Once again, and excellent video, all meat and no fat! If you have an AWACS or other jets using their radar with their datalink on, you can use TMS Up Short to designate the target on the HSD without using the radar. Now you can locate the target using your HMD and attack it without using your radar.
The best video i have ever seen on AA in the Viper! And i've been flying DCS since the mid-late 90's in its various forms. This is my go to channel for learning the planes you cover. Thanks.
The rwr direction / hmcs indicator on the top left of the hmcs symbology is really really useful for finding targets. The diamond is the bandit, the gap in the ring is your head. Put the two together and look out past the symbology for the speck in the sky. Great tutorial Gaffer
Helped a lot, thanks. I was going from Dfgt to Msl override mode just to use the 120s while dogfighting, when I could've just used Msl step long-press for the quick switch between the two missiles. Always learning, which is the fun part. Love the Viper!
A nice way to switch between bore and slave for the Aim-9 is to press the cursor switch down. That will switch it. One downside with some throttles though is that might switch your radar mode to slewable because in pressing down you accidentally move it in either X or Y direction. I set a slight dead zone on that axis just to reduce the chance of that.
Your F-16 tutorials are my favorite, I learned a lot from them, thank you! A question if I may: is there a way to cycle between slave and bore without having to take your hand off the HOTAS? Or is it only the OSB button?
Thanks! I think “cursor switch enable” will do it if you press it and hold down. Unfortunately I’m away from my DCS rig for awhile (travel) so can’t confirm that.
@@FLYGaffer thanks, will try. I’d also love to see a video from you on the practical use of the ECM pod as well as countermeasures. In some memoirs I’ve read it was suggested that program 5 was set to chaff only, while the thumbswitch was used for flares. Makes sense, when you need flares, you can’t take your hands off the throttle. It might have been personal preference though. Would be nice to know more.
Great tutorial! Can't wait to try the MSL override mode setup you have. As of 2.8 the boresight circle in the HMS won't stay on for me anymore. The circle only shows while holding down TMS up. It won't stay on like it use to. And the radar is locked on the HSD where you last looked and pressed TMS up. Not sure if it's a bug or not.
You said "look for that brick to start flashing"? Not sure what you were looking at here, I look at the HUD for pitbull indication but if there is another notification in the FCR!?
Nice video, just started on dcs with the f16, it’s a great help. However, when in dogfight mode with the radar on. Boresigth, vertical, hud mode, how do you switch between the 9x and 120c ?
@@radoslawbiernacki Not that I'm aware of. Could maybe set up one of normal A/A mode, missile override mode, or dogfight mode that way and leave it, and bind switch to that mode, but would have to set avionics that way each flight.
You have the best training vids out of all the youtubers. I'm not kidding!
Appreciate that!
@@FLYGaffer Do you have a preferred multi-player server you play on? Would love to join it!!!

Great tip, thx!
@@FLYGaffer sorry, one more thing… I had said press but I meant hold down the button. If you release then it will switch back to slave.
So easy to understand -Great!!!
Great video, I didn’t really know how this all worked until seeing this. Thx.
IIRC we should be able to switch missile BORE/SLAVE by using cursor/enable depress but I don't know if ED has (or will) implement that.
this was a great video. thank you
Really well done tutorial, just like your other recent ones. Keep them coming!
Nice refresher...really well done video. Thanks.
Great tutorial video once again Gaff!
2:04 I wish the radar settings could be _saved_ in *Falcon BMS* .

For boresight with the HMCS the radar has to be your SOI correct? I've struggled with getting the boresight circle to appear

these are good refreshers thanks

You’ll notice a flashing brick on the bugged target on the FCR when your missile goes pitbull
Great video, QQ what is a long step? I can't find the control mapping for that.
I think I fudged the correct term in the video. A long press of the MSL Step button will get you there
@@FLYGaffer got it working, thank you!
Great Vid...great channel...subbed!
6:10 Whats the "missile step button" called in the Controls Menu? EDIT: Default key "S".
NWS/MSL STEP
that aim 9x sure is nasty damn that off bore shot that missile can do is some scary stuff can the f15 carry those?
Do you have to hold missile override to stay in it? Or is it supposed to stay there without you holding it?
Do you have any mission files you have made that you're willing to share?
For me again as well! I recomment your videos to friends, so they can learn as well. Awesome work.
Do you have an Twitch channel?

Hey Gaffer, great content. Off topic question for you. Your game looks beautiful, what specs/monitor are you running DCS on?
i7-8700k 32GB RAM 1080ti 3440x1440 resolution
@@FLYGaffer Maxed settings? Looks great, cheers!
Need to get me a new Monitor.
Any shortcut to switch the Aim-9 to boresight from HOTAS? The "enable switch" does that momentarily but looking for some switching type.
As mentioned in another comment, the cursor switch does it.
He also said you could TMS down back to no rad
Yeah I know. But you need to hold down the enable button. I was asking about permanent switch other than this from SMS page.
