DCS: F-16C Viper | Targeting Pod and Maverick Tips

- Since the last update, we have continued to refine the function of the Targeting Pod (TGP) designations and its behavior with the AGM-65 Maverick air-to-surface missile. This video is provided to help you better understand how to best use these two systems when paired together in Preplanned (PRE) mode.
Part of this update will also include a refactoring of the Viper Sensor Point of Interest (SPI) logic. This results in more accurate Cursor Zero (CZ) action, TGP and Maverick slaving, and functional Snowplow mode of the TGP.
This video also explains the proper use of TGP inertial (INR) mode when the TGP designation point becomes masked.

This is priceless. I’ve always been confused by the handoff. I didn’t know it had a break lock. I’ve just been out of range all this timr
Yes, this is a common mistake we see in a LOT of player tracks... trying to handoff or lock the Maverick seeker outside of max seeker lock range. If this happens the the Mav seeker goes into break lock mode (expanded crosshairs), just TMS Aft to re-set and try again when a bit closer. Thanks.
@@MattWagner ok since you replied so fast lol I have another question. I’ve been having issues with my bomb fall line not updating when using laser guided bombs. I get a point track but no hud info on where my target is so I can’t ccrp a target. Thanks again Matt. Always helpful
Sorry, but I cannot reproduce this. Please provide a track file on our forum and we'll take a look at where you may be going sideways. Thanks.
@@MattWagner thanks. You’re so helpful to the community.
Oh, hot stuff Wags. I noticed the weapon trail in the TGP screen too as it headed to target...these things may seem minor in the overall effort to bring us a very sophisticated weapon and sensory system months in development, but that attention to detail separates the sim' from pretenders, bravo.
DCS is incredibly detailed but the TGP uses a virtual camera broadcasted to virtually display on the TGP screen, so because the weapon trail is being rendered in the game the TGP will naturally see it, and it wouldn't have to be modeled separately.
Great demonstration 👍
PS: Those launch sounds are on point.
Awesome I was hoping we would get some TGP videos, thanks Wags and ED Team!
Wonderful cool, I was waiting so desperately , Thx Matt
Very informative video, as always Wags! Thank you!
Hotel Mav actually has longer stand off range when using Area Mode. Great video as always and keep them coming pls
Thanks for SnowPlow ! This brought the F16 back for me!
Seems the Viper is coming along nicely! So happy to hear that there will be something new to the SPI! Thank you!
Looks like another awesome update, as always! And a great walk through!
WIlbuz
Thanks for the update Matt! Was looking forward to this for months. 👍
Snowplow mode that actually works !!! I can fight with this the same way I fight with the A-10. Thank you.
Incredible stuff. Many thanks. So detailed.
Wooo Viper updates!!
Thanks for this, I’ve been waiting for some Viper AtoG improvements.
Thanks this really helps I was having lots of issues but now I see what I should have been doing
INR mode is so useful, I wish A10CII would include this mode as well.
TMS Aft short
@@mach_point8054 Holy crap, I have no idea for this long, gonna give it a try ASAP! Thank you!!
As described at 3:40 does not work. The pod must have gone through some changes as it doesn't do this.
Transitioning from Area track to Point using TMS Forward (Up) just goes strait to point track.
I’m having the same issue
@@xxxtibby9730 I think it just automatically is using position area track instead of INS. I've seen the INS symbology appear for split seconds, but the pod always seems to be operating in positional GPS data and perfectly tracks. I've had absolutely no issues with the pod reacquiring after masking it. It might just be out of date in this particular feature. So just hit TMS up to go to area track and you're good.
Awesome addition, thanks ED!
Almost committed war crimes at the end with those bombs
Napalm sticks to kids!
I don't think he pickled.
The F-16 is a flying war crime
I'll be honest I didn't understand the explainations about RNR at all. I got the point, but not how to do it.
Maybe put the command on the screen or something for those who are looking for the commands in game and for those who english isn't their first langage ?
(that is if you have time of course)
Thanks for the TGP slaving tho. Really helps
INR. Anyhow, best to wait for the updated Viper manual please. Sorry that the video was not more helpful for you.
@@MattWagner
Oh ok.
It's ok don't worry, I'm a slow learner ;p
But you still helped for the slaving ! I tried it the last few days and it was pretty confusing
I'm unclear at 1:27. He says to switch to INR by going " _TMS S short_ " ? What's that.
When's the CCRP bomb fall line gonna be fixed? It's not following the TPOD, I have to move the box using HUD as SOI first and then switch to TPOD every time x.x
Sorry, but working perfectly fine. If you have an issue, please post a track to our forums and we can help you out. Thanks.
@@MattWagner Doh! So it's PEBKAC? I'll do that!
@@MattWagner In your example when you went into SP the target line was still pointed behind you at the last location - is that correct then ? It gets fixed after you slew and select next target ahead ?
Hey Wags, I have one question regarding the EO Mavericks:
Why can I lock an EO Maverick from 9 miles out in the A10C II, while I need to be within 4,5 miles in the Viper. They are the same weapons, aren't they? So where is the difference?
Maybe because on A-10C we have "Force correlate mode"?
5:00 how do you slave the Mavs to your TGP ? somehow this doesn't happen automatically for me
Great Video, Matt! Thanks!
Great stuff, as always!
is snow plow working correctly? I can not find any way to reset the cursor on the hud. It seems to be stuck to the location from when I first used it.
Thanks
Awesome video, Wags. Did you film this on the Syria terrain?
Yes
INR will be activated by pressing TMS aft short. Right? But this command would be for the boreside mode. I couldn´t bring the TGP in boreside mode, lining up with the FPM on the HUD. What´s wrong?
Two different modes, AA and AG. There is no TGP boresight mode. Thanks
My arch nemesis explained
When you add the bullseye position of the radar cursor so the a-a part will be completed?
Man I wish the FA18 had displays like that
What?
@@MrNoice96 The Hornet only has B/W (technically green) monochrome displays. The viper displays are full color and much better in most scenarios.
I wish the 16s displays were as good as the JF17s! But the 16s are much older units. :)
Is the competition of the lightning pod coming soon ?
Warthawg maverick Deltas can lock on from 9nms with their TGP combo. 4 miles in a viper is a death sentence on any SHORAD system besides unguided AAA. Why is the range so short?
I think it's strange too. Since its the same maverick model being used. And besides the range of the maverick is double that range of 4 miles. Makes no sense
The EO (TV) Maverick H/K are the shorter range missiles he said.
I use the G (IR) from the Harrier around 8 miles.
@@paristo Yes, its a shame there's a rather short hard limit on the laser range in game AFAIK.
How can we move the left mfd for searching and how can I lock it ?
Wags have you had the opportunity to look at the HP Reverb G2? DCS looks incredible on it.
I can't tell what you're saying at 3:11 press what twice?
What's the best way to find targets with the TGP. I have them in my visual sight but for the love of god I can't find them on my TGP. The damn F16 isnt like a Hornet that can just use jhmcs and the tgp will lock to the helmet set spi. There is nothing like that really in the F16 is there? I've tried and looked at videos but there is nothing like the F18
You may need to try both CCD and FLIR camera and use manual gain, level, brightness, and contrast controls for best picture.
@@MattWagner Seeing the targets isn’t the problem, it’s getting the tgp in the general area. I just can’t seem to get my tgp in the area where the ground targets are, it’s not really how clear the picture is
@@jdzzl That is more a function of the mission brief then of where the target is in relation to a Steerpoint, coordinate, etc.
So what I do is use the VIS mode (or DTOS, if available) to slew the TGP where I want it to look. Use TMS Up Long with your HMCS cursor where you want the camera to look. I had these exact issues going from the A10C2 to the Viper, learning how to get the camera where I want. Hope that helps.
how do you zoom in and out on the pod?
Bro could you fixed it I don't know it either .
@@yunusemredursun8823 It is MAN RNG knob. Please read the manual before asking in the comments
Great tutorial. How do i set up buttons to zoom the TGP though? I only get the Narrow and wide function to work.
There are also keybindings for manual zoom (for the TGP). So there is a granular zoom in addition to the wide and narrow levels.
Finally... Effin Finally!
As a member of the A2A Master Race, targeting pods have always seemed like mystery-of-the-universe stuff to me. This year I'm going to try and get my brain wrapped around all this A2G jazz. Must prepare for that Strike Eagle to come out eventually. I hope the F-15C can forgive me.
How come the dynamic range indicator show in range so far before it is actually in range to lock? Is that an error that is still WIP?
At 3:12 you said “cursor zero twice aft to get back to airfield” was not clear on what button that was. Explain
As said in the video, Target Management Switch, TMS, aft twice.
Hi there, that would be nice if you could quickly implement bullseye information relative to the RDR cursor, that must not be a big thing to implement and it would be pretty helpful. thanks!
well my TGP is still messed up, jumping around, tries to "lock targets" by its own, hard to control, cannot lock "my" targets, even if i point them, with the TGP, really a mysterie this little thing. What did i do wrong? oh by the way, if the TGP jumps around, by itself, there are trees nearby, maybe that has something to do with it. and i am trying to use the TGP without pre-planned waypoints, what normally should work. it is constantly moving around in INR-Mode
Is the boresight process required to have the maverick seeker slave to the tgp after it powers up?
I don't seem to have the "S" icon over the station number when the maverick is selected on either the tgp page or the wpn page when they are being displayed on the left or right mfd's.
Seems like all the other videos I've seen once the tgp is powered up the maverick seeker automatically slaves to the tgp when it, (the maverick) finishes powering up?
I cant even get it to slave when starting the F16 "in flight" on the mission editor where everything is already powered up?
What am I missing?
How are you getting the tgt pod to actually look where you want. mine is always someone in space and i have no idea how to re center it in front of the plane
Boresight your Mavs.
@@MattWagner im so new man im sorry how do you do that? Im also using gbu 38 and just using the tgt pod for that and still same issue
@@chrispoe5292 ruclips.net/video/2p_DObCNDI4/видео.html
Hi, want to ask, if you got only one aircraft to learn and master ! which one you suggest plz ? thx in advance
To undesignate and return to SP is there a HOTAS mapping, or do you have to hit the MFD button?
TMS Aft short with TGP as SOI. Thanks.
@@MattWagner But doesn’t that put the TGP in INR mode as you mentioned in the video?
@@jobob2644 I believe it works a bit like the A2A radar designations. From point designation TMS aft enters INR mode. Another TMS aft press will cursor zero.
@@MattWagner I thought TMS Aft short goes to CZ. What about returning to SP?
F18, doesn't have this inr problem. Why is f16 so much issues?
You must boresight if performing a cold start. Many users are trying to handoff outside of Maverick seeker lock range.
These missiles are loathsome to use I just can’t get my head around them
Why don't we have to uncage the maverick before slewing it?
That would not be accurate for the Maverick versions modeled. That is a rather dated function for older versions that had protective seeker covers that needed to be ejected. Rather, the uncage HOTAS functions allows the Maverick the aligned a bit more quickly. Thanks.
What are the Keys to Zoom in out the TGP ? thanks
MAN RNG knob in the settings.
Right now it is almost impossible to synch the TGP with the maverick :(
Then you should certainly enjoy these changes. Thanks.
You dont have to do this boresgihting alignment thing with f18. Why not fix the f16?
We may add Mav boresighting to the Hornet later.
@@MattWagner oh God please don't
Can't figure out how to zoom in on the pod for the life of me
Why TGP's BH or WH video is not good as maverick?
It is in fact better, sometimes you need to take manual control of contrast and brightness. Thanks.
so is the snow plow mode in already? I tried to use it before and it was very buggy, it wouldnt zero out the pod to the front like 70% of the time.
We hope you will enjoy the update then. Thanks.
Are there any updates coming for the non-beta version?
We are planning a open beta patch on the 16th, depending on how that goes we will plan a potential stable version update. Once we know a date we will let everyone know. thanks
These tricks don't work when you've got a HARM with you do they?
I complain that f18 and f16 can't carry more mavericks.. Let's say at least two per pylon
They already can on LAU-88.
You skipped over how SP works with Mavs - can the Mavs be slaves to the TGP - and if so what mode is that ?
A PRE TGP designation is a PRE TGP designation, it does not change if the TGP is originally designated using SP mode. Thanks
I have a question. In the Viper the pilot must remember to do all these things yet the Warthog which is less sophisticated and has the same TGP the Warthog system does this automatically in DCS. 🤔
It's a inaccurate to say that the A-10C is less sophisticated than the Viper in the AG role, quite the opposite in fact. Thanks.
I imagine most of these things are not the TGP deciding to do them, but being told to by the aircraft. The A10C we have is only about 10-15 years old IIRC, so I’m not surprised that it’s automated. There also always a balance between automation and controllability.
Had a similar question - if same TPG system why the differences ?
Around 10 years of advancement.
@@MattWagner :)
Cool
please wat means INR?
Inertial, based on INS/GPS. Thanks
I can confirm that this doesn't work properly yet
Works great here in the current version. Thanks
Tms what short to go into inr?
Aft
Thanks, good on ya

that is why i don't like the H and K versions of the maverick because of this
The f16 doesn’t seem right playing the role of an A-10 😕

@@telecomanda Oh my God! World indeed is very small.
@@Anuj-2 Do you think I'd ever miss a video about the F-16? 😂
@@telecomanda I know you like F-16.
@@Anuj-2 The next patch will be kinda awesome, they also said they fixed the Aim-9 HMCS slewing bug, where the Aim-9 seeker would not point at where the pilot is looking.
Wait wait how did he swing the pod back to center? Cursor cursor ?
F16 viper love 👍🏻
Is this something in the work and soon to be released ? - because i have followed your tutorials and it doesnt work the way you have it in the game. This is on open beta. Thank you and the team for the hard work.
In new patch there is bug, it doest not recenter when tms down
What do I do wrong here? No matter how slow or fast I turn the jet I constantly have a huge offset between the TGP and the seekerhead of the AGM-65D. How do you avoid that? Is it a bug?
Please see my video on boresight alignment. Thanks
