit redundant! :-) The theory for why it popped up originally was that with the arrival of Horizons (same time as this ship was released), it gave pilots a chance to use the Asp's great cockpit and visibility for scanning planetary surfaces, but at a lower price point than the Asp Explorer. David Braben even said at the time that while developing planetary surface gameplay the Asp was his new favourite ship. Of course now Horizons is well established, and credits are much easier to amass than back in the early days of the game, it's become a bit superfluous. I hope FDev will revisit some of these ships, like the Keelback too (which really needs one extra small slot to fit all the new mining gear and a fuel scoop, and the T7, which could use a class 2 hardpoint for mining). It would be nice for every ship to have a proper raison d'etre (even if it's just as a viable alternative to another ship). Looking forward to next week's episode!

I recall Frontier mentioned (over two years ago) that the Asp Scout was to receive a significant buff.
It never occurred. The buff (I assume) was to accompany a more specific role for the vessel.
As a slew of 'new' ships have arrived since I guess we can forget about that now.

I actually prefer the AspS's design over the AspX. It looks more like a proper classic Asp.
When I was looking for the next step up to replace my first exploration ship back in 2.4( a Dolphin), I figured the Asp was the natural progression.
But I didn't like the design of the AspX, nor how overused it was by explorers at the time. Its ubiquity was meme-status. Plus I didn't think the stats were that different…
These were the same reasons that led me to picking the Dolphin over the DBX for my first explorer. The difference is the Dolphin actually worked out nicely.
For a while after I discovered its stats were garbage, I didn't know what to do with it. It was a downgrade to the thing it was intended to replace.
Well I already had a general-purpose explorer, so… how about a lore hunter? Something to track down old logs and oddities? Sure. Why not?
So I named it the Wan Shi Tong. …It collected dust.
And then the Oracle attacks happened.
I brought that worthless hunk of junk out to Deciat… and saw my first Thargoid Interceptors. I was awed. And I knew what the ship was for.
Fast forward to now, and my Asp Scout is fitted with a corrosion resistant cargo rack, xeno scanner, shut down field neutralizer, and a synth lime paint job that makes it look like a knock-off Cyclops. It has gotten me so many beautiful screenshots and videos of Thargoids.
Its stats may be crap, but the Wan Shi Tong is now one of my favorite ships I own.

I feel like maybe certain ships should get inherent bonuses outside of equipment. Scouts get longer scanning range, better heat mitigation... Idk, things you imagine a scout would have. Long lonesome trips, staying hiding, and providing Intel

I think they added an extra 0 to the price on accident. It’s an okay alternative to the cobra, except it’s about 3million more to get into for more maneuverability at the cost of a huge amount of speed and size. I’ve never understood it, even though I’ve always wanted to love it.

Agreed. If they wont give it anything to be competitive, and huge price drop is in order.

It's a cheaper Asp Explorer, and it's not terribly pointless to engineer it since you can migrate those parts to it's bigger brother. This ship will serve one purpose ideally: to be the next best affordable exploration ship for up and coming players, before they make it to the Explorer. When the ship came out credits weren't as easy to acquire as they are now, so you could sit for quite a while in this ship before being able to afford the next best thing as well as its parts and buy-back cost.

They really need to change that name. It's never good when you do multi-crew in an Asp., or have to explain to others what multi-crew activities you were doing with a friend. "I was exploring and my buddy came into my Asp to see what it was like" "no no no, it's not what i m.. you know what? He sure did, and we had a great time" 😒💩

"My Asp sucks, wish mine was as good as others."
"I destroyed *so many* Asps last night!! "

For me asp scout is great material farmer for engeneers. It have more cargo than db scout, its agile. It can have 1 recon limpet + 2 3b collector limpets, with 52 limpets in cargo, without shield of course, but i hack without shields so.. its great for high grade emissions + hacking for data

Going by EDSY, it seems more like the Asp Scout is more of a progression from the Diamondback Scout; it is essentially a stripped down Asp like the DBS is a stripped down DBX. Asp/DBS have the same stats in terms of turn rate, with the DBS specializing pitch rate. You also trade 2 utility mounts from the DBS for more optional spaces on the Asp. Sadly, the DBS also has some serious top speed on it as well over the asp.
Really though you'd be better off flying a Vulture instead for either of those cases, unless you really need the 4 weapon slots instead of 2, or need the jump range. And it's only 1+ more million base.

  • @thefrenchbastard1646

well it's a really nice ship if you want a bit more space so you dont need to sleep in your ship's toilet
diamondbacks are great but not very confortable
a vétéran bounty hunter like myself or explorers with low self estime may not care mutch but a good night rest is really underated:P
