Its best asset is its flight model.
2nd highest yaw rate, coupled with very small turn-rate dropoff during boost recovery and at full / zero throttle means you barely have to even think about your throttle position. Just boost turn everywhere, boost laterally to throw yourself at odd angles to keep behind the enemy, and just keep your nose pointed at them and hold down the trigger. It doesn't require nearly the finesse of the FDL and you can throw it around like a bull in a china shop.
Then ram them. And ram some more.
It's been my favorite ship since 2015. Love my Bruce.

@@rob.carrillo So the classic is 4x Multicannons. Either Gimballed or fixed, but I don't like how often you need to reload using that, nor do I like that the top one is far enough away from the others that it's sometimes hard to land all 4 at once.
What I like that gives me a good balance is 3 fixed lasers on the bottom (2 mediums and 1 large) and one hard-hitting weapon of opportunity up on top. Using the lasers requires more distributor management, but you don't have to return to base as often for ammo. For the weapon on top, you can use a Gimballed Cannon with your favorite engineering or an Efficient Plasma Accelerator. The PA obviously hits harder, but it's also harder to hit with.
For the lasers on the bottom, you could use Long Range Pulse Lasers, or Efficient or Short Range Beams. I like beams because you can put Thermal Vent on either the two Mediums or the Large (or all 3 if you want overkill) to drop your thermal signature to zero in a very short time and turn the ship into a 800-tonne brick of ice. Efficient is easier, but up close and personal, Short Range hits harder.
For assassination missions, you can use either 4 PAs or 4 Frag Cannons. It'll delete just about anything, but you have to be careful for Wing Assassination missions, since your shields will be pretty weak and you'll have to dance around a good bit to avoid the primary target's wingmen.
Either way, it's an absolute blast to fly. I love it.

The Federal assault ship was my first combat ship.
When I bought this ship I was being hounded by anacondas on every mission, suddenly after a little bit of equipping and upgrading I was being chased by free money rather than Unstoppable monstrosities. This ship will always have a place in my fleet despite me flying the chieftain more often.

As an owner of a FAS, I understand that these days there are much better options out there. I got mine 5 or so years ago, back before the Alliance came out of the woodwork with their line-up. It was the ship I migrated to after the Vulture, and I did indeed sit there and grind rank for this brick. I was not left disappointed, thanks to its resilient yet turn-crazy capability of keeping time on target and surviving just about anything I put it up against.
Nowadays, I haven't been able to bring myself to sell this piece of nostalgia, so I engineered it. The thing turns on a hairpin, which makes me think I made it into a Merry-Go-Round of ludicrous proportions. And I still love it. I love the durable feeling of safety you get even as you wait for some idiot's chaff to wear off to resume your gimballed dakka. I love the maneuverability that its newer Alliance cousin presents as a selling feature. I even love it simply for the cruising speed engine sounds that it makes, and the thrum of the engines cruising you along to your next target. Probably one of the few times I ever don't mind screwing up an orbital glide, because I get to listen to it the rest of the way in to a surface base.
Is the FAS outclassed by other similarly-sized ships of its caliber nowadays? For sure. I even have an Alliance Challenger with a different build that probably can outperform it. Do I care? Not a single goddamn bit. ♥

The Chieftan is every QOL improvement I asked for with the FAS back in 2015.
And for that reason I REFUSE to use one. Because the fact that they created a more capable ship that requires no rank unlock feels like a direct insult to everyone that did the rank grind for the FAS, used the FAS for years asking for slight improvements (like they gave to everyone who bayed about the FDL's slide and gimped power plant) only to have FDEV go "LOL, here's something better for less."

Though many have stated this in one way or another throughout you're time spent making these glorious mini reels into the black, allow me to personally thank you by saying your combination of brilliant editing coupled with witty yet eloquent commentary and humour has stifled even Frontiers most brazen attempts to stagnate this game. Right now I'm 400 something hours in and have around 4.25 Bil credits which I manged to snag just before the opal mining Nerf, and A-rated: Anaconda, Fed Vette, Cobra Mk3, FGS, Asp Explorer, Eagle, and... Sidewinder... Because after you've had you're first few successful mining runs and then bought/outfitted one of the big three A rating a Sidewinder makes you feel like a Billionaire in a Casino. It is of no consequence; you do it because you can. I know many have accomplished more in less time, but I tried my best to balance the infamous grind with some enjoyment. Sigh... If only the F in Fdev stood for fun and not forsaken. So where does this rant of my current status and feelings of this game following my initial compliment end? By arriving at the point: your content keeps the spirit of what this game COULD BE alive. O7

I just recenly bought a FAS for getting into PvP combat. Its nowhere near ready to take other players, but what combat it has done against NPCs shows me this is a wondeful ship. A beam laser in the top slot and plasma accelerators all over the bottom... FLC Das TraumenJäger has proven to be one hell of a ship to fly and positively lethal at that. Just need to hit a bunch of enginers and and will be set

The FAS is definitely a mean one and in the right hands is absolutely deadly. When I had mine, I ran it with 2 large beams and 2 medium multi-cannons. Those lasers found enemy shielding to be a tasty snack. I wish I could say that my hands are among those that make this ship absolutely deadly, but alas, that would be a great thumping lie. I'm not too bad against non-pilots federation ships (read NPC's here) but against other players, I *SUCK!!!* I got routed by a guy (assuming it was a male) in a Cobra MkIII. He was an absolute ace and dispatched my shield rather quickly. I do have to give him points for not being a butthole about it. He let me run with my tail tucked between my legs and didn't pursue to ensure I saw the re-buy screen. But it was clear who was the better pilot and I'll be the first to admit it definitely wasn't me.

The fed medium line needs 2 more utility slots and more armor overall to justify the rank grind and that they are actually warships. I loved my assault ship but now it is totally obsolete vs a Krait Mk2 or an FDL, neither of which is an actual military ship (the FDL is a private bounty hunter)

There's a couple m/s speed difference between the two, and a marginal difference in maneuverability and lateral thrusters.
The biggest difference is that the internals on the FAS are way harder to snipe than on the Chieftan, and it's just generally a smaller target.

Some people are turned off by the ship seeming to only have 4 hardpoints. They forget that the FAS itself is a hardpoint. Having trouble landing those PA shots? That's okay. The boost is a backup trigger.

There's no accounting for taste, which is why some of us like sexy slick lines on ships that deserve to be museum center-pieces, and others prefer flying chinese takeout boxes that look like they were designed on the windows 98 version of MS Paint. The part you're missing about the Federal bricks is their unique and powerful flight model. If you don't understand how to fly them then they're not going to shine for you.
Specifically, they all share a unique quirk in that they maneuver extremely well outside of the "blue zone." This makes boost-circling your target and retaining energy through turns trivially easy tasks to accomplish. As an added bonus, their flight model means that constant FAOff isn't necessary in most combat situations, which in turn makes it a whole lot easier to effectively use fixed weapons on the Federal line.
TL;DR: Try to fly the FAS like it's an FDL and you're not going to perform very well. Adapt your flying to the ship instead of trying to make the ship adapt to your flying and you might just end up with a new favorite medium fighter.

Can you make a video about fleet carriers? I heard your take during the content reveal livestream, but not much past that you were disappointed (we all are). I want to hear your full current take on the fleet carriers, and maybe a fleet carrier review (when they are out of beta of course).
